Unexpected Reasons When You Must Find Lawyer On Your Trip

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Unexpected Reasons When You Must Find Lawyer On Your Trip

Traveling can often be a path to relaxation, adventure, or even self-discovery. Yet, amidst the excitement and joy, unexpected situations that may require legal intervention can arise. You might wonder, “Why would I need a lawyer on my trip?” It’s a fair question, and the answer is far from obvious.

This piece aims to shed light on some unforeseen circumstances during travel when having a legal expert by your side could be a lifesaver, highlighting the importance of being prepared for all the twists and turns the road may throw.

Unexpected Reasons When You Must Find Lawyer On Your Trip
In this article we look at some unforeseen circumstances during travel when having a legal expert by your side could be a lifesaver

1. Injury or Accident Abroad

Getting injured or involved in an accident abroad is a scenario no one envisions, yet it happens more frequently than you might think. Whether it’s a slip on a cobblestone street in Rome or a car accident in Bangkok, the aftermath can be daunting, especially when you’re away from home. Navigating foreign healthcare systems, dealing with insurance claims, and understanding local laws can be challenging and stressful, particularly if there’s a language barrier.

In such situations, having the right legal aid can be crucial. Suppose you were on a road trip in the United States and encountered an accident in Nevada; an experienced personal injury attorney in Las Vegas would be invaluable. Familiar with local laws and procedures, they can effectively guide you through the process, help you understand your rights, negotiate with insurance companies, and even represent you in court, if necessary. Such specialized legal assistance can ease the stress of dealing with an accident in a foreign land and ensure you receive the appropriate compensation for your suffering.

2. Legal Troubles

Even the most well-behaved travelers can be tangled in legal troubles abroad. These could stem from unintentional violations of unfamiliar local laws or customs to more serious allegations like theft or assault. For instance, you might unknowingly purchase an item deemed illegal in that country or get involved in a heated argument that escalates into a physical confrontation.

A local lawyer can provide much-needed guidance in these scenarios. They can help clarify the local laws, advise on your rights, provide representation during questioning or court proceedings, and negotiate settlements where needed. By having a legal expert on your side, you can navigate the legal quagmire with increased confidence and decrease the chances of a minor infraction becoming a major, life-altering predicament.

3. Lost Documents or Passport

Losing travel documents or passports abroad can be a nerve-wracking experience, plunging your trip into chaos. Whether it’s a pickpocket in a crowded market or simply misplacing your documents, the fear of being stranded in a foreign land is real. Typically, you’d have to contact your home country’s embassy or consulate for assistance, but the process can be complex and lengthy, involving police reports, identity verification, and lots of paperwork.

Losing travel documents or passports abroad can be a nerve-wracking experience, plunging your trip into chaos. In such cases, having a lawyer can be a tremendous aid.

In such cases, having a lawyer can be a tremendous aid. They can help expedite the process, ensure all legal documentation is correctly filled out and submitted, and liaise with the embassy on your behalf. Furthermore, if theft is involved, they can help you navigate the local police system, ensuring your case is handled appropriately. Losing your passport is not a harrowing ordeal; with the right legal expertise, you can turn a trip-ruining circumstance into a minor bump on the road.

4. Personal or Family Emergencies

Unfortunately, personal or family emergencies can happen anytime, even on vacation. These emergencies could range from severe health conditions needing immediate medical attention to unforeseen financial crises. In such instances, the complexity of navigating foreign systems coupled with the stress of the emergency can become overwhelming.

Acquiring the services of a lawyer in such scenarios can be immensely helpful. They can guide the best course of action, help deal with health insurance providers, and even liaise with financial institutions if needed. In more sensitive situations like child custody or separation issues that may arise while you’re away, a lawyer can provide the required advice and support, ensuring that your interests are well represented even when you’re miles away from home.

5. Unexpected Changes in Travel Plans

Unexpected modifications in travel plans can also necessitate legal assistance, particularly when it involves cancellation of hotel bookings, flight delays, or unexpected termination of tour packages. These sudden changes can lead to financial losses and disagreements with travel agencies or accommodation providers. In such situations, a lawyer can offer valuable assistance in understanding your rights as a consumer and pursuing the necessary legal recourse.

For example, if your flight to the European Union gets canceled without adequate notice or you’re denied boarding due to overbooking, under EU law, you may be entitled to compensation. An experienced lawyer can help you understand the terms of such regulations, guide you through the claim process, and help you recover your losses. Thus, even when travel plans don’t go as smoothly as expected, having legal counsel can ensure your rights and interests are protected.

6. Property Damage or Theft

While on travel, you might face situations where your personal belongings or rented property, like a car or a holiday home, is damaged or stolen. These situations can be highly stressful and financially draining, especially if you’re held liable for damages to the rented property or if the stolen items were high-value. It becomes even more complex when claiming insurance crosses international borders.

In these cases, a lawyer can be your best advocate. They can advise you on the local laws regarding liability, help you communicate effectively with the property owners or insurance companies, and assist in filing police reports or insurance claims. If you are falsely accused of causing damage, a legal expert can provide the necessary defense and help you challenge such allegations. Professional legal guidance can distinguish between a quick resolution and a prolonged, costly ordeal.

While we all hope for smooth and trouble-free travels, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks and challenges that may arise along the way. A lawyer can provide valuable assistance in times of need, ensuring you’re equipped with the legal expertise to navigate any unforeseen circumstances during your trip. Before setting off on your next adventure, research and consider contacting a local legal representative for peace of mind and added protection while traveling. Remember, it’s always better to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

Your guide to maximizing shopping portals for your online purchases

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

The next big gift-giving occasions, such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and graduations, are on the horizon. If you’re struggling to find the perfect gift for your loved ones, online shopping portals may be a great solution. Online shopping portals offer an easy way to earn bonus miles or cash back on purchases.

Also, Rakuten offers a one-time $30 bonus for new members who join through this link (and spend $30 within 90 days), so using an online shopping portal can help you save by earning cash back and accumulating points and miles.

