COVID-19

This is very well done. If you were wondering why your ___ falls for this crap all the time! Why are people drawn to Covid-19 conspiracy theories?

US and South Korea had the first case on the same date. And then we went to hell while they showed us how to do it. And this Twitter thread can show you how they do it.

You know, sometimes I wonder, why don’t we just hurry up and get it over with…to get to that magical phase of life, otherwise known as “herd immuity”. Instead of living like this slowly destroying everything it appears. Maybe after reading this you will change your mind: Without a Vaccine, Herd Immunity Won’t Save Us. If only it was that simple and…less deadly!

I am no big city fan. I like to visit but I can’t wait to come back to Ann Arbor, Michigan to my nice house, drink coffee on my deck in the morning while looking at the woods in my back yard and listening to the birds. You add the high cost of living in big cities and to me there is no comparison. Obviously, that of course does not stop so many living and enjoying the big city life. So was our son in New York City. And then Covid-19 happened. What was to be a short stay back home it is now nearing three months and it will likely take a lot longer. And his company is now allowing all employees to work from home the rest of the year. Heck, Twitter announced its employees can work from home permanently! This is kind of happening already in San Francisco it appears. I was interviewed a few days ago by a journalist working out of home also just outside New York City who told me he just can not see getting on the subway and then the elevator to then work with so many colleagues nearby. As long as this goes on, the more drastic changes we are all going to see in, well, everything. Then again, you can not do everything virtually, need that personal connection in your work group or whatever. And here is where I was leading after this very long intro: Manhattan Faces a Reckoning if Working From Home Becomes the Norm.

Even after the crisis eases, companies may let workers stay home. That would affect an entire ecosystem, from transit to restaurants to shops. Not to mention the tax base.

Well, I said the same after 911 and the financial crisis. We know what happened. So, time will tell again. But maybe this time is different, what do you think? Is being contrarian to look for a place in NYC or say downtown Ann Arbor? Probably but…the thought of so many people packed together just does not excite me much. You know, a nice cottage in northern Michigan or a place somewhere warm and a beach sure sounds more enticing. Not that I am actively looking…

Oh boy, and now we have Covid-19 Lingo. My three favs:

*Covidiot* or *Wuhan-ker*
One who ignores public health advice or behaves with reckless disregard for the safety of others can be said to display “covidiocy” or be “covidiotic”. Also called a “lockclown” or even a “Wuhan-ker”.

*Furlough Merlot*
Wine consumed in an attempt to relieve the frustration of not working. Also known as “bored-eaux” or “cabernet tedium”.

*Covid-10*
The 10lbs in weight that we’re all gaining from comfort-eating and comfort-drinking. Also known as “fattening the curve”.

Since we are on this mode of Covid-19 changes, how about we are finally coming to terms and hopefully to deal with The Sickness in our Food Supply. Personally, I recently signed up for a local farm share program and always trying (and failing) to eat less meat…but I am determined not to give up trying! Also, maybe it is a good practice to treat essential workers better and maybe we should be thankful for so many immigrants feeding us instead of still trying to build a phucking wall in the middle of a global pandemic, just saying.

A series of shocks has exposed weak links in our food chain that threaten to leave grocery shelves as patchy and unpredictable as those in the former Soviet bloc. The very system that made possible the bounty of the American supermarket—its vaunted efficiency and ability to “pile it high and sell it cheap”—suddenly seems questionable, if not misguided. But the problems the novel coronavirus has revealed are not limited to the way we produce and distribute food. They also show up on our plates, since the diet on offer at the end of the industrial food chain is linked to precisely the types of chronic disease that render us more vulnerable to Covid-19.

We all remember the movie “The Terminal”. And over the years, we read the news of travelers who got stranded in an airport for one reason or another. So, we are not surprised that we read of yet another one: Covid-19 lockdown fallout: German man living at Delhi airport since March 18. But this one is different, this dude has a criminal rap sheet and is wanted in Germany and, in this case, he is saying “hell no, I am not going back”…

Epic beatdown of these four men: CDC Director Redfield; FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn; Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar; and of course, President Trump. The Four Men Responsible For America’s COVID-19 Test Disaster.  Read it and weep, what an (ongoing) epic tragedy, wow! I did not know much about this Redfield dude, wow. God helps us all!

MILES & POINTS

HOT CREDIT CARD OFFERS: New: The CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum now offers 70k AA miles. The IHG Rewards Club card offering 140k points too, highest ever. For a standard workhorse card I recommend the 60k Chase Sapphire Preferred card. For a standard premium card I recommend the 50k Chase Sapphire Reserve card. For a standard 2% cash back card I recommend the Citi Double Cash card. Available with my links. Lets move on!

If you were looking for a summary of these cards: Is it Time to Get an Amex Hilton Card?. My plan was to drop the CNB card this year and get me an Amex Hilton Aspire (of course with my own links #zing!). But maybe I speed this up to take advantage of several extra corona enhanced benefits, not sure yet. There was never any point of having more than one premium travel rewards credit card. Then again, with travel shut down, maybe it is finally time to go all in on a cash back card as most readers should and give these premium cards the middle finger. Oh, this is something you will never see written at The Points Guy lol.

Good roundup: Roundup Of Airlines Offering Bonus Miles And Free Tickets For Traveling In 2020. Most of these you must take some action very shortly. Except the Southwest Double miles promo I registered everyone in my household just in case…

Some interesting choices here to use our free Hyatt night awards: Best International Category 1-4 Hyatt Hotels: Make The Most of Your Free Nights!

