One of the most suitable places for a relaxing and calming solo trip is the island of Nantucket, which is 30 miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

While it is known as a vibrant and trendy summer vacation destination, Nantucket is also a dream trip spot for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and for people who want to get away from the hustle-bustle of the big city.

You may be nervous about going to an island all by yourself, especially if you are new to solo traveling, but the truth is that Nantucket is one of the friendliest and safest destinations to choose for such an endeavor.

You can enjoy the peace and quiet and almost complete solitude on the island, or you can mix with the crowds and have fun in Nantucket, no matter whether you are traveling alone or not.

This New England Island is among the most picturesque spots on the east coast. You can explore all day without ever getting bored of the beaches, ocean views, the unadulterated landscapes, and the historic shingle-style cottages and blooming gardens.

How to get to Nantucket

You can fly to Nantucket Memorial Airport or get on the ferry from Hyannis Port in Cape Cod. There is a traditional ferry and a high-speed passenger ferry available to and from the island on a regular basis. The distance from the mainland is only about 30 miles, so you can enjoy a trip which is either an hour or two hours and 15 minutes long to get there.

There are also some affordable plane tickets which you can book for weekdays or out of the peak of the summer season to fly into Nantucket as well.

Where to stay in Nantucket

You can book a hotel room in the town or any other neighborhood on the island. But you can expect to have to pay a fee starting from $150 for a bed without a bath in one of the most affordable hotels there.

Thankfully, there is a hostel in Nantucket, and there are also a wide variety of short-term rental residences available both off and during high season. You can choose the one which fits your preferences and budget. The earlier you book your accommodations, the better.

What to explore alone in Nantucket?

Nantucket may be a small island, which is only 14 miles long and from 3 to 5 miles wide, but it has so many places and attractions that are worth seeing so that you can keep yourself busy every day.

But it is also the perfect vacation destination if you want to spend all day long in bed or relax without doing anything.

If you prefer to spend your holiday on the beach, you are in the right place. Nantucket has over 80 miles of beaches and is known for having some of the best ones in the country.

There are beaches suitable for all tastes, ages, and preferences. The northern ones are more family-friendly with warmer and calmer water; the southern ones are a better choice for surfers and for adventurers. The eastern and northernmost ones are more isolated and quieter, suitable for a more private and solemn experience.

If you are into history, architecture, or simply like to explore new places, then you are in luck because Nantucket is one of the best-preserved historic towns in New England.

You can take a stroll through downtown Nantucket and walk through the cobblestone streets to see some unique historic houses, colonial mansions, and buildings from the 17th century on.

The island also has three of the oldest and still functioning lighthouses which are absolutely beautiful and worth visiting, especially during sunrise or sunset.

Thanks to the local authorities and conservation organizations, Nantucket has very well preserved wildlife. You can go on a tour through the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, where you can enjoy watching the wildlife such as deer, raptors, seals, shorebirds, and even white sharks. Along with the animals, you can enjoy walking through the largest red cedar savannah in New England and looking at the other typical wild plants, trees, and flowers there.

Another place to take a leisurely and relaxing stroll in the Sconset Bluff Walk. It is a walking path in the eastern village Siasconset, which the locals call Sconset for short. The charming village has some of the most beautiful gray weathered shingle-style cottages, covered with pink and red roses crawling on the trellis and surrounded by the most charming old-fashioned gardens.

The path is made of white seashells and will take you through the village and market to the bluffs or the Siasconset beach. While you are there, you can visit the easternmost lighthouse on the island – the Sankaty Head Light and enjoy an incredible view.

If you like museums, exhibitions, and other similar venues, then you are in luck because there are some unique ones on Nantucket. The ones to add to your solo trip to-do list include the Whaling Museum, the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum, the Lightship Basket Museum, the Maria Mitchell Association, Loins Observatory, The Artists’ Association, and many more.

Iceland Lifts Coronavirus Restrictions, Encourages People To Get Infected

We’re increasingly seeing countries learn to live with coronavirus, recognizing that the situation we’re in now is likely the new normal. Iceland is the latest country to lift all coronavirus related restrictions, including for travel. But Iceland is taking it a step further than other countries.

Iceland lifts all COVID-19 restrictions on Friday

Iceland’s Minister of Health has announced that the country will be lifting all COVID-19 pandemic restrictions as of Friday, February 25, 2022. This includes both restrictions within the country and at the border, meaning that it’ll be just like pre-coronavirus in terms of rules and restrictions.

All rules regarding limitations on social gatherings and school operations, as well as quarantine requirements for those infected by COVID-19, are being removed. Additionally, no disease prevention measures will be in place at the border, regardless of vaccination status.

As the Minister of Health describes this:

“We can truly rejoice at this turning-point, but nonetheless I encourage people to be careful, practice personal infection prevention measures and not to interact with others if they notice symptoms.”

