This Spanish Community Is Offering Up To €15K To Digital Nomads To Move In

The Board of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura has allocated 2 million euros to sponsor up to 200 national or international digital nomads who want to relocate to this region.

If you don’t remember where it is, Extremadura is a Spanish region bordering Portugal, surrounded by mountains, forests, natural parks and lakes.

With this initiative, this community seeks to boost its economy by attracting high-spending, high-skilled professionals who can contribute to the creation of new local businesses.

But above all, the government wants to attract young people who can -somehow- help stop the population hemorrhage. Currently, Extremadura has the lowest population density in Spain, with 26 inhabitants per square kilometer.

“Extremadura offers a high quality of life. It is a natural paradise with exceptional gastronomy. Attracting these high-skilled professionals with international incomes will have a very positive impact on our economy. They will boost local consumption, enrich regional talent and create significant networks and opportunities,” said the Minister of Economy, Employment and Digital Transformation, Guillermo Santamaría.

Regarding infrastructure, Santamaría says the region has had some transportation issues, but in terms of communications, which is what digital nomads care about the most, the region can compete with major national cities.

“We are above the national average in fiber optic coverage with 93%, 97% in 4G mobile coverage and between 75% and 80% in 5G coverage.”

Requirements

Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, CaceresThe first and main requirement is that applicants can carry out their jobs exclusively online.Winners must have resided outside of Extremadura for at least six months before the date of their mandatory “registration of residency” in the region, known in Spanish as EmpadronamientoSelected individuals must commit to establishing their habitual residence in a community with less than 5,000 inhabitants for a minimum of two years.Non-Spanish applicants must hold a legal identification number.

Who Can Participate?

To be considered for the program, participants must prove their expertise as high-skilled professionals in the tech sector.

That being said, the scheme caters to both men and women, but the amount received will depend on their age.

Benefits

Men and women under 30 years old, will be initially awarded 10,000 euros once they are selected. Men older than 30 years old, will receive 8,000 euros.

Once the first two-year period has been completed, men and women under 30 years old will receive 5,000 euros, granted that they want to stay in the region for another year.

For their part, men older than 30 years old, who also want to stay in Extremadura for one more year, will get another 4,000 euros.

How to Participate?

The call will remain open until the 2 million euros have been designated to the right participants.

Other Spanish Regions Offering Opportunities to Digital Nomads

Galicia: The Galician government has just allocated 123,800 euros for a pilot program aiming at digital nomads able to create business opportunities in sparsely populated Galician villages.

Andalusia: This community has created “the First Rural Development Strategy of Andalusia, Horizon 2030,” looking to lure digital nomads to rural areas with few inhabitants.

Serra da Estrela

The Serra da Estrela region of Portgual is located about a three-hour drive southeast of Porto or about four hours northwest of the capital city of Lisbon.

It’s a scenic, yet curvy road, on highways that will lead visitors to a mountain escape.

Travelers should plan for at least a two-day getaway to truly connect with many of the local historic and natural highlights of the mountain range.

Here are a couple of places tourists should wander to go back in time at the Serra da Estrela.

Castelo Rodrigo

At an altitude of more than 2200 feet in the mountain range lies Castelo Rodrigo. The ruins of Cristóvão de Moura Palace are a main attraction in the area.

Every spring and summer weekend, the palace and surrounding sites come alive with historical characters from Cooperativa Artística da Raia Beirã who explain the history and help visitors connect back in time.

Visitors should also not miss the Church of Our Lady of Rocamador and learn about the strange legend of Marofa.

Cidadelhe

Cidadelhe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in a small village with only about 30 residents. However, it is those 30 people that truly hold the key to unlock much of the hidden history in the area.

The Palio de Cidadelhe was one of these mysterious hidden sites that was only known by the locals. However, today it is thankfully easy to find and connects visitors with the important history and culture of the area.

On the other hand, there are some ancient cave paintings that can only be found through assistance by a guide. You may want to connect with the local town council if you are interested in visiting this hidden doorway to the past.

Marialva

Marialva is another one of those historical villages in Serra da Estrela which are free for tourists to visit and connect to history.

Wandering past the citadel walls and entering the old town through the Porta do Anjo da Guarda will make visitors feel like they were one of the travelers on an early pilgrimage to the site.

Tourists can wander the 17th century city and explore the town hall and jail on approach to the town’s legendary Church of Santiago. Be sure to also not miss the Torre de Menagem and the Capela da Misericórdia, two true treasures of this town’s historic past.

Trancoso

Departing the castle, Trancoso is a place full of history. Visitors will find Poço do Mestre, Casas do Gato Preto, dos Arcos and Quartel-General Beresford, the Church of São Pedro and the Pillory as just a couple of places to walk around and feel the connection to the heritage of Portugal.

Those with Jewish roots will also uncover traces to their religion and traditions all over town. Estimates are that more than 200 of these connections exist all around the village.

