10 Ways to Make Money Online

Whether you prefer couch potato strategies to grow your travel funds, or have reached the “oh crap” moment reviewing the actual costs of your dream trip, there are plenty of ways to fatten your wallet without even leaving the house.

If you think the only methods of freelance work require technical expertise, that's an absolute nope! As a non-techie person myself, I've used many of online earning strategies listed here to grow my trip savings. A surprising range of options exist, from teaching basic English online, to publishing an e-book, or simply selling your crap. Here are ten ways to earn money at home!

1. Teach English online

Fluency in the English language and an internet connection are all you need for the potential to earn tutoring English. Having a college or university degree helps, but possessing a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate will best improve your earnings and opportunities.

A TEFL or TESOL certificate simply proves your English fluency and is strongly recommended to get. TEFL is for those wanting to teach English abroad in any country, while TESOL is for those wishing to teach English in their home country to foreigners. These certificates require of finishing a course (either online or a classroom/online combination), with a final exam online. I've done the TESOL myself and it was easy to complete.

Reputable companies to complete TEFL courses include MyTEFL, TEFLPros, and BridgeTEFL. Reputable websites to teach English online include VIPKid, italki, QKids, and Cambly. Pay varies anywhere from $10-$40+ USD an hour, depending on education level and your work experience.

2. Find online freelance work

Online freelance work is not just for techies. We have a detailed step-by-step guide here on finding digital work locally and abroad. Here are example positions you can find:

Editing articles or textTranslatingVirtual assisting or customer supportVoiceoversCreating e-mail newsletters

Reputable freelance websites include Upwork and Fiverr. Most official sites should not charge a fee upfront, and instead often take a percentage of the successful job.

3. Make money when you spend money

You can get points and cash back on every purchase you make, simply by using the best travel rewards credit card. If you pay your bill each month, you'll get tons of points while paying no interest – which is basically like getting free money.

Last year, we had enough points for 2 round-trip flights between San Francisco and Sydney, simply by using a points credit card for every purchase.

Our top choice is the Chase Sapphire Preferred, which also has a huge welcome bonus of 60,000 points worth $750. You do have to hit the minimum spend of $4,000 in 3 months though, so if you want your points in time to go traveling again, you need to apply ASAP. It has a ton of other benefits too, like insurance included and no foreign transaction fees, which you can read about in our full review.

If you have no use for points, a cash back credit card might be a better option for you. You can compare your options over at CardRatings.

4. Sell the crap you don't need

Just about anyone can Marie Kondo their home from top to bottom. Even if you only have a handful of things to sell, collective efforts add up to inflate that bank account.

Selling platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or eBay are great places to start. For tips on how to sell your things, check our thorough guide here.

Our own”Marie Kondo” clear-out. This was actually the progress of selling ALL our things 7 years ago (no need to go this overboard!)

5. Write an e-book

Whether a fiction story or a how-to guide on any subject imaginable, e-books can be written by people with all levels of writing and publishing expertise. The great thing about this line of work is that writing an e-book costs little to no money upfront, and there are a plethora of publishers that accept complete novices.

The other fantastic thing about e-book publishing is that once your book is completed, it becomes indefinite passive income. After putting in the hours of writing, consumers can continually purchase your book long after you've published it. Here's a guide to get you started.

6. Use cashback sites

Before making any purchase, you should be checking cash back sites and apps. These sites partner with brands to give you cash back on the purchases you make both in-store and online, at no cost to you.

By simply using free cash back sites, we've personally earned $1,400 back over 5 years.

For in-store cash back, simply download and install the app, browse for offers from participating brands, and go shopping as usual. Buy products from the partner offers, then upload a picture of your receipt. Once verified, you'll get cash back credited to your account!

Here's our favorite in-store cash back apps:

Checkout 51 ($5 sign-up bonus! U.S. and Canada)Ibotta ($20 sign-up bonus! U.S. only)Fetch Rewards (U.S.)Cashrewards ($5 sign-up bonus! Australia only)

Online cash back is even simpler. First, create an account on the cash back website or app (listed below). Then click the link to the store you want to shop at. Once you pay, your purchase will be tracked, and your cash back will automatically be credited to your account.