I am just not going to post here online shopping promos for a few extra miles. I am not going to bother, they won’t make a difference these pandemic days.

Capital One lost two transfer partners, Qatar and Hainan. Obviously, not the positive trend. But, I mean, who cares?

I don’t know why JetBlue took so long to do the right thing! JetBlue Extends Mosaic Status, Adds Gifting Option; Double Points On All JetBlue Mastercard Purchases & More.

TRAVEL

If you were planning to travel to Greece: Tips for Planning a Summer Trip to Greece – Yes, Greece Will Open Soon! No doubt Greece has done so many things right in handling the pandemic. Lets hope they continue to do so. What do I think? Well, I am not planning to go back this summer. And I think my already booked trip for November to run the Athens Marathon may not happen…it all takes one covidiot to start another outbreak.

The expression “Live Large” and its derivative that I just came up with “Fly Large” came to me when I saw this: Check Out The Inside Of The World’s Largest Private Jet That Looks Like A Flying Mansion.

Unique story here, you would have never guessed! First Lie-Flat Seats Were Installed by … Think You Know the Answer?

I like seeing trip reports from places that you do not see usually in travel sites: 40 Hours In The Disputed Territory of Nagorno Karabakh with Kids.

Wow, what a place! A very short guide to Union Glacier Camp.

Another country that has done a phenomenal job in handling Covid-19 is Vietnam as it looks to reopen to limited international travel in June.

PERSONAL FINANCE

Did you lose your job and your employer paid health insurance? Here is what to do, great illustration! You can copy the image and then enlarge it if you need to so you can see it better. You are welcome.

We are all spending less these days, except for groceries!  JPMorgan’s U.S. credit card holders spent 40% less due to coronavirus.

Credit card users who report household incomes of less than $39,000 reduced spending by 38%, while wealthier cardholders, with incomes of more than $92,000, reduced spending by 46%. The group says the difference largely reflects higher average spending by wealthier households.

The report showed essential spending, like on groceries and healthcare, initially spiked by 20% before falling back.

Spending on non-essential things fell by 50% and dropped 70% on restaurants.

ODDZ & ENDZ

Really amazing story, must read! The real Lord of the Flies: what happened when six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months.

Wow, what a story! The Confessions of Marcus Hutchins, the Hacker Who Saved the Internet. One of those stories you start and just can not set aside because you want to know what happens in the end. Good to see the kid went straight and did the right thing. Oh wait, did I give it away? Maybe…

I have never seen a bobcat do this, it will shock you! Bobcat Makes Huge Jump Over Water Look Effortless.

Holy cow, I had no idea! Why There’s a Single, Tiny Wire Encircling Manhattan. Mind blown. You can learn some stuff about Orthodox Jews in this short video. Sometimes we take stuff written thousands of years ago literally…when our societies have changed so much. I mean, we have wifi almost everywhere now! ๐Ÿ™‚

BLOG BUZZ

We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.

I listened to a podcast interviewing Bougie Miles. She got into miles and points because she wanted to travel to see the Barenaked Ladies in concerts around the world. Very interesting and unique way of getting into this hobby for sure. As far as this band goes, I saw them once live (for free) and, to me, their music does absolutely nothing. Actually, I thought it was painful but the drinks were free so I tolerated it lol. She is also big on casino type rewards and stuff like that. You know, like that Wyndham to/from Caesar Rewards merry go round many of us have done and it appears to be dead as of now, thanks bloggers. Her post will offer some other ways. But, come on, would you go to a casino right now with those huge rooms and so many people around? No, thanks I’ll pass! Me no quiero corona.

I wonder if Amex will shoot me down for the Hilton Aspire card. I have been quiet and a really good boy lately. Or maybe the RAT guys have me on a black list or something? Is American Express Is Cracking Down Hard On Approvals?

No, this is not a Miles to Memories link special. While there was another blog posted by them about how amazing the 140k IHG Rewards Visa card (it is really not, especially in these pandemic times!), here comes Shawn with: Someone Applied For a Credit Card In My Name & What To Do If It Happens to You. This sucks and takes time to take care of it. So, when other bloggers who specialize in selling credit cards and ALWAYS scream how amazing card offers are so you can click and apply using their links for the fat sales commission…you increase the chance this may happen to you and while you work it out sweating buckets they laugh sitting back enjoying the money from you! Be selective, be methodical, don’t be greedy ๐Ÿ™‚ You are welcome.

Called to close wife’s Citi AA Business Platinum Select Mastercard and was offered a $99 statement credit again so I guess we’ll keep it for another year. To be continued…with more of the same I am sure ๐Ÿ™‚

Look, I get it. We all want to go back to pre corona days and get out there, open and support the businesses that have been shut and enjoy life. But this is a little different you guys. Maybe we should listen to the public health folks? This virus can kill and, deep down, you know, we can recover from everything but we can’t recover anything if we are phucking DEAD! WTF to all the gun anti vaxxers QAnon gun nuts out there???? I saw one sign in the recent Lansing, Michigan “freedom” fighters protesting their right to go out there and infect others….oh wait…the sign said to the effect “US is not Socialist…Keep it Free” or something like that. I bet you this person keeps refreshing the screens to see if the stimulus and unemployment payments hit his account numerous times every day…Yeah, smh. It’s crazy.

