MUST READ MVP PICK

There are some reads that blow you away. This was one of them. Remember the fall of Communism in Romania and the execution of the certified mega asshole Nicolae Ceaușescu and his mega bitch wife? When the world discovered the thousands of abandoned orphans and the horrific conditions they were living in? Many from abroad adopted some of them. This is the absolute stunning story of one of them. If you are going to read one thing today, make it this one. You will see why. The couple adopting kids like that are heroes, I could not do what they did.

30 Years Ago, Romania Deprived Thousands of Babies of Human Contact

COVID-19

Ever since the mayhem started, we knew what we had to do. Take drastic measures very early, test like crazy, isolate positive cases and contact trace like never before. And yet…we have not really done any of these things. And many continue to die, the fear is out there and therefore we just can not reopen the economy as fast as we could have. No leadership to give it to us straight. On the contrary, it appears our present federal leadership is functioning in some alternative reality. Which is just complete batshit crazy. It was all fun and games before as the economy was kicking ass and our 401k plans were only going up. Not anymore, we have lost almost 120,000 of our own citizens in less than four months, WTF! How many needless Covid-19 deaths were caused by delays in responding? Most of them.

Our analysis shows that with the same actions actually taken by other nations large and small, from East and West, the U.S. could have prevented 70% to 99% of its Covid-19 deaths. This has been a needless tragedy.

We can beat up on China of course on so many levels. But controlling the pandemic (even after the slow initial response that effectively turned it into a pandemic of course) afterwards is probably not one of them. As of the time I am typing this, China has about 83,000 cases and 4,634 dead (yeah, they are likely low…and so are ours, sad lol). And they have managed to almost get their economy back to normal. New outbreaks are handled amazingly fast and in a strict manner. I don’t know, maybe this is what it takes to control this phucking virus which is proving, well, so phucking difficult to control! The way Beijing tracked its second wave is a lesson for us all. Read this and see how many of these measures we are not doing. Hell, we have managed to make wearing a mask a political statement here, smh!

We all want it fast. Maybe fast is not a good idea. Best read on vaccines: How — and When — Can the Coronavirus Vaccine Become a Reality? I think we will get there eventually, all the scientists are locked in!

Not to ruin your breakfast (or whatever meal ) you are enjoying but…Covid-19 Is Bad. But It May Not Be the ‘Big One’. Hopefully, we do not have a short memory after this one is over…

“Covid-19 should make the case that, at the highest level, political leaders and health leaders should never let pandemics off of their priority list again.”

I am learning more about the 1918 pandemic. We had mask deniers back then too! We call them maskholes, back then they were called mask slackers. Watch this clip! During the 1918 flu pandemic, “mask slackers” were arrested, anti-mask protesters stormed city council, and a bomb was found outside a doctor’s office. 100 years later, the War Against Masks rages on.

Since we are on the subject of masks, we get another post about them, this one by the Lazy Traveler: Masks on a Plane: It’s Up to Airlines to #MASA — Make AirTravel Safe Again. Good advice but hey, logic is missing in our toxic political environment. But this should have never been about politics, it is about our public health!!!!!!<——exclamation marks indicate I am phucking screaming!<—–this one just because it fits right here in that spot ok?

There are enough holes in threats from A4A, American, Delta, and United to fly a few planeloads through. If you want something to be done, don’t just threaten a maskhole whose goal is to circumvent your rules here and now with “future flight privileges.” Make it more difficult for them here and now, not in the future!

You know, the other day I wondered tweeted out loud: What if the first wave never ends? U.S. reports more than 30,000 coronavirus cases two days straight, the highest number since May 1. Can you imagine this would happen when states reopened so early, wow, just wow! wow=smh And in the world stage WHO reports largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases. Yikes!

Get used to this for a while: Dr. Fauci says normalcy may not return until next year following Covid-19 case spikes. Do you think Dr. Fauci will write a book too? He should 😉

MILES & POINTS

HOT CREDIT CARD OFFERS: The Citi Business American Airlines AAdvantage Platinum Select Mastercard offer is 65,000 AA miles. The IHG Rewards Club card offering 140k points too, highest ever. For a standard workhorse card I recommend the 60k Chase Sapphire Preferred card. For a standard premium card I recommend the 50k Chase Sapphire Reserve card. For a standard 2% cash back card I recommend the Citi Double Cash card. Available with my links. Lets move on!