Here's our favorite online cash back websites:

Ibotta (Up to $20 sign-up bonus! U.S. only)Rakuten ($10 sign-up bonus! U.S. and Canada)Swagbucks ($5 sign-up bonus! U.S., Canada, Australia, U.K.)Cashrewards ($5 sign-up bonus! Australia only)Shopback ($5 sign-up bonus! Australia only)

7. Start a blog, website, or Youtube channel

I'll be upfront here: starting a blog, website or Youtube channel is not a quick cash cow. But if you have the motivation and passion, why not launch a potential earning platform on a subject you love that might earn you some bucks?

Now, you may be worried that this requires technical expertise. It doesn't (though it helps). We have a detailed step-by-step guide on how to start a travel blog (though the points apply to any blog type), outlining the different ways you can make money. Setting up a Youtube channel is easily outlined here, with earning potentials coming from advertising.

8. Sell homemade products online

Handmade goods of all sorts can be sold on online platforms like Etsy. This doesn't involve setting up your own website – all you need is some goods to sell.

Peruse categories for ideas of what is out there. Items range hugely, from bookmarks and magnets, to knitted socks and framed posters. Seeking out this work can be a fun creative challenge within itself.

9. Become an online tutor (in any subject)

Math, geography, science, language and more – just about any subject in existence has a need for virtual tutors. This demand is only increasing, particularly as developing countries have internet access and a hunger to grow their education.

Hours can range from flexible to fixed, with set amount of lessons over time or a couple of one-off sessions. Upwork is a great place to create a profile with your skills and the type of tutoring required.

10. Slash your senseless spending!

A penny saved is a penny earned – and in our consumerist society, we often blatantly ignore this fact. Reviewing monthly sign-ups or subscriptions, avoiding spending temptation zones like malls, and dining out less are just quick tips to cut back. Curb your food waste, choose indoor or group hangouts over going out, and keep busy with non-commercial activities!

The Thrifty Gist

There are many non-techie ways to generate income from the comfort of homeTeaching English online is one of the most common and accessible means of at-home work. This usually requires a TEFL or TESOL certificate, so consider obtaining this ASAP from MyTEFL or TEFLPros, and seek out online work with sites like VIPKid.Job opportunities range from creative to online teaching or tutoring and can readily be found online on sites like UpworkAside from working, you should still be getting points or cash back on all your purchases with a high-earning rewards credit card, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred.Motivation is all that's needed to find a line of work that works for you!

Covid-19 Nightmare, Stimulus Checks, Nomads Travel, Diamond Industry

We bring you the best links about the Covid-19 nightmare we are all living through, an FAQ on the stimulus checks, how nomads travel these days, learn about the diamond industry, travel to Greece some day, suggestions on what to do now that you can not travel for real, a stimulus check calculator, how you can help people suffering in this pandemic crisis, an excellent article about one of the first school shootings, watch a dog jump into leaves, and so much more. And get this? I am doing this for a ridiculous amount of money when I don’t have to and I could sure do something else and help more people in my day job…been doing this for over seven years. Well, I hope I am doing my part to change the world. I guess. Or I am just insane…don’t answer this. Be well and virus free!

Brought to you by the amazing TBB Amazon link! This blog is published every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Except in major US Holidays. For now…

Major changes are coming to the blog. The virus is disrupting us all, more details on Wednesday.

I have no sponsors. This is a blog by one crazy dude who has been at it for seven and a half years. I can assure you it is NOT about the money that I continue! It is my baby and I blog what I want. And lately I have many anti Trump views because I am VERY angry pissed off for the rolling nightmare of Covid-19 and the way it was not taken seriously and the way it has been disastrously handled. If you are a Trump fan you would probably not enjoy my blog, you have been warned. But you can stay and get educated and even comment with some logical arguments if you can do that too. You all have a good week, stay inside, pray and support all the heroes out there.

COVID-19

We are starting off with a bang today: The President Is Trapped. Trump is utterly unsuited to deal with this crisis, either intellectually or temperamentally. This is a vicious well deserved beating. God help us all! Must read. I could excerpt the hell out of it but I won’t. We have lots to cover today.

Here is an interview with the Director of the Chinese CDC: Not wearing masks to protect against coronavirus is a big mistake. If only we could find them just for the medical personnel man! I think you will learn a lot from a source we don’t hear much from. After reading it I am scared to run outside!

Such talented writing. And gut wrenching. ‘Since I Became Symptomatic’.

I am on a roll today, another fascinatingly educational article: How Genetic Mutations Turned the Coronavirus Deadly. It is about tracing the path of the virus.

