From London to Rio de Janeiro, international Pride events that happen all year

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

For the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies, the month of June is a special one.

While some of the biggest Pride celebrations globally happen in June (like the iconic New York City Pride March), there are actually tons of Pride celebrations, parades and festivals that happen throughout the year.

With that in mind, it’s not too late to plan a Pride-themed trip to wave your rainbow flags and show support for a vibrant, loving community that’s been making significant advances in rights and freedoms in some corners of the planet while facing hateful rhetoric, persecution and violence in others.

In fact, the U.S. Department of State recently issued a worldwide alert for global Pride events, warning of “the increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against [LGBTQIA+] persons and events.” It’s worth noting, though, that no details have been offered on specific threats or circumstances that triggered this advisory.

As always, the LGBTQIA+ community stands up in the face of adversity, and that can be seen in full force at Pride events year-round.

If you’re curious about where to go, The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association has a handy online calendar with events throughout the year. The organization also has plenty of resources to help the LGBTQIA+ community plan trips to safe and inclusive destinations worldwide.

Here are helpful links to some of the major events across the globe:

For a deeper look at where people are traveling for Pride, Airbnb shared some data breaking down how two different groups of travelers, Generation Z and millennials, are planning to celebrate. According to Airbnb, millennials continue to celebrate Pride “in familiar places,” while Gen Zers are “exploring both the newer Pride celebrations and traditional ones.”

The map below shows the most popular American and Canadian booking spots for Pride on Airbnb, with green circles representing millennial destinations and purple circles representing locations that are popular with Gen Z.

AIRBNB

In terms of international destinations, Gen Z is heading to a variety of places, including San Jose, Costa Rica; Lima, Peru; Prague; Bogota, Colombia; Madrid; London and Manchester, United Kingdom; Berlin and Cologne, Germany; and Thessaloniki, Greece.

Meanwhile, millennials’ top booked destinations outside the U.S. include Taipei, Taiwan; Rio de Janeiro; Bogota; Hong Kong; Berlin; Oslo, Norway; Montreal; Naples, Italy; Athens, Greece; and Santiago, Chile.

Where to stay

With so many exciting Pride events happening worldwide, there are also many options for inclusive places to stay.

One great place to start is with Preferred Hotels, a network of highly curated independent hotels spanning the globe. Last year, Preferred Hotels revamped its LGBTQIA+ inclusive Preferred Pride program; it curates hotels that “thoughtfully cater to the unique needs and preferences of LGBTQ+ travelers.” These hotels have also promised to:

Demonstrate a commitment to creating a workplace environment that is welcoming and inclusive to both employees and guests who identify as LGBTQIA+Provide specific LGBTQIA+ diversity training to all employeesActively support the LGBTQIA+ community, locally or globally, through charitable donations, volunteer days, partnerships or Preferred Pride initiatives

There are more than 80 qualifying hotels right now, all of which can be found on a dedicated landing page for the Preferred Pride program.

Hyatt is also trying to help folks save on a Pride trip this year by offering 20% off qualified stays at participating hotels by using the code “PRIDE” while booking. Other Hyatt hotels are offering the discount plus more perks at participating hotels with the code “PROUD.”

One standout Hyatt property perfect for Pride is The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel, a downtown New York hotel that’s offering 15% off nightly rates, two Pride cocktails and a potential room upgrade (when available) for stays between June 1 and July 7.

Hyatt’s Dream Hotels is also offering special packages and events around the country, like a drag brunch at Dream Nashville; discounts, drinks, a Pride gift and a potential room upgrade at Dream Hollywood; and margaritas and late checkout for Pride at Dream South Beach.

Other fun Pride packages include:

Mondrian Los Angeles: The Pride Ready package includes a playful kit with body glitter and clack fans, among other amenities.La Concha Resort in San Juan, Puerto Rico: Pride offerings include 20% off rooms, two drink vouchers and two limited-edition gifts.Sheraton Dallas Hotel: The Pride and Joy Couples Retreat package includes a bottle of Champagne and breakfast for two, making it perfect for those who want to celebrate without the crowds.Crowne Plaza HY36 Midtown Manhattan in New York City: The Stay with Pride package includes two Pride cocktails, a goodie bag with Pride accessories and a $10 donation to the Ali Forney Center.

Beyond hotels

Another great way to celebrate Pride is by joining a Pride-themed tour group or cruise.

Next year, Uniworld, a boutique river cruise company, is back with its Out on the Rivers sailings, including a Christmas market cruise that proves you can celebrate Pride any time of the year.

Or, for something right around the corner, Contiki’s Pride-focused Greek Island Hopping trip will celebrate Pride for 11 days around some of Greece’s most epic islands (and parties).

And on Celebrity Cruises, every single ship celebrates Pride during June with special events, activities, performances and parties, depending on the ship.

What’s it like flying Finnair business class from London to Helsinki?

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

What’s it like flying Finnair business class from London to Helsinki?

