Marriott has come out with a credit card offer that offers 5 free nights for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card. This offer now ends October 29.

Since not much travel is happening, Chase continues to try to make its cardholders hold on to the cards: Chase Sapphire Cards Temporary Enhancements: 2x/3x On Grocery; Travel Credit Additional Options. No big deal as I am currently earning 5x on Groceries for a year with the Chase Freedom Flex card.

Not a bad idea for Delta to poach some elites from other airlines. Now if you could actually fly all the required flights to keep the Delta status until 2022…Delta Will Match Your Status with Other Major Airlines.

In an era with so many hotel brands anyone can hardly keep track of with a global pandemic we have not seen in a century, here comes Radisson Rewards with a new brand, WTF! Radisson Launches “Radisson Individuals” Soft/Conversion Brand.

One day we can burn some miles/points in some of these again: 20 Stunning Hotel Rooms With Private Pools.

I have 4,249,189 miles/points. It is an addiction and a ridiculous burden lol. I love helping newbies and long time readers can also help you in the comments too.

TRAVEL

I post some photos from my road trip to the Northwest Michigan area below in the Blog Buzz section, I hope you like them!

No comments needed: The grit and glory of New Belgrade’s communist architecture.

Screw 4k, Japan in 8k, wow!

Reading this made me vomit: Travel influencers, meet authoritarian regimes. The influencer industry has grown to be cozy with some unsavory governments, but its clout might not be as effective as it once was. I am still vomiting, nothing has turned me off so much in travel lately.

COVID-19

This is painful to read. Inside the Fall of the CDC. How the world’s greatest public health organization was brought to its knees by a virus, the president and the capitulation of its own leaders, causing damage that could last much longer than the coronavirus.

I have blogged about the coming hell to break loose right after the first vaccine comes. This article explains it all: First, a Vaccine Approval. Then Chaos and Confusion. Brace yourselves.

Have you wondered how Africa seems to be handling the Covid pandemic better? Me too! Here is why: Five reasons why Covid-19 has been less deadly than elsewhere. Have we become a shithole country? Answer in the comments!

The Financial Times did a thorough investigation about China and Covid-19: What Went Wrong in Wuhan. Were they slow in Wuhan? Absolutely! Was the system of governance a major reason for this, oh hell yes! In a bizarre and contrarian way, was the Chinese system of governance instrumental in getting control over the virus? The honest and sad answer is yes. Irrespective of all this, there is no excuse for countries to totally screw up the response to it!

“Most of Asia really respected this, had systems ready to go, and did a lot of work in January and February for the day that was coming when they were going to get smashed,” said Dr Fisher. “Unfortunately, most of the rest of the world needed to get smashed to have that realisation. As we said in our February [WHO China delegation] report, this virus can have devastating health, social and economic effects but the world is not ready, in capacity or in mindset, to deal with it.” Prof Wang added that for all of the Chinese system’s shortcomings in the earliest days and weeks of the outbreak, the rest of the world should have been on high alert. As soon as human-to-human transmission was confirmed and Wuhan went into quarantine a few days later, countries could have prepared themselves for its arrival as effectively as Taiwan and South Korea did, among others. Most did not. In particular the Trump administration’s response will go down as one of the worst national security failures in the history of the US republic, with the virus breaching even the White House and infecting the president himself. As Prof Wang said: “For other countries not to have taken [the virus] seriously, there’s just no excuse.”

I like the advice in this article: How to make this winter not totally suck, according to psychologists.

With cases exploding everywhere, here we go again with more countries to follow: Ireland goes back on lockdown. Also in my city of Ann Arbor with our daughter in a dorm: Washtenaw County issues two-week stay home order for U-M students. Meanwhile, the President praised himself in the last debate that he brought back football, sad lol!

We all have learned so much about viruses, epidemiology, vaccines, antibodies and I can go on and on. But in this article you will learn about adjuvants. Adju, what??? There is a tree in Chile that is absolutely essential to vaccines, wow! The Tree That Could Help Stop the Pandemic. The rare Chilean soapbark tree produces compounds that can boost the body’s reaction to vaccines.

PERSONAL FINANCE

I really enjoy reading the memos by Howard Marks. Because they are so eloquently written: Coming Into Focus.

I love the behavioral aspects of finance. And crashes and bubbles and stuff like that. I really enjoyed reading this: Psychology, Behavior & Markets. I am not a quote type of guy/blogger but how can you argue with this one by French philosopher Blaise Pascal?

“All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone”.

If I hear another mention of the word “unprecedented” I think I am going to flip! Visualizing 200 Years of Interest Rates in the US. Wow…

CURRENT EVENTS/POLITICS

Yeah, what a year! New York’s Year from Hell. Son is leaving at the end of the month as well.