So far, there is no sign that the virus is becoming any more deadly or infectious—although neither is it becoming any less so. Near-stasis is typical for a new human pathogen. From an evolutionary perspective, SARS-CoV-2 is already doing a great job of reproducing itself. It’s therefore feeling little evolutionary pressure to change.

It is maddening to watch the half ass attempts to do this social distancing thing. I was advocating COMPLETE lockdowns/shutdowns when it became apparent that the virus was here circulating. The sooner we did this the sooner we can get back to normal. Instead, even today, we have governors still not on board with it which I find completely hideous. I saw a picture yesterday in a Florida beach where half was empty and half was full of people. The difference? It was the county line, WTF! This may get through to you: The Math Behind Social Distancing.

Amazing photography: The Great Empty.

Oh yes, so much bullshit everywhere. And of course we get BSers in this new viral world we are now living in. Please, Let’s Stop The Epidemic of Armchair Epidimeology. Yes, please! Ignore the people misconstruing their expertise and offering false certainty.

This doctor in West Michigan posted a video on Youtube and went viral. Oh, wait a minute. Maybe we should retire the phrase “going viral”? Just saying. Anyway, this is great, it sure changed the way I handle my groceries! PSA Safe Grocery Shopping in COVID-19 Pandemic.

I don’t mean to panic you guys but this is really scary: Global condom shortage looms.

I may have posted this before, I don’t remember. Every day feels like a Tuesday these days. 40 meaningful things to do when stuck at home in a pandemic. Which one is your favorite?

Late addition: Hey, I can not help it. Here is Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press: Hey President Trump: Her name is Gretchen Whitmer. You just lost Michigan &%$)&#@!

More, I just can’t help myself: Our Political Leadership Is Failing Us at Every Level. Must read, vicious beating of those who were supposed to protects us. How can you go from “15 cases and going down to 0” to over 140,000 and over 2.500 dead. I mean, WTF? How can you excuse this gigantic failure? I feel rage, this is hitting us all. And this phucking asshole has time to tweet about his TV ratings…his godamnPhucking TV Ratings. Who does that????

MILES & POINTS

HOT CREDIT CARD OFFERS: Two new offers on United credit cards, a personal for 60k and a Business one for up to 100k miles. The IHG Rewards Club card offering 140k points too, highest ever. Other credit cards offers that stand out for now are the 100k Southwest Performance Business card and the 100k Ink Business Preferred. In addition, there are personal and business offers for the 70k Amex Delta Skymiles Gold, 100k Platinum and 100k Reserve credit cards. For a standard workhorse card I recommend the 60k Chase Sapphire Preferred card. For a standard premium card I recommend the 50k Chase Sapphire Reserve card. For a standard 2% cash back card I recommend the Citi Double Cash card. Available with my links. Lets move on!

Newbie Tip: I try to have my credit cards’ statement dates close around the 5th of the month. And I sit down on the 6th or 7th of each month and pay them all. It is a routine I have been practicing for years decades. I have never paid a penny of interest on my credit cards. If you do pay interest on your credit card balances, well, thank you for helping us all travel for free! And stop it. The quicker the better. Find what works for you. Get a system down and follow it. You don’t have to be like us veterans who used to apply for several credit cards at a time (remember those good old days you guys?). Actually, nobody can during these difficult times with all travel shut down. Ok, where was I going with this?

If it was not for donations and gift cards to help local stores this would be the month with my lowest spending in a very long time. Especially gas and dining out.

Late addition: Travel hacking during the plague.

TRAVEL

I was talking the other day with my client at his cottage up north. You know, in this coronavirus world, the absurd idea of buying a cottage out in the woods near running trails (and wifi of course!) may not be as absurd as I originally thought. The virus is changing us…I can not believe what I just said!

The Norwegian dude over at The Garfors Globe is back with an excellent post with many recommendations on what to do when Traveling While Not.

This is pretty basic but it is still nice to promote my home country with a tourist season coming up that may be a total nightmare: 18 Beautiful and Best Places to Visit in Greece.

I have not had a credit card conversion here in weeks. I mean, who is even thinking about that right now? How can you even accomplish the minimum spend if you are stuck at home? There is always online shopping of course but still, you know what I mean. Weird times indeed! Expect some commercial blogs to start laying off people and some to fold.

Short post coming on Wednesday with some posting changes…I may unload some Covid-19 links in it because I need to justify my paycheck here, LOL.

Starting to really enjoy our family meals, looks like we’ll be stuck at home in April too.

