Lufthansa pilots have agreed not to strike again until 2023

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Lufthansa has struck a deal with its pilots to stave off any more strikes until at least next summer.

The carrier’s disgruntled staff members had threatened to walk out once again if Lufthansa did not meet their demands for a pay raise; this occurred two weeks after their last strike, which reportedly cost Lufthansa about $32 million.

The German flagship airline tabled a new offer of a monthly basic pay rise of $978 by April 2023, equaling a 20% wage bump for rookies and 5.5% for captains.

German pilots union Vereinigung Cockpit accepted the deal, promising a strike moratorium until June 30 next year.

The agreement also includes a comprehensive peace obligation until June 30, 2023. Strikes are excluded during this period. This gives customers and employees planning security, according to Lufthansa.

“Both collective bargaining partners will continue their constructive exchange on various topics during this time,” the airline said.

It said the small print of the deal will remain confidential and is “still subject to detailed formulation and approval by the responsible bodies.”

The news brings to an end a fraught few weeks for Germany’s largest airline.

Last Wednesday, the airline narrowly averted a strike by both the airline’s commercial and cargo pilots with an olive branch in the form of a new deal from Lufthansa. The strike was canceled to give both sides time to further evaluate the offer on the table.

If it had gone ahead, it would have been the second of its kind within a week; it would’ve followed the walkout on Sept. 4 which led to the cancellation of about 800 flights and affected some 130,000 travelers. Lufthansa said that action cost it $31.9 million.

Another strike would, Lufthansa said at the time, have had “massive consequences” for its flight plan.

Instead, the airline expressed its relief, adding that it can now concentrate on getting passengers to where they want to go, as planned and on time.

“We now want to use the next few months in a trusting dialogue with Vereinigung Cockpit to find and implement sustainable solutions,” the airline’s human resources and labor director Michael Niggemann added.

Theme Restaurants in NYC – Taking it Up a Notch

Theme restaurants can be a bit corny, with a negative connotation to them. Just thinking of going to one makes one feel you’ll be part of the herd that follows the marketing, corporate push to get people to visit these restaurants. And worse of all, be labeled as a ‘dumb tourist’ even if it’s in your hometown.

Maybe so! However, it really depends on where you go.

Why Going to Theme Restaurants in NYC is a Good Way to Experience Something Out of the Ordinary

I say, forget about it and join the herd of people that look for the DIFFERENT type of restaurants that you will never find anywhere other than the place you are visiting.

This is exactly what the Jekyll and Hyde Club is all about.

When I told my dad I’m taking the family out to Jekyll and Hyde, he immediately plopped his butt in front of the computer and started looking for reviews about it. Of course, when it comes to food they were mediocre, compared to the other insanely amazing restaurants NYC has to offer.

With that, he refused to go! Until I said, Jekyll and Hyde’s restaurant isn’t at all about the food, but 100% about the experience. And I promise you, you’ll have a time of your life.

And was I ever right.

Kid friendly restaurants in NYC aren’t as easy to find as one would think. Yes, there are thousands of places to eat here, but only a few that really make the night completely unforgettable – for kids and big kids.

That’s why this was my number one choice.

The ‘haunted’ restaurant is designed with artifacts to spook and freak you out, with live shows throughout the day. Randomly acted out. You never know what will be the next show, keeping you in suspense.

15 best cruise ship bars

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

The best bars on cruise ships are more than just places to drink. They are destinations with atmosphere and attitude — plus creative approaches to sipping.

You may have your drink prepared by a robot or by a human in a chamber kept at 17 degrees Fahrenheit, in a bar that levitates or while you “travel” through hyperspace.

Whether you are a fan of the perfect martini or craft beer or looking for mixologists who concoct molecular cocktails that sizzle or smoke, check out these cruise ship bar favorites.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter

Fortune Teller

Exclusively on Carnival Cruise Line’s 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras, the Fortune Teller stands out for its cool New Orleans vibe. It’s located in the big ship’s French Quarter (where Chef Emeril Lagasse also has his first seagoing bistro) and features creative drinks, Victorian decor and a voodoo allure. Drinks change color, smoke or otherwise impress. The Crystal Ball comes topped with a hazy orb where you may or may not see your future after drinking the concoction of Herradura Silver Tequila, Green Chartreuse, agave nectar and lime.

Rising Tide Bar

Rising Tide Bar on the Royal Promenade. ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINE

On Royal Caribbean‘s Oasis-class ships, this popular bar moves smoothly up and down three decks on a slow, 20-minute ride. There are seats for 32 imbibers who sip as they travel between the bustling Royal Promenade and tree-lined Central Park. The popular drink: A Kir Royale (creme de cassis and champagne). You must be at least 21 to take a ride in this elevator.

SKYY Vodka Ice Bar

Who doesn’t want to put on a parka in the Caribbean? On select Norwegian Cruise Line ships, you’ll want to bundle up for this icy bar, located in a chamber always kept at 17 degrees Fahrenheit and decorated with ice sculptures and cool color lights. Bartenders serve vodka drinks on ice and in ice glasses. You even sit on ice.

Bionic Bar

Bionic Bar on Anthem of the Seas. ROY RILEY/ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINE

Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, as well as the Oasis-class Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas, take drink-making out of the hands of human bartenders and puts it into the hands, or rather robotic arms, of machines. The robots, with names such as Sock’Em and Rock’Em, can’t make every drink in the book, but they can shake up a signature Bionic Tea (think: Long Island Iced Tea), sliding it to you across a bar top. You order your selections by communicating via a smartpad. George Jetson would be impressed.

Related: 8 best drinks to order with a cruise ship beverage package (and 3 to avoid)

lchemy Bar

A popular fixture on most Carnival ships, this bar is themed on a pharmacy — complete with apothecary jars — and helmed by specially trained bartenders wearing lab coats who are ready to cure what ails you. You order on a prescription pad, and while there is a fun menu, with categories such as Energizing Elixirs and Passion Portions, it’s also a treat to just check off some of your favorite flavors and see what the bartenders “prescribe” for you.

Sugarcane Mojito Bar

JIM HUGHES/NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

On Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway- and Breakaway-plus ships, check out this Havana-themed venue with indoor and outdoor seating and live Latin-Cuban music. Watch the sun go down from the alfresco promenade while sipping unusual mojitos such as Spicy Passion, Pineapple Coconut and Raspberry Guava. If you can’t decide, go with a flight combining sweet and savory selections.

Blue Eye Lounge

You might not expect one of the coolest bar choices at sea to be on a small ship, but that’s the case on French line Ponant’s Explorer-class, 184-passenger Le Laperouse and its four sister ships. The multi-sensory lounge is below the water line and has two huge, whale eye-shaped portals for watching the sea. The dark space makes you feel like you are inside a whale, except it’s decorated with swanky “body listening” couches that gently vibrate to undersea acoustics. It’s eerie, fancy and fabulous. Order a martini and pretend you’re James Bond.