Looks like early voting is shattering records, great to see! It is a privilege in a true democracy to change governments in the voting booth and not with violence like we see in banana republics. Let’s see if we become one soon, sad lol. And check some of these out, which one is your favorite? Eight of America’s Most Unusual Polling Places. Mine is this one below 🙂

Amazing work here: The Annual Winners of the Photomicrography Competition.

This is pretty cool. Select a year and it will return all the words that were first used in print that year: Time Traveler.

Hats off to this guy. And you read this and can’t help but wonder how many morons are out there, dear Lord! How a Fake Rent-a-Hitman Site Became an Accidental Murder-for-Hire Sting Operation.

BLOG BUZZ

We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.

Spirit finally realized that having a decent frequent flier program can squeeze some major dinero from the banks, so it decides to finally start one, lol! Spirit goes revenue-based, makes elite status easier with new Free Spirit program.

Even Capital One bank is increasing the signup bonuses for its cards. If you are really desperate and shut out everywhere else, I guess you could get a couple of hundred backs cash back on the Quicksilver card and the SavorOne card. I mean, really desperate that is!

Public enemy #1 of the churning hobby is the Amex RAT guys, wow! Another Wave of Amex Shutdowns is Underway.

My running is interrupted until further notice. Lots of walking instead. Old sciatica issue has come back after several years, last time it was taken care of by a cortizone shot in my lower spine and I hope it does not get to that again. I am really sad about this, I just can not see myself breaking any new PRs for a while, boo!

Did a road trip to Northwest Michigan to finally visit the “Tunnel of Trees” area, a 19 mile drive from Cross Village to Harbor Springs. Also took a drive through Petoskey. Lots of domestic tourists doing the same thing. Mega trips are out, road trips are in!

I saved the best for last for you Rams 🙂

The two poster blogger boys in Boarding Area do not even hide it anymore. Give the ghost writer a raise, WTF!

Posted just two minutes apart LOL!

I need to get someone to Hawaii in late November. How would you do it? Getting hard to keep track of which airlines fly there and all the different testing requirements!

One Chase Freedom Flex card minimum spend done. Working on that 30% $6k spending bonus on the Southwest card next. As I get new cards I have decided to let some old ones go, bye bye one Discover and one old Freedom card. Wife hardly ever uses her no annual fee Chase Ink Cash card, thinking about letting it rip too. I still have not closed the CNB card, waiting to get a coffee mug burning my last 2k points, it was backordered lol. I am thinking about going for that Marriott card with the 5 free nights and burning them on the Marriott resort in northwest Michigan Gregg Frequent Miler likes but not sure if I will pull the trigger, try to convince me please. The $450 Capital One bank bonus is in, easily transferred into it $50k and held for three months from an investment account at TD Ameritrade, amount that was just sitting in cash earning nothing anyway. All the other bank bonuses I see are small for the hassle, I like easy these days. How long do Chase referrals take to show up?

Took my wife out for a nice dinner at a nice Ann Arbor restaurant, the Chop House. Her 32nd birthday, again! It still has a 50% off the whole bill birthday special! We are not vegetarians by the way lol.

And I leave you with this…

TOP PICKS

I am starting a new blog section titled TOP PICKS. For readers who have been here for a while it is similar to the “Best of Web” posts I used to do. I pick some content that deserves special mention in these now weekly curated blog posts I do. As I think everything I post here is a must read, think of these in this section as the MUST must reads! 🙂

You like Documentaries? You ‘ll love this site!

Documentary Mania

You can watch documentaries like my favorite Free Solo about the amazing Alex Honnold solo free climbing Yosemite’s 3,000 ft high El Capitan Wall. Or Unfit about the current US President and, well, how amazingly fit is to hold such a position. For you lonely undecided voter who found my site by accident…

This next site will blow your mind. Especially if you love history!

Histography

Welcome to Histography, where every dot is a historic event from Wikipedia. Click on the dots to learn more about the specific event. You may end up spending hours on this site, I apologize.

A 36 minute movie that at some parts is so visually stunning it will, wait for it, shock you!

The Last Honey Hunter

Movie does not have a good ending, you have been warned. It is filmed in Nepal and I don’t add things to the Top Picks section if they do not deserve it.

Marriott has come out with a credit card offer that offers 5 free nights for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card. But you must be careful about Marriott’s rules.

American Airlines is making some positive changes for its elite flyers. But not earth shattering. If no progress on the Covid front and some more government help it is hard to see all the airlines continuing to bleed billions, tick tock. American Airlines Makes Positive Changes to AAdvantage Program for 2021. Son managed to achieve Platinum Pro elite status and will keep it until 1/31/22. But since business travel collapsed post Covid he has no realistic chance this year to achieve Executive Platinum, which was a certainty before everything changed.

The New York Times takes a shot here: Airline Miles Programs Sure Are Profitable. Are You the Loser? Kind of  hilarious to get the The Points Guy editor to admit that cash back cards are the best lol.