And I leave you with this…

Major changes are coming to the blog. The virus is disrupting us all, more details on Wednesday.

COVID-19

We are all suffering: The Discomfort You’re Feeling is Grief.  <—-Must read.

…we’re feeling a number of different griefs. We feel the world has changed, and it has. We know this is temporary, but it doesn’t feel that way, and we realize things will be different. Just as going to the airport is forever different from how it was before 9/11, things will change and this is the point at which they changed. The loss of normalcy; the fear of economic toll; the loss of connection. This is hitting us and we’re grieving. Collectively. We are not used to this kind of collective grief in the air.

…we’re also feeling anticipatory grief. Anticipatory grief is that feeling we get about what the future holds when we’re uncertain. Usually it centers on death. We feel it when someone gets a dire diagnosis or when we have the normal thought that we’ll lose a parent someday. Anticipatory grief is also more broadly imagined futures. There is a storm coming. There’s something bad out there. With a virus, this kind of grief is so confusing for people. Our primitive mind knows something bad is happening, but you can’t see it. This breaks our sense of safety. We’re feeling that loss of safety. I don’t think we’ve collectively lost our sense of general safety like this. Individually or as smaller groups, people have felt this. But all together, this is new. We are grieving on a micro and a macro level.

find balance in the things you’re thinking

come into the present

let go of what you can’t control

stock up on compassion

Hey, remember when we had just 15 cases and were going down to zero? We are on track to have most cases in the world! Another must read: How the Pandemic Will End?

As a Gen X dude, this article made me feel better about myself: Coronavirus quarantine? Gen X was made for this. Boomers and Gen Z, not so much.

We are not only suffering but we are all going crazy too at home. But lets stick with it a little longer you guys okay? How we know ending social distancing will lead to more deaths, in one chart.

I am always trying to educate. Everything you need to know about having sex while social distancing. I guess kissing and group sex parties are out you guys lol.

Yep, this virus will change us all. Coronavirus Will Change the World Permanently. Here’s How. “A return to faith in serious experts“. Oh my, we need that so badly, we all had enough with so many charlatans out there! And virtual is everywhere. And lots more!

I have a doctor and a nurse as clients. You have NO idea what they are going through. Keeping the Coronavirus from Infecting Health-Care Workers.

All of my links are must read lately, here is another one about what we know so far of this virus: Why the Coronavirus Has Been So Successful.

Needless to say, there has been a comedy of serial monumental phuckups in protecting us from this virus. This Is How We Can Beat the Coronavirus. We can do it but a decent amount of leadership from the ones governing us will certainly help and…ok, too early to beat the clowns, lets wait a little more, see below.

When this virus showed up and it became apparent that it spreads a lot quicker than others, I tweeted in a joking manner (surprise!) that we should all be given two weeks time off. And get paid for it. And focus on ramping up testing, go all in! When we lift the lockdown we test, test, test. And keep testing. And isolating/tracing the positives. And not let up until the eventual cure and vaccine comes. And I am not even an expert WTF! And here we are near the end of March and many states have now instituted weaker stay home policies and we still have many states that are still opposing such measures! It is maddening to watch. We now need an extreme lockdown for at least 4 weeks. After that we can start returning back to normal. Instead, we have the President talking about after a few weeks reconsidering because it is hurting the economy and the stock market. Only to go back and have the virus take off again…Haven’t we learned anything yet? Apparently not. Ok, I veered of a bit, let me get back to the links. Actually, lets start with this one that describes my thinking exactly, come on! All of Side Effects, Few of the Benefits.

While the cure has large side effects, the disease is worse. The real problem is that we’re taking our medicine haphazardly—and as a result, experiencing all of the side effects and few of the benefits. That needs to change.

First, we need a true national pause—a cessation of all nonessential activities. It has to last at least two weeks, and everyone needs to participate. If we all distanced ourselves from one another for that long, the outbreak would slow down significantly. Isolating individual family members may not be socially tenable. Because of that, infections are going to continue within families, but broader spread can be curtailed.

But here is the second part: We need massive, coordinated testing of the population. Even today, we don’t know how many people are infected in the community and how many people without symptoms are spreading the infection to others.

No one believes that these actions lack trade-offs. The economic costs of a pause are immense. We’re already experiencing them; we’re just not reaping the full rewards, because we have yet to do what’s really required. Until we have a vaccine, we can’t expect to eradicate this disease. If we soften our distancing measures too early, we risk making things worse. But if we are willing to do what is necessary, we can get the disease under control, get our economy moving again, and give Americans hope that we will hold the line until a solution finally becomes available.

