United PlusPoints upgrades: Why you should reconsider spending more points to skip the waitlist

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with the latest information.

In 2019, United implemented PlusPoints as a replacement for Regional and Global Premier Upgrade awards when revamping its MileagePlus Premier program. United claims that PlusPoints offer greater flexibility, customization and fewer restrictions than the previous upgrade awards. However, currently, there is limited confirmed upgrade availability before departure.

Today, we’ll look into United long-haul upgrades and why you might not want to skip the waitlist.

United’s upgradable PZ fare class

Looking at United’s long-haul flight availability throughout its international network, there is little, if any, “PZ” fare class space on many routes. The “PZ” fare class indicates whether or not there is confirmed business upgrade availability using either PlusPoints (issued to Premier Platinum and Premier 1K members) or MileagePlus awards.

Historically, United has offered confirmed “PZ” upgrades to Polaris business class before departure when business “saver” award space is available.

When it came time to buy a ticket between London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Washington’s Dulles International Airport (IAD) for a spring trip, I saw plenty of business saver award inventory (in the IN fare class, which is expanded award space for Premier Platinum and Premier 1K members). However, my desired flight had no “PZ” availability. This means that I couldn’t confirm a seat in business class using my PlusPoints at the time of booking.

In my book, removing these desirable “PZ” fares is a letdown, especially after working so hard to maintain Premier 1K status.

How to upgrade a United flight with no PZ upgrade space

Essentially, there were two PlusPoint upgrade options:

Confirm an upgrade to Premium Plus now (for 20 Plus Points) and remain on the waitlist for Polaris business class for 20 additional Plus Points (40 in all).Skip the waitlist using 100 PlusPoints and confirm a seat in Polaris business class now (an option reserved for Premier 1K members).

The latter option was not appealing given that I needed to spend 100 PlusPoints for an upgrade that should only require 40 PlusPoints. Premier Platinum members receive 40 PlusPoints each year they qualify, while Premier 1K members receive 320 PlusPoints each year they qualify (40 PlusPoints after meeting the Premier Platinum requirements + 280 PlusPoints after meeting the Premier 1K requirements).

For most 1K members, 100 PlusPoints would equate to nearly a third of their annual allotment.

As a result, I opted to confirm an upgrade to Premium Plus and waitlist for an upgrade to Polaris business class.

And then, within ten minutes of purchasing my ticket, I received this text message from United:

I was perplexed about whether I had really gotten this lucky, but yes, after ten minutes of being on the waitlist for Polaris business class, my upgrade from economy to Polaris cleared using a total of 40 PlusPoints, not the 100 PlusPoints to skip the waitlist. This saved me a ton of PlusPoints and gave me the exact same Polaris business-class seat as if I’d spent 100 PlusPoints.

While the Skip Waitlist feature could’ve been an effective tool to confirm a Polaris upgrade (without “PZ” space available), the number of PlusPoints required made it an unappealing option in most cases. I could envision someone using so many PlusPoints when there’s a very compelling reason to burn them, like an impending expiration. In this case, you may consider splurging for the upgrade confirmation — but my experience shows that you may not need to.

You are not limited to using the skip waitlist feature at booking, so you may consider trying to waitlist your upgrade instead. However, the Skip Waitlist feature is only available on select flights at least 30 days before departure.

Bottom line

When booking your next United flight, chances are high that you’ll see no confirmed upgrades to Polaris business class using PlusPoints or miles. This gives you the impression that to secure an upgrade, you will need to burn your awards and go with the Skip Waitlist option. Don’t be fooled. If there’s enough availability (and especially if the flight has saver award inventory in the IN or I fare classes), your upgrade may be confirmed in short order, just like mine — even if you’re not seeing “PZ” fare space.

E240 — formaldehyde. This may lead to oncology.E237 — sodium formate.  May lead to fatal consequences.E238 — calcium formate. Have an extremely negative effect on skin health and may provoke liver or kidney disease.E284 — boric acid. Has a high level of toxicity.E285 — sodium tetraborate. Causes problems with the digestive system.Е216 — para-hydroxybenzoic acid, propyl ether. It may increase the risk of breast cancer in women, and also lead to infertility in men.Е217 — p-hydroxybenzoic acid, propyl ether, sodium salt. It negatively affects the neurovascular system and can lead to the formation of malignant tumors.

However, remember that any system sometimes fails, and if the European Union allows the use of an additive, this does not mean that it is harmless. Therefore, if you have doubts about certain elements of the product, take the time to find out what they are.

Harmless and beneficial food additives

Natural additives are able to provide the body with benefits and at the same time do almost no harm. Their use can improve the functioning of the body, boost immunity, and also prevent many diseases. Let us look at them in more detail.

Vegetables and fruits provide the body with minerals, vitamins, fiber, and plant compounds, which in turn have a positive effect on all vital systems.Oily fish contains omega 3. This element helps to significantly improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system and reduce the risk of related diseases.Fruits of leguminous plants provide your body with soluble fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. The above elements, as a rule, are the main one’s vitamin manufacturers and cosmetics manufacturers look for.