Guy’s Pig & Anchor Brewhouses

On Carnival Horizon, Carnival Panorama, Mardi Gras and the new Carnival Celebration (which debuts this fall) you can sip Carnival’s exclusive Parched Pig craft brews made by a brewmaster on each ship. There’s a smoked porter, farmhouse ale and hoppy IPA, among selections. Go with a flight. As if that’s not cool enough, you can also do brewery tours plus dive into hickory-smoked barbecue selections from Food Network star Guy Fieri. The RedFrog Pub and Brewery on Carnival Vista has the beers too, but with pub grub.

Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge

SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY

Live out Star Wars fantasies in this cozy bar on the new 4,000-passenger Disney Wish. The door whooshes as you enter and the bar is styled like a luxury space yacht, ready to jump between galaxies — which it does thanks to projections of outer space on “virtual” windows and a top-rate, rumbling sound system. Order up Coruscant The Chancellor, a cognac cocktail “enjoyed by the senate elite members.”

Golden Lion Pub

On Cunard ships, including the Queen Mary 2 ocean liner, the Golden Lion replicates a real British pub, from the dark wood, leather banquettes and stools to the darts tournaments and pub quizzes. Sample a wide selection of beers and ales, including three craft beers from award-winning UK micro-brewery Dark Revolution. Or go with a traditional Pimm’s Cup (made with a gin-based liquor, fresh fruit and ginger ale). The pub grub menu features fish ‘n’ chips and bangers and mash (sausages and mashed potatoes).

Scenic Bar

The cozy Scenic Lounge is also home to a bar that serves 130 different types of whiskey. ASHLEY KOSCIOLEK/THE POINTS GUY

Located in the main lounge on the 228-passenger Scenic Eclipse, this bar boasts more than 110 bottles of whisky on the wall, all in a floor-to-ceiling showcase backlit for dramatic effect. Among the golden-brown liquids you’ll find single malts such as a 25-year-old Glendullan, a 30-year-old Jura The Loch and a 16-year-old Lagavulin. Big-name, super-premium blends are well represented in a collection that gathers bottles from around the world, including from Australia, Japan, France, India, Taiwan, South Africa, the U.S., Scotland, Ireland and Sweden. Drinks are included in the cruise fare.

Tamarind Bar

Shhh, this is one of the best kept secrets on five Holland America ships. The Tamarind Bar, next to the first-rate, Asian-fusion Tamarind restaurant, is done up in stylish, Asian-inspired decor, with panoramic views and classy cocktails with creative ingredients. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun set while sipping, for instance, a Far East Legacy made with Absolut Mandarin, Asian Pear sake, St. Germaine liqueur, Cointreau and peach puree.

Martini Bar & Crush

Celebrity Beyond atrium featuring the Martini Bar. ERICA SILVERSTEIN/THE POINTS GUY

On most Celebrity Cruises ships, the popular Martini Bars are classy, tucked-away spaces featuring a collection of rare vodkas (and the option of caviar, too) served from an ice-topped bar. The bartenders do more than just pour the drinks — they entertain like in the Tom Cruise movie “Cocktail,” flipping and juggling cocktail shakers and pouring multiple drinks at once from a stack of shakers. On the Edge-class ships, the action moves to the Grand Plaza, under a breathtaking, color-changing, three-deck-high light fixture. Go with a dirty martini or a Candied Apple, with Gray Goose, apple schnapps, pomegranate juice and butterscotch schnapps.

Good Spirits At Sea

Every cocktail at this Princess Cruises bar comes with a story, created in partnership with the TV series Good Spirits. Drinks are made from liquor and other ingredients gathered from around the world, including farm fresh, local ingredients from cruising destinations. A mixologist does the preparing while giving detailed explanations. Get close-up views of the drink-making on a video screen behind the bar, found on select Princess Cruises ships. Sample a Grappa Peach and learn about its origins in Uruguay or a Bangkok Mule, made with whiskey, ginger and lemongrass.

Metropolitan Bar

On Norwegian Cruise Line’s new 3,099-passenger Norwegian Prima, this sustainability-focused bar specializes in hand-crafted, zero-waste cocktails. The idea is to combine surplus ingredients with sustainable spirits in creative ways. The signature Primadonna, a take on an Old Fashioned, is made with surplus banana peels and Flor De Cana rum, which is produced with 100% renewable energy. There’s also a line of responsibly sourced botanical gins and 20 biodynamic wines (produced via organic farming methods).

4 Can’t-Miss Activities in Miami Beach

You wouldn’t go to Miami Beach just to laze around in your hotel all day, would you? For that kind of vacation, you could simply visit someplace closer to home — not one of the top tourist destinations on the planet. Miami Beach has tons of things you can do aside from lying in your hotel bed or getting a tan on the beach, and to get the most out of your vacation you should put the following activities on your to-do list.Out of the many things that you can do in Miamy beach, there are four Activities in Miami Beach that you can´t miss while visiting.

4 Activities to do in Miami Beach

Browse Through Lincoln Road Mall

he Lincoln Road Mall uses an older definition of “mall” than the usual indoor shopping venue. It’s a long pedestrian-only street that passes through the center of Miami Beach and features all kinds of shops, restaurants, parks, and entertainment hotspots either on the road itself or close by. You can find some exclusive merchandise and unique eateries there, making it a must-visit destination for every tourist. Even most Miami locals will head to the Lincoln Road Mall to do some shopping or catch a movie.

Take an Art Deco Tour

Miami Beach developed quite a bit during the first part of the 20th century thanks to cars and planes making it easier to get to Florida for a winter vacation. This happened to be right around when Art Deco was the style in fashion, and so the beachfront still has plenty of Art Deco buildings and decorations. You can book a guided tour to get some stories on your walk, or you can just stroll down Ocean Drive and see plenty of amazing buildings.

See the Animals on Jungle Island

Jungle Island is a zoo on its own island, and it’s a convenient place to stop when you’re coming from Miami Beach, the airport, or a nearby hotel. The zoo dates back to 1936, and the island also offers a Japanese garden and the Miami Children’s Museum. Jungle Island isn’t as big as the more modern Zoo Miami to the south, but it’s much easier to reach from Miami Beach and its small size means you can fully explore the zoo and still have time left over for other activities.

Walk Through South Pointe Park

The southern edge of Miami Beach features a large park with a long path that meanders by the water, lots of shade from the many trees, a restaurant and snack shop, a playground, and several sculptures. You can also get a great ocean view or watch the beachgoers to the north on South Pointe Pier. You can bring your fishing pole and tackle and try to bag some saltwater fish. Just don’t forget to get a saltwater fishing license before you head over.

There’s plenty more to do at Miami Beach than what’s on this list. You can swim at the beach, you can charter a fishing boat to try and land something big, you can spend an evening at a bar or nightclub, and you can visit the many museums in the area. At a tourist destination like Miami Beach, you won’t have any trouble finding fun things to do.

Planning a Western Caribbean cruise with kids? Budget for shore excursions

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

On some cruises, I have no need for organized excursions. I’ll spend the day walking around town, browsing in the shops, or enjoying local cuisine or drinks in the restaurants and bars near the dock. I might walk or take a taxi to the beach for a relaxing day in the sun, or lace up my hiking boots and venture into the woods or up a mountain. I don’t need a tour to take a ride on a gondola or visit a museum.

This strategy saves me money on the activity portion of my cruise vacation, but I still have a great time in port.