This decision is based on a recommendation from the country’s Chief Epidemiologist, who explains that there have been between 2,100 and 2,800 infections diagnosed daily, but serious illness has not increased proportionally.

Iceland has a population of around 368,000 people. 110,000 people are confirmed to have already tested positive for coronavirus, and based on antibody testing it’s estimated that another 110,000 people have been infected without being diagnosed.

Nope, this isn’t clickbait. As Iceland’s government explains in a statement, the way to get widespread resistance to COVID-19 is through having as many people as possible be infected with the virus, since vaccines aren’t enough:

“Widespread societal resistance to COVID-19 is the main route out of the epidemic. To achieve this, as many people as possible need to be infected with the virus as the vaccines are not enough, even though they provide good protection against serious illness.”

I don’t think they’re literally suggesting having someone you know with COVID-19 cough all over you. However, the country’s position is basically that you should live your life and get infected, because that gets us out of this mess. Of course presumably those most vulnerable should avoid getting infected, given the risk of serious illness.

I think it’s important to recognize that Iceland’s government has been highly respected during the pandemic in terms of managing the virus. Throughout the pandemic the country has taken a responsible, science-based approach toward reopening borders.

And while the concept of the government saying “as many people as possible need to be infected with the virus as the vaccines aren’t enough” might sound strange, I’m also not really in a position to judge that.

I will say that in general I’m thrilled to see more countries lifting restrictions. Is coronavirus serious? Of course. But it’s also here to stay, and I think we’ve learned in the past two years that the virus isn’t going anywhere.

Bottom line

Iceland is not only lifting all travel restrictions as of Friday, but the country is also saying that “as many people as possible need to be infected with the virus as the vaccines aren’t enough.” We’ve seen quite a few countries lift coronavirus-related restrictions, but Iceland is taking it a step further with its statement about getting infected.

Getting into the Philippines

As with most countries around the globe, COVID-19 has made international travel quite gloomy. But COVID aside, entry into the Philippines is relatively easier as compared to its neighbors in Southeast Asia. Foreigners are typically given a 30 days tourist visa waiver which can be extended up to 36 months. 

When applying for a tourist visa into the Philippines, some of the key requirements are the following:

Passport or travel document that is valid for six months or more beyond the intended period of stayPassport-sized photosFor temporary visitors, return or onward journey ticketsBank statements

Accommodation

Accommodations in the Philippines have a wide range of prices, depending on location and what type of room you’re looking for. Those in key business districts such as Makati and Bonifacio Global City in Metro Manila tend to be pricier, but there are more affordable options in the fringes, or in other cities. 

Some of the key sites that you can check for deals for accommodation are Booking.com and Agoda. But there are also a lot of Airbnb options that you can check out.

Moving Around 

The Philippines is quite infamous for traffic and jam packed mass transportation options. Moving around the city, you would see public utility vehicles in the form of jeepneys, city buses, vans, and taxis. Within neighborhoods, you would see tricycles or passenger motorcycles with an attached passenger cab.

For ride hailing apps, you only have Grab for cars, and Angkas for motorcycles. You’d most likely use Grab, but Angkas can be a lifesaver if you need to go somewhere really quick in a busy day.

Payments

While the pandemic has jumpstarted digital payments in the country, a lot of transactions, especially in public transportation and in small establishments would still be done through cash. That’s why it’s essential to know about where you can go for a money changer so you can cash on hand.

Dining

Food and beverage (F&B) is among the biggest components (if not the biggest one) of the Philippine retail market. There is an abundance of shopping malls, retail strips, and even standalone food stalls in major cities. Within communities, there are bound to be a lot of food shops too and at very low prices at that. You won’t run out of food options whether you’re craving for local food or for international ones.

And when you want to have a bottle or two, there are many decent bars especially in key areas within major cities.

Internet Connectivity

Over the past few years, internet connectivity has been steadily improving. Dominated by two major telecommunication service providers, you can choose between Globe and Smart. A third telco operator, Dito Telecommunity, is also starting to offer connectivity but still has limited coverage as of writing so you’re better off with the first two options. 

Wi-Fi is normally offered in accommodations and this is something you might want to check out for when going to more remote locations as mobile internet may not be as reliable.

Enjoy the Philippines

With over 7,600 islands, the Philippines really has a lot to offer. Digital nomads like you would find it charming and welcoming, and you would definitely enjoy its many local wonders.

While there are tons of awe-inspiring locales to visit from late March to the end of May or early June, I tend to look for places that reflect the spirit of the season, like Paris and Amsterdam. Or, I head to destinations that allow me to connect with nature, such as national parks and desert landscapes where you can hike before the summer heat sets in.

For many places, spring falls during a shoulder season, meaning you may find opportunities to save big on some trips. Don’t forget, though, that it’s also the prime time to visit other locations like theme parks and beaches as families and college students set out on spring break.
