The 8 classes of Norwegian Cruise Line ships, explained

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Some cruise lines — Viking, for instance — have fleets where many of the ships have the same basic design. Norwegian Cruise Line is not one of them.

If you’re thinking of booking a Norwegian cruise,  an important thing to know is that there is a wide variation in the size and style of the vessels in the line’s fleet.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

Five of Norwegian’s 18 ships — Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Epic — are among the 30 biggest ships in the world. As such, they’re loaded with huge numbers of cabins, restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top amusements.

They are, in a nutshell, floating megaresorts.

The line also operates a lot of smaller vessels that barely crack the top 100 list of biggest cruise ships. In general, these ships have fewer venues and attractions than the bigger ships. However, they still offer a lot for cruisers. Norwegian is a line known for packing oodles of restaurants, bars and entertainment on its vessels — even its smaller ones.

The good news for those of you trying to get a handle on all the options within the Norwegian fleet is that the line’s 18 ships can be bunched into just eight groups of vessels with similar amenities. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

Each of these groups — known as “classes” in cruise industry lingo — is made up of ships that were constructed around the same time in the same basic design.

n introduction to Norwegian Cruise Line ships

Smaller only than Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, Norwegian has become increasingly known for some of the biggest, most amenity-filled vessels at sea. As mentioned above, though, the line doesn’t just operate giant ships. More than half its fleet comprises vessels that, by today’s standards, are considered almost midsize.

Indeed, Norwegian is essentially two cruise lines in one. The line’s eight newest ships are big, bustling floating megaresorts that can carry upwards of 3,000 to 4,000 passengers at double occupancy (even more with every berth filled). At around 143,000 to nearly 170,000 tons, all eight currently rank among the 50 biggest cruise ships in the world (although their rankings will shift downward as more big ships debut).

However, Norwegian’s 10 older ships are much more modest in size, measuring around 75,000 to 94,000 tons and carrying closer to 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Norwegian appeals both to cruisers who like a giant resort vibe and those who prefer something more modest. The key, depending on your tastes, is getting on the right ship in the fleet.

On the big-ship end of the spectrum, Norwegian’s four new Breakaway Plus vessels — Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape — are the line’s premier offerings.

One step down in size from the Breakaway Plus ships are the still-quite-large Breakaway Class ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — and the one-of-a-kind Norwegian Epic.

The smallest of the line’s big ships is the just unveiled Norwegian Prima, the first of a new series of six vessels that will roll out over the next five years and significantly transform the brand. Measuring 142,500 tons a piece, they all will be about 17% smaller than Norwegian’s biggest vessels.

Norwegian’s 10 smaller vessels break down into five classes, though many are roughly the same size and offer similar amenities.

Prima Class

Ships in class: Norwegian Prima (2022), Norwegian Viva (2023).

Size: 143,535 tons.

The Prima class is the latest and greatest at Norwegian — with the ships that every Norwegian fan wants to book.

For now, there is just one vessel in the series in operation (Norwegian Prima), as of August 2022. However, Norwegian is already taking bookings for the second ship in the series (Norwegian Viva), which will debut in 2023. Four more sister vessels are on order for delivery by 2027.

Under development since 2017, this is Norwegian’s first new class of ship in more than a decade and, at 143,535 tons, the vessels in the series are notably smaller than the ships the line has been adding in recent years — a factor that will give them access to smaller ports around the world.

Still, Norwegian Prima and its coming sisters are relatively big ships that pack a lot of over-the-top amenities. Norwegian Prima, notably, has a ridiculously big go-kart track that spreads over three decks (a cruise industry first). The ship also boasts The Drop, a 10-story dry slide that the line says provides more G-force than an accelerating F1 race car.

Additionally, the vessel is home to a three-deck theater that converts into a Las Vegas-style nightclub, along with a list of interactive, real-life game shows, including at-sea versions of “The Price Is Right,” “Supermarket Sweep,” “Press Your Luck” and “Beat the Clock.”

That said, Norwegian Prima is about more than flashy entertainment and activities. It marks a more upscale turn for the line. Norwegian says Norwegian Prima offers the largest variety of suite categories (13) for a large ocean ship, the largest three-bedroom suites of any new cruise vessels, as well as the brand’s largest-ever inside, ocean-view and balcony cabins.

The entire back of the ship is dedicated to an upscale, “ship-within-a-ship” private suite area called The Haven that rises eight decks high and includes 107 suites, a sprawling private indoor lounge area, private outdoor lounge and pool areas, and a private restaurant. Other vessels feature The Haven areas, but none as big as this one.

In addition, the public areas of Norwegian Prima feel more spacious than many of the other 17 ships in the Norwegian fleet. And, indeed, they are. Norwegian Prima was built with a higher ratio of space to passengers, which itself is an upscale touch.

Norwegian also says Norwegian Prima offers the most outdoor deck space of any new cruise ship — including more total pool deck space than any other ship in the brand’s fleet.

Breakaway Plus Class

Ships in class: Norwegian Encore (2019), Norwegian Bliss (2018), Norwegian Joy (2017), Norwegian Escape (2015).

Size: 164,600 to 169,145 tons.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s biggest vessels are its four new Breakaway Plus Class ships, the latest of which is the 4,004-passenger Norwegian Encore. NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

These are the Norwegian ships you go on if you’re a fan of megaresorts.

While not quite as big as Royal Caribbean’s giant Oasis Class ships, Norwegian’s Breakaway Plus Class vessels are firmly in the pantheon of the world’s cruising giants. They are the Norwegian ships most packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment and over-the-top attractions. There are so many of these things that you won’t be able to do it all in a single, weeklong cruise.

The Breakaway Plus ships are so big, in fact, that they have room for giant go-kart tracks and laser tag areas on their top decks (on all of the vessels in the series except Norwegian Escape). There’s also plenty of room to spare for multiple pools, waterslides and a kiddie splash zone.

Each of the vessels also offers real Broadway shows in big, state-of-the-art theaters; sprawling spas; casinos that fill half a deck; dedicated children’s play zones; and more than 2,000 rooms.

In addition, the two newest ships in this series, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy have large gaming and virtual reality zones called the Galaxy Pavilion.

The top deck of Norwegian Encore includes a sprawling go-kart track and an outdoor laser tag area. NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

For meals, you’ll find at least 20 venues on each of these ships, including multiple main dining rooms and a buffet that come with no extra charge and such extra-charge eateries as a teppanyaki restaurant, a steak house, a high-end French restaurant and a Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville at Sea.

With lots of family-friendly attractions such as the go-kart tracks and laser tag courses, these ships appeal heavily to families with children, particularly teens, but they draw a lot of couples, too. They are also popular with solo travelers, thanks to their unusually large complexes of cabins for one (something you’ll find on the Breakaway and Epic classes of ships, too).

Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian’s Latitudes Rewards loyalty program

All four of the Breakaway Plus ships have large, private, two-deck-high suite enclaves called The Haven that come with their own pool areas, restaurants and lounges. They’re some of the most spectacular suite complexes anywhere at sea.

The biggest of these ships, Norwegian Encore, measures 169,116 tons, making it the 18th biggest cruise ship in the world as of this story’s publishing (it will drop in the rankings over the coming years as additional megaships debut). That’s bigger than all but one Carnival ship and every Princess Cruises ship. Only Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises have a significant number of bigger vessels.

Norwegian Encore can hold more than 5,000 passengers with all berths filled.

Breakaway Class

Ships in class: Norwegian Getaway (2014), Norwegian Breakaway (2013).

Size: 145,655 tons.

These vessels are similar to the Breakaway Plus Class ships but slightly smaller. Or, put another way, the Breakaway Plus Class ships are a stretched version of the Breakaway Class ships.

You’ll find many of the same eateries, bars, lounges and entertainment venues on the Breakaway Class ships that you’ll find on the Breakaway Plus Class vessels. The slightly smaller size of these vessels means there’s just a tad less “stuff” on board.

The top decks of the Breakaway Class ships have two pool areas and water parks with waterslides, for instance — just like the Breakaway Plus Class ships. However, they don’t have go-kart tracks or laser tag courses. Instead of the latter attractions, you’ll find an adults-only pool area called Spice H2O at the back of the vessels. At night, it transforms into a dance club.

The Breakaway Class ships also boast full-size ropes courses on their top decks. Indeed, they were the first cruise ships ever to have such a feature. Other deck-top features include miniature golf courses on both vessels and basketball courts that double as volleyball courts.

Norwegian Breakaway waterslides

On the entertainment front, both ships offer Broadway shows in their main theaters and have a circus-like show in a secondary theater called Cirque Dreams. The latter is a dinner show that comes with an extra charge. They’re also home to Howl at the Moon dueling piano shows and a version of the Latin-themed dance show Burn the Floor.

Like the Breakaway Plus vessels, the Breakaway ships have large complexes for solo travelers, as well as large, private The Haven suite complexes.

In general, as with the Breakaway Plus ships, these vessels are best for vacationers who like a megaresort-type experience, and they appeal heavily to families with children who love all their deck-top attractions. Each of the two ships in this series — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — holds about 4,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Epic Class

Ships in class: Norwegian Epic (2010).

Size: 155,873 tons.

Norwegian Epic sailing into Port Miami. NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

Norwegian Epic is an outlier in the Norwegian fleet. Unveiled in 2010, it was originally supposed to be the first of a series of up to three similar vessels. However, after disagreements with the shipyard that built it, Norwegian eventually canceled an order for a second ship in the series and an option for a third ship in the series, leaving Norwegian Epic in a class of one.

While roughly comparable in size to the Breakaway Plus and Breakaway class ships (it’s a bit smaller than the former vessels and a bit bigger than the latter vessels), Norwegian Epic has a notably different design that includes some unique features.

Perhaps most notably, balcony cabins on the ship have an unusual design that includes curved walls, rounded bed corners, and a sink and vanity area that is in the main living space (for all to see), separate from a closed-off toilet area. The toilet area is behind a translucent door that some cruisers find less private than they had hoped.

Norwegian Epic is also home to the only tube-and-bowl waterslide at sea and has such rare-for-cruise-ships attractions as a rappelling wall and a three-lane bowling alley. It also features an ice bar where customers wear parkas while sipping drinks.

The Epic Plunge on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic is a tube-and-bowl-type waterslide. NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

Still, Norwegian Epic also offers a lot that will be familiar to Norwegian fans, including many of the line’s signature restaurants, bars and entertainment.

Standout features on Norwegian Epic include a water park with some of the most over-the-top waterslides at sea (including the aforementioned tube-and-bowl slide). It also offers a version of the Broadway show “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” in its main theater and a circus-like dinner show called Cirque Dreams in a secondary theater.

In addition, Norwegian Epic has the line’s biggest solo cabin complex (with 128 rooms for one) and a giant The Haven private suite complex.

At 155,873 tons, Norwegian Epic currently ranks as the 29th biggest cruise vessel in the world. Notably, it was the world’s third-largest ship when it debuted in 2010. That tells you just how much the cruise industry has grown in recent years.

It carries 4,100 passengers at double occupancy.

Jewel Class

Ships in class: Norwegian Gem (2007), Norwegian Jade (2006), Norwegian Pearl (2006), Norwegian Jewel (2005).

Size: About 93,500 tons.

Are you unsure if you want to sail on a megaship with 4,000 or more people but still want a vessel with a good amount of features and activities? The Jewel Class ships may be the perfect solution.

At 93,500 tons, the four vessels in the series are nearly 50% smaller than the line’s Breakaway Plus Class ships but still big enough that they have a lot to offer.

Each of the vessels has more than a dozen food venues, including three main restaurants, a casual buffet, a steak house, a French restaurant and a teppanyaki eatery.

You’ll also find multiple pools on each of the ships, along with whirlpools, basketball courts and golf driving nets. Each of the ships also has a theater, spa, casino, and multiple bars and lounges.

What you won’t find on the ships, because of their smaller size, are all the gee-whiz attractions such as go-kart tracks, laser tag courses and large water-park areas that Norwegian has put on its bigger vessels. If you can’t live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, then the Jewel Class probably isn’t for you.

Note that Norwegian Gem does have a climbing wall and a single waterslide. Norwegian Pearl has a climbing wall but no waterslide. Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Jade have neither of the attractions.

Each of the Jewel Class ships holds around 2,400 passengers at double occupancy (plus a few hundred more with every berth filled). That’s about 40% fewer passengers than you’ll find on the biggest Norwegian ships.

That makes them perfect for cruisers who want to get away from the sort of crowds that are on the biggest megaships without giving up many of the amenities that big ships have to offer.

Pride of America Class

Ships in class: Pride of America (2005).

Size: 80,439 tons.

Pride of America
Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America sails year-round in Hawaii. NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

Like Norwegian Epic, Pride of America is an outlier in the Norwegian fleet. In fact, it’s perhaps an even bigger outlier than the former vessel.

Sporting a patriotic U.S. theme (you’ll find venues named after Thomas Jefferson and John Adams), and a distinct array of lounges and entertainment, it’s a ship specifically designed to sail year-round in Hawaii — the only one of its kind at any line.

Pride of America notably flies a U.S. flag and operates with a mostly U.S. crew, in keeping with regulations governing cruise itineraries that only include U.S. ports. That’s a big difference from any other big cruise vessel in the world.

