Visit the Glazer Children’s Museum in Tampa, Florida
TODAY'S ADVENTURE
Visit the Glazer Children’s Museum in Tampa, FloridaWhen traveling with kids, I find that the children’s museums, where ever available, is a great starting point to teach kids about the local culture and history.
Visiting the Glazer Children’s Museum was an immediate intro to what Tampa, Florida was about, from an easy and fun perspective. And you get to learn some stuff you would never know.
Glaziers Children’s Museum Review
For instance, did you know that the first commercial flight in the entire world was from St. Petersburg to Tampa? January 1, 1914 the Mayor of Florida paid $400 (equivalent to almost $10,000 today) for the first flight.
You can get the full scope of the city and how it works.
And since Tampa is on a bay. Water is a huge component and there is a great display teaching all about it as well.
But on the third floor of the museum is a traveling exhibit hall. When I visited it the Wizard of Oz display was there.
Make sure to check the schedules of their traveling exhibits so you can tell your children all about it before arriving.
I learned so much from this museum, that when I did the tour of the city so much fit into place for me.
History of the Glazer Children Museum Tampa FL
It was founded in 1986.It first opened as a small storefront in the Floriland Mall. The Museum quickly outgrew its location so in 1989, with support from the City of Tampa, it moved into a larger location, just north of Lowry Park.It was built to educate children and, called Safety Village, which provided a series of miniature buildings simulating a small town.In January 1999 after renovations, the new image was unveiled as Kid City: the Children’s Museum of Tampa. In September 2001, a new toddler exhibit opened.A plan to make it bigger and better was created in 2003.The City of Tampa provided the Museum a land lease in downtown Tampa to construct the facility. In October, 2007, the Museum was named the Glazer Children’s Museum in honor of the Glazer Family Foundation’s gift of $5 million.Construction of the building began in March 2009 and was completed in April 2010.The Museum opened its doors on September 25, 2010.Video Fun

Is the Capital One Venture Rewards card worth it?
HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL
Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.
If you’re wondering whether a travel rewards credit card is right for you, consider your travel goals and determine which card fits your lifestyle the best and whether it’s worth paying the annual fee.
If your end goal is to save on travel, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card might be the perfect pick since you can redeem your rewards directly for travel or transfer them to over a dozen airline and hotel partners. Its annual fee is $95, which is affordable, but still a consideration.
Here’s what makes the Capital One Venture worth it.
Welcome offer
For starters, the Capital One Venture is currently offering new applicants 75,000 bonus miles after making $4,000 in purchases during the first three months.
Those bonus miles are worth $750 when redeemed toward travel, but potentially much more if you’re able to leverage the Capital One program’s various airline and hotel partners, easily offsetting the $95 annual fee. As such, we value this sign-up bonus at $1,388.
WYATT SMITH/THE POINTS GUY
Earning Capital One miles
One of the top reasons many people love the Capital One Venture is its straightforward earning structure of 2 Capital One miles per dollar on virtually anything you buy. You also don’t have to worry about miles expiring as long as you keep your account open, and there’s no limit to how many miles you can earn.
A big factor as to why the card is so attractive is that there are no categories to memorize or quarterly bonus categories to activate — it’s an ideal card for busy people who want to simplify their earning strategy and redemption options.
Related: How (and why) you should be earning lots of Capital One miles
Redeeming Capital One miles
This is where the card truly distinguishes itself. The two foremost ways to redeem your Capital One miles are at a fixed value or by transferring them to airline and hotel partners.
You can redeem miles at 1 cent apiece with the fixed-value option toward eligible travel expenses charged to the card. For example, say you reserved an Airbnb home for $750 for an upcoming vacation. You could redeem the 75,000 miles earned from the sign-up bonus to offset the Airbnb purchase and cover the entire stay from the miles earned on your Capital One Venture.
AIRBNB
This particular redemption option comes in handy when you don’t want to jump through hoops to find award availability, or if you like to stay at non-chain hotels. This is also a popular redemption approach when you find cheap airfare and prefer to save your other valuable transferable points for more aspirational redemptions.
Another way to redeem your hard-earned Capital One miles is to transfer them to partner airlines or hotels. This can be a great choice when you are ready to maximize some award chart sweet spots and stretch your miles.
Related: How to use your Capital One miles at a fixed value
Other perks & benefits
The Capital One Venture proves its worth with other ongoing benefits, too. They include:
Application fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck: Up to a $100 credit every four years.Lounge access: Cardholders get two complimentary passes to Capital One or select Plaza Premium lounges.Travel accident insurance.Secondary auto rental coverage.Extended warranty protection. No foreign transaction fees.Although you hopefully won’t have to use some of these benefits, like the travel accident insurance, others, like the Global Entry and lounge perks, can save you money on a regular basis.
PATRICK T. FALLON/BLOOMBER/GETTY IMAGES
Bottom line
The Capital One Venture is a favorite among travelers for a few reasons.
Its simple earning structure of 2 miles per dollar makes it easy to maximize on almost every purchase. The ability to redeem miles both directly for travel at a fixed rate as well as transferring to various airline and hotel partners makes it extra versatile. And then there are the value-added benefits like statement credits for Global Entry and relatively robust travel and purchase protections.
In short, it’s a strong all-around choice for travelers, both frequent and otherwise, and well worth the $95 annual fee.