People without medical or public-health expertise are questioning whether physical distancing is worth it. They’re wondering whether it might be better to let this disease just run its course. That’s a catastrophically bad idea. The human cost would be devastating, and the economic toll from that devastation might be even steeper than what we’re seeing right now. It’s hard for people to understand just how bad an unchecked pandemic could be. More people could die from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, in just a few months than have died in every single war this country has fought since its inception. Such devastation would shut down our hospitals and the entire health-care system. Tens of thousands of doctors and nurses and other health-care professionals would likely get sick. The ripple effects on finances, and on human lives, would be massive and uncontrolled.

This is an important development: Lost Sense of Smell May Be Peculiar Clue to Coronavirus Infection. I can still smell the coffee in the morning and loving the food my wife makes these days at home. Heck, even son did the dishes yesterday, it is SHOCKING!

Must read: “Chinese Virus,” World Market. When I say must read…you know it is.  The best safeguard against the novel coronavirus is the ability to voluntarily withdraw oneself from capitalism. I could excerpt the hell out of this but I need to move on…

Many assholes always rise to the top deflecting from real issues we can all concentrate on to try to solve. Some are educated but they have an agenda. They throw in some numbers that appear legit and coming up with, well, bullshit. One such article recently was one written by an Aaron Ginn at Medium titled “Evidence over hysteria”. It was taken down eventually but it was reposted at notorious BS site Zero Hedge. Watch this real expert give it an EPIC beating it deserves instead!

What we all want to know: How Long Will the Outbreak Last? It Depends on What We Do Now. If we all act like those dumb asses celebrating Spring Break recently without a care in the world, the answer is a long time. Without any mitigation in the form of social distancing and stay-at-home orders, epidemiologists fear a massive spike in cases that will overwhelm the health care infrastructure. Spreading out that blow over a longer period of time has been the primary concern inspiring calls to “flatten the curve” by changing our behavior. But a second benefit of flattening the curve is that it also buys time to ramp up testing and understand where and how the disease is spreading. Yep.

The bucks stops everywhere but the President, sad lol! What Went Wrong with Coronavirus Testing in the U.S.

Must read Twitter thread by the Director of The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. Here is the first tweet: In last 24 hrs there’ve been prominent US voices calling for a stop to social distancing, citing rationale that they’re worse than impact of COVID itself. It’s worth looking very closely at that claim, where we are in US COVID epidemic and what happens if we stop. 1/x

It is like watching a movie sometimes. A mix of science fiction and horror. How Coronavirus Emptied The World’s Streets.

Brooklyn Bridge

I bring you next Coronavirus Insights by, wait for it, Pornhub! Hey, lets not forget that entertaining is part of the mission blogging here. Sadly, very soon to just two days per week. Because conversions and clicks have stopped, maybe everyone is busy traveling from bedroom to basement and going out to buy necessities like guns and ammo? I think the graphs about usage in different countries around the world are very telling! 😉 Add this company to the few winners in this virus economy.

Best video: The Coronavirus Explained & What You Should Do. You are welcome.

Of course you would not escape my form of communication to take another well deserved shot against the racist morons phucking it all up! Why It Matters That Trump Is Calling COVID-19 “the Chinese Virus”. Just one excerpt, I decided to hold back 🙂

It’s not a distraction that Trump is calling COVID-19 (which isn’t that difficult to say) the “Chinese virus.” On so many levels, it’s significant. It gives fuel to rising anti-Asian hate crimes and attacks. It allows Trump and his assorted douches and dicks to deflect blame for the Trump administration’s catastrophic phuck ups in preparing for and dealing with COVID-19 onto China. At today’s petulant press conference, he said, “[I]f people would’ve known about it could have been stopped in place. It could have been stopped where it came from, China.” Except, of course, that “people” did know about it for over a month before Trump took any action at all beyond closing the border to people coming from China (which Italy did before us and then they never saw COVID-19 again…oh, wait). And who the phuck is defending China?  Someone ought to say to Trump, “Motherphucker, you’re the one who always talks about how good you get along with President Xi. What did that get you?”

For you out there still screaming we are killing the economy, checkout the math in this video okay? To recap, you give the flu to one person who gives it to another who gives it to another. You go ten deep and you are responsible for about 14 cases of flu. Ok? But this phucking virus is different. As more infectious. So if you have it you pass it to three people. Lets do the same thing and go again ten layers deep. Care to guess how many you are responsible for infecting? Please sit down. 59,000. And this is why Senator Rand Paul is a phucking moron and asshole.