Oh Finnair! We noticed that the aircraft had been changed from an Airbus A350 to an Airbus A321. However, since that was to prevent even more than the 1 hour delay, you are forgiven. Finnair business class is still good on the short-haul aircraft, thankfully!

After spending some time in the luscious Cathay Pacific First Class lounge in Terminal 3 at Heathrow, not to mention some other lounges, it was time to head to the gate. Priority boarding was called and I was among the first on the plane.

AY1338 – London Heathrow to Helsinki (LHR-HEL) 20 April 2024 Airbus A321 – OH-LZS Seat: Business Class 3A Departure: 18:10 Arrival: 23:00

Greeting the Finnair crew, I turned right and was surprised to find myself in an Airbus A321. I wryly smiled to myself – ahh, an aircraft swap. That wasn’t planned for tonight’s bingo card, but what can you do?

Time To Go

Boarding completed very quickly, and after the safety demonstration, we headed for the runway. Flying at sunset is always an utterly charming experience, so it was going to be a good flight.

a man sitting in an airplane

Soon enough we took to the sky and set course for HEL. The lady sitting beside me struck up polite conversation, and she also commented on the fact it wasn’t the A350 with the AirLounge seats.

Finnair Business Class Service

Starting off the festivities, the crew handed out hot towels to refresh ourselves with. This is always welcome, as one does become a little sweaty running around an airport. Stress sweat? Who knows! Next came a drinks service, accompanied by pretzels. After my last Finnair flight, I was well prepared – the signature Northern Blush and a Blueberry juice for me.

a white towel on a table

a drink and a drink on a table

a tray with food on it

a cup of tea and a glass on a table

an airplane window with a view of the sky and clouds

a can of liquid next to a glass of water
Dinner came next, which was chicken and mash with brussels sprouts, along with a tasty starter and a chocolate for dessert. Finnair business class meals are damned delicious and this one didn’t disappoint. From there, I finished off with a night cap, enjoying the sunset until we landed in Helsinki.

Overall Thoughts

I like flying Finnair and I think they’re an excellent oneworld alliance airline. The cabin crew are friendly and efficient, plus the cabins are comfortable.

Having a selection of signature drinks, as well as Finnish staples, really makes you feel the vibe of the Nordic country when flying. It’s just a lot of fun and I highly recommend it.

Southwest adds 7 new routes, phases out 4 others in latest network shake-up

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Southwest Airlines is making another round of changes to its route map.

This one includes seven new routes, though they come at the expense of four that are either being cut or significantly scaled back in the coming months. This network shake-up was first seen in Cirium Diio schedules and later confirmed by a carrier spokesperson.

Southwest is making a big play in Las Vegas with the addition of three new routes from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS).

From LAS, the airline will add service to Albany and Rochester in New York and Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Albany flight begins Aug. 5, while the other two routes commence Oct. 3.

In addition to the new Vegas routes, Southwest will add service in the following four markets.

Nashville to Birmingham, Alabama, starts Nov. 3.Miami to Islip, New York, starts Nov. 3.Kansas City, Missouri, to Sacramento, starts Oct. 3.Phoenix to Birmingham, Alabama, starts Nov. 3.

However, it’s not all good news for Southwest’s network. For one, the airline is canceling service between Fort Lauderdale and Islip (and moving this route to Miami).

The airline will also phase out three other routes earlier than planned. Flights from Kansas City to Minneapolis will stop after the Sunday following Thanksgiving.

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Meanwhile, starting in August, service from Denver to Eugene, Oregon, and Santa Barbara, California, will only be operated on certain weekends through the end of the year. (These flights were originally scheduled to be operated at least once a day into 2025.)

And then, once the calendar turns to 2025, Southwest will scrap these Denver routes entirely.

Interestingly, six of the seven new routes are currently uncontested, Cirium schedules show. Southwest’s only competitor will be ultra-low-cost carrier Allegiant Air on the Las Vegas-to-Grand Rapids flight.

Without competition, the airline likely thinks it can convince flyers to take its new nonstop flights (or connect onward to other destinations via its bases). But whether these new services will fill up is another question.

There were, on average, 65 passengers a day flying from Vegas to Albany or from Vegas to Rochester in 2023, according to Department of Transportation data. The route between Kansas City and Sacramento seems to have had the highest historical demand, with around 95 passengers per day flying between these cities in 2023. (The Nashville-to-Birmingham route had just about two passengers a day.)

Southwest operates just one type of jet — the Boeing 737 — of which the smallest variant holds 143 travelers. The airline likely has targets in mind for these flights, but it remains to be seen how they will perform.

For its part, Southwest said that “this is a continued focus: optimizing the usage of our People and planes to serve our Customers with relevant air service.”

This latest move is a bit unusual for Southwest’s network planning team. Historically, the airline has made big route updates in tandem with schedule extensions. However, given that the company hasn’t been performing as well as it had before the pandemic and the ongoing delivery delays from Boeing, the airline is probably seeing more of a need to make quick pivots.

Commenting on Southwest’s lackluster first-quarter performance, CEO Bob Jordan said succinctly that “network and capacity changes will continue.”

