Technology continues to make rapid advancements across every industry, and the world of hospitality is just getting to appreciate the benefits. A hotel management software has gone quite a way in aiding hoteliers in enhancing the way their businesses operate, and there is no doubt about its transformational impact.

Modern hotel management systems can help you streamline the administrative processes and enhance the efficiency of the business’s operations. Hotels can easily improve efficiency with the Amenitiz Hotel PMS, among other software. It is simple to see why most hotel managers believe using a good management system is vital to their business.

Here are five ways a hotel can benefit from having good functionality and management tools:

1. Improved customer service

With a good management system in place, your staff will have all the information they need at their fingertips to provide excellent customer service. All the guest information will be stored in one central location, making it easy to access and update. This includes contact information, arrival and departure dates, room preferences, and special requests.

The staff can quickly retrieve this information and use it to provide personalized service to make your guests feel valued.

2. Streamlined operations

A management system can help to streamline your hotel’s operations, making them more efficient and effective. All the information about your guests, rooms, and bookings will be stored in one location, making it easy to access and update.

3. Enhanced security

When all your hotel’s information is accessible from one location, it is easier to track who has access to it. You can set up different access levels so that only authorized staff members can view or edit sensitive information. This will help protect your guests’ privacy and reduce the risk of data breaches.

4. Increased profitability

A PMS system can help increase a hotel’s profitability in many ways. First, it can help you to optimize room rates and yield management strategies. This means that you can maximize revenue by charging the right price for each room at the right time.

Secondly, a good system can help reduce costs by streamlining operations and automating tasks. This includes things like automatic billing and invoicing, saving you time and money. Additionally, a good management system can help increase occupancy rates by making it easier to market the hotel and manage bookings.

5. Improved decision-making

A good management system can help you make better decisions about your hotel’s operations. Managers can access detailed reports and analytics that can provide insights into your guests, bookings, and revenue. With this information, you can identify areas to improve your hotel’s operations and make decisions that will increase your profits.

Bottom line

These are just a few ways that a hotel can benefit from having good functionality and management tools. When choosing a management system for your hotel, it is important to consider your specific needs. There are various systems on the market, so ensure that you find one that best suits your hotel’s operations.

How to maximize points and miles on Mother’s Day purchases

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Spring is blooming, and that means Mother’s Day is right around the corner. It’s this Sunday, May 8 — so if you haven’t ordered your flowers or picked out a gift yet, time is running short.

While it’s obviously not the main priority, you can earn bonus points or cash back if you play your cards right. Here are four strategies to maximize your Mother’s Day purchases.

Want more credit card news and travel advice from TPG? Sign up for our free daily newsletter.

In This Post

Earn up to 30 miles per dollar on flowers

If you’re ordering flowers online and can secure a last-minute delivery slot, you can earn a hefty haul of bonus miles on your purchase. All you need to do is click through to the major flower websites via the following links:

1-800-Flowers: Earn 7 Alaska Airlines miles per dollar.1-800-Flowers: Earn 10 American Airlines miles per dollar.1-800-Flowers: Earn 3 JetBlue TrueBlue points per dollar.1-800-Flowers: Earn 30 Membership Rewards points (or 30% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.1-800-Flowers: Earn 7 Southwest Rapid Rewards points per dollar.1-800-Flowers: Earn 30 United miles per dollar.FTD: Earn 9 Alaska Airlines miles per dollar.FTD: Earn 12 American Airlines miles per dollar.FTD: Earn 20 Delta SkyMiles per dollar.FTD: Earn 15 Membership Rewards points (or 15% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.FTD: Earn 20 United MileagePlus miles per dollar.ProFlowers: Earn 12 Alaska Airlines miles per dollar.ProFlowers: Earn 12 American Airlines miles per dollar.ProFlowers: Earn 12 Delta SkyMiles per dollar.ProFlowers: Earn 10 Membership Rewards points (or 10% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.ProFlowers: Earn 20 United MileagePlus miles per dollar.Teleflora Flowers: Earn 3 Alaska Airlines miles per dollar.Teleflora Flowers: Earn 4 American Airlines miles per dollar.Teleflora Flowers: Earn 10 Membership Rewards points (or 10% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.Teleflora Flowers: Earn 30 United MileagePlus miles per dollar.UrbanStems: Earn 7 Alaska Airlines miles per dollar.UrbanStems: Earn 10 American Airlines miles per dollar.UrbanStems: Earn 3 Membership Rewards points (or 3% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.UrbanStems: Earn 5 United MileagePlus miles per dollar.