Do you want to know what it feels like when your spouse gets it? Well, read this: What I Learned When My Husband Got Sick With Coronavirus. This is just excellent writing, wow! Amazing what “fake news” media can do huh?

When this book is out, I am going to sell craploads of it with my Amazon link!

Never seen most of these before: Historical Photos Of The 1918 Spanish Flu That Show What A Global Pandemic Looked Like In The 1910s.

If we could only find a mask in 2020!

Remember the song by Talking Heads that had a line “Take a look at these hands”. The title of the song was Born Under Punches, still sounds fresh today! Just started listening to the “Remain in Light” album again, one of my favs.

And I leave you with this…

7 Ways to Scratch Your Travel Itch at Home

Whether you're a self-isolating couch potato or are corona-quarantined right now, one thing's for sure: we're all going a little stir crazy.

Maybe you were days away from lazing in Cancun's cotton-soft sands. Perhaps you'd finally resolved the 10-person debate of which group getaway to stay in. Or maybe you'd finally saved up enough for that bucket list trip to Machu Picchu. Whichever the case, none of us are going anywhere (far) anytime soon.

Now, nothing can substitute the sensory and emotional experience that travel brings. But here we are, homebound, stuck in our heads, infected with an insatiable travel bug (and hopefully not COVID-19). Without further ado, itchy footers, here are 7 ways to pacify your wanderlust from home.

1. Plan your next trip

It may seem counterintuitive to plan a holiday amidst a pandemic, but so long as you don't make bookings, you may as well feed your bucket list intrigue (& get motivated to save up!). Not to mention, travel planning is allegedly the most enjoyable part of travel (especially from the couch!). Need inspiration? Check our hotlist of budget-friendly destinations.

If the idea of organizing your own holiday is daunting, fret not. Our easy step-by-step guide to trip planning is great for beginners, and outlines exactly how to choose a destination, create an itinerary, and book your own flights for the best price possible.

Now is also a great time to sign up for a travel rewards credit card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred (our top choice – here's our full review). You can get $750 in points as a welcome bonus, but only after hitting the minimum spend in the first 3 months. So if you want your points in time for when we can travel again, you'll need to apply now. Learn more here.

2. Binge Netflix's best travel shows

As simultaneous Netflix and travel junkies, we completed this task long before strict travel advisories confined us to home. Here are some of our top wanderlust-y picks:

Street FoodDark TouristNight on Earth (new & spectacularBreakfast, Lunch & Dinner (by David Chang, also new)The Kindness DiariesPlanet Earth (1 and 2, of course!)Chef's Table (1 & 2, even non-foodies will be inspired)The World's Most Extraordinary Homes

Psst: sorry Hulu & Amazon fans, but we are longtime Netflix devotees. What are your fave travel shows on these platforms?

3. Start a travel-inspired box subscription

Atlas Coffee Club = our favourite subscription box

In our digitally saturated world, physical mail is a nearly-forgotten pleasure. Here are some wanderlust worthy subscription boxes for an affordable self-care treat:

Atlas Coffee Club: Our personal favourite! Get a box of fair-trade single origin coffee from around the world with info on its origin, flavour notes, and brewing tips. Price: $55 USD/month.Art of Tea: Tantalizing fair-trade, sustainable teas from around the world. From soothing matchas to bold spiced chai, there's something for every tea-fiend. Price: $18 USD/monthThe Nomadik: For the outdoors enthusiast, these boxes are customized to your interests and include the latest outdoor and hiking gear. Price: $30 USD/month.Hiker Crate: Practical hiking equipment & products, from snacks & dehydrated meals to new sleeping bag detergents or innovative headlamps. Price: $30 USD/month

4. Make exotic dishes & cocktails at home

Ever sat and reminisced the sweet gooey goodness of Thai mango sticky rice? The punch of your first Peruvian Pisco Sour? The spice explosion of street-made squishy Hong Kong dumplings? You needn't salivate only by memory!

On our most recent ventures through Asia, I got in the habit (read: addiction) of taking cooking classes. I highly recommend doing this on your next trip, even if you're a novice. The good news is, many favourite foreign meals are simple to make. That's because, poor countries tend to have cheap, easy-to-make recipes. Thai, Vietnamese, and South American foods are great places to start. And of course, cocktails are always quick to make!