I have added above the 65,000 AA miles offer for the Citi Business American Airlines AAdvantage Platinum Select Mastercard. If you decide to get it, please support the blog by using my links, thank you. Ask in the comments or email me with questions.

I don’t have anything….so, how about watching F16 flights filmed in 8k instead? I am sure you won’t mind!

Wait, I do: Did IHG make a mistake with dynamic reward pricing? The best redemptions have been pulled ….I warned you this was coming, sad lol.

In the last TBB post, I kindly asked if someone had time to get into the Powerpoint presentation United used to get a $5 billion loan so they can do a guest post. I was ignored as expected and gave yet another blogger a valid reason to dig and come up with some juicy information. I would have done the same but since I am not paid minimum wage here I declined 🙂  United’s Creative MileagePlus Accounting Gets Them A $5 Billion Loan, It Also Gives Us A Fun Insiders Look Into Their Program.

TRAVEL

Breaking:We all wish we were traveling again, this is by far the longest since I have flown and I am sure we all hate it! So, in the meantime, we are resigned to just click on links and pretend we are there…24 Astonishing and Historical Places to Visit in Central Asia.

But wait, we can instead drive to Best Places to Camp in All 50 States. One day I am going to make it to Isle Royale National Park in Michigan.

Very interesting read on the history of in-flight-entertainment. The in-flight entertainment system was once a novel idea that kept passengers enthralled. Now in the COVID-19 era, it’s both outdated and a serious germ hazard.  The movie projector aboard started in 1961.

At first, he convinced one single domestic airline, TWA, to offer the service to its first-class passengers. (The first international airline to try it, Pakistan International Airlines, offered it to every passenger.) [Pakistan International Airlines, really?]

PERSONAL FINANCE

There are some really good thoughts here: In Our Own Way.

My advice: Persevere with these battles when they’re important. But don’t expect to be the perfect citizen. Occasionally have that third slice of pizza. Go ahead, have another glass of wine. Sure, skip the occasional workout. What about also skipping the IRA contribution? Hey, let’s not go crazy here.

We all know the political environment is batshit crazy. But this has now extended to The Economy Is A Mess. So Why Isn’t The Stock Market? Doing a lot of reevaluating right now…on everything. This time is different 🙂

CURRENT EVENTS/POLITICS

This may make you depressed. So many disturbed morons out there that have come out of their holes it is unbelievably and sadly shocking! “He’s the Chosen One to Run America”: Inside the Cult of Trump, His Rallies Are Church and He Is the Gospel. I lost count how many times I screamed WTF after reading an article, seriously! When I got to the end I wanted to cut myself!

Public Enemy is back and they are really pissed off! Public Enemy releases new anti-Trump protest video. And I love it!

ODDZ & ENDZ

In this world we are aware of many kingpins. Did you know there is a cave kingpin? He is confined to Minnesota for now…I did not even know that state had any caves in the first place! The Cave Kingpin Buying Up America’s Underground.

This is about some women fraudsters who fooled people for years pretending they are rich. We are talking about elaborate frauds involving the cooperation of others pretending about inheritances that are coming. I was always fascinated by the question “Are you born this way?”…Is it in the genes or something? Probably…An Invisible Crown: How to Be an Heiress. I shook my head a lot but not as often as the article about the Trump cultists above.

This is one of the sweetest stories you will read/listen to. It is about a guy so obsessed about being a DJ he had his own show for 40 years broadcasting to himself! The DJ Who Broadcast to One Listener for 40 Years. And then the story took the sweetest turn after so many years! Listening to him in his 70’s say at the end “Living the dream is more enjoyable than realizing the dream. Live the dream dude!” should bring a big smile to your face. If not, there must be something wrong with your face. Dude! 🙂  Wait…Living the dream of making it big as a blogger is not as enjoyable dude, in fact, it is a nightmare! #notreallybutclose

COVID-19

If we had only handled it like Vietnam! Vietnam, Population 95 Million, Has Recorded 0 Deaths from Covid-19. And Vietnam even shares a border with China!

Example #6,838 how we have totally screwed up our response to the pandemic: Daily Confirmed COVID-19 Cases between USA and European Union. Be angry!

If you wanted to get more visually scientific about this virus, this article is it! A Visual Guide to the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus. I am starting to feel like an amateur epidemiologist by now you guys.

Some good news at last! U.K. approves use of life-saving coronavirus drug dexamethasone in ‘biggest breakthrough yet’. These are early results from an unfinished clinical trial that has not been peer reviewed yet, fyi. I expect to see more of these small victories way before a vaccine materializes…

Michigan is the only state that is doing a great job in fighting the pandemic: For now, Michigan is a success story in flattening the pandemic curve.