It’s also the only Norwegian vessel without a casino, in keeping with local Hawaii regulations.

If you sail on Pride of America, you’ll find such one-of-a-kind eateries as the classic American car-themed Cadillac Diner. You’ll also find some of Norwegian’s signature offerings, including a Cagney’s steak house and Italian eatery La Cucina. The ship’s other onboard attractions include a showroom, lounges, bars and a top deck with extensive open-air pool and sun lounging areas.

Thanks to its ownership of Pride of America, Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single, seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului. The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Dawn Class

Ships in class: Norwegian Dawn (2002), Norwegian Star (2001).

Size: 92,250 and 91,740 tons.

The 2,340-passenger Norwegian Dawn. SHUTTERSTOCK

The Dawn Class ships are similar to the Jewel Class ships in size and amenities, with a few differences.

Like the former vessels, the Dawn Class ships have around a dozen food-serving venues, including three main restaurants, a casual buffet, a Brazilian churrascaria (barbecue) restaurant, a French restaurant and a teppanyaki eatery.

You’ll also find multiple pools on each of the ships, whirlpools, basketball courts and golf driving nets. Each of the ships also has a theater, spa, casino, and multiple bars and lounges.

Like the Jewel Class ships, the Dawn Class vessels lack the sort of big attractions such as go-kart tracks and large water parks found on bigger Norwegian vessels. In addition, there are no Broadway musicals on Dawn Class ships, and they don’t have a private The Haven suite area (though they do have several giant suites called Garden Villas that measure more than 6,000 square feet).

If you can’t live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, then the Dawn Class probably isn’t for you.

Sun Class

Ships in class: Norwegian Sun (2001), Norwegian Sky (1999).

Size: 78,309 and 77,104 tons.

Some older Norwegian Cruise Line ships, such as the 77,104-ton Norwegian Sky, are less than half the size of the line’s newer vessels. NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

Dating to 2001 and 1999, respectively, Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Sky are among the smallest ships at Norwegian. They offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line’s vessels.

In general, they appeal to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience on a cruise ship than what you’ll find on the big Norwegian ships. They also draw cruisers who care more about the destinations that they visit on a cruise than onboard attractions.

On each of the vessels, you’ll find more than half a dozen eateries, including several main dining rooms, a casual buffet, a diner-style pub, a steak house, an Italian trattoria and a French bistro.

On their top decks, the ships have pools (one on Sun, two on Sky), whirlpools, a basketball court that doubles as a volleyball court, golf driving nets and a jogging track. The ships also have casinos and theaters with nightly shows.

Unlike most bigger Norwegian ships, neither of the vessels has a private The Haven suite complex or solo cabins.

Leo Class

Ships in class: Norwegian Spirit (1998).

Size: 75,904 tons.

Dating to 1998, Norwegian Spirit is Norwegian’s smallest and oldest ship, and — like the line’s Sun Class ships — it generally appeals to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience than you’ll find on the big Norwegian ships.

At 75,904 tons, Norwegian Spirit is less than half the size of Norwegian’s biggest ships, and it carries just 1,966 passengers — more than 2,000 fewer than the Norwegian biggies.

It also offers fewer (but still quite a few) venues and attractions. In all, you’ll find 13 food outlets on board, including two main restaurants, a casual buffet eatery, and versions of the line’s signature Cagney’s steak house and French eatery Le Bistro. There are more than half a dozen bars and cafes.

Deck-top attractions include several pools, whirlpools, waterslides, a basketball court and a jogging track. The ship also has a casino, spa, nightclub and theater.

Of note, Norwegian Spirit originally was built for Asia-based Star Cruises (where it was called SuperStar Leo).

Solo Travel VS Group Travel: Pros and Cons To Choose The Best

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Solo Travel VS Group Travel: Pros and Cons To Choose The Best

When it comes to traveling, we all have different things that we’re looking for. For some, it’s about meeting and touring new places with like-minded people. The thought of eating alone in a restaurant probably terrifies some travelers — but, for others, it’s all about getting away from their daily routine. Others still are looking for both culture and company, or even just a place where they can be truly alone and let loose. Let’s look at the pros and cons of solo travel vs group travel.

Solo Versus Group Travel

Solo Travel VS Group Travel

Solo travel, as the name suggests involves traveling alone at your own pace, while group travel involves traveling with friends, family, or in groups arranged by a travel agency. Traveling solo and traveling in a group each has its pros and cons.

Traveling improves our perspectives and experiences of the world around us. We all have different things we are looking for on our adventure; some people want to get away from their daily life and routine, and others want culture and to be with others like them. Many people, however, simply want to find a place where they can truly let go and be themselves. The adventure doesn’t have to be traveling from place to place; it can be found in a new city or even in the person sitting next to you on an airplane or train. Everyone looks for a different experience when they travel so traveling solo and traveling in a group each have their pros and cons.

Solo Traveling

" controls="controls" width="100%" height="150">

Pros

The world is your oyster

You get to set the pace at which you want to travel and decide the budget and places you want to see and stay at. The world becomes your oyster and you get to decide which places catch your fancy and which sights bore you to death. You are the one calling all the shots, and if you are like me who likes waking up late, you won’t have to wake up when it’s still dark outside.

Great chance at self-discovery

You get to discover yourself. It might sound like a cliché at first used in a million movies and soppy self-help books. But everything about this statement is true. Solo traveling is a great way to discover yourself and become at peace with yourself. Solo traveling tests help you reflect on your life and see yourself in a new light. You get to test your strengths and overcome your weaknesses while traveling solo. Your planning, finances, punctuality, and ability to handle pressure are all put to the test.

Befriend other solo travelers

You end up meeting cool and interesting people during your solo adventures. Meeting other travelers thus becomes a huge part of the appeal of traveling alone for some people. Many single travelers seem to end up in the same places, so you’ll have the opportunity to meet individuals who share your passions. You can accompany them for some fun conversations to not become a complete loner, then go back to your room.

Cons

You might feel lonely

If you’re an extrovert who hates the idea of being alone, solo travel can be challenging. You might start overthinking and get anxious about the idea of traveling. You might start feeling homesick, and traveling might start feeling more like a chore than an adventure. There will be many days where you will spend all day alone and return to your hotel room and sleep alone. So be aware.

Safety can be a challenge

Safety becomes a concern when traveling alone. Independent travelers are more likely to be the victims of muggings, pickpocketing, attacks, and other crimes since they seem to appear more defenseless. Getting hurt, sick, and lost are all scary situations that no one wants to experience.