Note that flower purchases don’t trigger common category bonuses, so you’ll want to pay with a card that offers the best return for everyday spending, such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited or Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

Earn miles shopping for gifts

Flowers aren’t your only opportunity to pick up some extra points or miles. You can also use online shopping portals to earn bonus rewards on other gifts. Keep in mind, that the miles you earn here are in addition to the points and miles you earn for paying with a rewards credit card.

Several popular retailers are offering boosted earning rates in honor of the holiday, including:

Macy’s>4 American Airlines miles per dollar.2 Membership Rewards points (or 2% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.5% cash back with TopCashback.Adidas>8 American Airlines miles per dollar.10 Membership Rewards points (or 10% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.2% cash back with TopCashback.Under Armour>10 American Airlines miles per dollar.8 Membership Rewards points (or 8% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.5% cash back with TopCashback.Saks Fifth Avenue>3 JetBlue TrueBlue points per dollar.2 Membership Rewards points (or 2% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.3% cash back with TopCashback.Remember to use the up-to-$50 statement credit from your The Platinum Card® from American Express. Enrollment is required for select benefits.Bloomingdale’s>3 JetBlue TrueBlue points per dollar.2 Membership Rewards points (or 2% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.4% cash back with TopCashbackBed Bath & Beyond>2 American Airlines miles per dollar.3 JetBlue TrueBlue points per dollar.4 Membership Rewards points (or 4% cash back) per dollar via Rakuten.4% cash back with TopCashback

Your best bet would be to use a shopping portal aggregator site like Cashback Monitor to compare returns and help determine which portal to use for a particular retailer.

Some shopping programs even allow you to earn bonus points and miles for in-store shopping — like this set of retailers through Alaska’s portal. You’ll need to link your credit card and activate offers individually to earn rewards for in-store shopping.

Earn points on brunch

If you plan on treating your mother to brunch — whether it be dining out or ordering in — make sure to pay with a credit card that will award you bonus points on dining. Here are some of the best cards to consider:

American Express® Gold Card – 4 Membership Rewards points at restaurants for an 8% return.American Express® Green Card – 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar at restaurants for a 6% return.Chase Sapphire Reserve – 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar at restaurants for a 6% return.Chase Sapphire Preferred Card – 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar at restaurants for a 4% return.

The information for the Amex Green Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

You can double dip on these meals by making your reservation or placing your order through the app Seated. It offers up to 30% back in rewards on top of what you earn with your dining credit card. Then, you can potentially earn even more miles if the restaurant participates in a dining rewards network.

In addition to the rewards listed above, dining credit cards could help you get exclusive access to reservations at certain restaurants and free or discounted food delivery.

Save with promo codes and offers

Several retailers participating in online shopping portals are also currently featured in some Amex and Chase Offers. So, you may be able to save on your Mother’s Day purchases and still earn bonus miles.

For instance, there are currently Amex Offers for 1-800-Flowers and Teleflora purchases — both of which participate in online shopping portals. And Chase Offers has 1-800-Flowers, as well, and both have offers for brands that sell chocolates and other gifts.

Plus, you may be able to save even more by applying a promo code to your order.

Just be sure to read the fine print. Sometimes, orders must be placed through a specific link to qualify for an Amex Offer. Similarly, certain promo codes may disqualify your order from earning extra rewards through Amex Offers or an online shopping portal.

Eligibility for these offers is limited. Enrollment is required in the Amex Offers section of your account before redeeming.

Bottom line

There are many ways to earn valuable points and miles when you make your Mother’s Day purchases. If you’re strategic, you can potentially double or even triple dip on your rewards. Just be sure to order your gifts soon so they arrive in time!

10 Ways to Immerse Yourself in Local Culture

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

10 Ways to Immerse Yourself in Local Culture

While most families travel to a destination and stick to tourist activities, there’s a way of travel that is so much more rewarding; journeys that encourage creativity, reflection, and intercultural learning. It’s not boring – in fact, it’s the opposite – a true, joyful way to expand your family’s worldview and have fun. It’s a form of slow travel, where you get off the beaten path and explore the local culture. Whether you are in a destination for a weekend, or several months, there are many things you can do to dig deeply into the culture – and live like a local.

immersing in the culture of local market in chichicastenango, guatemala

How to Immerse Yourself in Local Culture

Do your research

Before you go, read up about the history, language, culture, and customs of a place. Read about what school children do there, and how they play, learn, and live. Read books about the destination, as well as by authors from there. This is especially important with children’s books, as even the art can be different than what you’re used to – and provide a glimpse into the colors, thoughts, and words of a culture. Watch movies from the destination, listen to internet radio from there, and cook some of the cuisine (there are a plethora of international recipe websites you can discover online). Talk about the destination and culture at the dinner table, in the car, at bedtime – infuse your lives with these joyful experiences, tastes, sounds, and visions.