However, on a recent cruise to the Western Caribbean with my family, I found that the DIY approach was not going to work for two reasons. The first was because I was traveling with two elementary-school-age kids whose idea of a good time does not include shopping, long walks or local bars. The second was the Western Caribbean ports of Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Georgetown, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel, Mexico, were not as conducive to independently organized family activities as you might think.

All of which meant that I had to budget extra for cruise shore excursions.

The Western Caribbean is one of the most popular first-time cruiser destinations. (I visited the same ports on this recent MSC cruise that I did on my first ever cruise in the 1990s on Royal Caribbean.) Newbie cruisers, lured by cheap introductory fares and the much touted “all inclusive” nature of cruise pricing, might not realize just how much beyond the cruise fare they’re going to need to budget for activities in port — especially if they have kids in tow.

For cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

Here’s how I planned my Western Caribbean cruise to give you an idea of the family cruise activities you might want to book — and budget for.

In This Post

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Dunn's River Falls, Jamaica

Jamaica is known for its lush green hillsides, sandy beaches — and enthusiastic salespeople. You can walk from the cruise port to Ocho Rios Bay Beach, but be prepared for a barrage of offers for hair braiding, souvenir buying, activity signups and more. It’s not always relaxing and can be intimidating, especially for novice family travelers.

The star attraction of Ocho Rios is Dunn’s River Falls, a cascading waterfall visitors can climb up by forming human chains and carefully navigating the slippery rocks. It’s a unique activity, featured in all kinds of tour combos, and one well suited to active families with older kids. On this trip, I wasn’t sure my 70-something mom or my petite 8-year-old daughter could hack it.

Dolphin swims are popular here, but encounters with captive dolphins are controversial because they’re not always treated humanely and may be better off in the wild. Think twice and do your research before supporting an activity like that. I’m not an animal person and have already been kissed once by a dolphin and never need to repeat the experience. Plus, those tours are pricey.

A beach break at a resort was an option for more relaxing sunning and swimming, but I had my eye on one of those for later in the trip. That’s when I saw the option for river tubing. Leisurely floating down a river in an inflatable inner tube seemed like fun for all ages. A more active option included a swim in the Blue Hole, but my mom exceeded the maximum age. (Sorry, mom!)

The river tubing option turned out to be perfect. We got to see some of the Jamaican landscape as we drove from the port to the river. The guides were funny and friendly, and helped my mom and my daughter when they got stuck. My 11-year-old son was a bit underwhelmed by the lack of rapids; my daughter declared it “the best day ever;” my mom did not capsize. 10/10 — highly recommend.

Cost: $72 for adults, $50 for children, when booked online pre-cruise.

Georgetown, Grand Cayman Island

Girl in wading pool with turtles at Cayman Turtle Center

Of all the ports on on our cruise itinerary, Grand Cayman may be the best option if you don’t want to book a tour. Seven Mile Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand, lined with restaurants and water sports purveyors. It’s easily accessed by public bus or taxi from the cruise port.

I would have taken that route, except I was tempted by a tour that sounded perfect for my family.

Many of the shore excursions offered on my sailing were animal focused: more dolphin swims and encounters, as well as meeting some rays at Stingray City. Yet the tour that caught my eye focused on another marine animal — the turtle.

The tour to the Cayman Turtle Center: Island Wildlife Encounter was ideal for my family. We could see and touch many of the center’s turtles and learn about its turtle breeding and release program. We also could see many of the center’s other animals, including crocodiles, sharks and tropical birds. Then, we could relax on loungers on a small beach, practice snorkeling in a calm, manmade lagoon and swim with the turtles and fish, or swim around in the pool and go down the water slide. Finally, a hot lunch was served, so we didn’t need to worry about hangry children.

The variety worked well. My daughter struggled with the snorkeling, so she and Grandma hung out at the pool, while I followed my son and the turtles around the lagoon. The clear, calm water meant I saw more fish and turtles than I often do when snorkeling in choppy ocean waters. The conditions are definitely ideal for novice snorkelers.

Cost: $75 for adults, $53 for children, when booked online pre-cruise.

Related: Ship-sponsored vs. independent shore excursions on cruises: Which should you book?

Cozumel, Mexico

Sea lion show at Chankanaab Beach Park in Cozumel, Mexico
Sea lion show at Chankanaab Beach Park in Cozumel, Mexico. ERICA SILVERSTEIN/THE POINTS GUY

Cozumel was the port I had targeted for a beach day. The island is a jumping-off point for tours to some of Mexico’s most popular cultural attractions, such as the Tulum Mayan ruins. To get to many of those destinations, though, you need to take a ferry to the mainland, then a bus, and suddenly you’re looking at a long day of touring that younger kids can’t handle well.

Many travelers spend the day shopping or at the bars and restaurants in town, but that’s not so family-friendly. A beach day sounded better. But which to choose?

I narrowed it down to two options: A beach break at Playa Mia Grand Beach Park or Chankanaab Beach Park with shore snorkel. The beach break was appealing because it offered a pool and handful of water slides in addition to the beach. It was also five hours long over the hottest part of the day. (There was also an all-inclusive version, with open bar and all-you-can-eat lunch for $25 more per adult.)

Chankanaab also offered a beach experience, but included snorkel gear in a marine reserve with underwater statues, additional attractions like a sea lion show, reproduction Mayan village, tequila tasting and botanical garden. It was also shorter by an hour.

I couldn’t decide, and my mom was fine with either option, so I waited to book until I was on board and could ask the excursions team. The lady I spoke to was all about the all-inclusive beach break, which seemed not worth the extra fee to me because I didn’t think I’d consume that much food and drink between our dietary restrictions and wanting to stay sober while watching the kids.

Ultimately, my son decided he was all about the snorkeling, and we went with Chankanaab. If I had to do it again, I’d go with the beach break.

Entrance to Chankanaab Beach Park, Cozumel, Mexico

Don’t get me wrong; Chankanaab is a great excursion option. As promised, it offered a variety of activities and shady palapas for our use. However, there wasn’t much of a sandy sloped entry into the water, and the waves were rather rough. It was not an easy place for a new snorkeler to feel comfortable, and ultimately the gear was too big for my small daughter. The snorkeling was a half-hour guided swim, which only my son ended up doing, but there wasn’t a great place for my daughter to play in the shallows and that put her in a bad mood for the rest of the day.

We did enjoy the sea lion show, walking through the Mayan village and spotting huge iguanas around the grounds. My son was a fan of reading in the hammocks set up under some trees near the beach. You could order food and drink to your beach chair. But, ultimately, based on the personalities I was dealing with, perhaps the beach with swimming pool option would have suited us better.

Cost: $55.99 per adult, $39.99 per child, booked on board.

Related: Avoid these 10 mistakes when booking cruise shore excursions

Bottom line

Snorkeling with turtles in a manmade lagoon at the Cayman Turtle Center
Snorkeling with turtles at the Cayman Turtle Center. ERICA SILVERSTEIN/THE POINTS GUY

All told we spent nearly $700 on shore excursions for a family of four. In my mind, that’s a fair price at less than $100 per person, per port day; some tours, especially the dolphin swims and all-day excursions, easily top $100 per adult. A tour schedule that included a zip-line tour over Dunn’s River Falls ($99.99 per adult), a dolphin swim and Stingray City ($155.99), and a visit to the Tulum Mayan ruins ($109.99) would have upped the activity cost for a family of two adults and two kids to $1,244.