Gumbo Shop New Orleans Review
TODAY'S ADVENTURE
Gumbo Shop New Orleans ReviewYou can not come to New Orleans and not eat home-style cooked gumbo. Sure, practically every restaurant you go to has gumbo offered on the menu. But it is always better to go to the ones that specialize in it. And with some help from NOLA CVB, Gumbo Shop was the chosen one for our Gumbo introduction.
The Gumbo Shop New Orleans
The Gumbo Shop is a landmark and considered one of the top, award-winning restaurants for Gumbo, Creole cooking, and Louisiana-style cooking in New Orleans.

Plus, the restaurant was super kid friendly with plenty of food for my kids to try out if they weren’t into what mommy was having. Although my oldest was dying to taste some Gumbo thanks to the huge influence of “Princess and the Frog” movie.

Fun Facts About Gumbo
And the Influence it Has on Louisiana Cooking and History
In New Orleans, the French influence over local cooking was just the beginning. Throughout the years African slaves were often the cooks. Plus, due it this being one of the nation’s busiest ports citizens from Germany, Ireland, the French Caribbean Islands, Italy, Greece, Croatia, and more recently, Asia has arrived here in droves all adding to the uniqueness of Louisiana’s cooking. The Choctaw Indians introduced powdered sassafras or filé which they called “kombo” to settlers as a staple for one of many styles of the indigenous soup we now call gumbo. The word Gumbo comes from the African word “kingumbo” meaning the vegetable okra.A gumbo usually contains either filé or okra as a thickener.Gumbo is a blend of many cultures, so is the origin of the word. However, the base of most gumbos is “roux” – flour and fat with seasonings that are browned to provide an almost nutty flavor. It is often cited as an example of the melting-pot nature of Louisiana cooking. The first documented references to gumbo appeared around the turn of the 19th century.Today, the gumbos people are most familiar with are seafood gumbo and chicken and sausage gumbo. But that merely scratches the surface of gumbo cookery, both historical and contemporary.

More About Gumbo Shop
Gumbo is a dish that originated in southern Louisiana from the Louisiana Creole people during the 18th century. It typically consists primarily of a strongly flavored stock, okra, meat or shellfish, a thickener, and seasoning vegetables. The dish likely derived its name from either the Bantu word for okra (ki ngombo) or the Choctaw word for filé (kombo). In New Orleans, what is known as Creole gumbo generally ranges from house to house though still retaining its African and Native origins. The dish combines ingredients and culinary practices of several cultures, including West African, French, Spanish, German, and Choctaw.Video Fun

New sneak peeks as Disneyland’s most affordable hotel becomes Pixar Place Hotel
HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL
Unlike the wide variety of lodging choices at Disney World, Disneyland only has three on-property hotels: The original Disneyland Hotel, the higher-end Disney’s Grand Californian and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel. Of those three, only one comes in at a more budget-friendly level: Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.
Originally built in the 1980s and purchased by Disneyland in the 1990s, Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel has historically been the least exciting of the three Disneyland options, missing the luxury of the Grand Californian and the history of the Disneyland Hotel. For a number of years, it sported a 1920s California boardwalk theme. However, with us now solidly in the 2020s, Disney is giving the hotel some much-needed attention, and it is in the process of becoming the only fully Pixar-themed hotel in the U.S.
On track to complete its transformation by this winter, Disney continues to provide updates and sneak peeks at the Pixar Place Hotel, so here’s the latest.