Just last month, Southwest announced that it would drop four cities from its network, a rare move that the airline has historically tried to avoid. The carrier also added four new routes but cut two others in April.

Unexpected Developments: What Happens If You Don’t Feel Anything Days After an Accident

Being involved in a car accident can be a frightening experience that frequently leaves victims with immediate physical injury and psychological impact. What happens if days go by without any apparent indicators of an injury?

It’s common for victims to feel relief following an accident if they don’t suffer any pain or discomfort immediately following the incident. However, unanticipated symptoms could occur within a few days or weeks that highlight underlying injuries that were initially missed.

This article will discuss several reasons people might not experience symptoms immediately following an injury, the significance of getting medical help, and the consequences of delayed symptoms.

What Happens If You Don't Feel Anything Days After an Accident
Being involved in a car accident can be a frightening experience that frequently leaves victims with immediate physical injury and psychological impact

What Happens After a Car Accident?

A car accident’s aftermath can be a confusing and overwhelming experience. As it can result in minor to severe injuries and even death, the crash can cause complicated legal, emotional, and physical impacts on your life.

Unfortunately, auto collisions resulting in catastrophic injuries and other damages can cause significant financial stress due to medical bills, lost wages, and out-of-pocket expenses. Aside from this, you may also experience emotional distress and other emotional effects that may hinder you from living your everyday life.

Sometimes, victims may not realize the full severity of their injuries or pain in the early aftermath because shock and adrenaline may conceal injuries or pain. However, as time goes on, unforeseen events could appear and reveal underlying trauma or previously missed injuries.

If you suffer from such losses from a car accident due to someone else’s wrongful actions, you have the right to file a personal injury claim for compensation. However, when dealing with a car accident claim, you must determine the full extent of your damages, which can be challenging if you are still recovering from the crash. It is best to seek assistance from a legal expert who can negotiate with the at-fault party’s insurance company while you focus on your overall well-being.

Don’t forget to get travel insurance for your trip—get coverage for: • Medical emergencies • Stolen or lost goods • Canceled flights and more I’ve been using VISITORS COVERAGE for years and highly recommend it!

What Happens If You Don’t Feel Anything Days After an Accident?

Delayed symptoms or injuries might still occur even if you don’t feel anything for days following a car accident. Even though you feel fine initially, some injuries could not be evident immediately after the incident. This delayed onset of symptoms frequently happens in auto accidents when the victim experiences shock, adrenaline, or latent injuries that show up gradually.

Ignoring delayed symptoms carries alarming risks. In addition to the health complications that may arise, you may face legal issues related to the delayed symptom when claiming compensation.

Health Complications

Usually, delayed symptoms stem from an even more significant injury from a car accident. For instance, dizziness, blurred vision, or headaches after a car accident can signify having a traumatic brain injury. So, if you ignore these symptoms, you might miss out on identifying and curing a long-term or permanent injury.

Aside from this, catastrophic auto crashes can also lead to emotional and psychological stress. If you are involved in a car accident, check for delayed-onset psychological symptoms, including anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Ignoring these symptoms might cause persistent psychological harm that lowers quality of life and interferes with day-to-day functioning.

Usually, delayed symptoms stem from an even more significant injury from a car accident. For instance, dizziness, blurred vision, or headaches after a car accident can signify having a traumatic brain injury.

Legal Implications

A car accident claim arises to seek compensation for the injuries and damages sustained by the victim. In such instances, the at-fault party’s insurance company will try to reduce the settlement by resolving the case as quickly as possible. While this may seem like a good deal, it hardly compensates for the total losses, especially if you have delayed injuries.

For example, a drunk driver hit you. You seemed fine after the crash, so you didn’t have to check yourself in a hospital. The liable party’s insurance provider called you a day after the collision and offered you a settlement. Since it appeared to be a reasonable offer, you accepted it.

Weeks after the settlement, you noticed you were having migraines and blurred vision. Unfortunately, the doctors determined that you have a brain injury due to a severe impact, possibly from the collision. You can no longer seek compensation for the injury since you accepted the initial offer.

This is why it is crucial to assess your overall well-being and other damages before accepting an offer. A car accident lawyer can help you connect with the appropriate medical practitioners for a checkup, examine the overall damage, and negotiate for the maximum compensation.

Steps to Take If You Don’t Feel Anything Days After an Accident

If you don’t feel anything days after an accident, this does not mean you didn’t sustain injuries from the crash. Sometimes, late-appearing injuries may manifest days, weeks, or months after the accident. It is best to follow the steps below to avoid ignoring delayed symptoms if you have one.

Seek Medical Attention

It is best to have a comprehensive medical checkup by a healthcare provider whether or not you feel hurt. Without a medical examination, specific injuries, such as concussions or internal injuries, might not be visible. A physician can locate any hidden injuries, note them in your medical file, and, if required, suggest the best course of action.

Monitor Your Health

Even if you don’t feel any pain or discomfort immediately after an accident, it is important to monitor your physical and mental health in the days that follow. Certain types of injuries, like whiplash or soft tissue injuries, could take days or even weeks to show symptoms.