However, for some folks who scored deals on inside or ocean-view cabins, these tour costs can be akin to paying an additional cruise fare or two. Families traveling on the cheap don’t want to be caught unprepared when they realize they have to choose between missing out on the best a port has to offer and blowing their vacation budget.

The key to avoiding unwanted financial surprises is to account for the total cost of your trip before you book that cruise cabin. That includes any flights to your departure port, pre-cruise hotel stays, onboard splurges (drink packages, extra-fee dining, spa treatments and the like) and, yes, activities in port.

For first-time family cruisers eyeing a tropical sailing, I’d wager that it’s easier to skip the tours and explore independently in the Eastern Caribbean (at ports like San Juan, Puerto Rico, where you can walk from the port to the fort and fly your own kite on its lawn, and St. Maarten and St. Thomas where it’s easy to take a water taxi or shuttle to the beach) than in the Western Caribbean.

If your vacation budget can’t accommodate everything, consider choosing a lower-tier cabin or skipping some of the extra-fee dining venues to save money for activities in port. Only you can decide which aspects of a cruise will be most memorable for your family, but I’d say that the tours we took were some of our favorite parts of our Western Caribbean family cruise.

teen climbing in a indoor gym

Almost twelve years ago, my husband stumbled onto a climbing gym and became a quick addict. At that time, our oldest boy was around four years old, and he came along with his papa for the fun of it.

When our second boy was born, we started to take them both to the local wall once in a while. Even found a cute climbing class that was held at our local gym which we begged all of their tiny friends to join with our sons. It wasn’t anything super serious, since my youngest was around four and my oldest was around ten.

Traveling and Climbing – A Family Affair

The only way I was able to convince my husband, three years ago, to visit Spain was to incorporate a lot of climbing including staying in Siurana, Spain, the mecca of rock climbing. So my kids got a bit of the outdoor rock climbing bug there while they climbed along with their papa. Yet they weren’t hooked just yet, so this wasn’t a priority of our travel planning. Even though my husband thought it did. Because the bottom line is, when your kids are happy so are you, it wasn’t their main priority.

Fast-forward to today – both our sons are on the Guatemala National Climbing Team. Rock climbing isn’t only a sport to them anymore, it’s a lifestyle that they participate in almost daily.

OK, maybe not seven days a week. Because even the greatest athletes and climbers of the world need a day off once in a while.

However, due to their new passion which my husband and I want to feel as much as possible, our travels have completely changed now.

In a good way!

Today our travels revolve entirely on where my three men can climb, either via indoor climbing gym or rock climbing outside.

Travel Like a Local – Rock Climbing at the Local Indoor Climbing Gym

teen climbing at a indoor climbing gym

With the kids training in full swing year round our travels have become limited to visiting with family, where ever that might be at the time, while keeping the boys close to climbing gym or wall.

And let’s face it, climbing gyms are a much easier solution, with all the equipment ready for you right there.

And have you seen the gyms that are opening up across the US today? They will blow your mind. So much that if you never climbed, and visited one of these, you will be inspired to join up and start climbing yourself.

My parents, who live in NYC, are located in a spectacular area of booming climbing gyms. And one of the best ones that I have found while doing research is The Cliffs in Long Island City.

One thing for when we traveled through Spain that my husband was on the look out for was climbing gyms. Even though his preference is rock.  He know that if he wanted to enjoy the great rock, find a partner(s) he would do it via the local climbing gym. This is where he was bound to meet someone to either learn from or hit the rock with.

Basically, instant community, new techniques (and beta) and blending into the local groove.

The funny thing is, he’s a total introvert. Yet he managed to meet a lot of people and instructors within minutes of entering any gym and always doing day trips to the rock that were more local secrets than mainstream stuff you find online.

So when I was looking for climbing gyms for my kids, I wanted to start with a class or private lesson so that they spend time with one of the local instructors, get new techniques and a new perspective of different styles of climbing.

Climbing to me is like art, every climber has their own unique take on tackling routes and the more you are open to them the better you become as a climber and person.

two guys at a indoor climbing gym

Even though my kids are quite social and personable, they aren’t at the level of befriending people in the gym – just yet. So working with instructors or group classes is a great way for them to really connect.

And that’s exactly what we did when I first got in touch with the staff at The Cliffs Climbing Facility. Eva was my main contact, and she was super helpful in the planning and connecting me with TJ, who was in charge of the instructors and pretty much the go-to guy for the gym (we found this out when we got there).

The Cliffs Climbing Gym – A Growing Community and Fun

I know coming from Guatemala, where our gyms are relatively small, I can be easily impressed. However, I must say I was totally blown away at first site.

The gym is enormous. With every kind of discipline and category to tackle at your fingertips.

We were greeted by Will, who was my youngest son’s instructor, and he was great to chat with about the climbing, activities, and the area itself.

kid getting ready for climbing with a trainer

However, we really scored with TJ being my other son’s instructor. TJ comes from old-school climbing, which I’m not going to go into all the terminology and other fun stuff that goes with that, but basically, he has spent more years climbing outdoors than most instructors we’ve met and that to me is the real key.

two guys shaking hands in a indoor climbing gym

My husband had always said his religion was touching the rock, but with all the indoor gyms most of the climbers have lost that element.

TJ still beamed with it. And this is contagious. After spending some time with him, my sons who don’t climb outdoors as much as we want them to start asking us to take them out more and more.

Another great benefit of having access to a gym like The Cliffs and all the services that are offered is that my kids love bouldering. So with TJ and Will, we had them focus more on lead. In a few months, they will be competing in this category and definitely needed that extra push and practice. And even more so to learn better techniques for something they found to be – what they call their weakness.

In reality, they simply don’t have access to great routes where we live, and doing them with trained instructors did exactly what my goal was – opened them up to new things and ways of doing it.

After the one hour of hardcore training in a new discipline, the kids went to what they were dying to do from the beginning.

Bouldering!

And you know it was a good training day when they are exhausted and hungry.

We are coming back in the summertime to visit again and will be arranging for the kids to join up for their summer programs and training.

Avianca LifeMiles raised award costs to Asia with no notice: Here’s what you need to know

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

The Avianca LifeMiles loyalty program is arguably one of the most under-appreciated programs in the industry. The program has been known to have information technology issues and notoriously poor customer service, but makes up for it with some unique sweet spot redemptions.

The combination of these valuable sweet spots and the ability to earn LifeMiles via transfers from various transferable points programs, including American Express Membership Rewards (1:1 transfer ratio), Brex Rewards (1:1 transfer ratio), Capital One miles (1:1 transfer ratio), Citi ThankYou Rewards (1:1 transfer ratio) and Marriott Bonvoy (3:1 transfer ratio, with a 5,000-mile bonus for every increment of 60,000 points you transfer) make LifeMiles an appealing loyalty program.