That Elon Musk dude is such an asshole, wow!

When you have no idea what you are doing, you scream OBAMAGATE! Sad lol.

If you were not aware of Kraftwerk, I feel so bad for you. Actually, not really. But really the band meant so much. Check this out: These Kraftwerk Tracks Changed Music — and Detroit — History. Anyone from Detroit who used to listen to Mr. Mojo DJ at WJLB who was the only DJ playing Kraftwerk at the time?

Kraftwerk, the influential German electronic group, has been compared to The Beatles in it’s affect on music history. Hear three tracks that the group wrote or inspired, from Dรผsseldorf to Detroit.

Heading into the weekend y’all!

Remember when these two Boarding Area “experts” came out at the exact same time with a post selling this card a few days ago? One blogged about nine reasons you should have it, the other only had six reasons. Give it a few days and one of them is down to just three reasons now. Hey, anything it takes to sell merchandise! I don’t do this shit here. And probably this is why my site has only sold two cards last month and only one in May. Just sadness all around I guess.

Every time I hear or see “Blue Angels”.

And I leave you with this…Lol, so true!

COVID-19

A must read: The Risks – Know Them – Avoid Them. By Erin S. Bromage, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

After reading this, I feel much more informed and ready to face the risk of catching this virus. I highly encourage you to read this, it may save your life. Which has been one of the ulterior motives in keeping my blog alive. Yeah, it sounds strange huh? But it is true. Ok, lets get back on track. Beware, the site may not be up, the post went viral. Oops, that expression is probably not recommended in this new world!

Remember the formulae: Successful Infection = Exposure to Virus x Time

The biggest super-spreading events are:

  • Meat packing: In meat processing plants, densely packed workers must communicate to one another amidst the deafening drum of industrial machinery and a cold-room virus-preserving environment. There are now outbreaks in 115 facilities across 23 states, 5000+ workers infected, with 20 dead.

  • Weddings, funerals, birthdays: 10% of early spreading events

  • Business networking: Face-to-face business networking like the Biogen Conference in Boston in March. Or the businessman from Maine who spread the disease to Malaysia while on a business trip.

The reason to highlight these different outbreaks is to show you the commonality of outbreaks of COVID-19. All these infection events were indoors, with people closely-spaced, with lots of talking, singing, or yelling. The main sources for infection are home, workplace, public transport, social gatherings, and restaurants. This accounts for 90% of all transmission events. In contrast, infections while shopping appear to be responsible for 3-5% of infections.

When assessing the risk of infection (via respiration) at the grocery store or mall, you need to consider the volume of the air space (very large), the number of people (restricted), how long people are spending in the store (workers – all day; customers – an hour). Taken together, for a person shopping: the low density, high air volume of the store, along with the restricted time you spend in the store, means that the opportunity to receive an infectious dose is low.

If you are sitting in a well ventilated space, with few people, the risk is low.

This post reveals the national plan to fight Covid-19. Here it is: There Is No Plan. In case you have not noticed.

Why is the U.S. story so exceptional? As with everything in this pandemic, the story is complicated, and given how many levels of American government and leadership stumbled in their response, and how many nations and international institutions failed in the early stages, we should be careful not to overly attribute final outcomes of the disease to any single political decision or leader. But, in this case, what counts as “overly”? As the pandemic wears on, and even those other countries that had been slow to respond to the crisis turn their own corners, it is increasingly hard to hang our failures on anything but the president’s refusal to lead, and the total vacuum that has opened up at the heart of what should have been the country’s disease response. No clear federal clinical guidelines, no comprehensive national strategy of social distancing or shelter in place, no clearinghouse of best practices about how to avoid spreading the disease. No rapid mass production of PPE or other necessary equipment. And above all no use of federal powers to build out testing or contact-tracing capacity.

I have seen this moronic Plandemic loadofmegashit video online. Come on, stop falling for this non sense. The “Plandemic” conspiracy video, explained.

Just goes to show you how different the experiences in treating sick patients is with this new virus: These Michigan doctors treated coronavirus: Here’s what they learned. And maybe ventilators were over rated and we will likely have a glut, go short on ventilators! And some patients take a really long time to get over the virus. A really long time!

Just when you think you understand COVID, it changes. “It’s a very deceptive virus; to keep up with it, it is a challenge,” said Dr. Teena Chopra, corporate medical director for Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control at Detroit Medical Center and a Wayne State University professor. “And particularly, it is manifesting differently by age, by race, by sex.

This is really good advice on what to do: A Guide to Staying Safe as States Reopen. Can I eat at a restaurant? Can I go shopping? Can I hug my friends again? Experts weigh in.

The graphs are amazing. Yes, we here in the US have a long way to go, sad! Which countries do best in beating covid-19?

When you put it all together with this new virus…we just don’t know because, please sit down, it is so new!

I don’t have much here. I am not going to force on you inconsequential posts about gift card promos or Amex offers or whatever. I never did this before and not about to start now that we are living in a new travel reality. We start seeing some amazing cash fares by the way so when you see bloggers go on and on about traveling for free only if you click on their $$$ credit card links you can tell them to, well, whatever you want to tell them, just be nice. Or, even better, walk away and only support blogs that make a positive difference in your life. Especially ones that are independent and only have a few means of support! Like mine#hint.