Decent hotel promo from Radisson Rewards: 25% Back On Awards, 15% Back On Giftcard Purchases.

And you can register for the latest Accor ALL promotion to earn 3x on hotels in North and Central America HERE.

TRAVEL

Landlopers with some really good thoughts on Traveling in 2020: Thoughts & Trip Styles For All Comfort Levels. I think I belong in the first categories, as in Stay at Home, Roadtrips and regional travel when I am daring (we visited the Michigan Upper Peninsula in August, a four night hotel adventure). And that’s all for us. I don’t know, the vision of seeing myself or my loved ones in the prone position connected to a ventilator because I could not take it anymore and took a trip somewhere far just does not appeal to me. If you do, please try to minimize spreading the virus. And if you get it during your trip, maybe add some of those pics from the hospital or your bed being sick next to the ones you laying flat in your business class seat ok?

Amazing timelapse video of Singapore: Lion City Rising.

If you thought the Singapore city video above was awesome, you have not seen anything yet. Like this absolutely stunning 4k video about Switzerland.

Well, since we can not visit both Singapore and Switzerland let’s go out of space and watch One hour of active satellites orbiting Earth (sped up by 240x). You look at that and you start wondering when these things will just keep crashing onto one another and…crash through your house roof!

Wait, let’s go even further next by playing around this interactive site with 100,000 stars! TBB is going intergalactic baby! Next best thing to flying into space if you ask me. And freeeee!

COVID-19

There are many of these dashboards out there but here is the one from the World Health Organization.

Here is another one, check out what happens on the screen! COVID Cases Since June in the US States. You see a whole lot in red, coincidence? Wake up Trump fans, come on, do your research! 😉

We all can not wait for this pandemic to end! But how realistic is this? This next article will show what is in store for us. And it is not good. How do pandemics end? We are in the grip of a pandemic like none other in living memory. While people are pinning their hopes on a vaccine to wipe it out, the fact is most of the infections faced by our ancestors are still with us.

Sometime in the past week I think it hit us that this is not going to happen anytime soon. There is no getting ‘back to normal,’ experts say. The sooner we accept that, the better. I was looking so forward to have my mother stay with us from Greece in May and then the phucking virus hit and life changed. But we humans are resilient…

This will shock you. Hope we learn from this to attack FAST next time! See in one minute how Covid-19 has torn across the U.S.

The latest thread update by Andy Slavitt.

With so many still being infected, sometimes I find myself saying “screw it, let’s just get it and be done with it” and move on. But then I read articles like this and change my mind ” ‘I Feel Like I Have Dementia’: Brain Fog Plagues Covid Survivors”.

Oh, this happened in New Zealand on October 11, 2020. And you want to give the one in charge four more years to kill even more, isn’t 215,000 in body bags enough, WTF!

If you ever wondered about this: How the Coronavirus Death Toll Compares to Other Deadly Events From American History. We are living through one of the greatest ongoing tragedies in our  history!

This is a 36 page report of the 2020 Freedom on the Net and the pandemic’s digital shadow. Obviously, read if interested and have the time. Or just take a look at the many graphs and charts at least.

PERSONAL FINANCE

We are all trying to cope in this era of super low interest rates. It sure is not easy and we all need a major rethink about the subject and the role bonds play in investment portfolios: Game Over. Some really good commentary here…

Something that is still going strong apparently. And kind of fun to learn about. The economics of vending machines. Sure looks better than having a blog bwahahaha.

I feel so awful for everyone in the movie theater business and I hope they get some help, especially the small independent theaters out there! The fate of the American movie theaters looks terribly bleak. One of the things I missed so much is going to the movies to watch a film and eat popcorn!

I was asked by a blog reader what I think about the bank bonuses the Doctor of Credit blog usually writes about, here is my response.

CURRENT EVENTS/POLITICS

I found this article extremely disturbing! How a Road Trip Through America’s Battlegrounds Revealed a Nation Plagued by Misinformation. So many morons…stop clicking on clickbait shit!

No, I did not watch the town halls, I have already voted! I heard QAnon fans are against pedophilia #wow.

ODDZ & ENDZ

Remember this dude? The (Mostly) True Story of Vanilla Ice, Hip-Hop, and the American Dream. In 1990, there was no star bigger than the man born Robert Van Winkle. But just as quickly as he became the bestselling rapper the world had ever seen, he became a pariah. Now, 30 years after “Ice Ice Baby,” he’s ready to talk about it all—and it may change how you feel about him. I think we may have been a little too tough on this guy, we all make mistakes when we are so young!

I firmly believe teachers are heroes. And they deserve to get paid more. This is a very touching example, it should shock you. Or at least humble you! Albert Camus’ letter to his teacher after winning Nobel Prize for Literature is a heartbreaker.