In this guide, we’ll explore some of the top online shopping portals and how you can maximize your rewards when shopping.

Basics of online shopping portals

Let’s start with a quick overview of what these portals do. At the most basic level, shopping portals allow you to earn bonus points, miles or cash back at hundreds of online retailers.

All you need to do is log in to your online shopping portal of choice. Then, click the store where you want to shop, and you will be redirected to the store’s website and can shop as normal.

You’re still purchasing the same items directly from the merchant, but because you started at the shopping portal, you’ll earn bonus points. However, this generally only applies to the subtotal of your purchase (excluding taxes and shipping fees).

In addition, you’ll still earn points or miles on the actual rewards credit card you use, making this an easy way to double dip.

Related: The best travel rewards credit cards

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Here’s an example. Let’s say you planned on buying a Mother’s Day gift from Macy’s for Grandma.

That item costs $100 if you purchase it directly from macys.com (plus $20 in taxes and shipping). Since you want to maximize your purchase, you plan to use your Citi Double Cash® Card (see rates and fees) to take advantage of the 2% cash back it offers on purchases (1% when you buy and 1% when you pay your bill).

However, you also notice that Rakuten offers an additional 2% back at Macy’s. You begin there and click through to macys.com to complete the purchase.

Thus, you’ll earn the following:

$120 x 2% cash back on the Citi Double Cash = $2.40$100 x 2% cash back through the portal = $2

If you shopped directly on macys.com, you would’ve missed out on the extra $2 you got through Rakuten — and you’re still getting the same item for the same price.

How is this possible?

You might wonder how these portals can do this. After all, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. However, there’s no catch here. In exchange for directing you to a specified merchant, the portal will take a cut of any purchase you make from the retailer, giving you points or miles as a reward. It’s a win-win-win situation for all involved; the merchant gets more business, the portal generates more revenue, and you get extra rewards.

You may think that an extra $5 here or 300 points there won’t make much of a difference. However, if you consistently utilize shopping portals, you can easily rack up a significant amount of points, miles or cash back in a year. The beauty of this process is that you’re earning additional bonuses for things you would’ve bought anyway — an especially savvy move to address some of the cost increases we’ve been seeing.

Types of online shopping portals

United Airlines plane at gate
DARREN MURPH/THE POINTS GUY

Now that you know how it works, let’s take a look at the major types of shopping portals out there. You can generally group them into three categories:

Airline and hotel loyalty programsCredit cardsCash back

However, a change to one popular portal in 2019 created another category that effectively combines the three.

Let’s dive into each one to get a flavor of the possibilities.

irline and hotel loyalty programs

United MileagePlus Shopping Portal homepage
SHOPPING.MILEAGEPLUS.COM

Almost every major airline has an online shopping portal (as do select hotel programs), and they work similarly. While the exact login process may vary slightly, each one will award bonus points or miles based on your purchases across hundreds of retailers. Here’s a handy list of links for the most popular airlines:

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Shopping: Earn bonus miles at over 1,100 stores.American Airlines AAdvantage eShopping: Earn bonus miles at over 1,200 partner stores.British Airways Executive Club eStore: Earn bonus Avios with over 1,000 retailers.Delta Air Lines SkyMiles Shopping: Earn bonus miles at over 1,000 stores.JetBlue Airways TrueBlue Shopping: Earn bonus points with hundreds of partner retailers, and shop in flight for bonus points at Amazon.Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Shopping: Earn bonus points at more than 1,100 online stores.United Airlines MileagePlus Shopping: Earn bonus miles at over 1,100 stores.

In addition to the standard earning rates these sites offer, many will frequently offer bonuses as an added incentive. In many cases, these aren’t based on purchases at a single store but cover transactions across all participating merchants over a set period.

For example, bonuses may launch around the winter holidays, and others can pop up around back-to-school time. Be sure to bookmark our permanent page for these offers.

Finally, some portals will even allow you to link your credit card and earn additional points and miles for in-store shopping — like this set of retailers through United’s site.

Credit cards

Some issuers currently offer their own online shopping portals where you can stack your credit card earnings. They are:

Capital One Shopping (only cash back, not bonus miles)Barclays RewardsBoostChase Ultimate Rewards ShoppingCiti Shop

To utilize any of these portals, you must have an active credit card account that earns points in the bank’s program.

In 2024, Citi entered the credit card issuers’ shopping portal space. Launched as a web browser extension, Citi Shop automatically scans for coupons and other offers at over 5,000 online merchants. These offers include coupons and statement credits.

You’re only able to use the shopping portal if you have an eligible U.S. Citi card. Users can find a list of participating cards when they go to enroll in the Citi Shop program. You can download the Citi Shop extension in your browser’s app store.

Also, Chase allows 1:1 transfers to more than a dozen travel partners. You could effectively earn Hyatt points, United miles or British Airways Avios by logging in to your Chase account and launching the Ultimate Rewards shopping portal.

Although American Express doesn’t have its own shopping portal, there is a way to earn bonus Amex points when shopping online (more on that in a bit).

Cash back

The final category of online shopping portals consists of those offering extra cash back on your purchases. This is a great option for anyone who doesn’t want to bother with the hassle of airline miles or credit card points. In some instances, you can even earn bonuses for booking hotel reservations through these sites.

That being said, going for cash back also adds complexity, as there are over a dozen competing sites out there.

Some of my favorites include:

Mr. RebatesExtrabuxTop Cashback

Most rates tend to fall in the 1%-5% range, though you could find limited-time specials at select merchants or during certain time windows.

Hybrid option

One of the best sites — and the one that TPG staffers use most frequently — is Rakuten. This portal traditionally fell squarely into the realm of cash-back earnings.

However, in February 2019, it started allowing new members to opt for American Express Membership Rewards points, an option that expanded to everyone in October 2019. You can earn Amex points at a ratio of $0.01 to 1 Membership Rewards point, so a merchant offering 1% cash back would instead result in 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar spent.