Anyway, if you can fly round trip to Brazil for $200 why are you not just using a 2% cash back card for all your spending? And why even buy miles/points at this pandemic stage we are in, huh? I do like Dan’s disclaimer on top of the post about this deal, here it is:

Disclaimer: The health of DansDeals readers is this website’s paramount concern. For your sake and the sake of those around you, the best way for society to make it through COVID-19 with the lowest mortality rate is by staying at home. That being said, some people still need to travel home, others need to travel for essential or emergency purposes, and people can try to book for after they think COVID-19 will no longer be a threat. Remember to travel responsibly and take precautions as suggested by your local authorities to avoid spreading the virus.

Go back and read the first article in this post. Because I DO care about you and your health. Which should always come first, always!

TRAVEL

This is just a wonderful post: A month-long journey into the flavors and traditions of Peru’s favorite food: Papas

As many travel companies are facing an existential crisis these days, Airbnb had to let go 25% of its workforce, that is 1,900 people. But take a second to read how the CEO did it: A Message from Co-Founder and CEO Brian Chesky. You can say things about overpaid greedy CEOs. But also you can recognize how they handle themselves with class and…empathy! After reading this, I must admit my attitude towards Airbnb improved…I could not help it.

Lets keep traveling with our browser ๐Ÿ™ GlobalGaz comes up with his own list: 7 Off The Beaten Path Natural Wonders Of The World.  Some cool places and cool pictures to go with them, enjoy.

Most of us have been here: “A Sense of Sex and the Night” – the History of Piccadilly Circus. Fascinating history behind it.

This was a really fun read! Plenty of whiskey, few backpackers: The wild story behind Lonely Planet’s first Thailand guidebook.

One day I would love to go to Yemen. Damn, there’s some Interesting Stuff to See in Yemen. And especially take a swim in the beaches of Socotra!

PERSONAL FINANCE

I hope you do not have to touch your 401(k) now…Lost Your Job but Still Have a 401(k)? Here’s What to Do With It.

Long time readers of my blog probably remember Rick/Ingy who was THE blog troll. He has not commented here for a very long time, I miss those days. Anyway, one of his numerous trolling comments revolved how, in my real job, I am so overpaid because I am a proponent of passive investing/index funds. Warren Buffet: I would disagree quite violently that passive investing is dead. I am not sure how the notion was even conceived in the first place that it was dead!  Yeah, like I said, I really miss those days lol.

BLOG BUZZ

We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.

Allen Iverson with one of the best tweets of all time! If you don’t get it and laugh…what can I say?

A noticeable quote from a conference I attended last week…online. “Scammers follow the headlines”.

The cat is sick of your shit!

Look, I have never been a fan of buying miles/points when these travel companies sell them. It is recommended in EXTREMELY rare circumstances, as in, saving cash (true miles/points hobbyists always have some in the bank for true emergency trips!) AND booking right away (assuming cash fare did not go up…if it is even still there). This stance is not new. Don’t get me started that doing this only leads to eventual devaluations faster (LifeMiles anyone?). What is also not new is me stating the fact that bloggers make a lot of money by promoting this practice while pushing their affiliate links to their unsuspecting readers. This has nothing to do with having a blog niche by the way. Actually, I mean, look at this post. I dedicate one paragraph to this episode (Update: Added another one and an amazing photo below). So I made my long held stance public because I like to educate of course. I never thought of this blogger who apparently got really touchy about it and wished me I go back to my nuclear bunker (I wish I had one!) and eat my Pringles (I have been thinking about them ever since, I used to be a huge fan back in college lol). All I can say is things are really tough out there in travel land, I mean, they are all going through an existential crisis right now. But it is a new reality folks. And be kind to new parents, some of us have been there!

Breaking: Avianca, the airline behind LifeMiles, just filed for bankruptcy.

Speaking about businessmen…these two posts showed up almost at the same time. Do you think they both came up with 9 and 6 reasons to sell yet another travel rewards credit card? Or is it because… Sometimes I wonder if I did the same type of pumping/selling credit cards my conversion ratio would not be so abysmal huh? Yes, this card is available with my links, you can be first, shock me!

Wanna guess which side I belong?

Miles & points is a crazy HOBBY. U have to be mentally wired in a certain way, to put it mildly lol. Sadly, over the years it has become a big BUSINESS selling u a certain lifestyle. All TRAVEL related business right now are facing an existential crisis. Hobbyists are just bored.

Lets do another soccer story again. You all know I am a life long fan of AEL, the soccer team in my Greek hometown Larisa. We have a long history with our team. Back in the late 70s for a decade it was the Golden era that concluded with one of the epic feats of all sports, winning the Greek league championship in 1988. I wrote about it in this post with THE goal that meant everything on May 1, 1988. During that decade the team won another title (the Greek Cup) in 1985 and also made it to the final of the Greek Cup in 1982 and 1984 but lost both times. I remember going to Athens in 1982 with my dad to watch that Cup Final and remember so vividly how early in the game we almost scored first…how we all started celebrating as the ball was slowly and clearly was going into the net and how the ball bounced awkwardly on the awful pitch just inches from the goal line and changed direction only to hit the post and go out of bounds…If that had gone in, we would be all celebrating on the bus instead of bitching of yet another awful officiating performance favorable (again) to the rich team from Athens. Amazingly, the referee in the 1982 Greek Cup Final was the father of the referee who officiate the Cup Final in 2007 and it was the same two opponents again!