It can be helpful to consider your well-being every day. Make thorough notes of any pain, discomfort, or symptoms you encounter in the days after the injury. Keep track of each symptom’s time, date, extent, and length. Document any medical consultations, procedures, or prescription drugs issued by medical professionals.

Delayed injuries can still occur though you don't feel anything for days following a car accident.
Certain types of injuries, like whiplash or soft tissue injuries, could take days or even weeks to show symptoms.

Observe Medical Advice

If medical evaluations reveal injuries or symptoms, it is critical to heed the advice of your healthcare professional regarding treatment, rehabilitation, and aftercare. Following recommended medical advice and showing up for all scheduled checkups will help you heal and strengthen your personal injury claim.

This is because if you fail to follow the recommended checkups or treatments, the other party’s insurance provider may insist that your injuries are not as severe as you claim them to be. Unfortunately, this may reduce your compensation or lead to case dismissal in the worst-case scenario.

Consult with a Car Accident Lawyer

Most victims ask, “Do I need lawyer for a minor car accidentThe truth is a seemingly minor accident can result in a significant impact financially, emotionally, and legally, especially if the symptoms of the delayed injuries are ignored. This is why it is crucial to seek assistance from a car accident lawyer, even if you think you have a minor case.

Let’s say you have a traumatic brain injury that resurfaced its symptoms weeks after the accident. Unfortunately, since you thought you didn’t sustain injuries and the crash was minor, you didn’t seek medical attention and collect proof at the scene. Because of this, you don’t have evidence to hold the liable party responsible for the damages.

Seeking advice from a personal injury lawyer with experience in managing car accident claims is essential if you start to have delayed symptoms or injuries following an accident. A lawyer can evaluate your case, review your medical records, and suggest the best action for you. They can also assist you in navigating the claims process, gathering evidence, defending your legal rights, and pursuing damages and compensation for your injuries.

Protecting Your Rights in a Car Accident with Delayed Injuries

After a car accident, experiencing delayed symptoms or injuries can be terrifying and challenging to manage. But in situations like this, putting your health first and safeguarding your legal rights is critical. Neglecting or ignoring delayed symptoms may have detrimental effects on your health and your capacity to pursue damages for your injuries.

If you find yourself in a situation where you don’t feel anything days after an injury, take preventative measures to safeguard your well-being and legal rights. Staying careful, receiving medical attention, and finding legal representation can help you negotiate the challenges of delayed injuries and protect your rights in the aftermath of a car accident.

Ritz-Carlton is taking over a famed resort on the North Shore of Oahu

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

The North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii is about to look a lot better for points and miles enthusiasts, specifically Marriott Bonvoy fans: The legendary Turtle Bay Resort is transforming into a Ritz-Carlton.

Dubbed “Oahu’s North Shore gem” by TPG’s own Summer Hull, Turtle Bay Resort is well known for its stunning scenery, beautiful grounds and rooms, incredible pool and awesome swells that attract surfers from around the world (or people who like to watch surfers from a safe distance). All of that helped the property earn a spot on our list of the best resorts and hotels in Hawaii.

Now, Host Hotels & Resorts has entered into an agreement to purchase the 450-room resort and 49 acres of undeveloped land that could be used for future development for about $680 million, according to a company statement.

Once the deal is completed (early July of this year is expected), Turtle Bay will be reflagged as a Ritz-Carlton and Marriott will take over managing the property.

SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY

While we’ll have to wait and see what changes will be made to transform the property into a Ritz-Carlton, our guess is that not too much will be required since Turtle Bay remodeled while closed during the early parts of the COVID-19 pandemic (from March 2020 until June 2021).

The Ritz-Carlton flag is also likely to make the already pricey property much more expensive.

What’s more interesting is what Host Hotels & Resorts might do with the nearly 50 acres of land it also acquired — and if we might see another luxury resort in the near future. Host Hotels & Resorts isn’t new to Hawaii, luxury hospitality or the Ritz-Carlton brand; in fact, the company’s portfolio includes the Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui; The Ritz-Carlton, Naples in Florida; the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort and even the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort.

Stay tuned as we learn more about Turtle Bay’s exciting transition into a Ritz-Carlton.

How to get a free or cheap cruise ship cabin upgrade

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

A real score for cruise passengers is a free or cheap cabin upgrade. Just like with airline seats, you can’t count on an upgrade — but it sure feels great when it happens. Several methods will help improve your chances of landing in better cruise ship accommodations.

Before I get into details, let’s start with some facts: On a typical ship, the basic categories of cruise rooms are inside (no view), outside (with window or porthole), balcony, minisuite and suite. It’s rare to get more than a one-category upgrade, so don’t think you can book an inside cabin and wind up in a fancy suite. More common is that you might find an upgrade to a better inside cabin. Make sure you have realistic expectations.