One popular Avianca LifeMiles sweet spot has been flying between the U.S. and Asia in lie-flat business class for as little as 75,000 LifeMiles one-way on Star Alliance partners. But, as first noted by Thrifty Traveler, it seems like some LifeMiles sweet spots were recently devalued with no notice. Let’s take a look at what happened.

Related: Can’t find award availability with Avianca LifeMiles? Don’t give up until you try this trick

In This Post

Devaluation breakdown

In short: most, if not all, awards between the U.S. and Asia currently cost more LifeMiles than before. After years of inexpensive award rates in both economy and business class, LifeMiles has seemingly increased award rates by as much as 30% on redemptions between the U.S. and Asia.

Previously, you could fly one-way from New York to Taipei for 35,000 LifeMiles in economy class and 75,000 LifeMiles in business class. Now, you’ll need to redeem 45,000 LifeMiles to fly in economy class and 90,000 LifeMiles in business class.

LIFEMILES.COM

Likewise, you could previously fly one-way from Los Angeles to Tokyo on ANA for 35,000 LifeMiles in economy class and 75,000 LifeMiles in business class. This is now bookable for 40,000 LifeMiles in economy class and 85,000 LifeMiles in business class.

LIFEMILES.COM

You’ll see the same new pricing for a United-operated flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo.

LIFEMILES.COM

And, as expected, you’ll see the same pricing on Singapore Airlines’ fifth-freedom route from Los Angeles to Tokyo.

LIFEMILES.COM

Bottom line

This is an unfortunate devaluation for those looking to redeem Avianca LifeMiles to fly between the U.S and Asia. With these changes, you may want to consider other programs. To give you an idea of where to start, check out our guides on the best ways to travel to Japan with points and miles and how to get to Singapore using points and miles.

It is worth noting that the award charts are still unchanged on Avianca’s website, so we’re hopeful this higher award pricing is a glitch. We’ve reached out to an Avianca spokesperson for comment and will update the story once we receive a statement.

Should You Buy New Underwear Before Traveling?

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Should You Buy New Underwear Before Traveling?

If you’re going traveling, even if just for a short while, you have a great deal to think about and plan. Your itinerary, flights and accommodation are just the basics. You’ve also got to put a lot of time into packing your suitcase perfectly. The last thing anybody wants is to reach their destination only to discover they are missing an essential item.

So, it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to take away with you. Starting off with your underwear! We need to wear underwear every single day so it’s one of the most important things for you to consider. But do you need to buy new sets before you travel? Here we are going to look at some questions you need to ask yourself in order to answer this question!

How Long Are You Going Away For?

When you’re going away, getting new clothing items for your trip is part of the fun in the build up. If you are going to be out of the country for an extended period, then you’re probably going to want to take a fair few pairs of underwear, ensuring you have variety. Getting good quality new underwear is one way to ensure that your pairs will last you throughout your trip, as they should be in mint condition when you buy them. A lot of the time, over the years, underwear can be susceptible to wear and tear, just like most clothing items. Therefore, having new ones will make you feel more assured, and they should be better for you than your old pieces.

What Kind of Underwear Do You Currently Have?

Have a look in your underwear drawer. What do you see? If it’s worn out, tatty underwear that you’re not excited to wear, then maybe your travels are a great excuse to get some new pieces. Plus, if your underwear is old then it may not be fitting as well as it once did, so this is a great opportunity for you to get measured to find your size match. This is especially important with bras! You want to travel in as much comfort as possible, so even if you just get one pair of new underwear, it could make a difference on your getaway.

What Will You Be Doing On Your Trip?

Consider the activities you’re going to be taking part in on your trip. You may need new underwear for these alone. For example, if you’re going to be hiking, a supportive sports bra and breathable comfy knickers are vital. Think about if you have what you need for each different thing you’re going to be doing.

Do You Have the Budget to Treat Yourself?

When it comes to travel, many people have to save up for years to fund their trip. So, you need to consider whether or not you have the spare cash to spend on new underwear before you go away. If you do, then that’s great, treat yourself. If not, you may need to reevaluate if it is really necessary. Be sensible!

Is the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy worth the annual fee?

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

The credit cards world scratched its collective head when Marriott Bonvoy launched its latest cards with an annual fee we’d never seen before.

While most credit cards fall into the “basic” card camp (with annual fees under $100) or the “luxury” card camp (annual fees of $400-plus), the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card launched in September 2022 with an annual fee of $250 (see rates and fees). But what do you get for this fee? Is the card sufficiently positioned above those entry-level credit cards to justify an extra $150? And what does it lack that’s included on cards with $400 or more in annual fees?

Let’s take a look at what you get for the $250 annual fee on the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy to see if the annual fee is worth it.

Welcome bonus

New applicants can earn 125,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points after spending $4,000 in purchases on their new card in the first three months of cardmembership. This bonus is worth $1,050 according to TPG’s latest valuations.

The St. Regis Bora Bora. ZACH HONIG/THE POINTS GUY

Great locations for using Marriott Bonvoy points include award stays at places like The Ritz-Carlton, Turks & Caicos, The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort and The West Hollywood Edition. Those who enjoy skiing or snowboarding might enjoy properties like The St. Regis Aspen Resort, The St. Regis Deer Valley or The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch.

Marriott removed its award charts in March 2022 in favor of a dynamic pricing system but is keeping 97% of hotels within their previous off-peak-to-peak pricing bands through the end of 2022. This means that it can be nearly impossible to know exactly how many points you’ll need for a hotel until you sit down and try to make a booking.

If you’ve had Marriott credit cards from Chase or American Express in the past, there are restrictions that will limit your ability to collect a new-member bonus. Fortunately, there’s a pop-up that will tell you if you are not eligible for the bonus when you apply before Amex runs your credit — and our chart can help clarify things as well.

Elite status and related perks

Cardmembers receive automatic Gold Elite status with Marriott Bonvoy. TPG values Gold Elite status at $800 per year. At this level, you can expect benefits like upgrades to preferred rooms (but not suites), late checkout and a welcome gift of bonus points at check-in.

Cardholders also receive 15 elite night credits in their Marriott Bonvoy account each year. These are what you need to reach higher levels of status and they can be stacked if you also hold a business credit card from Marriott. For instance, if you hold the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card, this card will give you another 15 elite night credits — meaning you start the year with 30 elite night credits automatically.

Related: Here’s why you need both a personal and business Marriott Bonvoy credit card

To earn Platinum Elite status — where benefits like suite upgrades and free breakfast kick in — you need 50 nights per year with Marriott Bonvoy, and holding these two credit cards would put you more than halfway there.

However, unlike many hotel credit cards that you’re used to, there’s no path to achieving elite status by spending lots of money on your Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card each year. You can’t spend your way to Platinum Elite status, no matter how many purchases you make.

Do note that you get automatic Platinum Elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card, but that card comes with a hefty $650 annual fee.

1,000 bonus points per stay

Cardmembers can receive 1,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points for each paid stay at a hotel or resort that participates in Marriott Bonvoy. TPG values Marriott points at 0.84 cents apiece, meaning 1,000 points are worth $8.40. The bonus points are not available on stays where you redeem points or free night awards.

an outdoor seating area where each table is enclosed in a bubble
The JW Marriott Charlotte. TAYLOR JENKINS/THE POINTS GUY nnual free night award

Most hotel credit cards offer a free night automatically on your account anniversary. Unfortunately, you have to spend to earn a free night award on the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card.