What are emulsifiers and preservatives?

Emulsifiers and preservatives are used in order to maximize the life of a product while maintaining its useful properties. Many consumers are biased toward them, and some try to avoid them altogether. However, studies show that only a few of them are really capable of harming the body. In particular, this applies to such additives as E213, E214, E222, E223, E237.

They contain toxins that can accumulate in the body over time and have a devastating effect on it. Otherwise, this type of additive is usually harmless, and in some ways even useful, since they prevent food from spoiling and make it possible to fully obtain their useful properties. Many would like to see carcinogens and emulsifiers abandoned in general, however, today this is impossible. Without these additives, most foods will spoil before they reach the supermarket shelves, stores will start going empty, and mass starvation will soon overtake humanity.

As we can see now, E-additives can indeed be harmful, however, their overall threat turned out to be nowhere near as great as it is portrayed. In practice, neither product manufacturers nor their sellers are interested in harming you. E-additives tend to be added in exceptionally safe doses, and their truly dangerous representatives, as a rule, are banned immediately after their problem is established. However, we strongly advise you to be careful. Take your health responsibly, check the composition of the product that you have doubts about, monitor the quality of your diet and remember that everything is good in moderation. One pack of chips a week will not hurt your health, but even drinking too much water can kill you. Therefore, no matter what additives you are dealing with, always adhere to the measures of prudence.

British Airways To Replace Aging Boeing 777 Fleet

British Airways looking for Boeing 777 replacement

While British Airways has nicely been modernizing its long haul fleet with new Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s, the Boeing 777 is still the backbone of the carrier’s long haul fleet. The airline has nearly 60 Boeing 777s in its fleet, including 777-200ERs and 777-300ERs.

While the 777 is still a very capable jet, British Airways’ 777 fleet is among the oldest out there, at an average of nearly 20 years old. Nearly two-thirds of British Airways’ 777s were delivered in 2001 or earlier — specifically, the airline took delivery of a batch of these between 1997 and 2001, and then took delivery of the remaining jets between 2009 and 2021. The older ones are almost exclusively the 777-200ER variant.

With British Airways’ oldest Boeing 777s being nearly 30 years old, Bloomberg is reporting that parent company IAG is in discussions with both Airbus and Boeing over a new wide body aircraft order. As of now, we can only speculate as to which aircraft British Airways will select.

Which aircraft could British Airways order?

So, which aircraft will British Airways likely order to replace older Boeing 777-200s? British Airways has been modernizing its long haul fleet with new Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s — the airline flies the A350-1000, 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10.

I would think that British Airways would want to pick up more A350s or 787s. However, in the interest of being thorough, I should mention:

British Airways has 18 Boeing 777-9s on order, but those are larger aircraft; with the plane still not certified, I can’t imagine the airline would be looking to order more of those right now, especially as a 777-200ER replacementWhile the A330-900neo is another new long haul jet, I doubt British Airways is even considering ordering those planes, and further diversifying its long haul fleet

Logically speaking, in terms of both capacity and range, I have to imagine that British Airways might be looking to order either Airbus A350-900s or Boeing 787-9s:

British Airways currently has 18 Airbus A350-1000s on order (two of which are yet to be delivered), though the A350-900 seems like a more logical replacement for the 777-200ERBritish Airways currently has 18 Boeing 787-9s in its fleet, so an order top up seems logical; however, this would likely represent a slight decrease in capacity compared to the 777-200ERBritish Airways currently has 24 Boeing 787-10s on order (only seven of which have been delivered), and while that plane has great economics and capacity, it doesn’t have the same range as the smaller variants of the jet, limiting its usefulness for some key routes

My money would be on the 787-9 or A350-900, and I wouldn’t surprised to see British Airways finally add the latter to its fleet. Regardless of which aircraft British Airways selects, the improvement in emissions will be significant.

Could British Airways order more Boeing 787s?

Bottom line

British Airways’ Boeing 777 fleet is among the oldest out there, with dozens of the planes having been delivered in the late 1990s. The airline is now looking to replace some of these aircraft, and in particular, the 777-200ERs.

British Airways already has Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s in its fleet, so additional orders of those planes seems logical enough. Perhaps we’ll finally see British Airways order the A350-900, as it’s the only A350 or 787 variant that the airline doesn’t yet fly. I’m curious to see how this plays out…

Be aware that certain cards have a deadline for balance transfers, typically within 60, 90, or 120 days from account opening. After this deadline, issuers typically apply the standard APR to any transferred balances.

If the balance transfer limit on your new card is insufficient to accommodate all your existing balances, prioritize your cards based on the highest to lowest APR. Start by transferring the balance from the card with the highest APR, followed by the next highest, until you have consolidated the maximum allowed.

Paying your bill on time is also essential. Late payments result in fees that can offset the savings from consolidating your credit card debt. Moreover, falling behind on payments may lead to the loss of the introductory APR and the imposition of a penalty APR.

Bottom line