A French dude is doing this, I could not stop laughing, I am sorry! The etiquette school for China’s super-rich.

The successful bloggers are the ones who likely pay someone to write these for them, SAD! And here I am busting my ass smh, it is what it is I guess…

My running has been interrupted. Again. I think I tried to come back too soon, got sciatica flared up. Lots of walking lately in the woods around Ann Arbor. Love the pic below!

There is a LOT in this post. You all enjoy the weekend and thanks for spending some of it reading my blog. If you are not into the frequent flyer miles/points game please feel free to skip the Miles & Points section.

Let’s get the party started, got my double dose of dexamethasone! #joking

This baby blog of mine started primarily for my travel hobby. It has evolved to a blog dedicated to world domination and freeeedom. Oh, wait, maybe it is the dexamethasone kicking in? Ok, wait, where was I? Oh yeah, let’s circle back to travel. This is a MUST read if you are interested in the topic!

Inside the Airline Industry’s Meltdown

Please take some time to read it. Just one selected excerpt below. The article looks more into how KLM is dealing with this, gets into economics, how things are going to change, carbon emissions and lots more, enjoy!

In 1998, airlines sold 1.46bn tickets for one kind of flight or another. By 2019, that number had shot up to 4.54bn. This year has undone it all. Early in March, the International Air Transport Association (Iata) published two potential scenarios. The more extreme one forecast a global loss of revenue of $113bn. By mid-April, about 14,400 passenger planes around the world – 65% of the global fleet – had been placed into storage…By June, Iata had to issue a revision: Revenues will fall by $419bn this year, precisely half of what airlines earned in 2019. [ Holy mother of God!]

The prestigious medical journal The New England Journal of Medicine was founded in 1812. It has never endorsed a political candidate. Until now! Please read EVERY word and vote accordingly, thank you!

Dying in a Leadership Vacuum

The final paragraph goes like this…

Anyone else who recklessly squandered lives and money in this way would be suffering legal consequences. Our leaders have largely claimed immunity for their actions. But this election gives us the power to render judgment. Reasonable people will certainly disagree about the many political positions taken by candidates. But truth is neither liberal nor conservative. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent. We should not abet them and enable the deaths of thousands more Americans by allowing them to keep their jobs.

And now for something just so visually pleasing that it became a Top Pick. Just a 52 second clip from a snowball fight. In a street. In Lyon, France. In 1896! Colorized!

Snowball Fight (1896) Louis Lumière AI Colorized DeOldify

Chase Sapphire Preferred 80,000 Points Signup Bonus with $4,000 Spend. I can now refer you to this card, contact me via email travelbloggerbuzz@gmail.com and thank you!

Marriott has come out with a credit card offer that offers 5 free nights for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card. But you must be careful about Marriott’s rules.

We continue to see higher signup bonuses offered by banks as predicted. AMEX is now offering higher bonuses on the Blue Cash Preferred and Blue Cash Everyday cards, in the form of statement credits, $300 and $200 respectively. The Preferred card has an annual fee of $95 which is waived in the first year and has excellent select earning categories while the Everyday version has no annual fee with lower caliber earning categories. I still think the Amex Membership Rewards family of points is of a lower quality than the Chase Ultimate Rewards. I am not going to do pumpy posts trying to speak them up so I sell more, I will leave that to other bloggers out there. But if you find these are right for you please consider getting them from a blog you want to support to keep going, thank you! So, Chase and Amex have been doing their part here, it is time for Citi to start raising their offers next I think, come on!

Looks like hotel companies are doing this again and again. You start to wonder if we don’t get back to normal soon…there would be less and less hotels that survive. Hyatt Extends Benefits to Help Customers – Award Chart Changes Pushed Again, Expirations Moved, and More.

If you have a personal United card with an annual fee and you are not a hardcore United flyer (when flying returns that is) why not downgrade to the no annual fee new United Gateway card which will still get you the better award inventory.

British Airways offers an up to 50% off award sale. We like deals around here. But not during a global pandemic and certainly NOT on flying British Airways airplanes due to ridiculous fees tacked on! And why they are not doing away with those fees yet is even more ridiculous!

TRAVEL

Really good real post by Nomadic Matt on What’s It Like Traveling the US During Covid-19. Sticking to road trips personally, no airplanes the rest of this year. It sucks but it is what it is. I think Matt was one of the first bloggers who got the virus months ago…

Anyone buying? Waldorf Astoria hotel will auction off 80,000 items including pieces from suites used by Edward VIII and Wallace Simpson, Winston Churchill and Cole Porter in a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ event.

Never heard of this place, wow! The picturesque ghost town at the edge of the world. Once a booming mining town in the early 20th Century, now the remnants of Kennecott remain surprisingly preserved, perched on the mountains of the Alaskan wilderness. Only around 200 people still live in and around the area, embracing the isolation of one of the most remote ghost towns in the world. Other “successful” bloggers out there keep linking to stupid clickbait shit. I prefer to find truly eclectic shit for  you and nobody links to me. It sucks and you are welcome.