Simple meal ideas to start, where the bulk of the work is chopping veggies:

Thai curryStir-fried noodles (from a variety of countries)Pad Thai (yep, I promise it's simple!)Pisco Sour (4 ingredients!)

5. Travel virtually

Ireland's Cliffs of Moher at sunset, now viewable virtually any time

Museums, castles, theme parks, and world-class national parks are some of the places you can “travel” to without leaving the couch! Here are just a few places you can virtually visit:

Sunset at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland (spectacular!)Google Arts & Culture created tours:>World-class national parksDramatic & ornate stages from around the worldMetropolitan Opera (streaming performances each night)National Museum of Natural History (virtual tours of exhibits)

6. Get a travel-inspired magazine subscription

As a child, National Geographic is what first flickered my curiosity of foreign cultures and places. Today, magazine choices have expanded far beyond the classics, covering all kinds of travel niches. Here are just a few:

National GeographicBackpacker MagazineGet Lost MagazineFood & TravelLonely PlanetConde NastTravel & Leisure

7. Travel & explore locally

The best thing you can do in the current situation with COVID-19 is to stay home, and only go out when absolutely necessary (e.g. getting groceries). But as official restrictions and advisories loosen down the road, local businesses and tourist destinations will need all of our support.

On a whole, local travel is gaining traction, both as a method of responsible travel as well as the collective realization that one's own surroundings are also worth exploring. Consider nearby weekend getaways, cozy Airbnb stays, new camping spots, or reachable national parks. Check Google Maps or your local tourism board for parks or trail ideas.

We bring you the best Covid-19 coverage online, we try virtual travel, IRS extends tax season to July 15, latest James Bond Daniel Craig retires, recommend many places to travel to online, learn how doctors help injured war veterans, go inside the Venezueal crypto Petro story, take another dump on the racist orange buffoon leading us to ruin while he rates himself 10 out of 10, beat up on the usual suspect blogs instead of crying for continuing to pour so much time in my blog while never even making at least minimum wage and wondering if I am insane, trying to come to grips with the new Covid-19 world and the deep changes that are already here and in the months ahead while hoping the scientists save us again soon. So, take care of yourselves, these are difficult times for so many people, be kind and generous and we shall beat this virus together…by standing six feet apart, what a mind bender huh?

Brought to you by the amazing TBB Amazon link! This blog is published every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Except in major US Holidays. For now…

Heads up to new readers: If you are a fan of Donald Trump, you can stay and get educated if you are open to it. If you get enraged by never Trumpers, this blog is not for you, leave now. Bye bye.

COVID-19

I am going to do this week’s Wednesday post on this but because everything is moving so fast I am going to throw you a few links here, so here we go:

This is a must read. The Doctor Who Helped Defeat Smallpox Explains What’s Coming.

But did we get good advice from the president of the United States for the first 12 weeks? No. All we got were lies. Saying it’s fake, by saying this is a Democratic hoax. There are still people today who believe that, to their detriment. Speaking as a public health person, this is the most irresponsible act of an elected official that I’ve ever witnessed in my lifetime. But what you’re hearing now [to self-isolate, close schools, cancel events] is right. Is it going to protect us completely? Is it going to make the world safe forever? No. It’s a great thing because we want to spread out the disease over time.

Because of the intense interest in getting [Covid-19] conquered, we will put the scientific clout and money and resources behind finding antivirals that have prophylactic or preventive characteristics that can be used in addition to [vaccines].

I’m in the age group that has a one in seven mortality rate if I get it. If you’re not worried, you’re not paying attention. But I’m not scared. I firmly believe that the steps that we’re taking will extend the time that it takes for the virus to make the rounds. I think that, in turn, will increase the likelihood that we will have a vaccine or we will have a prophylactic antiviral in time to cut off, reduce, or truncate the spread. Everybody needs to remember: This is not a zombie apocalypse. It’s not a mass extinction event.

The other must read document is this and I am afraid we are way too late but maybe not that late if we get lucky but with so many still going outside and carrying on their normal lives I start to wonder aloud WTF.  The Hammer and the Dance. Yes, must read too. On Twitter I had suggested we shut down the country for two weeks when the first few cases appeared, basically give everyone a two week paid vacation (by the Feds) while focusing like a laser beam on getting the tests ready…well, it is now late March. Apparently this is not a hoax and it is just not going away…

Folks, this is not like the flu, okay? A Medical Worker Describes Terrifying Lung Failure From COVID-19 — Even in His Young Patients.