That’s where the monitoring apps come in handy. XNSPY is one such app that has a geolocation tracking feature which makes it a great option. The app’s remote tracking option allows users to view the real-time location of their loved ones. So if you are on a solo adventure through the lush fields of Dover or the deep mountains of Iceland, it is to become lost while taking in the beautiful view. Your loved ones can utilize the XNSPY’s cell phone tracker without installing it on the target phone and know your exact location. They will also be able to track your location history in all of the places and check the time and date stamps for each location remotely. This tracking app for smartphones can be a lifesaver when you are in a remote area and feel your safety may be in danger.

Group Travel

Pros

Group Travel is Cheaper

Traveling in a group can be economical as most agencies design special discounts for group trips. Most tourist resorts and hotels offer special discounts as part of a large traveling group. Even basic things like sharing a room become cheaper. Not to mention you get to split the bill when you order the local delicacies.

You have someone to share the experience with

When you travel with other people, you always have someone to share your good times with. For many people, this is the most enjoyable aspect of traveling. There is always someone to keep you occupied in activities. You get to share a hearty laugh, exchange tales, and create new memories. Do you need someone to photograph you in front of a monument? Or perhaps you need someone to assist you in translating the menu? Or someone to hold your phone and wallet while you take a dip in the lake. These are just a few of the advantages of traveling with great company.

It’s safer to travel as a group.

You feel safe when traveling together as a group. It’s not just a psychological relief but a fact. You are less likely to become a victim of mugging or pickpocketing when you’re not traveling alone.

Cons

No alone time

You might not get much alone time when you travel in a group. It becomes quite an uncomfortable situation if you are someone like me who likes their privacy. You might get nagged into joining the group for a game of beach volleyball or a strenuous hike when you only want to chill by the hotel pool.

You might not get along with everyone

If you don’t get along with someone in the group, traveling with them won’t make you best friends overnight. Everyone involved may feel awkward and uncomfortable as a result. You have to travel to know someone. And this can be both good and bad.

Clash of interests

Not everyone shares the same interests and passions. It is true when in a group as well. Having to force yourself to partake in group activities can be tiresome. Your pals want to visit the local museum, but you prefer to see the ocean view next to the cliffs. It can be challenging in a group, and both parties need to compromise.

Traveling can be a joyous experience and be enjoyed as a group or as a solo mission. You need to be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of each before you pack your bags. This guide can be essential when planning your next vacation and should please both the lone wolf and group travelers.

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

11 Features To Look For In A Real Estate Investing App

Technology integration in real estate is fast changing how people invest in this lucrative market. Property technology firms are looking for ways to offer better solutions for starting or expanding investors’ portfolios. You can access the latest development projects and decide whether or not to buy into the market.

Real estate investing apps like Concreit make investing in real estate more accessible and approachable. They bridge the information gaps in the real estate market and can help you save time and money looking for investment opportunities. In addition, you can manage your portfolio on intelligent devices, such as smartphones.

However, there are risks and rewards to investing in real estate through mobile apps. You must research beforehand to ensure you’re on the right track when building a portfolio. Alternatively, you can consult real estate lawyers or wealth managers for guidance in navigating the vast real estate landscape.

So, what features should you look for in a real estate investing app? Find out below.

Melbourne, Australia – Jul 27, 2020: Browsing properties for sale in UKInvestor Onboarding

A real estate investing app is a tool that helps you leverage the opportunities available in the market. It should have an easy-to-use interface that simplifies investing or navigating the platform.

The ideal application allows you to create and use an account on any mobile device. Additionally, you should be able to use multiple access terminals when viewing your real estate investment.

Profile Development

A real estate investing platform should follow the same procedure as opening an account with financial institutions or social media platforms. It should allow you to create a profile depending on the nature of your investing strategy and preferences.

Moreover, security protocols must be in place to protect your portfolio from breaches or fraud. Also, it should differentiate between buyers and sellers stacking cash in the real estate markets. It helps you choose which category you’re aiming for and who you can approach if you want to purchase a property.

Real Estate Database

The ideal real estate investing app should save you from reading through several advertisements concerning the best deals in the real estate market. They should provide a database of available properties and give detailed insights into trending investing opportunities. By reading through the property profile, you’ll obtain ample information to choose which real estate property to add to your portfolio.

In addition, the user can view the property history showing the list of owners and the type of lease or sale agreement. But you must research further to counter check the authenticity of documents and information provided on the platform.

Property Valuation

Real estate investment requires an analytical review of a property’s sales, costs, and projected income. It can generate reports that may help you secure asset finance facilities from lenders.

Aside from acquiring loans to support your investment goals, this feature can help you determine the best investment strategy, such as whether to opt for a commercial or residential property. Also, it simplifies your work when you want to dispose of your assets by sidelining brokers and property valuers.

Maps show the location of each property up for sale in the real estate market. They provide valuable data and statistics on properties that can help you in decision-making.

Moreover, you can further research the property locations and compare government reports, such as security and economic activities in the area. You’ll avoid volatile areas and save money for other upcoming opportunities.

If you’re looking to invest in another country, you may consider progressive countries with a stable market. You might want to look into the residency by investment program, wherein investing in real estate can help you gain permanent residency in your country of choice.

Cost Calculator

A cost calculator is an essential feature in an investing app due to the underlying payment attached to properties in the market. They can help estimate the realistic prices of assets you intend to include in your portfolio.

This feature allows you to calculate tax rates, loan interests, and repayment schedules. Also, the platform typically charges a minimal fee to support the services it provides.

Property Details

The real estate market has a mix of existing properties and upcoming or under-construction projects for you. The real estate investing app should enable users to view photos, videos, neighborhood information, and other details describing the property.

This feature can help in decision-making since you want to pivot your investments to get maximum returns in the future.

Transaction Records

Transaction records are crucial components of investing in the real estate market. They provide reliable documentation to prove ownership of assets you acquire as you build your profile.

In addition, the real estate investing app should give you various payment options, such as digital currency, bank transfer, or online payment services. This makes investing faster and more convenient.

Filter And Categories

Searching for properties in the market can be challenging for you if you don’t know where to start. An investing app will save you the headache of going through every item posted by realtors and other advertising media.

It’s advisable to select real estate assets that add value to your portfolio. Filter and categories help simplify your search for investment properties.

Use Of Electronic Signature

An electronic signature feature is an added advantage to investors who are too busy to physically sign asset purchase documents. Aside from reducing turnaround time for sale processes, using electronic signatures is more secure than conventional paper signatures, which may be tampered with or forged.

The beauty of electronic signatures is that they have many layers of security to safeguard your portfolio from fraudsters.

Real Estate Education And Insights

Some real estate platforms feature educational tools that help investors further their knowledge about real estate investing. This feature is ideal for novice investors or those who wish to learn the basics before taking the plunge. It’s also more cost-effective than enrolling in real estate courses or signing up for conferences.