Controlling this virus is so hard it must be maddening. Even Beijing just had a recurrence! And they have no idea how it all started again, was it fish shipped from Europe? Source of Beijing’s big new COVID-19 outbreak is still a mystery. Notice how they are handling it and how we here have the President never wearing a mask and holding stadium rallies and disturbed individuals protesting how not having a haircut is so limiting to their freedom, WTF! We need to attack this HARD so we can get back to normal SOONER, hello? If not, the first wave may not end for a very long time, how many dead do we want? It is just so deadly absurd how we are handling it here. Fear of Infection Hurt the Economy More Than Lockdowns!

Beijing’s confirmation of a COVID-19 case on 11 June ended a run of 55 days without reported local transmission. Since then, the outbreak has burgeoned and the city has responded with fierce determination to rein it in. As of today, it has tested 356,000 people, confirming 137 cases, according to a news report by Xinhua, the state-owned news agency. The city has locked down some residential compounds, closed all schools, and canceled hundreds of flights.

CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta goes on a tweetstorm and takes lying Mike Pence to the woodshed.

This is relevant to the travel theme of the blog: How Covid-19 could change plane boarding. I have been around long enough to have seen so many boarding schemes that I could go on forever…Maybe this one will stick. Probably not. Time will tell.

I am not sure the point behind Marriott’s move here, I guess they decided it can’t hurt their evaporating bottom line too much: Marriott gifting elite night credit & dropping many redemption rates.

No surprises here that an airline will try to cash in with its frequent flyer program: United taps frequent flyer program to back $5 billion loan, sees cash burn easing. United used to burn $50 million per day. It managed to get it down to $40 million and now aims for only $30 million per day. Don’t be shocked if we see yet another consolidation in this industry…If you wanted to do a deep dive into the United Mileage Plus program, I have a deal for you! Go through all 47 pages and write a summary as a guest post here, go! 🙂

Good to see all the policies laid out in this post: COVID-19 Hotel flexibility policies compared for future trip planning.

We all know that the travel industry is going to be much smaller. Hilton is not kidding around: Hilton Cuts Nearly a Quarter of Its Corporate Workforce: Will It Regret the Deep Layoffs? And we have another two airlines grounding themselves to what it appears to be…insolvency oblivion: LEVEL Europe and LATAM Argentina. Google them if you want more details…

One of the most tragic stories in the news lately: 20-Year-Old Robinhood Customer Dies By Suicide After Seeing A $730,000 Negative Balance. Trading stocks is NOT entertainment, you can hurt yourself. I always despised Robinhood for doing this. I could have made a lot of money for my blog by pushing Robinhood affiliate links like so many other bloggers. Who knows, maybe this kid opened his account from one of these bloggers. Well, he sure did not open his account from my affiliate link and that makes me sleep better at night that I had absolutely nothing to do with his tragic death. So, next time you see another blogger selling his Robinhood affiliate link and making you look like an idiot for NOT opening an account and NOT claiming “free” stock…tell them to screw themselves!

COVID-19

I do not want to start like this but here it is, forgive me: The Virus Will Win.

In the fullness of time, many books will be written about why a country as rich, powerful, and scientifically advanced as the United States failed quite so badly at coping with a public-health emergency that experts had predicted for many years. As is always the case, competing explanations will quickly emerge. Some will focus on the incompetence of the Trump administration, while others will draw attention to the country’s loss of state capacity; some will argue that the United States is an outlier, while others will put its failure in the context of other countries, such as Brazil and Russia, that are also faring poorly.

We were on the brink of doing something incredible. And much of the credit for that would have gone to the many ordinary citizens who lived up to their moral responsibility in an extraordinary moment.

Thanks to the effort of millions of people, we were close to a great success story. But because of the failures of Trump and Chauvin, of the CDC and the WHO, of public-health experts and Fox News hosts, we are, instead, likely to give up—and tolerate that hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens will die needless deaths. Pandemics reveal the true state of a society. Ours has come up badly wanting.

Ok, this must be the mvp link of the day. MUST read: The Long Shadow of the Future. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed how valuable it is for governments to have operational expertise, plan for the long-term and socialize certain risks. Not going to excerpt every line but I should, make the time to read this.

Sobering thread by an MD in the front lines at New York City. Sit down when you read this.