Ok, lets get back into it. I was in the US with commitments and I just could not travel back to Greece. The location of each Cup Final is picked before the season starts and that year we were lucky that the game was assigned to be played in nearby Volos, less than an hour away! So, the stadium was full of our fans so thirsty for the renaissance of our team back where it belonged! Huge underdogs again. I was in Chicago attending a conference that day. The game was at 8.30 am Chicago time and of course I left with my team jersey and scarf and walked to Greektown desperately looking for any local establishment showing the game on TV. I found one restaurant and everyone was a fan of the opposing team lol. We started superbly with a header in the 2nd minute to go ahead but the other team tied with a penalty kick just before halftime. And then in the 81st minute this magic happened, this player from Gabon on loan to our team from a Spanish club broke away and BANG, another goal that will remain in the history of the club!

Oh man…I wish I was there, this is what happened in the stands! And some other pics from that day. And something really weird happened that day. As I was watching the game in that restaurant in the Chicago Greektown a young man came in. The owner told me the kid is also from Larisa, he was new in the States and he was working there as a waiter. He introduced him to me and I found out he was from my neighborhood and as we talked I learned he also knew my cousin who had passed away in 1999 way too young. Talk about small world, wow.

With two credit card conversions in April and one in May…the momentum may be weakening for my blog to take over The Points Guy Inc., so sad! If these links are taken away I will join Mile Nerd to post once a month and move on, it is almost time after almost 8 years here. Then I will turn this to a true hobby ๐Ÿ™‚

Enjoy the week. Stay healthy and strong and…be patient.

And I leave you with this…

Covid-19 Futures, Banks Pump Money to Airlines and Hotels, Retirement Contributions, Tech Adoption

We bring you the different Covid-19 futures, banks pump money to airlines and hotels, retirement contributions, tech adoption in the US since 1900, the best Covid-19 coverage you can find anywhere I dare you, a list of all the friendly changes by the banks on their credit cards, free night extensions, elite status and expiration points, we travel to Nicaragua and Bhutan and, you know, I really need to finish this post and get to bed. Rest assured this post is yet another amazing one because I can’t quit you guys. Be like the reader who was first in May to get a card with my links, enjoy the Citi Double Cash card, it should be all cash back cards now that we are stuck at home! Yeah, it sucks but it sucks more if you get the virus and die ok?

I’ll see you Monday, enjoy the weekend. Lets continue this social distancing, it is working, don’t get greedy now for Pete’s sake. Say a prayer too, can’t hurt.

COVID-19

This will explain all about the vaccine development efforts under way: The race for coronavirus vaccines: a graphical guide.

I almost skipped this read, I am so glad I didn’t. It is about a doctor at the University of Michigan hospital next door. Heck, some of the photos and scenes he describes in local parks I am so well aware of. In fact, I may have seen him walk these trails as I am running around, small world hey? Article has it all, the path of a doctor who also likes architecture, the tight bond with his family, incredible tragedy due to failures and addiction, the severe strains these medical workers are undergoing with Covid-19 and more, wow: ‘Let’s Save Some Lives’: A Doctor’s Journey Into the Pandemic. Andrew Ibrahim was just finishing his surgical residency in Michigan when the coronavirus surge hit. It took a lifetime’s lessons to face the challenge.

We need to be prepared for this. Then again, never before there was such a concerted and concentrated effort to find a vaccine! What happens if a coronavirus vaccine is never developed? It has happened before. Article near the end lays out some ways what it is going to be like and, oh boy, it is not going to be good.

Since we are on this path what is ahead: Three potential futures for Covid-19: recurring small outbreaks, a monster wave, or a persistent crisis. What do you think is going to happen? I am looking around and see scenes everyone out mingling in beaches, national parks, state capitols (Lansing in Michigan), Atlanta and continued attempts from the current administration to get the economy back to normal…

This is about Laurie Garrett: She Predicted the Coronavirus. What Does She Foresee Next? If you want to feel upbeat you better skip this article, you have been warned.

“I’m quite certain that this is going to go in waves,” she added. “It won’t be a tsunami that comes across America all at once and then retreats all at once. It will be micro-waves that shoot up in Des Moines and then in New Orleans and then in Houston and so on, and it’s going to affect how people think about all kinds of things.”

But there is one part of the story she couldn’t have predicted: that the paragon of sloppiness and sluggishness would be the United States. “I never imagined that,” she said. “Ever.”

The highlights — or, rather, lowlights — include President Trump’s initial acceptance of the assurances by President Xi Jinping of China that all would be well, his scandalous complacency from late January through early March, his cheerleading for unproven treatments, his musings about cockamamie ones, his abdication of muscular federal guidance for the states and his failure, even now, to sketch out a detailed long-range strategy for containing the coronavirus. Having long followed Garrett’s work, I can attest that it’s not driven by partisanship. She praised George W. Bush for fighting H.I.V. in Africa. But she called Trump “the most incompetent, foolhardy buffoon imaginable.”

What was it like for the doctors in Wuhan? From The Frontlines: A Steep Learning Curve, a Bittersweet End.

I have stated this before…that someway somehow I think that this virus has been with us way earlier than thought. And news like this makes me believe it even more! French hospital discovers it treated coronavirus patient in December.

This story made me cry, you have been warned: The Morgue Worker, the Body Bags and the Daffodils.

Must read: Profile of a killer: the complex biology powering the coronavirus pandemic. If you were going to pick just one to read in this section, make it this one. We have so much to learn about this one phucking virus! And just brace for a long time before we are all comfortable burning miles to fly anywhere we want in a moment’s notice, so sad.