Cardmembers who spend $15,000 or more on their cards within a calendar year can receive a free night award worth up to 35,000 points. You can redeem this free night award at places like The St. Regis Bangkok, The St. Regis Doha, W Atlanta — Downtown and several hotels near national parks.

Related: 11 best uses of Marriott 35,000-point certificates for family vacations

That said, due to the dynamic pricing mentioned earlier, you’ll want to do a calendar search for flexible dates in order to find nights that cost 35,000 points or less. It can be especially difficult to use your free night awards on or near holidays since award prices on those dates tend to be higher as well. However, if you want to use your free night award at a pricier hotel, you can add up to 15,000 points for more redemption options.

Related: How to use a Marriott Bonvoy 35,000-point certificate

Other perks

Earning points on the Bevy card is similar to what you’ll see on other Marriott Bonvoy credit cards. Cardmembers earn 6 points per dollar at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy, 4 points per dollar on the first $15,000 per year in combined purchases at restaurants and at U.S. supermarkets (then 2 points per dollar) and 2 points per dollar on other purchases.

Bevy cardholders also can take advantage of several travel protections to help when things go wrong during a trip.

a large hotel complex surrounding multiple swimming pools
The Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa on the Big Island of Hawaii. RYAN SMITH/THE POINTS GUY

Based on TPG’s valuations, that’s essentially a return of 5.04% on Marriott purchases, 3.36% at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets and 1.68% on everyday spending. Those rates aren’t jaw-dropping but aren’t bad for a cobranded card.

Cardmembers also gain access to Amex Offers, which can provide targeted discounts or bonus points on eligible purchases.

Bottom line

If you’ve read other articles we’ve written on whether annual fees are worth paying, you’ll notice that there are typically more benefits to highlight on most credit cards. That’s especially true for cards with an annual fee of $250.

However, the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy offers mid-tier status in a worldwide hotel program and 1,000 bonus points for each paid stay. There are also travel protections available and the ability to earn a free night award through spending. Noticeably lacking from the list of benefits, however, are perks like lounge access and an automatic free night on your account anniversary each year.

If you spend many nights at Marriott Bonvoy properties each year, you may sufficiently enjoy the perks that come with Gold Elite status and find that this makes the card’s $250 annual fee worth it. Conversely, if you’re spending that many nights at a Marriott hotel each year, you may qualify for Gold Elite status anyway and not need this card to make it happen. In this case, it could be hard to justify keeping the card after you’ve used the points from the welcome bonus available in the first year.

Whether the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy’s annual fee is worth it depends on each person’s situation, but you could also unlock Gold status with the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Business card for just $125 (see rates and fees) — and that card comes with a free night award automatically each year.

Similarly, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card from Chase comes with a free night award (without needing to spend anything) and automatic Silver Elite status for a $95 annual fee.

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Touring the California Coastline Road Trip on an RV – 7 Stops Worth to Make

Have you decided that this year’s vacation will be an epic RV trip along the Pacific Coast Highway? Touring California’s coastline is not only a beautiful way to spend your holidays, but also one of those bucket list trips for many, since it’s one of the best road trips in RV to do in the US. The route will take you along some of the most stunning coastal and mountain scenery you can experience, and there are so many incredible attractions and stops along the way, so, pack whatever you want to bring on an RV trip and hit the road!

Outside of the dining, shopping, festivals, museums, and events that you can experience, there are some must-see locations that should simply be on everyone’s itinerary. Here we’ll take a look at seven of them.

Touring the California Coastline Road Trip on an RV - 7 Stops Worth to Make

7 Stops you should do while road tripping the California Coastline on an RV

San Francisco

San Francisco is easily one of California’s most well-known cities, and for good reason. From the architecture to Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz Island, and of course the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, this is a stop you simply cannot miss. Just be sure to give yourself a little extra time to explore, as usually, one day isn’t nearly enough to take in all the sights of the city and surrounding area.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

If you’re looking for a more laidback stop, Carmel-by-the-Sea is a must-see. The architecture is European-style so you may even feel as though you’re in a whole other country. Experience the lovely gardens, small quaint cottages, and cobblestone courtyards in this village. For those with an interest in the art scene, you’ll find a wide selection of artists selling their creations. Boutique shopping and local wine are also very popular here.

It should also be mentioned that the coastal views are nothing short of spectacular, so you’re in for a real treat on this stop.

Monterey

For those who are enjoying the HBO series Big Little Lies, a stop in Monterey is the ultimate fan dream. The show is filmed and takes place in this stunning town, so you may even recognize some of the sights. Points of interest include Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, Monterey Bay, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a drive on “17 Mile Drive” known for its epic scenery, Old Fisherman’s Wharf, the local shops and cafes, and shopping at Cannery Row.

If you’ve got a little extra time to stay, you can also take in the many recreational sports that are popular here such as biking, golfing, kayaking, sailing, and even whale watching when in season.

Hearst Castle

If architecture is your thing, then Hearst Castle is a must-see. Built in 1865 by George Hearst, a miner, rancher, and then US Senator, the castle sits on 40,000 acres of ranch land, offering absolutely stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Heart’s son bought additional land and started to build what is known as the Enchanted Hill, which is now one of the biggest tourist attractions in the area. It is open for tours and dining and acts as an art museum.

Malibu

Of course, you can’t tour California without making a stop in Malibu, one of the state’s most beautiful stretches of beach. The area is very upscale and is home to a number of A-list celebrities, so be prepared to get a look at some massive mansions and estates. Besides the sandy beaches, you’ll also find rocky coves, cliffs, and headlands.

Santa Barbara

Another upscale must-see is Santa Barbara which has been coined “The American Riviera.” Located on the coast, you get stunning views of the Pacific Ocean as well as the mountains rising behind the town. The area is well known for its white stucco buildings with red tile roofs that help create that Mediterranean vibe.

Besides sightseeing, the area is also known for its local wineries, upscale shopping, and local art galleries, as well as more than 160 restaurants to sample. Taking a walk along State Street in the heart of Santa Barbara is a great way to get a feel for this stunning destination.

Los Angeles

Then we have Los Angeles, which can act as the perfect starting point as you head north on the Pacific Coast Highway, or your ending point if you don’t want to continue south to San Diego. Los Angeles, or the “City of Angels,” is ideal for movie and television buffs. You never know what stars you may see out and about, and you can even take part in tours that drive you past the stars’ homes.

Some of the highlights worth checking out in Los Angeles include the Santa Monica Pier, a stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Kodak Theatre, Rodeo Drive, and of course Sunset Boulevard.

If you have dreams of seeing the “Hollywood” sign in real life, then you need to head to Griffith Observatory for the perfect view. If you can’t seem to get enough in terms of stars and film, then a visit to Universal Studios is also a great way to spend an action-packed day.

New to RVing?

For those who are new to RVing and haven’t yet experienced this mode of travel, you’re in for a huge treat. Using an RV to travel means you don’t have to worry about booking hotels and inns along the way, and you get to travel with all the conveniences of home.