If you agree with TPG’s most recent valuations — which peg Amex points at 2 cents apiece — opting for Membership Rewards points over cash back effectively doubles your return with Rakuten. Since the site works with over 3,500 stores, it’s among the most expansive online shopping portals. It also has a browser extension that will notify you when a merchant offers a bonus, and it also has in-store offers.

If you’re not a member, you can sign up for Rakuten and earn $30 when you make at least $30 worth of eligible purchases through the portal in your first 90 days (limited-time offer subject to change).

How do I find the best offer?

As you can see, this is a dizzying array of options, and if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to quickly sort through them for your next online shopping spree.

Let’s say you’re ready to make a purchase at a specific retailer, but you don’t know which shopping portal to use. You have accounts with virtually every program above, but does that mean you need to manually load each portal to see what bonus you’d earn?

Thanks to the magic of shopping portal aggregators like Cashback Monitor, you don’t. If you’ve never used it, you should bookmark it for future reference.

In essence, the shopping portal aggregator allows you to pull up a specific retailer and see the earning rate you’d get across all applicable shopping portals. This includes all of the above portals, allowing you to quickly compare earning rates and determine which portal offers the best return for the individual merchant at which you are shopping.

Nike cashback monitor
CASHBACKMONITOR.COM

The site is great for pulling up a specific store and has advanced features if you create an account. This allows you to set your favorite portals and even allows you to set a specific value for each loyalty currency.

The default on the site is 1 cent per point or mile, but if you add the numbers from TPG’s most recent valuations (for example), the site will automatically update the return you’d get on your purchases — as you see in the above screenshot.

Important tips and reminders

Person making an online purchase
YULIA GRIGORYEVA/SHUTTERSTOCK

Accessing online shopping portals is relatively straightforward, but there are a few essential things to keep in mind:

You must click through the link on the portal’s site and then purchase from the page that pops up. Don’t navigate away and return later; you may miss the bonus. You must ensure you have cookies enabled in your browser for the retailer’s site. This allows the portal to “track” your purchases and award bonuses accordingly.Only use promotions or promo codes found on the portal; if you use others, the purchase may become ineligible for bonus points or miles.Read the restrictions for each merchant. Many won’t count gift cards as eligible bonus purchases; others exclude specific products.Use a credit card with the best earning rate on your purchase. Most of these merchants don’t fall into the traditional bonus categories, so you’ll probably want to stick with a good card for everyday purchases.

That said, you should be able to stack most Amex Offers, Chase Offers, Citi Merchant Offers and bonuses from American’s SimplyMiles site with rewards through online shopping portals. The vast majority of these offers are based solely on the total amount of your purchase and don’t require any coupon code, so it shouldn’t create any issues.

Aside from the bonuses, shopping portals are an excellent option for keeping loyalty accounts active since spending even a single dollar through a shopping portal can be enough to keep your points and miles from expiring. That can be a lifesaver if you haven’t banked travel to your account in a while and don’t have a viable option to transfer points from elsewhere.

Bottom line

Online shopping portals are a fantastic way to earn bonus points, miles or cash back for online purchases at various merchants. Even if you’re only earning an extra mile or two for every dollar you spend, these earnings can quickly add up and go a long way toward redemptions like first-class flights, luxury hotel rooms or even spending money for your next trip.

Generally speaking, we recommend Rakuten as one of the best options, thanks to the flexibility of Amex points and the sheer number of merchants on the site, but explore all of the above options to determine which would work best for you.

Now is a great time to start if you haven’t utilized these portals. Hopefully, this post has guided you on exactly how to do this.

Mastering the Art: Discovering Prime Fishing Spots

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Mastering the Art: Discovering Prime Fishing Spots
Navigating the Waters to Find the Perfect Fishing Spots
Perfect Fishing Spots Revealed

Become a Fishing Pro: A Guide to Finding the Best Spots

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just getting started, locating prime fishing spots is key to a successful catch.

With so many factors to consider from weather and marine conditions to local regulations, finding areas where fish consistently bite can be hit or miss for amateur fishermen.

This guide breaks down the essential knowledge and techniques you’ll need to track down the perfect locations like a pro.

When searching for top fishing holes, an app for fishing puts valuable data and insight right in your palm, no matter if you are offshore or wading a quiet stream.

Modern fishing apps aggregate up-to-date information on timing, locations, and conditions catered to your target species so you can eliminate guesswork.

As we’ll explore here, these apps for fishing combined with environmental awareness, talking to locals, and scouting trips culminate in fishing success when regulations are followed.

Understanding the Environment That Attracts Fish

Learning to “read the water” starts with understanding fish behavior and needs that drive them to specific areas at certain times.

Once aware of these attractants, they serve as clues to pinpoint where to cast your line.

Seasonal patterns affecting fish location revolve around factors like water temperature, availability of baitfish, protective cover from predators, and currents that deliver food sources.

As conditions change based on weather and marine life cycles, fish move to spots that meet their needs.

Advanced fishing apps track many of these elements, giving you insights like:

Water temperature gradients conducive to gamefishUpwellings that pull nutrient-rich water to surface feeding groundsPrime spawning habitat based on bottom contourWind and wave conditions affecting spot accessibility

With this level of knowledge, you can begin eliminating areas that won’t hold fish at a given time.

Utilize Technology and Gear to Search Efficiently

Your smartphone, loaded with an informative app for fishing is an incredibly valuable technology for researching potential hotspots and managing data.

But mobile apps are just one of many modern tools available to make your search easier.

Sonar-based fish finders built into boats or mounted portably provide views below the surface to locate structures, baitfish schools, or passive fish.

Waterproof handhelds take temperature and GPS readings, which is helpful when shorecasting or wading creeks. Gear-like underwater cameras can literally show live fish presence and behavior, too.