MILES & POINTS

HOT CREDIT CARD OFFERS: New: The CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum now offers 70k AA miles. There is an offer for the United Explorer card offering 60,000 miles.

This is really good: Summary of Consumer-Friendly Changes to Card Benefits and Loyalty Programs. So many changes to keep track, good to see them all in one post.

If anyone cares: Caesars Rewards: Elite Extension, Easier To Earn Elite Status & Pause On Rewards Credits Expiring. I was never into gambling…I just don’t see how gambling can be done the way it was before Covid-19.

United staff better sharpen their resumes: United Plans More Than 7,000 Pilot and Management Layoffs After Relief Rules Expire. The loyalty program to bail them out was not going to save them once again. I think United is the most realistic of what is ahead. I am wondering if we will see further consolidation by the end of the year. Wild guess: Southwest buying United? Good thing I did not transfer a bunch of Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United!

Expect more promos and of course devaluations: Marriott Raises $920 Million In Cash From American Express & Chase. Can you imagine where all these airline and hotel companies would be without their loyalty programs and the banks?

It is getting ridiculous to keep track of all the changes lately! Master List: Extensions On Hotel Free Night Certs, Elite Status & Points Expiration.

DO NOT BUY MILES AND POINTS! Unless you want to make the bloggers pushing them to you rich or something. You should read blogs that have a built in quality standard, it is called ethics, something the vast majority of “travel expert” bloggers are certainly missing, especially in these difficult times. And go out of your way to help these few bloggers left before they give up ok? Missed Out on Air Canada Aeroplan Miles Sale at a Penny Each? Congrats, You’ve Dodged a Bullet!

Seriously, don’t buy miles. It’s ridiculous.

TRAVEL

Nice trip report with some great photos from Nicaragua.

This one is mostly about soccer. But why am I sticking it in the Travel section? Because it is my blog and I can do what I want lol. Okay, seriously, it is about what they did in Iceland to upgrade their soccer which has led to some great national team results lately, I really enjoyed it. Soccer at the End of the World.

PERSONAL FINANCE

This is always timely: Where should you put your retirement contributions?

This is very good: Which Portfolio Is Right For You? So which portfolio is right for you? The one that you can stick to.

This really belongs in the Oddz & Endz. There is guy in Spain who is a fan of North Korea and sets you up to do business there, for a fee of course. Wanna Do Business in Pyongyang? Call North Korea’s Guy in Spain. He looks like a blowhard too…actually, if it was not for this gig the guy would starve I am guessing.

relates to Wanna Do Business in Pyongyang? Call North Korea’s Guy in Spain

This is a long article that goes way back into history and charts the conservative movement and over the years we managed to find ourselves governed (if you can call it that) by Trump. Very educational imho. We go back to the Bush dynasty early years, the rise of the hedge funders and stuff like that. Read it while you practice social distancing at your porch or wherever you like: How Greenwich Republicans Learned to Love Trump.

MUST CLICK: Technology Adoption in the US. Press Play and sit back and marvel at this! This will get you so excited you will immediately use my links to get your grandma the amazing Chase Sapphire Preferred card, right? Riiiiight? Ok, don’t answer it please.

BLOG BUZZ

We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.

I wish I could get my daughter involved in this to celebrate her graduation. Graduation 2020: Some Good News with John Krasinski Ep. 6.

Travel With Grant blog turned 7 years old. We are both veterans and have witnessed the death of so many other blogs!

Going a little deeper on them cards offering extra miles and points on grocery spend: Two great, one good, and one marginal grocery store earning boost

Don’t spend your way to Southwest elite status by putting ridiculous amount of spend on the Southwest cards, okay?

Sometimes I feel the second wave will be here way earlier, brace yourselves!

So sad to see this: Stranglers’ Dave Greenfield Dead at 71 After Coronavirus Battle. 2020 just continues to suck! My fav Stranglers song (which was not typical of them) was “Golden Brown”. Years later after its release it was revealed that it was about heroin and not a love song! Some other songs from this band you may want to check out are: “Peaches”, “No More Heroes”, “Nice ‘N’ Sleazy” and “Hanging Around”.

The Stranglers  – Golden Brown

And then, bang, the very next day we lost a true legend! Kraftwerk Co-Founder Florian Schneider Dead at 73.  Kraftwerk’s pioneering use of keyboards and synthesizers would later inspire artists in all genres of the musical spectrum, from rock and electronic music to hip-hop and pop. I am so sad, Kraftwerk was one of my favorite bands of all time. I managed to see them live twice and their live shows were something so unique it is hard to put it in words. It was all about the machines, the robots, the electronics way before these things were even around! I have so many favorites I don’t want to do this justice here and even pick one, I am torn. So just a photo. #RESPECT

The 2020 Ann Arbor Art Fair has been canceled. And the stay at home order in Michigan has been extended to May 28 with only the car manufacturing industry starting up under strict guidelines next week.

Remember back before the virus came into our lives, The Points Guy kept hiring and had many open job positions listed on its website. Well, ooops, they all vanished, so sad. Maybe I should bid for some talent at last. Bwahahahaha. With one conversion down this month TBB Inc. is going on a major offensive! Bwahahahaha2. BREAKING: Thanks to reader G who made a $50 Paypal donation and asked me to reinstate Wednesday posts. Every supportive gesture like this keeps this blog going. The momentum is definitely turning now, there is a rumor that there was an emergency meeting called over at TPG Inc, they are afraid I can feel it. Bwahahahaha3.