Cool photos: Brooklyn in Kodachrome – 1970s New York City In Color.

As we are all doing more road trips I thought this is a cool link. 10 of the most unique tunnels around the world.

Best road trip on the planet, seriously? Scotland’s answer to route 66… 500 miles of non-stop scenery through the breathtaking Highlands!

Wow, New York City from above.

Well, we visited cold Alaska above. Why don’t we get to an even colder place? Siberia baby! Glimpses of the Isolated Communities Along a Remote Siberian River. I wonder if they have high speed internet…

COVID-19

You know there has been a persistent theme in my blog when Covid-19 broke out and I focused on it that the US response has been absolutely disastrous. If you watch this you will realize why. At some point some will have to face reality and retire magical thinking! How America Bungled the Plague.

Loved this article dealing with pandemic monitoring, insurance, reinsurance and stuff like that. We Can Protect the Economy From Pandemics. Why Didn’t We? A virologist helped crack an impossible problem: how to insure against the economic fallout from devastating viral outbreaks. The plan was ingenious. Yet we’re still in this mess. The product was there in 2019 but nobody bought it…then after Covid-19 hit everyone wanted it…human nature.

There was a lot of buzz last week about The Atlantic article pointing to an overlooked variable in this pandemic. Frankly, it was way too technical and over my head. Kottke.org has a very good summary and preview of it here: “This Overlooked Variable Is the Key to the Pandemic”. Last link leads to the actual article if you are inclined to read the whole thing.

Fantastic AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread at reddit: We are COVID-19 vaccine researchers, Anna and Paul. After successful trials in mice, we’ve been carrying out the first human trials of a brand-new type of vaccine with the potential to protect a significant proportion of the world’s population. Ask us anything!

The latest article by Michael Lewis. Read it and weep cry, sounds like Florida but it is not, so sad! Inside a California Covid Revolt. Residents of Shasta County have taken resistance to Covid-19 restrictions to another level: “full-on anarchy.” I am still crying…

It just saddens and angers me that we managed to politicize a public health issue…like masks, WTF! Months Into the Pandemic, 16 States Don’t Mandate Mask Use. Why?

I really enjoyed this interview: Germany Has Its Own Dr. Fauci—and Actually Follows His Advice. If we only did not have so many freedom fighters here fighting for their right not to suffocate wearing a simple mask smh.

Really good explanation: Charting a Coronavirus Infection.

And now for something different, getting away from the medical angles to focus on the economic angles. Most specifically, The productivity pitfalls of working from home in the age of COVID-19. Nicholas Bloom is widely known for his research showing the benefits of working from home. But in the current coronavirus crisis, the economist fears productivity will plummet. Let’s all hope he is wrong!

We are still learning more about the virus. It appears we are into the second wave everywhere. Vaccine trials are proceeding well, as well as therapeutics. Dr. Fauci has predicted we go back into some kind of normal at the end of 2021 which I think it is the best guess right now. Get accustomed to wearing masks and avoiding closed spaces for a while everyone. Both son and wife can now work from home until end of June 2021. Our life is changing due to the virus. If only we had an effective response dealing with it from the start here in the US…

Never Forget!

PERSONAL FINANCE

I have been thinking a lot lately about this but this guy managed to write them all down in a single blog post: The 7 Things That Matter For Markets Going Forward. And I agree 100% with this statement: “One thing I am sure about is there are no easy answers to low bond yields for investors. This is the hardest investing environment ever when it comes to wealth preservation.”

This is a decent roundup and comparison of the companies offering Health Savings Accounts HSAs.

I try to help people in my blog. By educating them. And warning them about scum scammers. Like this guy, wow! Heartbreaker. To women in search of love, Shaun Rootenberg seemed like a catch. What they didn’t know: he’d spent decades stealing from just about anyone who crossed his path. Lonely women on dating sites were only his latest prey. He is still out there in Toronto roaming free smh.

CURRENT EVENTS/POLITICS

I watched the debate. You know we have entered some magical parallel reality when the fly won the Vice President debate this week.

With both guys running for President, one 74 with Covid-19 and obese and the other 78 years old, we are all wondering: What happens to the U.S. presidential election if a candidate dies or becomes incapacitated?. It can get really confusing, here is another article on this topic: What if Trump Can’t Run? Many Steps Are Clear, but Some Are Not.

We have no words left…Trump and his staff’s refusal to wear a face mask is a catastrophe. A face mask might have protected Trump, his staff, and the people around them from the coronavirus.

Okay, one more left and then I plan to move on…I think. Donald Trump Failed to Protect America, and Himself.