Your best course is always to book the nicest cabin you can afford. Here are some tricks to scoring a free or discounted cruise ship cabin upgrade and landing better cruise rooms without breaking the bank.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

Look for an upgrade sale

Cruise line sales are the easiest way to score cheap or free upgraded accommodations. Various mass-market brands will run periodic promotions, especially during the fall and winter “wave season” sale periods. You might also see discounted upgrades offered on cruises during shoulder seasons, such as immediately after children return to school in the fall.

A cruise ship cabin's balcony with two people standing against the railing
A cruise ship cabin with a balcony. CUNARD CRUISES

Free or discounted promotions encourage upgrades from inside cabins to ocean views and from ocean views to balconies. One tactic during these sales is to list outside and balcony cabins at the same price. If you can’t find a deal on moving up a category, you might see a free upgrade to a bigger or better-located cabin within the category you originally planned to book. (Even within categories, the sizes and prices of cabins vary.)

Book a ‘guarantee’ cabin

When you book a cruise, you typically choose a cabin in your desired location. With a “guarantee” cabin, you leave it up to the cruise line to assign you accommodations either in the category you booked or a better one. The bet is that your category will sell out, and the cruise line will have to move you up for free — say, from an outside to a balcony cabin.

In the worst-case scenario, you end up in the category you booked; in the best case, you get your dream cabin. There is a catch, though. Since you still can’t choose your specific cabin, you could end up in a noisy or otherwise undesirable area of the ship — even if the room is technically an upgrade from what you booked. For example, that great view you think you snagged may end up being blocked by lifeboats.

Related: Why it pays to upgrade your cabin

Join a loyalty program

Cruise lines naturally give upgrade preferences to frequent cruisers who are members of their loyalty programs. It’s easy to join. In fact, you might be a member without even knowing it if your name was added to a cruise line’s email and mailing list after your first cruise with the brand.

As a loyalty program member, look out for promotional deals you’ll receive. Targeted emails and newsletters will alert you to members-only discounts or offers or inform you about upgrades before nonmembers get word. The cruise line might also send you invitations to bid for upgrades or offer discounted upgrades on cruises you’ve already booked.

Additionally, you can rack up points for perks that might eventually include free or discounted upgrades. For instance, if you reach the top Diamond status with Carnival Cruise Line’s Very Important Fun Person loyalty program, you get a one-time free cabin upgrade.

Work with an experienced cruise travel agent

Travel agents, especially those who do a lot of business with a particular cruise line, have a certain amount of pull. Your agent might be able to snag you an upgrade by contacting the cruise line and asking for a favor. You might not know you have been upgraded until you get to the ship, as it will be based on whether or not cabins are available at the last minute.

Related: 5 reasons to turn down a cruise ship cabin upgrade

Your travel adviser can also steer you toward specific cruise lines or sailings where you stand a better chance of an upgrade. Also, your agency could have access to special group rates, meaning you’ll pay a discounted price for that upgraded cabin you desire.

Bid for an upgrade

A few years ago, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and MSC Cruises were among the cruise lines that took a page from international airlines (such as Qantas and Aer Lingus) and began offering bidding programs for upgrades. Luxury river cruise line Uniworld also offers bidding.

Cruise cabin on Celebrity Edge
An Infinite Veranda cabin on Celebrity Edge. CELEBRITY CRUISES

These online programs are basically silent auctions that only select cruisers (preference is given to loyalty club members) are invited to join. The cruise line sets a minimum bid, and you can go up in price from there.

Your chance of an upgrade might be based on luck, skill or both. The advice from successful bidders is to go up from the minimum, but how much is a personal choice. Some people snag better accommodations for less than $20, some for $100 or more. You don’t pay anything unless your bid is accepted.

sk once on board

The hotel director on any cruise ship has a certain amount of discretion in moving guests to different cabins. Being bold enough to ask for an upgrade once you are on the ship could pay off.

To try your luck, you’ll want to ask about an upgrade at guest services. Since the crew there will spend embarkation day fielding many questions and complaints from grumpy, travel-weary cruisers, your best bet may be to head to your assigned cabin. Then, wait until the second day of your cruise to ask for an upgrade.

Put on a big smile, be super friendly and ask if there is any chance a better cabin is available. If they don’t offer you an upgrade for free, you might suggest you are willing to pay a small fee.

Mention your special occasion

If you’re celebrating a special occasion — such as a birthday, anniversary or honeymoon — on board, the cruise line or your travel agent can find ways to fete you, including by upgrading your cabin.

When you book your cruise, note in your reservation (or remind your travel agent to note) that you’re celebrating a special event in your life. Whether you are a loyal customer or a first-timer that the cruise line hopes will become a repeat cruiser, you might be rewarded with an upgrade.

This sort of upgrade would typically be a “surprise” that occurs when you check in at the pier, so you can’t plan for it in advance. It never hurts to remind the staff how excited you are to be celebrating on the ship and ask if there is any chance for an upgrade.

Nationwide Alaska Airlines ground stop just lifted

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

The Federal Aviation Administration just lifted a nationwide ground stop for Alaska Airlines.