Imagine if experts were doing the briefings instead of blaming the media when all citizens are looking for direction…I know, I know, I must control myself. Oh, here is the expert: Dr. Emily Landon at the Illinois Governor’s COVID-19 Press Conference. Or this masterful speech to the nation by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Check your risk for COVID-19 with this Coronavirus Checker.

The latest column by Detroit’s own Mitch Albom: The epic struggle of the coronavirus pandemic: What and who to believe.

The whole miles and points industry is hurting. BAD! I mean, what did you expect with travel grounded? If you think about it…sometimes we all have a hard time comprehending what just  happened and what lies ahead. This phucking virus was a little different than all the others. So, brace yourselves. I haven’t checked my Award Wallet balances for a month now lol.

Next time you see a blogger writing about how you can travel to Hawaii for free only if you apply for six travel rewards credit cards on their site…perhaps you may want to tell them to inform their readers that this comes with a 2 week mandatory quarantine, okay?

TRAVEL

Since you have lots of time these days and can not travel, how about traveling virtually to UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Lets keep this going with Museums!

Explore abandoned places, wow! The Proper People.

If you are freaking out while you are grounded, well, get used to it. And maybe click this to go on a Train Journey to the Norwegian Arctic Circle freeeee!

PERSONAL FINANCE

We are hopefully going to see some help from the federal government to help all the people who have gotten hurt if we only had prepared for it. First thing out was some tax help: July 15 tax filing and payment deadline Q&A. And of course it was announced by a tweet and the IRS had to scramble to explain what it all meant…just your typical moronic way of doing things lately, getting used to it yet?

You can keep track of all IRS developments in its own Coronavirus Tax Relief website.

Folks, this is why you should avoid debt and have a very well funded cash emergency fund. Because, SHITHappens…when you least expect it. Remember when I was saying to stop checking your portfolio every day and never to fall in love with the highest number you see in it?

Saw something over the weekend and wrote it down to share with you: “…if an investor missed the S&P 500′s 10 best days in each decade, total returns would be just 91%, strikingly below the 14,962% return for investors who held steady throughout the ups and downs.“. Let that sink in…

ODDZ & ENDZ

Must read by Al Franken: The Last Straw. This is how it starts and just never lets up, bravo!

Well, it finally isn’t funny anymore – the grandiosity, the ignorance, the cruelty, the bullying, the racism, the petty insults and incessant stupidity. But especially the non-stop lying.

This is a deep piece on Daniel Craig: Heart of An Assassin: How Daniel Craig Changed James Bond Forever. It goes way back in his childhood and how he got started and how they found him to be the next James Bond and how many were opposed to him (including me, I did not do anything of course…I just thought he never looked the part okay?). Well, he proved us all wrong.

Fascinating story about Venezuela and the efforts behind the introduction of its virtual currency Petro and the guy behind it all. The Coder and the Dictator.

We never talk about genital war injuries. Until now that is. How two British surgeons took on the wounded soldier’s last taboo. War sucks!

No wonder North Korea has been so successful dealing with the virus you guys:

BLOG BUZZ

We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.

We are bored. But staying home…

Thank God for wifi, it that goes down, the real depression will hit…

I am focusing on my work as I will likely start to slow down this blog. First casualty will be the Wednesday posts as conversions and Amazon clicks have dried up. If I am hurting, just imagine the coming carnage at The Points Guy. I saw on Twitter the company let go two more people…

RIP Kenny Rogers. I never liked any of  your songs but sad to hear.

Remember Million Mile Secrets? The site has  turned into a pure credit card sales “blog” now, it should be renamed Million Miles of Shit! I mean, in these unique times, here is a list of its most recent blog posts, WTF! Thanks Daraius and Emily, we miss you…not really!

Blog reader suggested to me instead of quitting here to turn my posts into a newsletter and make it subscriber only. Interesting idea. I don’t have the technical expertise to do this and I have a hard time coming to terms with the fact of restricting the educating/entertaining/inspiring blog mission. But something has to give…

We are all stressed out, take care of yourselves, stay home if you can and do something useful and productive.

Unless a miracle happens, Wednesday posts starting in April go poof, just two days posting here. I guess if you build it they don’t come without any marketing whatsoever. Shocking!

And I leave you with this…

When you expect SARS but get COVID-19