Prepare yourselves for far out stuff to happen after the election. The Attack on Voting in the 2020 Elections. If you noticed, even Pence refused to guarantee a safe transition. PREPARE!

VP Debate recap.

ODDZ & ENDZ

Ok, this is a fun link: The 25 Most Expensive Things Ever Sold on eBay. Made me dream about one of you buying such an expensive item with my Amazon link lol.

I was really surprised how widespread this type of stealing is. I guess it makes sense. The Pirates of the Highways. On America’s interstates, brazen bands of thieves steal 18-wheelers filled with computers, cell phones, even toilet paper. And select law enforcement teams are tasked with tracking them down.

The graveyard of products killed by Google just keeps growing! Killed by Google.

Well, after pirates and graveyards above, let’s keep the doom theme with: Here Are 26 Of The Most Horrifying Serial Killers To Ever Walk This Earth.

This is so cool. FICTIONAL STARSHIPS Size COMPARISON. In 3D.

In case you want to escape after November 3, this guy gives us lots of ideas! Survival Shelter Ideas.

Do you have lots of cassette tapes stored somewhere like I do? You thought they long ago went extinct, right? Well, NO! I really enjoyed watching this: Throwback on a Comeback: The Last Cassette Tape Factory.

Let’s get back to some amazing photography, shall we? Winners Of The Close-Up Photography Of The Year 2020 Competition. I had a really tough time picking just one photo to feature here!

BLOG BUZZ

We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.

I finally got to this section very late Thursday night. I think I have enough above so please cut me some slack for cutting this a bit short okay? It’s not like I am getting rich from blogging, sad!

Looks like Shawn is making this reselling thing work and keeps Miles to Memories going which provides a nice variety of content. Reselling During the Pandemic: Huge Challenges & Opportunities, But Perspective Helps Too.

I am slowly getting back to running, hitting 20 miles this week and last but…very slow. I have until October 31st to do the virtual Detroit Half Marathon . I deferred my 2020 Athens Marathon entry to next year.

Movie theaters are opening today in Michigan. I missed going to the movies but…it may be a while before I return. I hope they are still there. So tough to be in some industries!

Will corona totally kill all first class seats? Not yet but if the present pandemic lasts more months (which it likely will) I don’t think they will. And then how bloggers will sell more plastic doing trip reports how they travel for free sleeping in first class seats if you could only get several credit cards with their affiliate links. I am surprised we have not seen more blogs quitting…

One more on the VP Debate you guys!

For one night the name of my indoor soccer team was trending on Twitter!

And I leave you with this…

This one for you Rams 😉

I have moved the COVID-19 Section further down starting with this post. There is a LOT in this post. This is my baby, going strong for almost 8 years! You all enjoy the weekend and thanks for spending some of it reading my blog. If you are not into the frequent flyer miles/points game please feel free to skip the Miles & Points section.

TOP PICKS

I am starting a new blog section titled TOP PICKS. For readers who have been here for a while it is similar to the “Best of Web” posts I used to do. Simply I pick some content that deserves special mention in these now weekly curated blog posts I do. As I think everything I post here is a must read, think of these in this section as the MUST must reads! 🙂

Old friend Mile Nerd gives advice to graduating young men as they enter adulthood next year. Adulting 101. You will enjoy reading these and you will realize why it is here as a top pick. Just a few of my favorites:

Do you really want to be the guy who makes people wait for you to back into a parking space?

Make 2 lists:
First, write down the names of anyone you could depend on in a jam.
Next, list the people 100% willing to talk to you about anything at all.
If any names show up on both lists…that’s who matters most.

For the love of God, learn the difference between “your” and “you’re.”

No ribs on a first date. Or spaghetti.

Your career is important. But it shouldn’t cost you your mental health.

When you consider doing something that crosses the line, take a second and remember what a courtroom is. Ask yourself the following question:
“Do I really want to put my life in the hands of 12 people who were too dumb to get out of jury duty?”

I have been around the web ever since I fired the Netscape browser in the last century. And I had never heard of the Improbable Research website! Its tagline is “Research that makes people LAUGH and then THINK“. I found it very appropriate for my blog’s mission! Every year they have a contest titled the Ig Nobel Awards and here are the 2020 winners. These are awesome in their own improbable way (get it?) and my favorite was this to get a taste of what you are about to see, enjoy!

ECONOMICS PRIZE [UK, POLAND, FRANCE, BRAZIL, CHILE, COLOMBIA, AUSTRALIA, ITALY, NORWAY, ITALY]
Christopher Watkins, Juan David Leongómez, Jeanne Bovet, Agnieszka Å»elaźniewicz, Max Korbmacher, Marco Antônio Corrêa Varella, Ana Maria Fernandez, Danielle Wagstaff, and Samuela Bolgan, for trying to quantify the relationship between different countries’ national income inequality and the average amount of mouth-to-mouth kissing.