And I leave you with this…

Face Masks Everywhere, Extra Miles on Groceries, Diamond Princess Nightmare, Warren Buffett AMA

We bring you the best coverage of Covid-19, posts about face masks everywhere, how to earn extra miles on groceries, we go aboard the Diamond Princess nightmare, Warren Buffett AMA, banks are trying to get us all to spend more in these pandemic times, we learn about ghost airline Air Sinai, go around the world in livestream cameras, check out Do Not Disturb signs around the world, visit a unique hotel in Uruguay, what to do if you lose a spouse, meet the crappy world of dropshipping wannabes, revisit an amazing story about some murders in Texas and ponder if an innocent man was executed, see the state of press freedom while our buffoon President calls the press the enemy of the people like Stalin who he probably never heard of, a crazy dude running a marathon every day, getting some unsolicited but good advice because I care for you, see how a fellow hobbyist gave up on the hobby and probably think harder if we all should do the same and more while looking for a conversion like a guy with the remote trying to find a live event on ESPN that is not ridiculous…See you Friday, keep the faith.

COVID-19

Is it just me or is Bill Gates becoming THE authority figure to listen to in these pandemic times or what? Must read update from Bill on What you need to know about the COVID-19 vaccine. Probably the most educational piece I read on where we stand on vaccines! We will get there…eventually, we all hope so!

Yeah, really! Why the Coronavirus Is So Confusing. A guide to making sense of a problem that is now too big for any one person to fully comprehend. Must read!

But much else about the pandemic is still maddeningly unclear. Why do some people get really sick, but others do not? Are the models too optimistic or too pessimistic? Exactly how transmissible and deadly is the virus? How many people have actually been infected? How long must social restrictions go on for? Why are so many questions still unanswered?

Be careful out there, there is a lot of crap all over! Pandemic Science Out of Control. A toxic legacy of poor-quality research, media hype, lax regulatory oversight, and vicious partisanship has come home to roost in the search for effective treatments for COVID-19. Yeah, it’s sad! And for God’s sake, never ever inject disinfectants okay!

First is the willingness on the part of clinicians to abandon the prime dictum of medicine, to do no harm, and rush into treatments that not only may not work but may well cause serious harm.

The second issue exposed by the pandemic is the role the media invariably play in hyping science and the physicians who purvey it without regard to the quality of the underlying studies.

Third, as has been disturbingly revealed over and over in the past decade or more, too much biomedical research simply isn’t very good.

Maybe TIME magazine should name Face Mask as the person of the year? How the face mask became the world’s most coveted commodity. The global scramble for this vital item has exposed the harsh realities of international politics and the limits of the free market. Even drug dealers have diversified into selling masks now WTF!

More details into the PREDICT program. Deadly Leaps. These scientists saw the coronavirus coming. Now they’re trying to stop the next pandemic before it starts. There are so many viruses out there!

Mowing down forests for large-scale agriculture, harvesting timber, and sprawling cities — all these activities were forcing bats into close quarters with people. “It’s not the animals’ fault for carrying these diseases,” he said. “These are things that we do to the environment around us.” Over the past century, the human population has exploded. At the height of the 1918-1919 Spanish flu pandemic, the global population was around 1.8 billion, less than a quarter of what it is today. In the past century, millions of humans have spent years slaughtering wildlife; cutting down trees; placing cows, chickens, and pigs in close contact with wild animals — providing ample opportunity for viruses to make a deadly leap.

I was never a fan of George W. Bush. Donald Trump’s Presidency though has been the best thing that could have been done to enhance his legacy! And then you get an incredibly powerful message to us all and all I can say is…well done George!

Great explainer about these antibody tests we have all been hearing about and had no clue what they were…among so many other things before this tiny phucking virus came into our lives and messed them up: Should You Get an Antibody Test?

And now the Chinese are trolling us…

We are all getting tired of this quarantining thing and we might be ready to move on, but COVID-19 isn’t; therein lies the rub. It sure does…

MILES & POINTS

HOT CREDIT CARD OFFERS: New: The CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum now offers 70k AA miles. There is an offer for the United Explorer card offering 60,000 miles.

Finally it looks like the banks got the message that life has changed and they should do something to get their credit card holders to spend more. These Credit Cards Are Adjusting to the “New Normal” with Great Bonus Offers. Amex giving streaming and wireless statement credits, more points on groceries and restaurant delivery and take out and other select business purchases. Chase cards go big on grocery spend until June 30. And Citi will now allow statement credits on its Prestige card for restaurant and grocery spend.

For a more detailed look on what Amex is doing with its premium cards, check this out: Amex Plantinum New Benefits and Beyond – What Do You Do Now?

If you want to get more details on how to maximize your grocery spend: Grocery Shopping = Points Galore: Sizing Up the New Grocery Bonus Offers. Very nice table with the ranking of how you can get the most bang for your grocery buck! Personally, when I am done with the 5%x quarterly grocery spend on my Chase Freedom card, I will borrow son’s Chase Sapphire Reserve (and will Venmo him what I spend on it) and then move on to my own World Of Hyatt card…

As I said, banks are really trying to make us get and keep their cards! Hilton free weekend nights become anytime nights valid for 2 years. I may go for the premium Amex Hilton Aspire card later this year as this appears to be the final year I am holding on to the CNB card…I just need to find a way to use the CNB points! First world problem to have I guess ๐Ÿ™‚

Enhancements to Free Weekend Night Rewards

Weekend night becomes anytime night

Unexpired and new Free Weekend Night rewards issued through December 31, 2020 can now be used any night of the week.