Hey it is not all bad, seriously! Quarantine has changed us — and it’s not all bad. They are: Reducing consumerism, slowing down and putting less pressure on ourselves, prioritizing family and friends, ethical action and activism in our highly interconnected world, exercising daily, baking/vegetarian cooking/growing herbs, spending more time in nature, working from home.

Some good advice on How to Navigate Your Community Reopening, Remember the Four C’s. Close contact, confined spaces, crowds, choices.

How is your State doing? How We Reopen Safely. I see lots of red and yellow and just a few green states, hello?

Hey, it is like nobody warned us. “Totally predictable”: State reopenings have backfired. It is becoming clear that some states reopened too soon. Then again, some did it and they are not seeing positive cases grow. Why? We do not know yet…But these two excerpts just sum it up well in my view:

“We managed to disrupt our economy [and] skyrocket unemployment, and we didn’t control the damn virus,” one scientist says.

The initial lockdown period avoided the worst possible scenario, but the US didn’t use that time to prepare for managing the pandemic in the future. And now we’ve wasted the weeks that have passed since reopening. [What a damn shame!]

PERSONAL FINANCE

Let’s talk about yield. Or, to be more precise, the disappearing minuscule yield these days: Farewell Yield. Some good points here…

A lot of what is happening in the markets is of course due to the developments from the global pandemic we are going through. This pretty much sums up my views on the subject. Yes I am pissed off. Reopening.

But now everybody’s sick of being cooped up inside, they want to party!

It’s like the doctor saying you broke your leg and you need to wear a cast for six weeks, but you’re sick of the itch and you remove it after four. Huh? Then again, who is to trust doctors, they’re all about the money, it’s best to trust web research and your friends, after all the medical industrial complex is out to get you.

It’s just raw insanity. People were tired of being cooped up, a bunch of them protested at statehouses, and government officials blinked and started opening up their cities and states. You saw those pics from Memorial Day, well now the results are in…PEOPLE GOT INFECTED!

It’s science.

But we no longer believe in science. There’s no global warming, nothing is definitive so let’s not take any action. Can you PROVE vaccinations are harmless? Can you PROVE there’s no God? Well, until you can, I’m taking my own counsel. Because you know big business is against the people. But we must reopen the country for big business. Huh?

CURRENT EVENTS/POLITICS

Way before George Floyd, we had Rodney King. We did not have phones with cameras back then. One guy carrying an actual heavy video camera filmed his beating and of course the four officers were acquitted. And then the infamous LA riots began. I remember watching them on TV and could not believe my eyes. Kind of sad to see not much has changed since then. Anyway, this is a must watch documentary about that event. Many scenes were new to me. It is almost two hours long. If you are too busy to watch the whole thing, just spare seven minutes if you can, 1.24.00 -1.31.00.

The BEST Travel Credit Card for 2020: Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is the first card I recommend to all travelers, and the best travel credit card for 2020.  It comes with a sweet sign-up bonus, ongoing opportunities to earn and redeem rewards, and extra benefits that almost all travelers can take advantage of.  In fact, it’s one of the few travel reward cards I’ve held onto and use regularly ever since I first got it in 2013.

Highlights of the Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card stands out as one of the best travel credit cards for 2020 by offering generous benefits for a low annual fee:

Welcome bonus of 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points(worth $750) after spending $4,000 in the first 3 monthsOngoing earnings of 2 points per dollar spent on travel and dining (1 point for everything else)Option to transfer points to partner airline and hotel programsOption to book travel at a rate of 1 point = 1.25 cents through their booking portal with no blackout datesBasic travel protection, including trip cancellation insurance and other benefitsPrimary car rental Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) coverageNo foreign transaction feesLearn how to apply

Unlike other Chase Sapphire Preferred reviews, I’ll also share a few of the card’s intangible perks: things don’t necessarily hold a dollar value but still offer additional value.

Top Ways I’ve Used the Chase Sapphire Preferred

A few years ago, I transferred my welcome bonus to United MileagePlus to book a round-trip flight to Slovenia during peak summer travel, an ordinarily expensive route.  I even used the Chase Sapphire Preferred to cover my rental car CDW insurance for a roadtrip through Slovenia and Croatia!