Which one is your favorite? 🙂

Well, it belongs here as Trump’s tax records finally came out: Long-Concealed Records Show Trump’s Chronic Losses and Years of Tax Avoidance.

I am not sure how I found this story from 2005. About some dude in rural Ukraine who had a brain surgery as a kid, something went wrong and then just kept growing and growing. Great writing and, well, I found it good enough to add to the Top Picks this week, enjoy! XXXXL.

Leonid S. is eight and a half feet tall, and he is still growing. He is 34 years old, weighs 480 pounds, and he is still growing. He can’t fit in a car, wears size 26 EEEEE shoes, can pick apples eleven feet off the ground standing flat-footed, and yes, he is still growing. Michael Paterniti journeyed 9,000 miles to a tiny village in the Ukraine to learn from the world’s tallest man.

The higher signup bonuses from the banks keep coming. We now have the IHG Rewards Club Premier offering 140,000 points and even the no annual fee IHG Traveler credit card offers 100,000 points! I think these are indeed the highest offers for these cards. You could stay in Holiday Inns for several nights for free and not even pay an annual fee, thanks US banks!

Post corona our world is so different. And banks try to hang on to their customers by making it easier to burn some of the accumulated points as not many are even thinking about travel these days. Chase Expands ‘Pay Yourself Back’ To Ink Cards & Extends Until April 30, 2021. Certainly a welcome move.

Hilton Honors still has hotel awards that cost just 5,000 and 10,000 Hilton Honors points. Not that many but still…I could be doing numerous pump posts screaming at you to get the Amex Hilton cards so you can stay for up to 30 nights for freeeeee but I am not that kind of blogger and I guess that is why my blog credit card conversions suck 🙂

TRAVEL

Well, what can I tell you? You come here for unique content. Like this one about, please contain your enthusiasm, Ukrainian Railroad Ladies. For some strange reason, today’s post is taking a Ukranian turn you guys…

A stunning 3.50 minutes film “Devil’s Gold”. Roughly 300 miners a day climb two miles up the Kawah Ijen mountain and then descend more than 900 yards in their search for “devil’s gold.” This is one miner’s story of hard work, courage, and suffering all in the name of family.

I love this link in German. It shows pictures of Berlin side by side that you can then extend out. I was in Berlin (both sides) back in 1987 and it still remains one of my most important travel experiences that had a huge impact in my life. Maybe one day I dig out some of those paper photos and scan them…

Remember Mobutu Sese Seko? If not, a little history for you. He was the dictator of the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly called Zaire) who ruled for more than 30 years expertly playing off the two super powers to help him…take corruption to unprecedented levels, even for African dictator standards! And then he built Gbadolite: The Versailles of The Jungle. Amazingly how it rots these days…

Since we are again avoiding destinations like the Maldives which travel bloggers bank sales representatives use to sell credit cards to unsuspecting masses, why don’t we visit virtually more fascinating places like Gbadolite above or, please sit down, an empty village: Inside “Peace Village,” The Ghost Town On The Border of North and South Korea.

COVID-19

Sure hope so! Here’s How the Pandemic Finally Ends. A vaccine by early 2021, a steady decline in cases by next fall and back to normal in a few years—11 top experts look into the future.

A must listen! How Will COVID-19 End? with Ed Yong at the In The Bubble podcast with Andy Slavitt. The whole transcript is there as well. I am the reading type 😉

We all knew that but reading this it kind of scared me: Vaccine Chaos Is Looming.

What if the Chinese get there first? Or the Russians? Oh, talking about the Russians: Russia’s Sputnik Vaccine Stunt Could Cast a Long Shadow. The Russian government is exploiting a scientific win for propaganda purposes. The potential consequences are troubling. “Troubling” may be the second best understatement of the year. What is first you ask? That Donald Trump pays his fair of share in taxes, bwahahahahaha!

I guess we could not have prepared for the pandemic like South Korea so let’s compare to Vietnam: Vietnam vs COVID-19: Round 2. 1,094 cases and 35 deaths. IN TOTAL TO DATE! This is just an average day in Florida, sad!

What a sad milestone and such tragic photos: A Look at Virus’s Impact as Deaths Near 1 Million.

PERSONAL FINANCE

I like the first line of this “Seems So Easy” article: “Managing Money is ridiculously simple—and unbelievably hard.” Right on! Everything listed is so common sense and looks so easy. Yet, the vast majority of people are basket cases when it comes to their money management. I think #7 “Keep It Simple” is very important. Sadly, I see this constantly out there: Instead, it seems investors are drawn to complicated strategies because of their complexity. They like the sense they’re doing something “special” and they wrongly assume such “sophistication” is the key to better returns.