You can access articles about diverse real estate topics and network with seasoned investors.

Final Thoughts

Using real estate investing apps can reduce the cumbersome processes involved in transactions. They eliminate intermediaries or brokers who can derail you when building your portfolio. However, you must look for all-in-one apps with features critical to investing in the real estate market. It’s crucial to research first before including them in your investment strategy.

7 Things to Think About Before Moving to LA

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

7 Things to Think About Before Moving to LA

If you’re thinking about moving to Los Angeles, there’s a lot you need to think about. The city is changing rapidly, and it’s not always for the better. The good news is that even as it changes, it’s still an exciting place to live and work for many people. Here are some things to think about before you pack your bags and head out west.

1. The traffic really is that bad

If you’re worried about traffic, you probably have a valid reason. It’s really that bad. Rush hour sucks, but it’s not just a morning and evening thing; traffic can be bad at any time of day, not just at peak hours.

Even if you’re not driving during rush hour, there’s still plenty of other reasons for panic when thinking about LA traffic. Weekends are typically slow due to beachgoers heading in and out of town, summer is brutal because everyone wants to escape from their rat-race lives into suburbia, and the list goes on.

If you decide you can’t be without a car, you’ll want to consider something like a monthly parking company so you can find a place to park it during the day when you’re at work. Public transport isn’t for everyone, so monthly parking rentals are a great option!

2. There are a ton of great restaurants

If you love food, LA is the place to be. There are countless great restaurants in Los Angeles—and they’re everywhere. You’ll find awesome hole-in-the-wall places; fancy restaurants with Michelin stars; and everything in between. Some of them are old school, while others are super modern or hipster cool. No matter what kind of food you like, there’s something for everyone!

It’s not all about fancy sit-down dinners either: LA has an amazing selection of street carts that serve up everything from tacos and burritos to bagels and burgers, as well as a ton of trucks selling Korean BBQ tacos (my personal favorite) or fresh fruit smoothies (for those who aren’t looking for something heavy).

For those who prefer to cook their own meals or socialize over dinner parties rather than fast-casual restaurants, there are dozens of farmers markets offering fresh produce and specialty foods (including some excellent vegan options). And then there’s also an abundance of farm-to-table restaurants that serve as both showcases for local growers as well as destinations in themselves—many of them on rooftops where you can take in amazing views while enjoying your meal!

3. Hollywood is the least interesting part of the city

If you’re looking to live in Hollywood, it’s best to think of yourself as an honorary Angeleno. Yes, the iconic sign is there and yes you might be able to see it from your bedroom window. But that doesn’t mean that living in Hollywood is all there is to Los Angeles.

The Sunset Strip has some great bars and restaurants, but if you want to go out at night I’d recommend checking out other neighborhoods like Downtown or Silver Lake. If hiking is more your thing then head over to Runyon Canyon Park – it has great views of both Downtown LA and Hollywood Hills. And if you’re into surfing, check out Malibu!

4. The weather is amazing

When you’re moving to a new city, the weather is one of the first things you think about. And for good reason! The weather in Los Angeles is incredible—you’ll never want to leave when you have blue skies, ocean breezes, and palm trees galore.

You don’t have to deal with snow, rain, or even cold—and it’s a great place to live if you’re into outdoor activities like hiking and biking.

But it’s also important to consider the flip side of this benefit: LA has almost no seasons (except for the occasional earthquake). If you’re used to changing seasons and weather patterns, LA might not be for you.

5. The cost of living is higher than many other cities in the US

Moving to LA is expensive—and not just in terms of the cost of your new home.

If you’re moving from out of state, you’ll need to pay for the travel expenses of yourself and your family members, as well as any movers who help you move. And if you’re moving from another city within California, there’s a good chance that the cost of living will be higher than where you came from.

If you’re planning on moving to LA, make sure you have enough money to cover your expenses while you’re looking for work if you don’t already have a job lined up.

6. Your skills will be needed, so bring them to town

If you’re thinking about moving to Los Angeles, you should know that your skills are going to be needed here. I’m not just talking about the obvious stuff like being a good actor or writer—I mean the more specialized skills that are less common in other parts of the country.

For example, if you’re an expert at making sausage or curing olives, you’ll probably find a job quickly here. And if you have experience working with animals—whether it’s horses, dogs, or even llamas—you can make some money while doing something fun!

7. It’s worth it!

All in all, the pros of moving to Los Angeles outweigh the cons. The city has so much to offer and there are more than enough things to do that you can find something fun on any given day. If you’re looking for a place where you can live your best life, LA is definitely worth a look – you won’t regret it despite some of the drawbacks above.

Wrapping Up

As we’ve covered, moving to Los Angeles has lots of upsides. There are lots of things to see and do and it’s a great place to work if you’re in the right field. Also, with so many people coming in every day, there’s plenty of opportunity to meet new people and make friends! So if your skills are needed in this city—and they probably are—then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t take advantage of what LA has to offer.

10 Amazon Prime Day competitor deals for travelers

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

If you know me, then you know there are few things I love more than avoiding shopping at full price, which is why I am particularly excited about this week.

Tuesday marks the start of this year’s second Amazon Prime Day, officially known as the Prime Early Access sale, which runs over the next two days. Starting Oct. 11 at 3 a.m. EDT, through 2:59 a.m. Oct. 12, Prime members have access to Amazon sales: Think of it as a precursor to Black Friday, with exclusive savings for Prime members only.

But there’s no need to fret if you are not a Prime member; there are other ways to save. In fact, multiple retailers, including Target, Best Buy and Nordstrom, are currently running competition sales ahead of Black Friday, the traditional sale of all sales which occurs the day after Thanksgiving.

For example, all eligible Target products purchased from Oct. 6-Dec. 24 offer a holiday price match guarantee if the item lowers in price throughout that period. During Ulta Beauty’s Gorgeous Hair Event, currently running through Oct. 22, you can save 50% off Daily Beauty Steals for three straight weeks, which I partook in this weekend by restocking my favorite travel-size shampoo and conditioner.

In preparation for the next two days, we’ve rounded up 10 of the best competitor deals for travelers from other retailers where you can save even more money.

In This Post

Tech and accessories

Apple Watch Series 8 GPS 41mm, $349 at Walmart

Apple Watch Series 8 GPS. WALMART.COM

The one accessory I wear every day, without fail, is my Apple Watch Nike+ Series 4, which I’ve had for three years now. I love it so much that I am considering upgrading my older version. I’m looking at the Apple Watch Series 8, which is currently on sale for $349, marked down from $399. The sport band is on sale in four colors — midnight, red, silver and starlight (white).

Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable (1 meter), $18.97 at Walmart

Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable. WALMART.COM

One of my favorite ways to explore a place when traveling is by walking through the various neighborhoods a city has to offer. I love tracking my steps via my Apple Watch. I can only do this if my watch is charged, which is why I always pack my Apple Watch charger in my suitcase — you’ll need to charge this watch daily as you do with a phone. A 1-meter charging cable is currently available from Walmart for just under $19, compared to its usual price of $27.98. Just remember to pack a USB-C power adapter compatible with Apple devices, such as this one, also currently on sale from Walmart.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Bluetooth Smartwatch, $339.99 at Target

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4. TARGET.COM

If you are not an Apple person but are very much a watch person, consider an alternative — the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Bluetooth Smartwatch, available in black and silver for $339.99, marked down from $379.99. With a round stainless steel face, this watch offers a slightly more upscale look than Apple’s sport band watch. It includes many of the same tools as the iOS device, such as an auto workout detector and advanced run coaching, while also being water resistant. Plus, with some cool features lacking from the Apple Watch, like body composition analysis and a multiday battery, this watch is one to consider for your next trip or day-to-day wear.

Apple AirPods (2nd Generation) Wireless Earbuds, $99.99 at Best Buy

Apple AirPods (2nd Generation). BESTBUY.COM

Is there anything worse than boarding your flight and realizing that you either forgot your headphones or they’re not charged? The answer for many of us, is no, given the prospect of our seatmate striking up a conversation, fueled by the lack of headphones. Headphones are essential for any traveler, and Apple’s AirPods are known for providing hands-free access to your iPhone thanks to a wireless connection, high-quality audio and five-hour battery life. Although these are certainly not the newest or longest-lasting AirPods available, their $99 price tag allows you to save $30. As is the case with all AirPods, these include a charging case.

Apple AirTag (4 Pack), $99.99 at Target

Apple AirTags. AMAZON.COM

We would be remiss in failing to include a holy grail Apple product in this tech roundup — the Apple AirTag. If you’ve been living under a rock, AirTags are widely used, among TPG staffers and readers alike, to track bags, suitcases and other items you don’t want to lose when traveling, or in daily life.

To use, simply attach the Bluetooth tracking device to anything you own to passively keep track of its location. Your AirTag will ping when there is a nearby Apple device, whether it be your iPhone or someone else’s iPhone or iPad. If your checked bag is attached to an AirTag, it will ping its location off that iPhone and report the location back to you, which you can view in the Find My app alongside your iOS devices.

While AirTags are not included in October’s Prime Early Access sale, you can find them for their regular price at a variety of retailers, including Target ($99.99 for a pack of four or $29.99 for one).

Wasserstein Apple AirTag Holder PU Leather Keychain (2 Pack), $15.99 at Target

Wasserstein Apple AirTag holder. TARGET.COM

One of the best things about the AirTags is their size, slightly larger than a quarter, but that does make it easy to lose or drop them by mistake when shoving them into your purse or elsewhere. To protect yourself from losing an affordable yet essential item, consider purchasing an AirTag holder, such as this keychain and protective case cover from Wassertstein, on sale for $15.99, reduced from $39.99.

Its chic design, available in brown and blue, helps keeps your AirTags protected from dust and scratches while easily attaching to your bag, keys and other important items.

Wasserstein Pet Collar AirTag Holder for Apple AirTag (2 Pack), $14.99 at Target

Wasserstein pet collar AirTag holder. TARGET.COM

If you are worried about keeping track of your furry friends, look no further than the Wasserstein Pet Collar AirTag Holder, on sale at Target for $14.99, down from $29.99. Similar to the above AirTag holder, this one is designed to attach to your pet’s collar.

Luggage and backpacks

Freeform Carry-On Spinner, $159.99 at Samsonite

Freeform Carry-On Spinner. SAMSONITE.COM

Samsonite products are tried and true, which makes the Freeform carry-on bag, on sale for $159.99 through Oct. 18, marked down from $200, hard to pass up. Plus, you can save an extra 15% on your purchase by using the code “FALL15” if you purchase by midnight PDT on Oct. 12.

As the newest lightweight offering from the luggage giant, the expandable suitcase, measuring 21 1/4 by 15 1/4 by 10 inches, is marketed as a carry-on suitable for international travel, but be sure to check the specific luggage requirements of your airline. With a limited 10-year global warranty and weighing 6 1/2 pounds, this extremely lightweight suitcase features 360-degree spinner wheels and a Transportation Security Administration-compatible lock.

Voltage DLX Carry-On Spinner, $151.99 at Samsonite

Voltage DLX Carry-On Spinner. SAMSONITE.COM

For those looking for a carry-on for domestic travel, consider Samsonite’s Voltage DLX carry-on, on sale through Oct. 18 at a reduced price of $152, plus an extra 15% off using the code “FALL 15” for purchases made by midnight PDT on Oct. 12. With a built-in USB port, this suitcase is ideal for business and leisure travelers alike. Measuring 22 by 14 by 9 inches, it adheres to most carry-on policies for domestic carriers, including American, Delta and United. Bonus points for the bag’s integrated WetPak pocket, which helps you keep liquids and toiletries contained without fear of leakage.

Marc Jacobs Quilted Backpack, $129.97 at Nordstrom Rack

Marc Jacobs Quilted Backpack. NORDSTROMRACK.COM

For my fellow carry-on-only travelers out there, having a good backpack to bring on board is absolutely key. From one of my favorite attainable designers, Marc Jacobs, comes this black quilted backpack which, at 11 by 6 by 14 inches, will fit under the seat in front of you. This bag is not only practical, with dual adjustable shoulder straps, but it also elevates your travel style with its smooth transition from the plane to your hotel and everything in between. Grab yours now, currently half its usual price at Nordstrom Rack.

Bottom line

If you shop the above brands and stores, or score any other deals, you’ll want to make sure you’re using a credit card that maximizes your online purchases, such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited for 1.5% cash back on non-bonus spending, or the Blue Cash Everday Card® from American Express for 3% cash back on U.S. online retail purchases, on up to $6,000 per year and then 1% after that.

Be sure to read on for the best credit cards to use for the specific retailers mentioned:

Rest assured, this week’s Prime sale and the others mentioned in this guide are just the start of sales to come this holiday season. We will be sure to update you on the must-have travel products with each one.

5 Aviation Innovations that are Changing the Aviation Industry

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

5 Aviation Innovations that are Changing the Aviation Industry

The aviation industry is constantly evolving. With its strong focus on safety and regulation, and long development times for aircraft, changes sometimes appear slower than in other industries. There are many current innovations and new technologies, however, that are set to make big changes to the industry. The following are five of the most important.

Development of electric power

There is a lot of discussion in the aviation industry about future power sources and propulsion for aircraft. While we are a long way off seeing a large commercial aircraft powered with stored electricity, hydrogen, or even nuclear power, changes are underway to reduce the way aviation fuel is used.