Exploring Rovinj, Croatia for FREE after redeeming the CSP Welcome Bonus (I paid taxes of about $140)

Over the years, I’ve earned thousands of Ultimate Rewards (UR) points which helped me take some amazing trips:

Round-trip flight Richmond, VA to Slovenia with one-way in business class valued at $3,000 — I only paid $140 in taxesOne-way first class flight Atlanta to Vietnam valued at $8,000 — I paid $65 in taxesOne-way economy flight from Nuremberg, Germany to Richmond for next day travel valued at $1000 — I paid $125 in taxesOne-way economy flight from Cairo, Egypt to Paris, France valued at $400 — paid $65 in taxesOne-way economy flight from London to Detroit valued at $700 — just $200 in taxesOne-way economy flight Lima to Cusco, Peru on New Year’s valued at $175 — only $10 in taxesThe only hotel I’ve ever used Ultimate Rewards for: the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu, where I used 5,000 points to save on a $140 room

And coming soon: I’m flying Iberia Airlines in a few months, after converting 34,000 Ultimate Rewards into Iberia Avios for a one-way business class flight from San Sebastian to Boston.  That ticket is normally $2,000 but I only paid $125 in taxes.

Redeeming points earned with the Chase Sapphire Preferred helps me travel when I otherwise couldn’t afford it!

Flying in comfort to Asia, thanks to the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Where The Chase Sapphire Preferred Welcome Bonus Can Take You

The best part about the Chase Sapphire Preferred 60,000 point welcome bonus is that it’s flexible and can be used for any type of travel.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are a few of my favorite ideas:

1)   Book a Flying Blue Business Class Promo Award to Europe

Every month, Flying Blue releases a list of cities that are eligible for awards at 20-50% off their normal mileage rate when flying on Air France or KLM.  For example, we’ve recently seen tickets from Chicago to Budapest for 40,000 miles.  Pair this with an economy award in the other direction on airlines like Virgin Atlantic and you’ll end up with a round-trip ticket for just the cost of taxes and fees.

2)   Book a Week in Bali

There are currently five properties on Bali that cost 12,000 Hyatt points per night or less and you can easily transfer Ultimate Rewards to World of Hyatt to make a reward booking.  Choose your hotels strategically and you could hop from one part of the island to another for up to 12 nights at high-end hotels just from using your welcome bonus!

Book this Seminyak, Bali hotel for just 5,000 points per night (and then head to other spots like Ubud or Nusa Dua)

3)   Book 4 Round-Trip Economy Tickets Within the USA

Finding award tickets for a family can be challenging since airlines limit the number of awards available, but you can redeem your points without limitations when you book on the Chase travel portal.  If you can find a ticket from your home to anywhere else for $187 or less, your welcome bonus covers the cost of four tickets.  Going somewhere more expensive?  Just pay the difference in cash.

4)   Book Two Round-Trip Tickets from New York to Costa Rica

By transferring your Ultimate Rewards to British Airways Avios, you’ll have enough points for two round-trip tickets from New York to San Jose, Costa Rica; the tickets add up to 26,000 miles per person and about $50 in taxes.  If you’re traveling on off-peak dates, you might even find flights for cheaper when using Southwest or JetBlue points (both programs have varying award costs based on cash prices) or by booking directly from the Chase portal.

Other Card Benefits Included With Your Annual Fee

For frequent travelers, the $95 annual fee on the Chase Sapphire Preferred pays for itself with the inclusion of extra benefits.

A high-level look at included benefits.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

Let’s start with a simple but valuable benefit: there are no foreign transaction fees when you use your Chase Sapphire Preferred while traveling internationally.

Many cards, especially cards with no annual fee, add on a ~3% surcharge to all purchases made with a foreign currency.  That adds up quickly if you’re traveling abroad and charging hotels, restaurants, tours, and transportation.  Spend $3200 or more and you’re already money ahead.

Travel Insurance and Protection

The Chase Sapphire Preferred offers a generous travel insurance package compared to other cards with annual fees of $100 or less.  To qualify, you’ll need to book and pay for your transportation ticket (flight, cruise, etc.) with the Sapphire Preferred.

Some of the protections include:

Baggage Delay Reimbursement (up to $100 per day toward purchases of essential items when your checked bag is not delivered on time)Lost Luggage Reimbursement (up to $3,000 toward lost or damaged items)Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance (up to $10,000 when you need to cancel or end a trip early due to death, injury, or documented illness of you or immediate family member)Trip Delay Reimbursement (up to $500 toward unanticipated expenses when your trip is delayed by 12+ hours)Travel Accident Insurance (up to $500,000 when you die during a travel accident — yikes!)

These are great perks for low-risk trips when you wouldn’t otherwise buy travel insurance, like visiting grandma or a weekend getaway to a city in your own country.  I made a claim when a cancelled flight required me to spend the night in Charlotte; I was reimbursed for my hotel, Uber rides, and meals.