Use technology pre-trip to survey maps, depth contours, and bottom content.

Check real-time radar weather when heading out. And deploy your fish-finding instruments to finalize precision locations.

The more information you gather, process, and apply, the quicker your **search** pays off.

Scouting Trips – Exploring Firsthand

As beneficial as technology is, nothing beats firsthand, on-site reconnaissance of area **fishing spots** when traveling to new locations.

Scouting lets you personally experience factors like underwater terrain, accessibility, boat ramp/dock options, and signs of gamefish presence.

During scouting trips:

Walk/boat an area, taking notes on your observations Inspect conditions at various times of day Talk with other fishermen on the sceneIf permitted, do quick test casts to gauge action

Use all senses while scouting and let curiosity guide you rather than fixed expectations.

Sometimes, out-of-the-way pockets or community pier ends produce incredible catches missed by weekend warriors who are focused only on popular ledges.

Engage Local Experts – Others Have What You Seek

No one knows regional fishing holes better than guides, bait shops, and fellow sportsmen native to the area.

They collectively have decades of on-water experience to share if politely approached. But their wisdom must be earned through relationships, not demands.

Cultivate these local relationships by:

Visiting area tackle shops regularly Hiring reputable guides/charters when possibleJoining local fishing associations if availableMaking friends at community piers or cleaning stations

Listen more than speak when engaging locals. Let them offer tidbits organically by demonstrating etiquette and interest in their guidance.

They’ll happily clue you in once mutual trust and respect builds.

Follow Regulations – They Exist to Sustain Fish Stocks

A major pitfall awaiting overzealous fishermen is failing to research and follow area fishing regulations.

Most quality spots have rules in place to prevent the depletion of fish stocks, protect habitats, and give fair access. Ignoring these guidelines can ruin locations.

Before wetting a line, understand governing restrictions like:

License requirementsGear limitations by species/seasonOff-limit zones or marine preserves Size/catch quotas per personClosed fishing periods for sustainability

Both fishing apps and local fishery agencies provide specifics on regional policies to follow.

Leave no question on regulations because stealing fish via dubious methods solves nothing in the long term..

Ethical anglers help safeguard the future of our shared passion.

Here’s research by sciencedirect which gives all the information about the importance of fishing regulations.

Conclusion – Apply the Keys Unlocking Hot Spots

With these well-rounded pointers guiding your process, the tools are in place to consistently locate rewarding fishing sites.

Rely on technology, environmental awareness, local knowledge, and regulations to expose diamonds in the rough beyond those one-hit wonders.

Invest time practicing this composed approach.

Soon, you’ll be the one others seek for how to catch, where to go, and when. That’s the sign you’ve become a true fishing pro in your region.

The 350 all-new cabins coming to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort now have an opening date

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

One of the most exciting new things coming to Disney World in 2024 is the 350 all-new cabins that sleep up to six people at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. And don’t let the words “cabins” or “wilderness” fool you because, based on the renderings, these are some high-end-looking places to lay your head just a short boat ride away from Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

They will also be a part of the Disney Vacation Club, so you can book them not only with cash, but you can also rent DVC points to stay there for potentially even less.

Here’s what we know about the new DVC cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.

Related: These are the 13 most exciting new things coming to Disney World in 2024

An artist’s rendering of the new cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. DISNEY

What are the new DVC cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort?

Disney’s Fort Wilderness is a massive campground (not to be confused with the nearby Disney’s Wilderness Lodge resort hotel) that has space for tent camping, RV camping and also free-standing cabins you can rent.

These 350 brand-new cabins will reuse the footprint of the existing cabins that have been there for years, but will otherwise be entirely new spaces.

Not only will these DVC cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort be new, but for the first time, they will be a part of the Disney Vacation Club, which opens up additional ways to book stays by owning or renting DVC points.

The cabins will sleep up to six people in a queen bed, twin bunk beds in the main bedroom and a pull-down Murphy bed in the living room. There is a full kitchen, your own outdoor patio and a charcoal grill, and some of the cabins are dog-friendly if you want to bring the whole family.

When will the DVC cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort open?

TPG just learned the opening date for the cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort is July 1.

This will be a phased opening, so not every cabin will be available on that date. We also learned that existing Disney Vacation Club members can add on to their membership to buy a membership for these cabins starting Feb. 1 (with the ability to book beginning Feb. 15). Those looking to buy their first DVC membership for this property can do so starting Feb. 27.

Those with memberships at other DVC resorts who are able to book this property with their points can do so beginning April 23. Disney has not yet announced when direct cash bookings will open.

Related: Why I bought a Disney Vacation Club membership

How much will it cost to stay at the cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort?

If you book with DVC points that you own or rent, it will cost at least 15 points per night to book one of the cabins during the lowest season of Sept. 1-30. Rented points are available for a variety of prices based on where you rent from, but it is usually $21 to $23 per point to rent through David’s Vacation Club Rentals, TPG’s point rental partner. That would mean prices start at $315 a night via rented DVC points at $21 per point.

Artist rendering of new cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. DISNEY

Prices go as high as 36 DVC points per night during the weekend near Christmas and New Year’s but hover closer to 20 to 25 points per night during many nights of the year. You can find the full points chart here.

Cash prices direct from Disney are not yet available for these new cabins. However, the existing cabins that will be replaced by these new ones are often rented for $500 and above per night, so I’d expect these to cost at least that amount.

Bottom line

These 350 new cabins are not the only new places to stay coming to Disney World in 2024. A new tower at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is under construction with a late 2024 estimated completion date. That will also be a part of the Disney Vacation Club once completed.

The new cabins are especially exciting as Disney’s Fort Wilderness offers a close-to-it-all location but also an entirely unique type of Disney vacation where you can get around by golf cart, ride horses, take an archery class, visit Cinderella’s ponies and enjoy more space and a slower pace than most of the rest of the Walt Disney World resort.