Late Wednesday morning, the FAA issued an advisory stating that Alaska Airlines was in a full nationwide ground stop. The advisory reads that “all Alaska mainline … flights ground stopped.”

A second advisory corrected that it didn’t include flights at Horizon or SkyWest, Alaska’s regional affiliates.

Alaska told TPG:

This morning we experienced an issue while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance. Out of an abundance of caution, we requested a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights, which was instituted at approximately 7:30am PT. The issue was mitigated and the ground stop for Alaska and Horizon flights expired at 8:30am PT. We have begun releasing flights. Residual delays are expected throughout the day. We apologize for the inconvenience and encourage guests to check the status of their flights on alaskaair.com or the Alaska App prior to heading to the airport.

That issue has now been resolved.

There were anecdotal reports of some delays at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The carrier is based in Seattle, and that airport is its largest hub.

In fact, some delays and cancellations were showing up on FlightAware this morning.

Review: Air Canada Jazz Business Class E175 New York LGA to Montreal

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Review: Air Canada Jazz Business Class E175 New York LGA to Montreal

Background and Booking

The first leg of my trip to Quebec City (YQB) was this flight from New York (LGA) to Montreal (YUL) on Air Canada Jazz Business Class aboard the Embraer E175. Then, I would fly from Montreal (YUL) to Quebec City (YQB). The only nonstop to Quebec City from the New York City area is on United, from Newark (EWR), but the price of that flight was quite expensive. I purposely booked a flight with an overnight connection as I was trying to align the second leg with a friend, but didn’t want to leave New York at 6 am, so I decided to fly the night before.

I booked this flight with a combination of Aeroplan points and cash as I had some sitting in my account. Business class was only 1,000 more Aeroplan Miles, so I decided to take the splurge to book Business Class instead of Economy.

Air Canada has 3 different operating divisions for commercial service. So, Air Canada is the mainline carrier, Air Canada Express (Jazz) is the regional division that uses smaller planes and Air Canada Rouge is the low-cost vacation division. The New York (LGA) to Montreal (YUL) route is served by both Air Canada and Air Canada Express (Jazz) flights.

Same Day Change

Air Canada has a nice same-day change policy, and different rules depending on your destination. For US to Canada flights, all business class tickets include same-day changes for free. Also, Comfort, Latitude, and Flexible Premium Economy fares include same-day changes for free.

At check-in 24 hours before your flight, during the check-in process you can check for available flights to switch to. As long as there is available space, you’ll be able to make the switch. I originally was on the last flight for the night, but wanted to go to Montreal earlier to have more rest at the airport hotel I was staying at, so I made the change to an earlier flight.

Flight Details

Air Canada Express (Jazz) Flight 8641 New York (LGA) to Montreal (YUL) Date: May 2024 Scheduled Departure: 6:15 PM Scheduled Arrival: 7:45 PM Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes Aircraft: Embraer 175 Cabin: Business Class Seat: 3A

t the AirportAir Canada utilizes Terminal B at LaGuardia Airport, which I like as it’s modern and nice. The check-in area was quite empty, and I was helped quickly to print out my boarding pass.

an airport check in area
Air Canada Check-In at LGA

Passing TSA PreCheck was quick and then I was off to the lounge. While I’ve visited AMEX Centurion Lounge many times before here in Terminal B, I haven’t been to the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge before so I was happy that my business class ticket would give me access. Despite the food selection lacking some more protein offerings, I found the Maple Leaf lounge to be quite nice for a “domestic-style” lounge. It wasn’t too crowded which was nice to get some work done and if you’re interested I wrote a full review here. If you don’t mind more crowds but better food, the Centurion Lounge might be good option to start at, and then come relax at the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge.

Boarding & Air Canada Jazz Business Class on the Embraer E175

The boarding time for the flight was 25 minutes before our scheduled departure time. The lounge provided a boarding announcement for the flight, then I headed out to the gate which was a short three-minute walk over. When I arrived, it was time for Zone 1 (Business Class) to board.

When I boarded, the AC system and engines were off, so it was oddly quiet, especially since there was no boarding music. I was surprised to see a seat back screen for an Embraer 175. I think it’s the first E175 I’ve been on with a seat back screen which was cool! To my surprise, the seats were cloth, as I’ve only flown in leather-style seats on the E175. The Air Canada Express (Jazz) E175 has 4 rows of Business in a 1-2 configuration. aeroLOPA states that the seat pitch in Business Class is 38 inches, with a width of 20 inches. It felt quite similar to other E175 First/Business cabins on other airlines, with a tiny cupholder on the left armrest, and a full-sized armrest that comes out of the righthand armrest.

It’s always nice sitting on the A side of the E175 when flying in First/Business when traveling alone as it’s just one seat so you won’t have a neighbor.

The Flight

The boarding door closed 5 minutes before our scheduled departure time and we left the gate exactly on time. The captain let us know that it would be an hour in the air, but we got a wheels-up time from ATC in 55 minutes so there might be a delay. He said we would taxi to the runway and wait closer to see if we could perhaps leave closer to our scheduled departure time. We ended up parking near the runway for a while.