Learn the Language

Nothing can gain you entrée into another culture as much as learning the local language – or at least making the attempt. Make it a family game, before you go – put post-it notes on everything in your house, written with the names in the destination language. Not only will you gain vocabulary, but you’ll be slowly gaining language mastery. When you’re there, be respectful and try to speak the language as much as possible. People will be extra-friendly, for your attempts.

Rent a home or apartment

You’ll be living like locals, and probably have cultural informants in your neighbors and homeowners. Ask them for their favorite places to eat, shop, and play. You will get When we were staying on Loch Ness, the homeowner not only told us where to pick the best wild blackberries and rhubarb (thus ensuring we had fresh fruit desserts the whole time we were there), but also the hidden treasures of the area, including a little known waterfall, best grocery, family-friendly pub, and where to see cavorting dolphins at dusk. You might also have a yard to play in, a beach to explore, and local cafes and playgrounds. Take advantage of living like a local to explore the local culture, from the inside.

Shop local

Visit the local markets and grocery stores, and learn what locals eat. Cook it at home, utilizing fresh, local ingredients. Ask everyone you buy from what their favorite recipes are, and what they do with the ingredients. I asked the fishmonger at the Kenmare, Ireland market his favorite thing to do with fresh fish. We’re still making my adaptation of his recipe! Discover new flavors and ingredients – be brave! You might discover that you just LOVE spicy dried squid, or crazy-colored candy, or a unique beverage. If you can visit food or street festivals, even better –eat your way through Central America!

A man selling some fish in a local market

Visit the local library

Ascertain the schedule for children’s activities, and then go to them. You’ll all learn what it’s like for kids to read and play – and possibly make new friends. Story hours, art activities, reading clubs, teen poetry slams – all of these happen regularly at local libraries. Before you go, ask if you can donate new books from your home country. It’s worth space in the luggage to donate some of your favorite books to libraries, especially if they have ESL programs.

Make new friends

Set this up beforehand, with a social hospitality network like tripping.com or Couchsurfing, or with interest-based groups (homeschooling, sports, etc.). Arrange for a playdate at a local park, or to meet each other for shared meals. You might visit their house and enjoy a local meal, and then later, open your home to them and share the cuisine from where you’re from. This is a great possibility in Central America since people are so friendly. When we were in Ireland, we met fellow homeschoolers and did just that. Not only did we learn how Irish families lived (and played with their pets and brushed their horses), ate dinner together, and learned a new card game, but the next week, we hosted them and shared one of our favorite meals from home, and our favorite card game. Kids love to play – make sure to schedule playtime with new friends.

Take classes

This could be cooking, salsa dancing, how to wash elephants in Laos, surfing, diving, or Mayan rituals. Explore what the destination is famous for, and then learn all about it. You’ll gain a new appreciation for an aspect of the local culture that most travelers don’t experience. And, lifelong skills that the whole family can enjoy.

Volunteer

Whether at an animal shelter or at a library, digging a village well, or reading to elders, volunteering is a great way to learn the local culture and help locals, in the process. Organizations like the Muskoka Foundation match up your special skills with needs from where you’re going. If you can spend a day or two helping others, you’ll gain so much more than you give – everyone benefits, and you can make a difference in the local culture.

Listen to the music

Visit a pub, marimba concert, café, church, or festival. Extra points if you’re visiting a place while a music festival is going on –spend your time listening and learning what is popular there. Buy cds from local musicians to support their work, and bring the sounds of the culture home with you. One of my most cherished souvenirs from Scotland is a cd from a family we spent the afternoon with, in Glen Affric. They have a sound studio, host musicians from all over the world, and sing themselves.

Get off the beaten path

Whether it is visiting very small, local museums, finding out the locals’ only places to hang out, or participating in local customs and sports, getting off the beaten path (thanks to suggestions from your new friends) has never been easier. You might take a boat ride with a local fisherman and see an incredible sunrise, or visit a lab of a local scientist and learn all about his work. You might rent a sailboat (with a friendly crew) for several days, visit the islands of the Caribbean, learn to scuba dive and fishing, and enjoy the different perspectives on life in each of the Central American countries. Whatever you do, ask the locals for the best things to eat, see, read, listen to, and experience – you’ll truly encounter local culture this way. And, your vacation won’t be just a vacation anymore – it will be a window to another world.