Cancun Area Expects More Than 1.5M Tourists By The End Of 2023

The Ministry of Tourism announced that by the end of 2023, 25 national airlines, 15 Canadian, 17 European, and 40 American, will be flying to Cancun.

According to estimates by the State Tourism Secretariat, around 1.5 million tourists will arrive in Quintana Roo by the end of 2023.

The agency highlighted that American Airlines will consolidate Cancun as its main international destination during winter, as since December 9 of last year, the airline has launched new nonstop flights from Cincinnati, Nashville, Tennessee, and Pittsburgh.

With these additions, American Airlines will operate 18 flights to Cancun, totaling 40 daily flights from the United States during the peak winter season.

According to Bernardo Cueto Riestra, 7 million airline seats are scheduled in the Mexican Caribbean between December 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, not including the new flights from Tulum Airport. This corresponds to a total of 36,000 flights at the three international airports in the region.

In addition to this, American Airlines has announced that it will operate six flights to Cozumel on peak days. Starting March 28, there will be four daily nonstop flights to the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto Tulum International Airport.

Hoteliers in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres have expressed optimism about the winter season. They expect an economic turnover of 2,000 million dollars and a hotel occupancy rate of more than 85 percent.

With a supply of 54,600 hotel rooms and a cumulative occupancy rate of between 72 and 84 percent, these destinations in the Mexican Caribbean are expecting an upswing starting in the third week of December and possibly extending into January.

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card makes it easy for business owners to track expenses and earn 2% cash back on up to $50,000 in eligible purchases every calendar year. Once you pass that threshold, you’ll earn 1% cash back, automatically credited to your statement, on all eligible purchases. Best of all, enjoy this earning power with no annual fee (see rates and fees). Card Rating*:

*Card Rating is based on the opinion of TPG’s editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

Whether you’re a small-business owner or CFO of a major corporation, having a separate business card makes sense to help track expenses — whether it’s your own or those of employees. If you’re going to carry a business credit card, you may as well earn rewards that you can use down the road.

With no annual fee and a recommended credit score of 670, the American Express Blue Business Cash Card is great for small-business owners on a budget. The simple rewards system, with no rotating categories to track, makes it a great card for everyday business use.

Let’s look at the other benefits the American Express Blue Business Cash Card provides for business owners looking for a simple, straightforward cash-back rewards card.

Blue Business Cash welcome offer

The American Express Blue Business Cash Card is currently offering up to $500 in statement credits. You’ll earn a $250 statement credit after spending $5,000 in purchases on your card in your first six months of card membership. Then,  you’ll earn an additional $250 statement credit after spending an additional $10,000 on eligible purchases  within the first year of card membership.

THE POINTS GUY

This is a more valuable offer than most cash-back or no-annual-fee cards offer, but it does come with a much steeper spending requirement than we typically see. For small businesses that easily spend at least $10,000 in a year, this is a nice cash bonus. However, if you’re spending significantly on a credit card, you might want to choose a business card with a more valuable welcome bonus.

Blue Business Cash benefits

The American Express Blue Business Cash Card is a conventional  card with a unique perk similar to the better-known Amex charge cards. The Expanded Buying Power feature on the card allows you to exceed your spending limit with no over-limit fees or penalties. You can even earn cash-back rewards on purchases that exceed your credit limit. You just have to pay your minimum payment, which would include any purchases charged over your limit. Since TPG always recommends paying your balance in full to avoid interest charges, this shouldn’t be a problem.

A caveat: Exceeding your credit limit could reduce your credit score since your credit utilization ratio factors heavily into your credit score.

Other benefits include secondary car rental loss and damage insurance when you rent a vehicle with your card,* up to one year extended warranty protection on purchases (for manufacturer warranties of five years or less)** and 90 days of purchase protection against theft or damage.**

The card also delivers concierge-level service through the Global Assist feature when you travel more than 100 miles from home.^ Global Assist includes 24/7 emergency assistance and coordination services for medical, legal, or passport referrals. Amex can also help with missing luggage and emergency cash wires. Cardmembers must pay the charges for third-party services.

*Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Not all vehicle types or rentals are covered, and geographic restrictions apply. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Earning rewards on the Blue Business Cash

To earn rewards, simply use your American Express Blue Business Cash Card to make in-store or online purchases or to pay bills. You’ll earn 2% cash back on the first $50,000 in purchases you make each calendar year. After that, you’ll earn 1% back on all purchases.

Those aren’t otherworldly earnings rates, but they’re solid for a business card with no annual fee (see rates and fees). And they’re easy to grasp and remember.

Redeeming rewards on the Blue Business Cash

Your cash back on the Blue Business Cash appears as an automatic monthly statement credit. That way, you’re effectively reducing your business operating expenses thanks to cash-back rewards appearing on your account.

On one hand, some may be disappointed that they don’t have multiple redemption options. On the other, the automatic statement credit ensures that you’ll get the full value of your rewards without making any decisions or remembering to redeem anything.

Which cards compete with the American Express Blue Business Cash Card?

Several business cards can match (or outdo) the Blue Business Cash.

If you want better earning rates: The Ink Business Cash Credit Card from Chase also has no annual fee and offers heftier rewards in certain categories – notably, 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office-supply stores and on internet, phone and cable service each account anniversary year. For more information, read our full review of the Ink Business Cash.If you prefer travel rewards: Take a look at The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express. Like its counterpart, you’ll earn 2 points per dollar on the first $50,000 in purchases in a calendar year; then 1 point per dollar on other purchases. The points are valued at an average of 2 cents each, based on TPG’s valuations, making them double the value of cash. For more information, read our full review of the Blue Business Plus.If you want custom rewards: Big spenders might prefer a more robust card like the American Express® Business Gold Card. It carries a hefty annual fee of $295 a year (see rates and fees), but bigger business owners will like the 4 points per dollar on business-friendly categories where the business spends the most in two select categories each billing cycle, up to the first $150,000 spent in those categories per calendar year (then 1 point per dollar). For more information, read our full review of the Amex Business Gold.