Electric propulsion is the furthest ahead today, and the one most likely to make a difference soon. The challenge here is with the weight of batteries required, and this will limit large-scale use for some time. There are plenty of smaller scale advances, however.

Smaller aircraft are already flying, and size will increase as technology develops. Cessna, for example, has launched the 9 seat eCaravan, and the Scandinavian airline Widerøe is working to develop a 12-seat electric commercial jet by around 2026.

“Air-taxis” are another ongoing development. Several companies now have proposals or early prototypes for electric vertical take off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. These will carry small loads over short distances, with possibilities for corporate, cargo, or passenger taxi services. Governance and legislation changes here could be as challenging as the technology.

rtificial Intelligence in the aviation industry

We are seeing the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in most industries. In aviation, there are plenty of ways AI is being used now, and plenty more likely in the near future.

Many parts of the industry create large amounts of data and AI is being used to better understand this and make future improvements. This ranges from customer behaviour and analytics, revenue management, and flight scheduling to aircraft performance and fuel efficiency.

There are many examples of this in active use. In the area of customer data, United Airlines has implemented an extensive system to monitor customer profiles and activities. It claims this has led to a revenue increase of around 15%. With aircraft maintenance, “predictive maintenance” techniques are being used by many airlines to optimise resources during maintenance, and to better understand which parts need attention.

The introduction of ADS-B technology

Aircraft and ATC communications have not changed significantly for decades. Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) technology is starting to change this and will have many implications over the coming years.

The technology allows aircraft to determine their position from satellites and then transmit this (along with other operating information) to ATC on the ground. This will result in more accurate and complete ATC information, and coverage in previous hard to reach areas and aids with flight planning. This will not just improve safety; it will also, ultimately, improve efficiency. Aircraft will be able to be tracked all the time, and positioned closer. This will lead to more efficient routings for transatlantic and transpacific flights in particular.

ADS-B can also receive information as well as transmit. This will facilitate more accurate onboard information, such as weather conditions, airspace updates, or details of other aircraft.

Virtual Reality

It is early days for Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in the aviation industry. However, this rapidly improving technology has many applications under development.

It can be used to improve the passenger experience on the ground and in the air. Gatwick Airport, for example, has trialled an AR system to help passengers navigate through the airport. Onboard, there are huge possibilities for much more engaging entertainment systems. Replacing traditional systems with just VR headsets could also be lighter – always an important consideration. There have been trials so far with many airlines – including British Airways, Iberia, and Qatar Airways.

There are also many applications for staff use and training. There have been several cases of use for flight crew and pilot training. There are possibilities too in areas such as ATC and aircraft maintenance.

New airport technology – improving security, and passenger experience

The airport experience is set to improve with new technologies over the coming years. This will be especially welcome given the delays and staff shortages seen at airports in 2022. Many of these will make travel more secure – but critically will also speed up the airport experience.

Biometrics is already being used for check-in and immigration in several countries, and use of this will expand. Further integration with mobile platforms will lead to more ticket (and boarding pass) free travel. As just one major example, British Airways has recently expanded biometric boarding (with automated face recognition) from domestic trials in the UK to international routes to the US.

The COVID pandemic expedited several schemes to use monitoring technology to help congestion and social distancing in airports. This can also be used to monitor and route passengers through the airport efficiently.

Beacons technology is another emerging innovation that will help guide passengers through the airport. This uses Bluetooth signals from fixed devices around the airport to track and guide passengers using personalised apps and AR.

Security checks are set to improve too. Regulations have changed faster than passenger and baggage screening technologies. This has led to the situation currently where passengers need to remove electronics, liquids and often even shoes. Especially when coupled with staff shortages recently, this is a major bottleneck. New millimetre scanners are already offering improvement for body scanning, and new CT-based technology under development will allow much faster baggage screening.

Final Thoughts

There are many things underway in the aviation industry that will lead to change over the coming years. These are some of the main ones to look for, especially with the impacts on the passenger experience and the increasingly important focus on efficiency.

An exclusive look inside the $160,000-a-seat private Boeing 757 charter, with just 48 first-class seats

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Want to see whale sharks, Bengal tigers, lemurs, gorillas and the Big Five on a single three-week trip?

You could visit a few zoos, or you could see them all (as well as many more of the world’s most exotic animals) in their natural habitats on a whirlwind, around-the-world journey with famed luxury tour outfitter Abercrombie & Kent.

Prefer taking in the world’s cultural treasures or visiting multiple off-the-beaten-path destinations during a single trip? Abercrombie & Kent has a package for you, too. (It’s called the Cultural Treasures: Around the World by Private Jet 2023 tour.)

Whether you’re road-tripping or globetrotting, the suite life is always better. Download the free TPG App to upgrade your travel!

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

While A&K has long provided ground-based tours for nearly every type of trip you could envision, the company is (literally and figuratively) elevating the experience with its private jet journeys. These exclusive tours whisk you around the world in a private chartered jet, bringing you directly to the nature, culture and unique experiences that would otherwise require multiple flights, complicated transfers and a never-ending list of logistics.

For the right price, you can avoid all the hassles by joining an A&K private jet journey. While there’s no great way to redeem points for these $160,000 (or more) adventures, you’ll definitely get what you pay for — from the flights to the five-star resorts to the scrumptious meals, nearly everything is included with your fare.

map of journey
ABERCROMBIE & KENT

Now, with ticket prices that cost more than 16 trips in Emirates’ game-changer first-class suite, you might be dreaming about how you’ll fly across the globe.

Here’s your answer.

very special Boeing 757

While Abercrombie & Kent offers a few private jet journeys each year, the outfitter doesn’t actually own the planes. Instead, it wet leases a 22-year-old Boeing 757-200 from Icelandair.

As part of the agreement, Icelandair provides the flight crew, handles all the maintenance, arranges the catering and deals with all the flight-related logistics. Abercrombie & Kent tells Icelandair where to go, and the Keflavik-based carrier takes care of the rest.

The average traveler might not even realize that Icelandair is involved in the Abercrombie & Kent journey. You won’t find any of Icelandair’s Saga premium seats on board, nor will you see the airline’s new (or old) livery anywhere.

From the large Abercrombie & Kent logo plastered on the front of the jet to the signature ampersand and on the tail, this jet is distinctly Abercrombie & Kent. Plus, with A&K-branded carpets, headrest covers and magazines, there’s no question you’re traveling with the luxury tour provider.

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

But diving deeper reveals a different story.

For one, the jet’s TF-FIC registration code means that it’s registered in Iceland. Turns out, the plane used to fly commercially for Icelandair (as well as for Thomas Cook and American Trans Air, to name a few) before being converted into a VIP configuration and leased out to Abercrombie & Kent, as well as other luxury tour providers.