Lots of countries loosening COVID-19 restrictions as May begins

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

This weekend is just four weeks before the Memorial Day holiday kicks off what’s expected to be the busiest travel summer travel season of the pandemic. The new month brings a slew of major COVID-19 restrictions being relaxed at key international destinations.

TPG continues to track the reopening plans of countries globally and places you can visit with no COVID-19 restrictions. With so many rules going away, we want to take a moment to highlight some of changes taking effect this weekend.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.

Greece

Sunday marks a major change for this immensely popular European vacation destination. With the start of May, Greece officially suspends all of its COVID-19 entry requirements.

Previously, the country had required visitors age five and older to show proof they were fully vaccinated or show a negative COVID-19 test. Now those requirements are over, at least for the busy summer travel months.

Related: 7 things no one tells you about the Greek islands

The country still has an indoor mask-wearing requirement in place, but that is expected to only last until June 1. Greece may prove to be a popular destination for international travelers with its historic sites in major cities like Athens and its spectacular islands

New Zealand

After more than two years with its borders closed to virtually all of the world, New Zealand takes its biggest step yet when it comes to international travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. New Zealand spent billions of dollars to keep its tourism sector afloat as the industry was shuttered over the last couple years.

Now, weeks after Australian visitors were allowed into the country, New Zealand will welcome international visitors from visa-waiver countries like the U.S. for the first time starting May 1.

Entry restrictions will be tight for U.S. visitors, with three tests required: a pre-departure test, which can include either a PCR test within 48 hours of departure or a supervised rapid antigen test within 24 hours of departure to the country.

Upon landing in New Zealand, travelers will receive a pack of two rapid COVID-19 tests, which they’ll be expected to take on the first and fifth or sixth days in the country.

Airlines are restoring direct service from the U.S. to New Zealand over the coming weeks and months, as travel to a country that is a bucket list destination for many becomes an option for the first time since early 2020.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is another destination that will kick off the month of May by welcoming its first non-resident, overseas visitors in a long time.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) began welcoming flights from overseas earlier this spring, but there was a key caveat: only residents were allowed in.

(Photo by Clint Henderson/The Points Guy)

Visitors and residents can travel to Hong Kong from other international locations, but they face stiff COVID-19 requirements upon arrival. The government’s “test and hold” program mandates that travelers undergo a PCR test, and then quarantine for seven days at a government-approved hotel.

Related: Here are places that dropped COVID-19 restrictions in March

Hong Kong’s government will also place temporary bans on airline routes if five or more passengers (or 5% of the flight) tests positive for COVID-19.

Thailand

Over the course of the pandemic, TPG has reported on the evolving processes for tourists to get into Thailand, which have included some elaborate schemes, from the country’s “Test and Go” option to its “Sandbox” approach, which allowed participating visitors to roam freely in designated parts of the country for several days before being allowed to travel throughout the kingdom.

Thailand has made a series of changes to its entry protocols in recent months in hopes of encouraging tourism. With the start of May though, things are a lot simpler.

Travelers who are vaccinated face no testing requirements. On top of that, unvaccinated visitors have a pretty simple choice, too: get tested before departure or quarantine upon arrival.

Related: Best ways to get to Thailand using points and miles

Turks and Caicos

Visitors to the Caribbean destination of Turks and Caicos will no longer face COVID-19 testing or insurance requirements as the month of May begins.

Switzerland

Switzerland drops all of its COVID-19 entry requirements, effective May 2.

CDC Warnings

With the exception of Turks and Caicos, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists each of these countries as Level 3, “high” levels of COVID-19 according to its Travel Health Notices. That Level 3 rating applies to more countries than any other rating level though, and the United States is among those listed at Level 3. Turks and Caicos is listed at Level 2, “moderate” risk.

Bottom line

Many countries are making changes to their entry requirements just as summer is approaching and demand for international travel is spiking. If you’ve got a trip booked overseas, it’s a good idea to keep checking the requirements in the country you’re visiting, because as we’ve seen time and again during the pandemic that the rules can change at any moment.

At the same time, the wave of changes as the month of May gets underway is a good indication that if the protocols change at your destination there’s decent chance they’re changing to restrictions being lifted.