Is the Blue Business Cash worth it?

The American Express Blue Business Cash Card isn’t the most valuable cash-back business card out there — it’s mostly designed to help small-business owners manage and track their spending while earning rewards. But for many small-business owners, the Blue Business Cash will offer simple and easy-to-understand rewards at no cost — and nothing beats getting cash back each month.

Bottom line

Undoubtedly, the American Express Blue Business Cash Card is lacking in several areas. The 2% cash-back rewards are moderate, at best, and can’t compete with some competitors. However, the simplicity of earning and redeeming rewards and the lack of an annual fee may entice small-business owners looking for an easy way to earn rewards on their business expenses.

Cultural Sensitivity and Diversity in Residential Treatment Facilities

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Cultural Sensitivity and Diversity in Residential Treatment Facilities>

Introduction

In our diverse society, acknowledging and respecting cultural differences is crucial, especially in healthcare settings like residential treatment facilities. Cultural sensitivity isn’t just about being politically correct; it’s about providing effective, individualized care that respects each person’s cultural background and identity.

Understanding Cultural Sensitivity

The Importance of Cultural Awareness in Mental Health Treatment, Including Residential Inpatient Treatment

Cultural sensitivity in mental health care, including residential inpatient treatment, refers to understanding and respecting each patient’s cultural background, beliefs, and values. According to the American Psychological Association, considering these factors is essential for effective treatment. This approach recognizes that cultural background can significantly influence how individuals perceive and cope with mental health issues, especially in settings such as residential inpatient treatment where patients are immersed in a therapeutic environment for an extended period.

The Impact of Cultural Insensitivity

A lack of cultural sensitivity can lead to miscommunication, misunderstandings, and even misdiagnosis. For instance, certain behaviors or expressions of distress that are normal in one culture may be misinterpreted in another. This can affect the quality of care and the patient’s comfort and trust in their treatment providers.

Promoting Diversity in Residential Treatment Facilities

Inclusive Policies and Practices

Creating an inclusive environment begins with policies that respect and accommodate diverse cultural needs. This includes language services, consideration of dietary preferences, and respect for different cultural practices and religious beliefs.

Training Staff in Cultural Competence

Staff training is key to fostering cultural sensitivity. It’s important for healthcare providers to understand the nuances of different cultures and to be aware of their own biases. Ongoing training and education in cultural competence can significantly improve patient care.

Challenges and Solutions

Overcoming Language Barriers

Language barriers can be a significant obstacle in treatment. Providing translation services and employing multilingual staff can help overcome this challenge, ensuring clear communication and a deeper understanding of each patient’s needs.

Respecting Religious and Cultural Practices

Treatment facilities must be flexible and respectful of religious and cultural practices. This might involve accommodating dietary restrictions, providing spaces for prayer or meditation, and being sensitive to cultural norms around privacy and modesty.

Case Studies and Statistics

Research Findings

Studies have shown that culturally sensitive treatment leads to better patient outcomes. A report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration highlighted that treatment adherence improves when cultural factors are considered.

Success Stories

There are numerous examples of treatment centers successfully integrating cultural sensitivity into their practices. For instance, a facility in California has developed a program specifically catering to the needs of the Latino community, incorporating cultural traditions and family values into their treatment approach.

Best Practices for Cultural Sensitivity

Personalized Care Plans

Each patient’s treatment plan should be personalized, taking into account their cultural background, language, beliefs, and values. This approach ensures that treatment is not only effective but also respectful and empowering for the patient.

Community and Family Involvement

Involving the patient’s community and family can be beneficial, especially in cultures where family plays a central role in decision-making and support. Family therapy and community outreach programs can enhance the treatment experience and outcomes.

The Future of Cultural Sensitivity in Mental Health Care

Continuous Learning and Adaptation

Cultural sensitivity is an ongoing process. It requires continuous learning and adaptation to meet the evolving needs of a diverse population. Treatment facilities must stay informed about cultural trends and changes to provide relevant and effective care.

Policy and Advocacy

There is a need for advocacy and policy changes to promote cultural sensitivity in all aspects of mental health care. This includes funding for cultural competence training, research on culturally sensitive treatments, and policies that support diversity and inclusion in healthcare.

Conclusion

Cultural sensitivity and diversity in residential treatment facilities are not just ethical imperatives; they are essential components of effective mental health care. By embracing cultural differences and tailoring treatment to meet each individual’s unique needs, these facilities can provide more effective, compassionate, and respectful care. As we continue to grow in our understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, the future of mental health care becomes more inclusive and effective for all.

Childproof your next trip with these must-have baby travel gear items

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information.

As a new parent, traveling with your baby can seem like an insurmountable goal. You want your baby to feel safe and comfortable, but you can’t pack up your entire nursery to do so. Here at TPG, we’ve spent a lot of time traveling with children, and we’ve tested a lot of baby gear along the way.

Related: 43 real-world family travel tips that actually work

We know every trip — and every baby — is different, but these items can keep you and your baby happy whether you travel by plane, train or automobile and, of course, once you reach your destination.

GB Pockit Travel Stroller

Travel stroller
The GB Pockit Travel Stroller. AMAZON

Weighing in at only 10.4 pounds and folding up small enough to fit in most airplane overhead compartments, the GB Pockit was named the world’s most compact stroller by Guinness World Records. This travel-friendly stroller folds up in two easy steps, but don’t let its small size fool you. It still has a weight capacity of up to 55 pounds and can handle a bumpy sidewalk as well as it handles the moving walkway at the airport.

Related: These are the 10 best travel strollers for your next trip

The GB Pockit doesn’t come with all the accessories other strollers come with (which is why it folds up so easily). However, it has a mini sun canopy, an adjustable harness and a small storage space underneath the seat. It is also designed for babies 6 months and older, so parents of newborns will have to wait a bit to use this small but mighty stroller.