The flight attendant handed us bottles of water, and then while we were parked near the runway, he came to pass our headphones for the seat-back IFE system.

a bottle of water on a arm rest
Water and Headphones

We ended up taking off 40 minutes past our scheduled departure time, and I started to find a movie to watch in the meantime. The IFE screen has movies, TV and audio options, and while the software was dated, it still was alright to navigate.

a screen with a woman on it

Snack & Beverage Service

Shortly after reaching cruising altitude, the flight attendant came through the aisle to take drink orders. Additionally, a snack was provided which I was surprised was so elaborate. It was a plate with hummus and bread, plus real silverware was used. I was quite surprised, as a flight of this length in the US would have barely a snack service if you are lucky. I flew the same route a few days later on American Airlines, and only a granola bar was provided.

a plate of food on Air Canada Jazz Business Class
Snack Plate

Shortly after I finished eating, we were already making our initial descent for landing. We got to see nice views of Montreal before landing.

an aerial view of a city
Landing in Montreal

We landed 8 minutes past our arrival time and got to the gate about 15 minutes late. Not bad of a delay given the long wait at LaGuardia. Then I was off to the Montreal Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel!

The Verdict

Overall, I had a great time flying Air Canada Jazz Business Class for the first time. I have never been on an Embraer 175 with seat-back screens, and the fact that they still served a snack plate with real silverware on such a short flight was impressive, as a domestic US carrier would not (evidenced by my American Airlines flight back). I would not hesitate to fly Air Canada Jazz Business Class again in the future.

When Are Speculative Points Transfers Worth It?

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

In order to diversify your rewards and avoid devaluations, I recommend earning transferable points currencies whenever possible. These points are racked up with programs like Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou, etc.

A large part of the value from these currencies comes from their flexibility. Rather than being committed to a single rewards program that could devalue without notice, you have the opportunity to transfer your points to many other programs, typically instantly. This is fantastic flexibility that leaves you best positioned for redemptions.

While my general advice is to avoid transferring these points without a specific use in mind, are there situations where a speculative transfer is worth it? I wanted to discuss that in more detail in this post…

void transferring points unless you have a reason to do so

Let me start by saying that in general you shouldn’t move your transferable points currencies to a specific partner until you’re ready to book your ticket. Assuming points transfers are generally instant (and I make an effort to use programs where that’s the case), I typically only transfer points minutes before I’m ready to book an award ticket.

Your points lose flexibility the second you move them from a transferable points currency to a specific airline or hotel points currency, since you can’t move them back.

For example, say you have Chase Ultimate Rewards points. While Chase has several great partners, you have so much more flexibility when you have the points with Chase, where you can then transfer them to Air Canada Aeroplan for amazing flight redemptions, or World of Hyatt for amazing hotel redemptions. The second you transfer them to either program, you lose the flexibility of making any other type of redemption.

So I absolutely recommend not moving your transferrable points to a partner program until you’re ready to book, with one major exception…

Keep your transferable points as flexible as possible

My approach to speculative points transfers

One of the great things about transferable points currencies is that we sometimes see transfer bonuses offered. This could include everything from a 25% bonus from Citi ThankYou to Air France-KLM Flying Blue, to a 30% bonus from Amex Membership Rewards to British Airways Executive Club, to a 20% bonus from Chase Ultimate Rewards to Air Canada Aeroplan.

Most major transferrable points currencies offer a bonus to at least some partners a few times per year, and this could be a great way to maximize points. After all, if you’re going to redeem through a program like Air France-KLM Flying Blue, wouldn’t you rather use fewer transferable points?

So, how should you go about balancing maintaining the flexibility of transferable points currencies while also taking advantage of transfer bonuses without a specific redemption in mind? As someone who both earns and redeems a lot of points, here’s my philosophy:

There are some programs that I constantly redeem points through, like Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Club, Avianca LifeMiles, British Airways Executive Club, etc.; if there’s a transfer bonus and my balance of points with the program is low, I’ll usually take advantage of a speculative bonus, since I’m confident I’d redeem those points in the near future anywayI try to consider how often we see transfer bonuses to a particular program as well, and time it accordingly; for example, I expect to see a bonus from a major currency to Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Avianca LifeMiles at least every few months, while transfer bonuses to Air Canada Aeroplan and British Airways Executive Club are rarerI also try to be strategic about which transferable points currency I transfer points from; for example, I’m usually most hesitant to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points, since it’s the only one of the “big four” programs that transfers to World of HyattI prefer to make speculative transfers to programs where there are many good uses of points, rather than just one single sweet spot, since that could be devalued before I have the chance to bookWhen there’s a transfer bonus that I plan to take advantage of, by default I usually transfer enough points for two premium one-way tickets to where I’d probably consider traveling to

I sometimes take advantage of Air Canada Aeroplan bonuses

Obviously I don’t have a crystal ball and can’t perfectly predict my future travels, but I find that taking advantage of transferable points currencies has suited me well. As a general rule of thumb:

I’ll take advantage of an Amex Membership Rewards to Air Canada Aeroplan transfer bonus whenever it’s available, assuming my Aeroplan points balance is lowI’ll take advantage of a Capital One or Citi ThankYou to Air France-KLM Flying Blue or Avianca LifeMiles transfer bonus whenever it’s available, assuming my Flying Blue or LifeMiles mileage balance is low

I frequently take advantage of Air France-KLM Flying Blue bonuses

Let me also emphasize that I’ve been engaged in miles & points thing for a very long time, and have a good sense of my travel patterns, historical program devaluations, etc.