New free nights valid for 24 months

New weekend free night awards issued from May 1 to December 31 2020 will be valid for 24 months from the date of issuance (previously 12 months).

And I was also targeted for this by Citi: To thank you for your continued loyalty, every dollar spent on purchases made with your eligible1 Citi® / AAdvantage® credit card that posts to your AAdvantage® account between May 1 – Dec. 31, 2020, will count as 1 mile toward Million MilerSM status. One million miles give you AA Lifetime Gold (and 35,000 bonus AA miles). 2 million miles you give you Lifetime Platinum (and for one-way systemwide upgrades). Tempting ๐Ÿ™‚

Most of the major banks now allow you six (instead of three) months to satisfy the minimum spending when you get a new travel rewards credit card and earn the signup bonus. So, no excuses! If you are still having issues completing this step, this hobby is not for you!

Most of the credit cards mentioned above can be applied with my links. Got questions? Ask away

TRAVEL

Anyone ever flown Air Sinai? The Ghost Airline That Has Linked Cairo and Tel Aviv for Decades. Fascinating indeed.

We may not be traveling these days but that does not stop us from traveling virtually! Travel the World with These Livestream Cameras.

Maybe this belongs in the Covid-19 section but it is my blog and I can do what I want. So I am sticking it here and there is nothing you can do about it lol. 27 Days in Tokyo Bay: What Happened on the Diamond Princess. OMG, can you believe being on board? This article takes you inside the ship and…you won’t believe what you read next!

Do Not Disturb signs from all over the world, by country!

Anyone been to Club Hotel Casapueblo in Puntal del Este, Uruguay? Found a reference to it in a Greek travel website. Apparently, the hotel was built by an artist over many years. It looks so unique!

PERSONAL FINANCE

Good article, hope it does not happen to you anytime soon! 13 Financial Moves to Make After Losing a Spouse.

Everything Warren Buffett said in the 2020 Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting. Oh, by the way, he sold ALL airline stocks! I picked the best three:

Warren gives a shout out to Powell: “The Fed acted in mid-March [on the 23rd] in a huge way that enabled things play out they way that they have. Businesses who raised cash in late March should write a thank you note to the Fed. We do know the consequences of doing nothing.”

Buffett said he made a mistake in investing across the airline business. He mistakenly believed airline earnings “would go up across the industry. The airline business has changed in a major way and the future of airlines is much less clear. [Airlines] have too many planes.”

“Negative interest rates are the most interesting question in economics. We’re facing a period where we will test whether the world can continue to do this. We are doing things where we don’t know the ultimate outcome.”

ODDZ & ENDZ

Texas Monthly does it again. The Murders at the Lake. Wow, amazing story! In 1982 a brutal triple homicide shook the city of Waco and soon became one of the most confounding criminal cases in Texas history—one that still haunts the many people who have tried to solve it.

Avoid these people! ‘It’s bullshit’: Inside the weird, get-rich-quick world of dropshipping Not sure whether to laugh or cry after reading about these youngsters trying to get rich. I actually feel sad for them.

BLOG BUZZ

We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.

ANNOUNCEMENT: If you have not posted anything in three months (six if I really like you) your blog will no longer be listed on the world famous Blogs I Like list. You have been warned, time for a cleanup. If you keep linking to these blogs your blog does not deserve to be in my esteemed list.

Thanks to the reader who asked for my Plastiq referral link. I do not have one. For several reasons, among them being I do not like paying fees, I do not like how their marketing hammered me offering me bribes to use them, security reasons (I am paranoid), etc. Besides, I only feel comfortable with a few services I use myself and can recommend in good conscience. Of them, Rakuten is one I definitely recommend for online shopping. They have extended their great deal where you can sign up with MY REFERRAL LINK and get $30 off buying at least $30 worth of stuff you probably need or do not need. In other words, Freeeeeeeeeeeeeee! And I also get $30 #winning.

RIP to Mike Huckaby, a Detroit deep house legend!

Someone recently asked me when I am buying a Tesla. Say what? NEVER! Sticking with Ford and, besides, what the hell is wrong with this Elon dude, wow!

It was an easy week of running to recover from last week’s half marathon PR. Will be stepping it up again this week…

We are all struggling at home. We are not used to this, we are social beings. But we need to keep it up and stick to it…to turn things around. But it is a bit disheartening to hear son say “I miss the office” lol.

I could not resist.

The Freddie Awards happened. It takes a lot of nerve to do this in these pandemic times #meaninglessmarketingbullshit

Amex RAT team is getting really absurd now! American Express Airline Incidental Clawbacks Intensify – Now Clawing Back 2 Years Worth Of Credits. WTF happens if they do this on a card you long ago canceled and…remains unpaid for months and ruin your credit? MFers!

It is really funny seeing Boarding Area credit card marketers being mad at TPG lol. Are we starting to see Red Ventures phasing out the 6.7 tall Brian?

Hobbyist friend gets out of the game for cash. This will NEVER happen in any other blogs because, you know, you do not cut your own throat!

And I leave you with this…