This is where you want to be sure you take the time to look into various rv rentals in terms of how many they sleep, the size of the RV itself (smaller ones will be easier for newbies to navigate), the layout, and of course the budget. Being picky about what it is you want and need will help ensure the trip is a huge success.

Trip to Remember

By adding these stops to your itinerary, you’ll be sure to have a trip to remember that introduces you to all kinds of stunning and beautiful places along the world-famous Pacific Coast Highway. It’s the kind of trip that you will want to repeat a few times since there are just so many stops along the way.

Korean Air Inspecting A330s Following Two Incidents

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Korean Air will be carrying out inspections of its entire Airbus A330 fleet, following two recent incidents.

Why Korean Air is inspecting Airbus A330s

Korean Air has today announced that it will be launching a safety audit of its Airbus A330 fleet. The airline will temporarily be taking its fleet of 24 A330s out of service in phases, for thorough inspections. Furthermore, the airline will retire six of its older A330s, though the timeline for that remains to be seen.

This decision follows two recent incidents:

On October 23, a Korean Air A330 overran the runway at Cebu Airport, as there were bad weather conditions; the plane was badly damaged, but all passengers and crew survivedOn October 30, a Korean Air A330 flying to Sydney had to return to Incheon Airport shortly after takeoff due to an engine problem

A Korean Air A330 had a landing accident in Cebu

Korean Air President Woo Kee-hong has said that “Korean Air is aware of the gravity of the recent events involving our A330 aircraft,” and “to address concerns and secure a safe operation system, we will carry out a full-scale, comprehensive safety inspection of our A330 fleet and seek an independent, external safety consultation.”

A Korean Air A330 had to return due to engine issues

I doubt much will come of this?

Safety is of course paramount in the airline industry, and airlines should always err on the side of caution. That philosophy is why aviation is so safe.

While carrying out inspections out of an abundance of caution is ultimately good, the A330 has been flying for years (Korean Air’s fleet is an average of 17+ years old), and has proven to be an incredibly reliable aircraft.

In this case it seems we have two unrelated incidents — one was a landing incident with bad weather conditions, and one was an engine issue after takeoff. While both incidents should be investigated, there’s no indication that the two are linked.

If it were believed that there were a serious issue, all A330s would be grounded immediately, rather than inspections being carried out progressively. This seems more about saving face and public perception than anything else.

Korean Air is inspecting its A330 fleet

Bottom line

Following two recent Korean Air Airbus A330 incidents, the airline will be carrying out inspections on its entire fleet of these jets. The two incidents seem unrelated, as one involved bad weather during landing, and one involved an engine issue after takeoff.

It sounds like these inspections are being carried out gradually, so it seems like operations shouldn’t be impacted too much.

What do you make of Korean Air inspecting its A330s?

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Visit to Copan Ruins In Honduras – Mayan Ceremonial Site

Did you know that the Copan Ruins in Honduras are considered one of the most important Maya Ceremonial cities and ruins along the Maya route. Among other things, it is because the monuments here have helped archaeologists to learn a lot about Mayan writing and language. Continue reading to learn more about this and other reasons why Copan Ruins are so important.

Visit to Copan Ruins Honduras - Mayan Ceremonial Site

Why the Copan Ruins In Honduras are SO important in the archeological world:

1. Intact Artwork and Writing

The Mayan Steleas that were found here were practically intact from when they were built. As you can see in the photo below, some of them still have the original bright red color on them, almost perfectly preserved over the centuries.

This is important because the hieroglyphs that they used as writing are still complete. This allows experts to read and interpret the full thing and not have to guess.

2. The Stelae also read like books

If you know how to read Maya that is. Gratefully, to a Russian woman – my people – can now decipher what they Maya once wrote.

Because of the Mayan versions of paper books where they recorded their history and scientific advances, we don’t know much about them. They were considered guides to heresy. That’s why having monuments like these that can be read is so important.

3. The main staircase

Aside from the wealth of info the Steleas read, the main staircase which was almost perfectly intact, gave the largest insight to the Maya world, more than any other ruin to date. It can be read too. Plus the preservation lever in it tells us a lot of their architectural techniques.

4. Copan Ruins was home to centuries of dynasties and empires

Each one built more grandeur temples over the others. Luckily for us, we can visit the tunnels that are under the city to see these ancient relics and their water systems and mayan tunnels that they used for their villages.

What To See at Copan Ruins

Unlike other ruins along the Maya route, Copan doesn’t have an all-inclusive entrance fee.

You have a choice of 3 things to see:

1. The main ruins themselves 2. The underground tunnels 3. The Museum

And they all have separate costs, and in my opinion, it is worth paying for all of them.

Mayan Ceremonial Site - museum in copan honduras
This is my second visit to Copan Ruins. I came here as a backpacker, budget traveler 10 years ago. This time I returned with my family, and we splurged on the whole package.

Trust me, doing the entire tour is worth every single penny! You get the full experience of this incredible place.

How to get there and cost

Copan Ruins are located less than 5 minutes – by car- from the center of Copan town. Be aware that the prices vary if you’re from Central America or any other country. You might have to pay a little more, but it isn’t too significant.

On average the whole package can cost you up to $40. Kids under 7 are half price.

Also, take a lot of sunscreen and bug repellent with you.

Accor winter sale slashes prices at 2,000 hotels by 25%

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Through Nov. 17, Accor is offering stays at more than 2,000 hotels across Europe with a 25% discount.

You must stay for a minimum of two nights and take the trip between Dec. 12 and March 5, 2023. With such a diverse range of hotel brands under the Accor umbrella — Novotel, ibis, Mercure, Pullman and Sofitel to name but a few of its 19-strong lineup — there’s plenty to choose from.

Depending on the time of the year and the location, there are some incredible deals available. For example, you can spend just $35 per night for a standard double room at ibis Styles in central Krakow, which is as stylish as it is spacious.

Fancy checking out Budapest’s fabled Christmas markets? Opt for two nights in a Superior Room at the Mercure Budapest Korona Hotel in Hungary from as little as $76 per night. Or, get an early taste of Hogmanay in Edinburgh, Scotland, with a two-night stay in a Twin Room or Queen Single at the city’s downtown Novotel? That’ll be $76 per night as well.

Don’t grab your credit card just yet, though. The first day of the sale is exclusively open to members of Accor’s global loyalty scheme, Accor Live Limitless, or ALL for short; members will also receive an extra 10% off on booking.

The sheer fact you can book right up until the end of spring is a joy, too. From premium city center abodes to luxury ski resorts, hotels in the countryside to hotels at airports (we loved our stay at Sofitel London Heathrow Hotel in Terminal 5), the Accor properties cater to every kind of traveler visiting Europe.

Another plus: Many Accor brands cater to business travelers. The brand offers business hotels that don’t feel like business, as cheesy as that might sound.

Case in point: Hotel Sofitel Bellecour Lyon in France, which TPG gave a massive thumbs up to in 2018, is pleasant for tourists and business types alike. It is centrally located, sumptuously designed and ideal for those armed with laptops in urgent need of coffee.

You can also score a hotel deal near some of the European winter sports action. The promotion will allow you to shave off a quarter of the price on your next stay around mountainous terrain. You can search for some of the best in France, Switzerland, Germany, Poland and Italy here.