To buy: GB Pockit Travel Stroller on Amazon, $193.59

PAK Reve Wilder Bundle

Bags and backpacks on table
The Pak Reve Wilder Bundle. PAK REVE

Even before testing Pak Reve’s line of travel bags, we knew they would stand up to anything parents could throw at them because they were designed by globe-trotting travel writer Jordi Lippe-McGraw. You can buy the full-size backpack, mini backpack, waterproof wristlet and insulated lunchbox separately. However, they all attach together to create one fully functional travel system, so we recommend purchasing the full bundle.

Dubbed The Wilder Bundle, this travel system connects and disconnects with ease. Having the full system on the plane or on a long road trip ensures you have every bottle, snack, change of clothes and toy close by. You can use just the pieces you need when you arrive at your destination. You may only want the mini backpack for a quick excursion, or you can bring along the waterproof wristlet, so you have somewhere to store dirty clothes in case of an accident.

The full-size backpack has tons of organizational features, including a front pocket that converts into a jacket sleeve, theft-proof pockets, a laptop sleeve, a keychain ring and exterior water bottle pockets.

To buy: PAK Reve The Wilder Bundle, $335

Tula Free-to-Grow Baby Carrier

Baby carrier
The Tula Free-to-Grow Baby Carrier. AMAZON

There are dozens of baby carriers out there, and which one works best for you will largely be based on personal preference, but we have found the Tula Free-to-Grow Baby Carrier to be a great go-to carrier.

This carrier can be used for babies from 7 to 45 pounds, making it a great choice for newborns and toddlers alike. The front mesh panel keeps you and your baby cool, and the adjustable straps and waistband ensure a comfortable fit for you and a secure fit for your baby. The padded shoulder straps provide additional comfort, and you can use the carrier in front-carry and back-carry positions.

To buy: Tula Free-to-Grow Baby Carrier on Amazon, $179

Enovoe Portable Diaper Changing Pad

Portable diaper pad
Enovoe Portable Diaper Changing Pad. AMAZON

The Enovoe portable changing pad is ideal for changing your baby on the go anywhere. It’s not too bulky, which means you can easily slip it into a carry-on bag. It also has storage space for a few diapers, a small pack of wipes, an extra pair of pants and a onesie for good measure.

Even though it’s fairly slim, the head area has additional padding for the baby’s comfort, and there’s an attachable strap to hang it from the stroller when you’re on the move. The changer comes in handy when you’re at the beach, on a long road trip, at the park or pretty much anywhere. As an added bonus, it’s unisex and cute.

To buy: The Enovoe portable pad is available on Amazon for $19.99.

Nuby Lightweight High Chair Booster Seat

Baby high chair booster seat
The Nuby Easy Go Booster Seat. AMAZON

Finding vacation rentals with high chairs is ideal, but it’s not always possible. This Nuby travel booster seat attaches to chairs and is fairly portable — and it can be tucked into a checked suitcase. The chair is soft yet sturdy, so little ones don’t mind eating in it.

The straps are durable and fairly secure. Just remember, the chair is only for short periods while your baby is eating, and you should never leave your baby unattended in this seat.

To buy: The Nuby Easy Go Booster Seat is available on Amazon for $22.99.

Bumpkins Silicone Grip Dishes

Bumpkins Silicone Grip Dishes. BUMPKINS

Bumpkins silicone plates grip whatever surface you set them on so your baby can’t throw the plate on the floor. They are ideal to tuck into your bag and bring to a restaurant, hotel or vacation rental when traveling. Easy to clean, dishwasher safe, BPA-free and oven safe, they come in a variety of colors and patterns to suit your taste.

To buy: Bumpkins silicone plates are available on Amazon, with prices as low as $10.99.

Bottom line

It can be hard to decide what to pack and what to leave at home when traveling with your baby. It can also be overwhelming to figure out which travel stroller to buy, which baby carrier to get and all the other essential items you will need on your journey.

While these choices are largely personal and depend greatly on your family and the nature of your trip, these products are favorites among the frequent-traveling families at TPG.

Is Tulum Safe To Visit Right Now? Travel Advisory 2024

Although Tulum is generally safe for travel, there have been more high-profile security incidents and disturbances lately. A large number of the safety concerns are related to corruption, cartels, and the conflict between the rapid development and the local population. Since things have changed from even a few years ago, it is best to educate yourself and determine how much risk you are willing to take before visiting Tulum.

LATEST UPDATES / NEWS from Tulum

January 26 – The Mexican Navy transfers 30 soldiers to strengthen security in Tulum

More than 30 military personnel have been sent to Tulum to support public order and law enforcement. The beginning of the weekend saw the arrival of thirty soldiers. Since then, they have been incorporated into the Tulum team to strengthen public safety.

Mexican military personnel will join the Tulum Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection, according to Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo. He claims that in addition to the most recent 30 arrivals from the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), technology and equipment will also be used to bolster security in Tulum.

“Thirty sailors have just arrived to further reinforce the security of the municipality and they will be helping in several neighborhoods, providing patrols so that people feel safer,” said the Mayor.

Latest Increase in Crime in Tulum

According to TheCancunSun.com, in the latest Quintana Roo Crime Report, Tulum exhibited concerning crime statistics. The report, which tracks 11 different crime categories monthly, showed Tulum with six categories marked as red, indicating high levels of crime, and two marked as yellow, signaling caution.

The crimes associated with the red indicators included homicides, drug dealing, home and business burglaries, rape, and family violence, while vehicle theft and injuries were marked with yellow. Comparatively, the data from December represented a significant increase in crime, as the previous month’s report indicated only three red and two yellow categories.

U.S. Travel Advisory

Travelers should “Exercise Increased Caution” in Tulum, per the U.S. State Department’s travel advisory. This implies that visitors are not deterred from going, but they do so at a greater risk of danger than at other locations.