Walking through the town of Rhyolite, Nevada, it’s easy to imagine what the wild west frontier mining town used to be like. You see, Rhyolite is a ghost town, and there are several of them to explore across the Nevada desert and hills.

About 150 years ago, Nevada was a much different travel destination than the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas and Reno today. It was a place travelers came to seek fortune and glory, way before Indiana Jones coined the phrase.

Travelers came to the Nevada desert either to mine for silver and gold or provide products and services to those miners and muckers. Yes, mucker is the right term for those early Nevada travelers. Today the only muckers you see are the sports teams from the Tonopah, Nevada high school.

Towns like Rhyolite swelled with visitors looking for their fortunes once the announcement of a gold or silver strike was announced. Once the ore was gone, so were they, seeking fortune and glory somewhere else.

The towns boomed and then were abandoned. Today they sit quietly in the Nevada desert waiting for tourists to connect with these frontier ghost towns.

The Jewel of the Bullfrog Mining District

Most ghost town aficionados, and Las Vegas locals, have heard of the town of Rhyolite. Located near Death Valley, and not too far from Sin City, Rhyolite was the center of action in 1905 as the heart of the Bullfrog Mining District.

With 50 saloons, 19 lodging houses and 16 different restaurants it even attracted steel magnate Charles M. Schwab who bought the entire mining district in 1906. The town continued to boom until the mines closed in 1910 and by 1920 there were only 14 residents in Rhyolite.

Today, Rhyolite is one of the many ghost towns to explore in Nevada.

Eldorado Canyon and the Techatticup Mine

Located about 45 minutes outside Las Vegas is Eldorado Canyon and the Techatticup Mine. This is a ghost town photographer’s dream.

According to Travel Nevada, these ghost towns were “debaucherous, bustling, rough-and-tumble townships, [where] shootouts and murders were so frequent during the 1880s.”

Today, the scenery is more likely to be a set for a wild west movie. It’s a picture perfect setting where visitors to the two ghost town areas can connect with the past, as well as today.

Former United States Army Fort

Located about an hour east of Carson City, in Northern Nevada, lies the ghost town that used to be a former United States Army frontier fort. Today it is better known as Fort Churchill State Historic Park.

A place on the frontier that was used to protect the country, today Fort Churchill is a place to connect with early military history before Nevada even became a state. Visitors can wander the ruins and even enjoy some spectacular stargazing after dark.

The Ghost Metropolis

For a more rural destination, check out the strangely named Metropolis, a ghost town located about 15 miles from Wells, Nevada.

Back in 1909, Pacific Reclamation Company decided to build a utopian town for their 7,500 employees that was self sufficient including an ambitious 40,000 acres of farms. Planning started in 1911 and unfortunately by 1913 the company was headed towards bankruptcy.

By 1947 nothing was left in the ghost town except about seven ranches. Now visitors can check out this ghost town that was planned as an ideal community for working Nevada families.

WTTC: Mexican Caribbean Has Become One Of The Fastest-Growing Tourist Destinations Worldwide

With a sustained growth of 10% in international arrivals over the last 3 years, Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean have become one of the fastest-growing destinations in the world, said Julia Simpson, The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) President.

The Mexican market has managed to maintain the loyalty of American and Canadian travelers, the ones fueling this growth.

As of today, Cancun International Airport (CUN) offers routes to 42 cities in the United States alone. This airport has become a strategic “global connection hub,” she said.

In a visit to the country, the executive told a group of businessmen that Mexico is no longer experiencing economic recovery from the pandemic but a growth surpassing 2019 figures.

According to Simpson, this phenomenon is been experienced by just a handful of countries at the moment. For this and other reasons, she placed the Mexican Caribbean as “a benchmark for world tourism.”

In reference to revenue, this destination is set to contribute over $264 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP), according to a study carried out by the WTTC.

The WTTC President and local hoteliers also discussed concerns regarding sargassum and how it has impacted the destination, especially the beaches of Quintana Roo. A potential hit by a strong hurricane was also discussed.

However, there’s good news for hoteliers and tourists alike. The Mexican Caribbean will see a sargassum-free summer according to a recent report.

Satellite images have revealed that a massive blob of algae that was heading to Mexico is now heading for southern Florida, reported the Quintana Roo Sargassum Monitoring Network Director, Esteban Amaro Mauricio.

Weather conditions in the Atlantic Ocean have changed making it posible for the destination to be sargassum-free summer starting in the second week of July.

Sargassum will still wash up on a few beaches including the “areas between Mahahual and Xcalak, the east coast of Cozumel, the south of Punta Nizuc, the Sian Ka’an reserve and Tulum.” But the rest will be clean.

Simpson also spoke of the importance of continuing with massive marketing campaigns and implementing environmental projects to stay ahead of regional competitors, which are also growing non-stop.

In fact, industry leaders participating at the annual Caribbean Travel Marketplace revealed that the Caribbean as a whole received 33.2 million travelers last year, up 14.3 percent compared to 2022.

“Other destinations breaking arrival and revenue records include Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Turks & Caicos, Belize and the Dominican Republic”