While the 12 Keflavik-based crew members are fluent in English, you’ll hear them communicating with each other in Icelandic. If you pick up the safety card, you’ll see that the aircraft operator is actually Icelandair.

Although Icelandair may not offer any lie-flat seats on its commercial jets, it’s a whole different story on this luxurious Boeing 757.

Featuring 48 first-class seats

As you ascend the air stairs attached to door 2L on the 757, you won’t have to worry about whether you’re turning left or right — the entire cabin features the exact same type of first-class seat.

interior plane
ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

(Since you’ll be flying to smaller airports and parking in the general aviation area, I’d expect that air stairs will be used at most, if not all, stops. Note that this could pose a problem for those with limited mobility.)

seats

The cream-colored, forward-facing leather seats are arranged in a 2-2 configuration across one large 12-row cabin.

For someone who’s never been on a private 757 before, it was pretty incredible to see such a sparse configuration. In contrast, Icelandair’s standard 757-200 cabin features 183 seats spread across 34 rows.

seats

With just 48 first-class seats, the cabin felt airy and spacious — unlike any other Boeing 757 I’ve flown before. Dare I say it, but the spacious configuration felt somewhat like flying on a wide-body.

While you won’t find some of the conveniences of a twin-aisle jet, such as large overhead bins, tall ceilings and wide cabins, this Boeing 757 is easily one of the most luxurious in the skies, and it offers quite a unique way to fly around the world.

That said, you will notice there is one big drawback of flying on a single-aisle 757: The fuel tanks aren’t large enough to store enough fuel for the longest journeys, so some of the transoceanic legs require a fuel stop or two. On the morning of TPG’s ground tour, the jet was preparing to fly from Seattle to Tokyo, but it needed to stop in Anchorage to refuel.

Spacious lie-flat seats

Though the plane doesn’t feature private suites with sliding doors, the 2-2 forward-facing configuration gives each passenger an incredible amount of personal space.

Similar to how I was pleasantly surprised when recently flying Delta’s used Airbus A350 (which features a forward-facing business-class cabin), the seats on this 757 are perfect for those looking to rest, recharge or relax. Plus, since many travelers on these expeditions are couples, the lack of privacy may not be much of an issue.

Each leather-padded recliner features a whopping 78 inches of pitch — roughly in line with what you’d find in most international first-class products.

Though Abercrombie & Kent markets these seats as first class, they’d likely be branded as business class by most airlines these days since they don’t have privacy doors or feature direct aisle access. That said, the cabin is quite intimate, and many of the touches feel unquestionably first class.

The seats themselves measure 19 inches wide with a nearly 6-inch-wide armrest separating the seats. There’s also a privacy shield that you can raise from the armrest if you’re looking to zone out.

The intuitive seat controls are built directly into the armrest and feature a few customization options and a massage feature.

You’ll find an ottoman built into the floor in front of you, similar to the one in Lufthansa first class. There’s an exposed storage area under each ottoman, which is the perfect place to store your shoes after changing into the provided slippers.

The sturdy wood-grain tray table pops out of the armrest with the push of a button. It measures 23 inches long and 16 inches wide — large enough to enjoy all your multicourse meals or catch up on some work while on board.

When it’s time to rest, one of the nine flight attendants will happily turn your seat into a fully-flat bed, which measures over 75 inches long when fully reclined. The open configuration without any constricting footwells feels much more spacious than what you’d find in most international business-class products.

During turndown service, the crew will place a thick mattress pad, plush duvet and down pillow on your bed, making it even easier to get comfortable.

There are four lavatories on board the aircraft — three near the back and one at the front of the plane.

Though none of them are oversized, they do feature some first-class touches, such as fresh flowers hanging from the mirrors, L’Occitane beauty products and terry hand towels to dry your hands.

No stone unturned

The first-class experience really takes off with the range of amenities offered along with the personalized service.

Waiting at your seat for each leg of the journey is a day pillow, Bose noise-canceling headphones, an amenity kit and a loaner iPad.

Due to supply chain issues, Abercrombie & Kent’s signature amenity kits weren’t available during our exclusive media preview, but we’re told to expect an assortment of luxury health and beauty products inside.

While there are no inflight entertainment screens at each seat, a provided iPad connects wirelessly to an onboard server to stream movies and TV shows. The jet is also equipped with satellite Wi-Fi, which is available free of charge throughout the journey.

Each pair of seats features three universal power outlets and USB-A ports — two next to the individual reading lamps and one just under the literature shelf near the ottoman.

During boarding, the crew hands out a leather-bound menu etched with the Abercrombie & Kent logo. Inside, you’ll find the food and drink menu, which is customized for each leg of the journey.

Lunch on the Seattle-to-Japan sector started with Dungeness crab, followed by either a grilled halibut or a lamb fillet as an entree, with a chocolate mousse for dessert.

A range of top-shelf liquors, wines, beers and ports is available, as is an assortment of soft drinks and juices. The 757 even features an espresso machine for all your caffeine needs.

You’ll find the full drink menus in the gallery below.

These aren’t just “regular” first-class airplane meals, either. There’s an onboard chef who travels with the group and can customize any dishes to your preferences. Prefer your steak cooked rare, or to eat just before landing? Just ask.

During boarding, you’ll receive a light bite consisting of a freshly dipped chocolate-covered strawberry, a macaron and a glass of Dom Perignon 2012.

Despite the plane being 22 years old, the cabin was as fresh as ever. I observed the crew using a dust buster in the aisles and in the crevices between each seat to pick up any small speck of dirt. It was clear that they were very excited about delivering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the passengers.

Speaking of the crew, there are nine flight attendants and three pilots on these missions, for a 1:5 crew-to-guest ratio. Expect the flight attendants to get to know your name and your preferences throughout the journey.

The cabin is entirely first-class seating with one exception: the crew seating.

The crew travels along with the plane, and on longer sectors, they sit in regular economy seats that are spread throughout the cabin. There are two recliner-style first-class seats located just behind the forward galley, which is where the pilots rest during their breaks.

Bottom line

With Abercrombie & Kent’s private jet trips, the journey matters just as much as the destination.

If you can afford the $160,000-a-seat expedition, you’ll enjoy a first-rate travel experience that tops many of the world’s best airlines. With an onboard chef whipping up five-star meals, spacious leather lie-flat seats and a no-hassles travel journey, you may never want to fly commercially again.

For everyone else, keep racking up the points for a trip in Emirates first class or Singapore Suites. These top-notch cabins may not be the same as a private Boeing 757 charter, but they’re about as close as you’ll come without the hundred-grand price tag.