Employees of the United States government are free to travel to Quintana Roo state. It is recommended that staff members maintain heightened situational awareness after dark in Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen downtown areas and stick to well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist areas.

Canada Travel Advisory

The Mayan Riviera (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, and Tulum) and Acapulco are popular tourist destinations, but there are high rates of violent crime, including homicides, kidnappings, carjackings, and assaults.

There are drug cartels and criminal groups in tourist areas. There have been incidents of gang and cartel fighting in tourist-friendly hotels, nightclubs, and restaurants.

Uninjured witnesses have suffered fatalities.

UK Travel Advisory

Proceed with extra caution after dark in Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen’s downtown areas. Stay in the tourist areas and well-lit pedestrian streets. If you plan to visit any of these locations, pay attention to local advice, exercise caution, and heed the guidance of your tour operator and relevant authorities.

Although tourists have not been the target, anyone nearby may suffer consequences in the event of an incident. There have been multiple incidents of gun violence affecting tourists in Tulum since 2021.

Do credit card annual fees count toward bonus spending requirements?

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

Welcome offers are one of the more exciting parts of getting a new credit card. However, you have to reach a minimum spend requirement.

Most mid- and top-tier credit cards also come with an annual fee. So that leads to the question: Do credit card annual fees count toward bonus spending requirements?

Do credit card annual fees count toward bonus spending requirements?

With large spending requirements, every dollar spent helps. Unfortunately, annual fees do not count toward bonus spending requirements. Most cards clearly state that fees — including annual fees — do not count toward your bonus spending threshold.

Unlike some complex parts of the points-earning process, there is no confusion here. Card issuers clearly state that annual fees don’t count as bonus spending requirements.

Here are the terms and conditions on The Platinum Card® from American Express, stating that rates and fees don’t count:

Amex platinum rates and fees
AMERICAN EXPRESS

Similarly, here are the terms for the Chase Sapphire Reserve sign-up bonus, which clearly state that annual fees do not count:

CHASE

Do you earn rewards points on your credit card’s annual fee?

No, you do not earn reward points on the annual fee on your credit card. That’s because annual fees are not deemed eligible purchases for earning rewards.

Here are the terms and conditions on the Chase Sapphire Reserve for earning rewards points, explicitly excluding annual fees:

CHASE

Related: The best no annual fee credit cards

Bottom Line

While other policies vary significantly between card issuers, the answer on annual fees is almost universal: Your annual fee does not count toward your bonus spending requirement nor does it earn rewards points. You’ll need to make eligible purchases to earn bonus rewards. My advice is to spend an extra couple of hundred dollars above the minimum spending requirement just to include a buffer — and make sure to factor out your annual fee when determining this amount.

A guided city tour can take your group through iconic neighborhoods like La Boca, with its colorful houses and tango dancers on the streets, and Recoleta, famous for its cemetery and upscale cafes. Don’t miss a group tango lesson, a quintessential Buenos Aires experience. For food enthusiasts, a group culinary tour to savor Argentine steaks and Malbec is a must.

2. Wine Tasting in Mendoza

Duration: 2-3 days

Next, head to Mendoza, Argentina’s wine country, nestled at the foot of the Andes. This region is perfect for groups who appreciate fine wines and serene landscapes. For adventure seekers, a group hike or horseback ride in the Andes can be an exhilarating addition.

3. Adventure in Bariloche and the Lake District

Delta’s futuristic first-class recliners are coming to the Boeing 737

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Delta Air Lines’ latest inflight product will soon be flying on another jet.

The Atlanta-based carrier confirmed on Monday that it has begun installing its futuristic domestic first-class recliner on the Boeing 737-800 fleet.

This seat, which debuted on the Airbus A321neo in May 2022, has generally received positive reviews from travelers. It features an all-new design for domestic first class, which has historically just been a standard, no-frills recliner.

Want more airline-specific news? Sign up for TPG’s free biweekly Aviation newsletter.

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

These new seats sport large privacy wings, extra storage areas, enhanced inflight entertainment systems and more.

Delta will install 16 of these seats on board each Boeing 737-800 in an industry-standard 2-2 configuration.

Travel better: Best credit cards for airport lounge access

In addition to the new first-class seats, Delta will also retrofit the rest of the jet with new economy seats. The main upgrade at the back of the plane will be new 11-inch seatback inflight entertainment systems, which sport the latest upgrades from Panasonic.

Other nose-to-tail enhancements include refreshed lavatories that feature touchless flushing and hand-washing sensors.

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Unfortunately, Delta stopped short of installing new oversized overhead bins on these planes, so passengers will likely still need to gate-check carry-on bags during full flights.

As for the timeline, the first retrofitted Boeing 737-800, registered N3744F, reentered served on Jan. 20 and will cycle its way through the airline’s network.

Delta’s remaining 76 Boeing 737-800s will also receive cabin upgrades in the coming months and years, with reports saying that the entire process will be completed by the end of 2025.

For its part, Delta shared that “we are committed to maintaining an elevated and premium customer experience across all touchpoints of the travel journey – this includes making improvements to our aircraft interiors as part of ongoing, planned retrofits.”

The airline also teased that it plans to share more details about its premium products shortly. It wasn’t immediately clear what the airline was referring to, but it’s possible that the carrier may finally reveal details about its upcoming premium-heavy Airbus A321neo configuration that’s expected to feature lie-flat pods and premium economy recliners.

For Delta, expanding the footprint of its new domestic first-class recliner comes as the carrier has been laser-focused on chasing premium revenues over the past few years.

The carrier has tried to position itself as the country’s most premium airline and, as part of that, has introduced product enhancements to upgrade the onboard experience.

Though United Airlines has since debuted its own iteration of a new first-class recliner, Delta’s version remains the most futuristic one flying in the domestic skies.

As this product’s footprint grows, Delta loyalists should also be excited to see the carrier updating some of its oldest jets in the fleet. The 737-800s used to feature outdated cabins with seatback screens that might even be smaller than the latest iPhone models.