If you’re new to miles & points and have just racked up 100K points for the first time with a transferable points currency, absolutely don’t take advantage of a speculative transfer bonus, especially if you’re not 100% sure what you’re doing. You’ll be much better suited by having flexibility than taking advantage of a bonus to a specific program.

Bottom line

Transferable points currencies give you lots of flexibility, which is invaluable when it’s time to book the award you’re looking for. Whenever possible, I’d recommend only transferring points when you’re ready to book. The one exception is when there are transfer bonuses, in which case I think a speculative transfer could make sense.

However, I’d only recommend a speculative transfer if it’s a program you frequently redeem through, and if it’s one where your points balance is low.

What’s your take on speculative points transfers? Do you ever take advantage of them?

DoorDash Rewards Mastercard review: Doesn’t quite deliver

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

DoorDash Rewards Mastercard® overview

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

The DoorDash Rewards Mastercard® is a decent cash-back option for those who love ordering in, earning 4% back on DoorDash and Caviar orders and 3% back on online or in-store restaurant purchases. It’s a solid contender for those who want to earn cash-back rewards on their dining purchases, but not the best option for earning or redeeming rewards. Card rating*: ⭐⭐

*Card rating is based on the opinion of TPG’s editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

Dining delivery has been around for over a decade, but it didn’t become a regular part of many of our lives until 2020. Today, it’s clear that this modern luxury is here to stay, and Chase’s first food delivery credit card is designed to reward you when you decide to order in.

The DoorDash Rewards Mastercard® has no annual fee and a recommended credit score of 670.

But is it a good fit for you? Here’s everything you need to know.

DoorDash Rewards Mastercard pros and cons

DoorDash Rewards Mastercard welcome offer

The current, standard welcome offer on the DoorDash card is an interesting one.

THE POINTS GUY

With it, you’ll receive a free year of DashPass (a $96 value) for you and one authorized user, giving you both benefits like unlimited $0 delivery fees, 5% DoorDash credits back on pickup orders and member-only offers.

If you can maximize the value of your DashPass membership, this offer value is comparable to what we expect from most cash-back cards without an annual fee.

As a cardholder, you’ll get special offers and benefits, including 10% off one convenience, grocery, alcohol, retail or DashMart order every month (maximum discount of $15 each month; ends Dec. 31).

You’ll also get perks like trip cancellation insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty protection.

In addition to the benefits unique to this card, you’ll receive World Elite Mastercard benefits such as a monthly $5 DoorDash credit as an eligible DashPass member and a $5 Lyft credit after taking three rides in one calendar month.

Earning cash back on the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard

On top of earning bonus rewards on your DoorDash purchases, this card rewards you for all your dining and grocery spending. You’ll earn:

While these aren’t necessarily bad earning rates, they aren’t special. Several of our favorite cash-back and dining cards have earning rates similar to or better than what you’ll get with the DoorDash card.

Once you’ve racked up some rewards, you can be like TPG writer Ryan Wilcox and use them to pay for part or all of a DoorDash or Caviar order.

DOORDASH

You can also redeem them for gift cards or opt for the traditional route and get cash back — either as a statement credit or direct deposit into your bank account.

Which cards compete with the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard?

The DoorDash Rewards Mastercard is far from the only card that earns bonus rewards on food purchases. You may want to consider a different card if you spend much of your budget on anything other than DoorDash:

If you want to earn travel rewards on your dining purchases: The American Express® Gold Card earns 4 points per dollar at restaurants (including takeout and delivery in the U.S.) and U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in purchases each year, then 1 point per dollar). For more details, check out our full review of the Amex Gold.If you want to earn cash back on your dining and entertainment purchases: The Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card has no annual fee (see rates and fees) and allows you to earn more on your everyday spending with a wider range of bonus categories. For more details, check out our full review of the SavorOne card.If you want to earn more cash back on all your purchases: The Chase Freedom Unlimited® earns the same as the DoorDash card on dining (3% cash back), plus 1.5% on all other purchases, so you may earn more cash back overall with this card. For more details, check out our full review of the Freedom Unlimited.

Is the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard worth it?

If you order through DoorDash or Caviar frequently and prefer the simplicity of earning cash-back rewards, you may enjoy having this card. However, its earning structure isn’t remarkable. Even if the DoorDash perks appeal to you, remember that some other Chase cards offer a complimentary DashPass membership and earn 3 points per dollar spent on DoorDash purchases.