Things to Do in Louisiana for First Time Visitors

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Things to Do in Louisiana for First Time Visitors

Louisiana is one of those places that first-time visitors can go to without any specific plan and still end up having a blast. With tons of iconic landmarks sprinkled in every city, it’s difficult to head out there and not catch a glimpse of American history. Here are the best things to do in Louisiana, one of those places that first-time visitors can go to and have a blast in every corner.

Things to Do in Louisiana

With such a rich past, the culture of Louisiana has grown to create a unique atmosphere that can’t be found anywhere else. Here’s a fun fact about Louisiana: Every local knows that when a first-time visitor asks what they should do around here, the answer’s not going to be short. Here are some of the things you can’t miss out on in Louisiana.

6 Things to Do in Louisiana

Walk Around New Orleans’ Royal Street

If you’re looking for an area to take memorable photos, then Royal Street is definitely the place for you. Exploring Louisiana’s architecture, culture, and cuisine is made extremely easy by walking through a street filled with the finest buildings, art, and restaurants around. Royal Street is almost like a concentrated dose of the Louisiana experience so visiting it when you don’t have much time to spare is strongly recommended.

Eat a Lot of Food

There’s a reason why restaurants all over the world title their food as  Louisiana Style before the names of their best dishes. That’s because of how superb the culinary experience is around here. Whether it’s soul food or the hot sauce on top of it, you know that if you’re in Louisiana, you’re going to be eating well throughout your stay.

Visit the Capital City

While visiting New Orleans is highly recommended, visiting the capital city Baton Rouge is an absolute must, especially if you’re taking this trip along with your family. Whether it’s visiting museums or exploring the rich American history, you’ll find that most Baton Rouge activities are well suited for families. When you’ve had your fill of learning about history, you’ll want to have some fun at some of the zoos and water parks that make Baton Rouge a popular place for families to visit.

Visit the National WWII Museum

Previously known as the D-Day Museum, the National WWII Museum gives its visitors a fully immersive experience of how it was like during the second world war. It’s one of the most iconic museums in the great city of New Orleans. It is most definitely worth taking a few hours to explore.

Visit the Tiger Stadium

With the NFL season right around the corner, what’s better for reviving your love of football other than visiting one of the most popular stadiums. The best part is that after you check the stadium out, you’ll find tons of sports bars and restaurants nearby, where you can share your love of the sport with some of the locals.

Explore the Nightlife

Visiting any new place for the first time means that you must check out the nightlife around the city. With Louisiana being one of the states known for its love for the blues, you have to try to catch a live performance at a local bar/restaurant.

One of the best things about the state of Louisiana is that there’s always something there to do for everyone. It’s great for families, couples, or just solo travelers. If you’re planning on visiting it for the first time, you might want to make it a lengthy trip, as there’s going to be a lot to see.

Fly to Hawaii for as low as $195

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Palm trees, black- and white-sand beaches, clear teal waters — Hawaii truly is paradise. Unfortunately, tickets to paradise tend to be pretty pricey for most of the year.

However, from now through March, multiple airlines are offering cheap fares to popular tourist destinations in Hawaii. Tickets from a variety of cities across the U.S. go for as low as $195.

Honolulu

You can find the most heavily discounted fares to Hawaii from West Coast cities like Los Angeles and Seattle, but there are also solid deals from New York City-area airports.

With prices dipping below $200, this bargain offer to Hawaii is not sure to last. In order to snag discounted tickets to the Aloha State, be sure to book your tickets within the next couple of days.

Deal basics

Airlines: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines. Routes: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle and many other U.S. cities have discounted routes to Honolulu, Lihue, Kahului and Kailua-Kona. How to book: Search through Google Flights to determine your ideal dates, then book directly with the airline of your choice. Travel dates: Generally from November 2022 to March 2023, excluding holidays. Book by: Within the next two days.

Kudos to Scott’s Cheap Flights for sourcing this deal. The site’s Premium membership — which comes with a 14-day free trial and costs $49 per year — has discounts of up to 90%. The Elite membership flags premium economy, business-class and first-class deals.

Sample flights

For the rest of 2022 and well into the new year, multiple airlines are offering discounted routes to popular Hawaii destinations like Honolulu, Kailua-Kona, Lihue and Kahului from an array of U.S. cities.

Here are some highlights we’ve bookmarked:

Hawaiian: Oakland International Airport (OAK) to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), starting at $195.United: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Kona International Airport (KOA), starting at $237.United: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to KOA, starting at $268 (includes a layover in San Francisco).United: Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) to Lihue Airport (LIH), starting at $355.Delta: Denver International Airport (DEN) to Kahului Airport (OGG), starting at $357 (includes a layover in Seattle).Hawaiian: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to HNL, starting at $489.

When booking flights, we recommend using Google Flights first to search for your best available dates and then booking directly on the airline’s website. Direct airline bookings are more reliable in the event your flight faces a cancellation, delay or booking change.

For a Feb.1 flight from JFK to Honolulu, Google Flights shows two bargain options. The first is a Delta flight that leaves for Hawaii at 9 a.m. and costs $479; the other is a Hawaiian flight that takes off at 10 a.m. and is $489. Both flights are nonstop.

However, if you opt for the Delta flight, the only available returning flight to New York that would keep the fare low is a Hawaiian one that departs at 4:55 p.m. This flight returns to JFK on Feb. 8, so you’d have a weeklong vacation in Honolulu.

GOOGLE FLIGHTS

Keep in mind that since these two flights to and from Honolulu are operated by two different carriers who don’t have any codeshares, you’d have to book your tickets separately on Delta’s and Hawaiian’s websites.

Booking tickets on two separate websites seems like it could be a hassle, but the process is relatively seamless. Once you click on the Google Flights link to book your flights, just click on the two websites — Delta and Hawaiian both take you to the checkout page for the individual tickets.

These tickets are for the airlines’ basic economy options. Neither Delta nor Hawaiian allows passengers to select seats or make changes to their flights with basic economy.

HAWAIIANAIRLINES.COM

While basic economy may be restrictive, it offers very low fares. Also, in this case, the flights between JFK and Honolulu are nonstop, so you also don’t have to deal with any layovers. The $479 price tag for these two flights is considered to be on the low end, according to Google Flights, so it’s still worth acting on.

Maximize your purchase

When booking your tickets, use a card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases like The Platinum Card® from American Express (5 points per dollar on airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year), Citi Prestige® Card (5 points per dollar on airfare), Citi Premier® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve (3 points per dollar on airfare), American Express® Gold Card (3 points per dollar on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel) or the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (2 points per dollar on travel). Check out this post for more on maximizing airfare purchases.

The information for the Citi Prestige Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Bottom line

Even though the fares in this deal are for basic economy — which can be restrictive — many flights are nonstop. Also, the prices are significantly lower than normal. If you want to save even more on airfare, you can book your departing and returning flights through two different airlines to get the best possible price.

All the airlines listed in this bundle are offering such steep discounts during Hawaii’s peak tourist season in the winter, and well into 2023. So, if you’ve been contemplating a trip to the Aloha State, now is the time to act.