I like helping people, it is in my nature I guess. And warn you about dangerous stuff. Like some ridiculous bros in FinTok, as in financial Tik Tok: Welcome to FinTok, Where Day Trading, Options Investing, and Misinformation Reign. STAY THE PHUCK AWAY!!!

CURRENT EVENTS/POLITICS

I watched the debate. It was a shitshow and I hope they do not have another one. If you are still undecided, what is wrong with you? Here is the transcript of the debate.

I have been on record, never wavered, that this Trump guy is mentally unstable, totally unfit for this office and very dangerous to the well being of us all and the whole planet actually. And he never amazes me how he can reach yet another low, wow! I mean, when you run on Law and Order and you have an easy task to just condemn white supremacy and violence and you instead do this Asked to Condemn White Supremacy, Trump Stalls and Tells the Proud Boys to “Stand Back and Stand By”…is there any wonder why I am very interested to buy a gun for the first time in my life? Shocking as I am a lover and not a fighter…maybe when you cross middle age that love part takes a step back, sad lol. #GodHelpUsAll

So, instead of crying, let’s laugh, you are reading the TBB blog after all. Best tweet with a gif about the debate!

Here we go: Ten times Trump shamed others on tax. The ridiculousness of it all! And how can you lose so much money running golf courses, depreciation and all, wow! I could do a whole post on this but…let’s move on, shall we?

Oh, God keep helping us please! How QAnon Conspiracy Theories Spread in My Colorado Hometown. I have a feeling years later we will find out that all this Q shit was started and developed from an intelligence operation by Putin himself…oh wait, am I fighting conspiracy non sense with….conspiracy crap? Hope God helps me too!

This shit is spreading faster than the corona virus after it enters a nursing home! QAnon’s Inexorable Spread Beyond the U.S. The bizarre, pro-Trump cult known as QAnon has been gaining followers in the United States for months. Now, the conspiracy theory has begun spreading to Germany. It’s followers believe that the coronavirus is a weapon of the elite in their quest to enslave the world.

ODDZ & ENDZ

I remember reading about this many years ago, wow! The 1925 Serum Run To Nome: The Incredible Story of How a Remote Alaskan Town Was Saved From an Epidemic.

Remember when you heard of a nice married woman who was volunteering in prisons and helped a man sentenced to life escape because she fell in love with him? Yeah, I remember shaking my head wondering how stupid can people get and ruin their lives. This is a fantastic story along with an interview of her: The True Story of the Married Woman Who Smuggled Her Boyfriend Out of Prison in a Dog Crate. On a second thought, maybe this deserved to be a Top Pick instead of the Ukrainian giant dude…

If you are very pro environment and all green and stuff like that, you will soon be able to be buried in the first ever eco-friendly fungi mycelium casket. Lay dead and…feed the earth with your very own nutrients and become a valuable source for new life. I think I will spare you the shocking video ok? 🙂

One of the most enjoyable reads this week was this: The weird world of kidnapping insurance. Fascinating insights about how they all operate in this “industry”.

Reading this article made me very sad. There should be no mercy to people who do this! Stolen lives: The harrowing story of two girls sold into sexual slavery.

No photos yet in this post, how sad. Let’s change that, here are the Best Drone Photos of 2020.

BLOG BUZZ

We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.

I have updated some of the blogs listed in my now infamous lists: Blogs I Like and Blogs To Ignore. One notable addition is Miles to Memories who continue to do things their own way and succeeding and keeping the quality up and not going down in a rampant bank sales representative mode like the blogs in the Ignore list. And with so few blogs in this space now I had to add one more.

I also updated the Travel recommendations with the sites I use for travel hacking, general travel sites and a few miscellaneous ones. Additions are Amusing Planet, Cranky Flier and The Atlantic.

Been busy, I also updated my Personal Finance recommendations. I added Investor Amnesia.

I had several readers who did not like my turn to anti Trump material here and they let me know. I guess this guy wrote the response for me to you disappointed reader.

A travel blogger quit and I am surprised we are not seeing more yet: I’m quitting travel blogging.

Posts that make me barf. By the king of clickbait View From The Wing who only posts this crap because…you click on them, SAD!

Woman Climbs On Seats, Pounds The Overhead Bins Screaming About Her Evening Plans

Woman Jumps American Airlines Counter When She’s Not Allowed To Board Without Shoes

I wonder who the ghost writer is who writes these posts for the top two bloggers in Boarding Area and posts them almost at the same time…not even trying to hide it anymore. You can rest assured this blog is being produced by the guy who goes by TBB…whose blog can not afford to even hire an intern lol.

I am out with the CNB card, I cashed out with eight $100 Amazon gift cards. CNB bank sent them to me via UPS in about four days, very fast! I will be canceling the card shortly, adios #anotheronebitesthedust

I have started running again. More like jogging. If you are over 50 years old, recovery is so darn slow!

And I leave you with this…