Disney has shared that over the next few months, the lobby will continue to evolve into a bright space with nods to Pixar characters in its artwork and theming.

Families will likely be excited that the hotel is also getting a new “Finding Nemo”-inspired water play area that will include not only a new splash pad but also a 186-foot Crush-themed waterslide. This exciting addition is set to debut to hotel guests in late summer 2023.
Do note that until then, guests are able to utilize the pools at the Disneyland Hotel with a shuttle available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
When completed, the pool deck will also provide views of the nighttime fireworks at Disneyland.
DISNEY
The Pixar Place Hotel will also debut a new restaurant in the fall of 2023 named Great Maple. Disneyland has shared that it will feature an all-day service with upscale comfort food such as buttermilk fried chicken and maple bacon doughnuts, Cajun shrimp and cheddar biscuit Benedict and soda pop-braised baby back ribs. We also learned that a new concierge lounge is coming to Pixar Place Hotel.

Also of note for guests deciding where to stay at Disneyland is that in 2022, the hotel introduced a new walkway that gives guests a special side entrance to Disney California Adventure.

Rates at the Pixar Place Hotel currently start around $450 per night but keep in mind if you stay there in the coming months, there will likely be some ongoing construction as progress is made toward this big retheme and renovation project.
And, of course, the Disneyland hotel development doesn’t stop with this one property as just down the street, the Disneyland Hotel is also making some progress toward the September 2023 debut of the new Disneyland Hotel Villas.

Mexican Food the Rocco Taco Style – Romantic ‘Night’ Out
TODAY'S ADVENTURE
Mexican Food the Rocco Taco Style – Romantic ‘Night’ OutEating out with our kids is one of those things that looks great on paper, but in reality, isn’t all that much fun. If you want to sit back and enjoy a drink and savor the meal, it’s best not to do it with a two-year-old that doesn’t eat anything and an eight year old that is bored and restless within seconds. So what’s the solution? Date Night! And we chose a restaurant in South Florida. And take a look at our Rocco Taco Review in Florida!
As a continuation for our romantic ‘night’ out (technically it’s afternoon since I don’t trust anyone to put my baby to bed) we picked Rocco’s Tacos on Clematis Street in West Palm beach to be the hot spot for us.
Rocco Taco Review
I absolutely love sitting outside on a popular street watching people and action pass right by me. I can do this for hours on end. Luckily, when we arrived, there was a great spot for us. And with a pitcher of White Wine Sangria, I sat back and enjoyed my husband and the afternoon.
We started our meal, after checking out Rocco’s Tacos menu, with their classic Guacamole dish. I think it’s the most common thing to start with since they have a station just for it and the waiter said it as though it was a must. And I’m not one to say no to good Guac, so we started the meal out right.
Next my hubby asked for the ceviche special – he’s a huge ceviche fan. And he loved it!
And of course I had to have the special Rocco’s Tacos. I always love to taste what the restaurant’s signature dishes are, and I wasn’t disappointed with the choice. You can pick either chicken, veggies, beef, or shrimp. I got the shrimp order and it was great!
When the waiter came around to see if we wanted anything else, we were so stuffed from all the food that we had to pass. Even on coffee / tea. Needless to say, the platters are large and super affordable.
My Take On Rocco Taco:
This was a great way to spend some ‘couple time’ together. Even though I find Valentines Day to be a bit cheesy (do you really need to be dictated when to have romantic time together) this would be the perfect spot for a fun, tasty date with your honey- anytime of the year!
Tip:
We arrived relatively early and got our spot outside. The restaurant inside, which is quite large, was still partially filled.
By the time we were ready to leave, a couple of hours later, the place was so full there was literally a line outside waiting to get in. My advice, make a reservation! The people who reserved were walked right in.
Important Information for Rocco’s Tacos Restaurant:
Rocco’s Tacos – West Palm Beach Address: 224 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach Phone: 561-659-1940 Cost: (10-30) $$
NOTE: They have five locations in Florida, pick the one you are closest to and enjoy!