Notably, medical costs are not covered, so you might want to shop around for a medical and evacuation policy on international trips. For medical insurance, we recommend World Nomads. They're the “all inclusive” option known for honoring claims made through their simple online process. They cover almost all adventure and sports activities, and you can buy and extend coverage even while on your trip.

Primary Car Rental Insurance

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is one of the few cars that offers primary collision damage waiver coverage on rental cars.  This benefit is available in most countries and covers damage to all standard passenger vehicles (some “exotic” rentals, like Ferraris and Maseratis are explicitly excluded).

Remember, this is CDW coverage, so it will pay for damage to the rental vehicle, but you’ll still need liability coverage through your auto insurer at home for injuries or medical expenses.

Three Intangible Benefits

I mentioned earlier that there are a few non-dollar reasons I love the Chase Sapphire Preferred as well:

First, the card always works.  The card is a Visa, which means it’s widely accepted worldwide and it’s been reliable for me even when cards from other banks were incorrectly flagged for fraud while traveling.

Next, they have awesome customer service.  When I call in, I talk to a human being instead of a phone tree.  Better yet, the associates I’ve spoken to are well-trained and able to assist in an appropriate manner so problems are solved quickly.

Lastly, the card is simpleThe Sapphire Preferred is designed for customers who want to set it and forget it.  The rewards are easy, so you don’t have to spend dozens of hours learning how to redeem them, and the website is intuitive for general banking and reward redemptions.  It’s a no-brainer to apply and hold onto the card long-term so you can spend your mental energy on other things.

How to Earn Chase Ultimate Rewards

Chase offers a generous welcome bonus for new cardholders: 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points when you spend $4,000 within the first three months of card approval.  That’s a fast way to jumpstart your earning!

Thereafter, you’ll earn Ultimate Rewards through normal everyday spending.  You’ll get 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and dining and 1 point per dollar on everything else.

Chase defines travel as the things you'd expect (e.g. hotels, airfare, cruises, car rentals) but also includes less-obvious purchases like taxis, toll roads, paid parking, campgrounds, and more.  Dining is also broadly-defined, including restaurants, fast food, bars, coffeeshops, and even some food delivery services (like Grubhub).

Want to earn even faster?  Add an authorized user for no extra fee and their spending will earn Ultimate Rewards for the same account.

For additional earnings, you can start your online shopping purchase through the “Shop through Chase” portal.  A few extra clicks will help you earn an additional points for every dollar spent at participating online retailers like Best Buy or Macy’s.com.

Hundreds of online retailers participate in Shop Through Chase

How to Redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards

There are two different ways to redeem Ultimate Rewards for travel.  That flexibility means you should get great value regardless of your goals and preferences.

Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to partner airlines and hotels where you then redeem your points directly through those frequent flyer programs.  This is a great way to book high-value redemptions at a reduced rate, like first class flights and luxury hotels.  I’m flying business class this spring on Iberia Airlines from Spain for just 34,000 UR — a fabulous redemption compared to the cash price of $2,000.

Current Ultimate Rewards airline partners include: Aer Lingus, Air France, British Airways, Emirates, KLM, Iberia, JetBlue, Singapore Airlines, Southwest, United, and Virgin Atlantic.  Hotel partners include IHG, Marriott, and Hyatt.

The downside to booking through partner programs is that rewards often come with blackout dates or capacity controls, which can be frustrating for travelers.  You can work around these restrictions by using your rewards to redeem points through the Chase portal instead of transferring directly to programs.

When you book through the Chase portal, Ultimate Rewards points are worth 1.25 cents per point (e.g. the welcome bonus of 60,000 points = $750).  You can book any flight or hotel that is normally available through an online travel agency like Expedia, so you can choose any airline or hotel of your preference with no blackout dates.

Since your points are worth a fixed value when redeeming this way, it is often a good option when flying in economy or staying at mid-range hotels.  For thrifty travelers that find airfare deals or hotel sales, you might actually use fewer points than transferring to an official frequent flyer program.

The Thrifty Gist

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is the best travel credit card, offering a welcome bonus of 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points (worth $750 or more!)You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points you earn with the card to flight and hotel partner programs, or redeem them for any bookable travel with no blackout dates online for maximum flexibilityThe card’s annual fee pays for itself with the welcome bonus, no foreign transaction fees, and benefits like travel protections and CDW insuranceLooking for other options?