Marriott Bonvoy Refer-A-Friend New Member Bonus
HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL
Once in a while we see hotel loyalty programs offer bonuses to new members. At the moment Marriott Bonvoy, which is the world’s largest hotel loyalty program, has such an offer, as flagged by Danny the Deal Guru via Frequent Miler. While it’s not the most exciting offer on earth, it’s at least worth being aware of.
Marriott Bonvoy’s refer-a-friend promotion
At the moment Marriott Bonvoy has a promotion for new members, but only if they’re referred by existing members:
If you’re referred to Marriott Bonvoy by an existing member, you’ll receive 2,000 bonus points per stay in the first year, for up to the first five stays; that’s a maximum of 10,000 bonus pointsFor the existing Marriott Bonvoy member doing the referring, you’ll receive 2,000 bonus points for each stay the new member makes, for up to the first five stays; you can earn bonuses for referring up to five friends, for a total of up to 50,000 Bonvoy bonus points through this offerIn order to take advantage of this, the member doing the referring needs to send an invitation via this link, which requires putting the email address of the person you want to refer, plus your name, email address, and Bonvoy number (so you can be rewarded).
Marriott Bonvoy refer-a-friend promotion
There’s no published end date for this promotion, so it could be pulled at any time.
Is this Bonvoy promotion worth it?
If you’re going to join Marriott’s loyalty program, then obviously some promotion is better than no promotion, and this is the only offer I know of.
For some context on how worthwhile this is, I value Bonvoy points at 0.7 cents each. In other words, this promotion offers ~$14 of value (how much I consider 2,000 points to be worth) per stay, both for the person referring and the person being referred.
That’s pretty decent, especially if you’re making shorter stays at less expensive properties. This is also in addition to all the other points earning opportunities through the Bonvoy program.
If you want to further jumpstart your points earning, don’t forget about the below co-branded Marriott credit cards.
Please add a credit card to compare.>Bottom line
New Marriott Bonvoy members can earn 2,000 bonus points for each of their first five stays if they’re referred by an existing member (and the members referring receive the same). It’s always nice to get an additional bonus for joining a loyalty program, so hopefully some non-Bonvoy members can benefit from this.

Hilton launches another budget brand amid economic uncertainty
HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL
Editor’s note: This story has been updated with more details on the newly announced brand.
The economic waters powering the travel sector might be fine for now, but one can’t help but feel the world’s largest hotel companies are moving as quickly as possible to prepare for turbulence.
Hilton kicked off the most recent hotel earnings reporting cycle by citing a $209 million first-quarter profit and better-than-expected data showing travel demand outperformed pre-coronavirus pandemic levels in many segments. Those hoping for economic uncertainty-fueled bargains were out of luck, as hotel rates at Hilton were 11% higher for the first three months of this year than during the same time in 2019.
But Hilton isn’t keeping its eye off the more affordable end of the hotel sector.
Hilton’s CEO Christopher Nassetta first indicated during an investor call last month that a “very low end of the midscale” extended-stay brand is in the works at the company and will be officially announced within the next two months. This comes months after the company debuted Spark, an economy brand targeting the premium end of budget travel.
“My history of living through the Great Recession is that it’s your lower cost-to-build products that have been very high-margin because people make the most money doing it and they’re the lowest risk and they’re the easiest finance. Those are the ones that get going the fastest,” Nassetta said of the extended-stay brand that has yet to be publicly named.
Further details of the new brand came to life this week, as Hilton officially launched the yet-to-be-named brand (currently dubbed Project H3) that targets guests staying 20 nights or longer.
Hilton’s new extended-stay brand is currently called Project H3. COURTESY OF HILTON
This extended-stay brand offers what Hilton depicts as apartment-style accommodations featuring fully equipped kitchens, ample storage and multipurpose furniture that can provide a mix of workspace and living space. Project H3 hotels are meant to draw inspiration from farmhouse design, with wood tones and “light industrial touches.”
Lobbies at Project H3 hotels appear utilitarian, based on the renderings provided. Laundry facilities, a gym, a market and storage for food delivery are all clustered within steps of the check-in desk. Outdoor patios at these hotels will include fire pits, grills and seating areas. Additionally, there will be a free breakfast with grab-and-go items.
Regarding potential hotels for the new brand, the Hilton leadership team noted that there are more than “100 active development conversations” currently underway. Hilton anticipates the first hotel to break ground later this year, with an opening slated for mid-2024.

Extended-stay brand explosion
Hilton’s new brand launch arrived weeks after Hyatt announced a new extended-stay brand, Hyatt Studios. Hyatt leaders indicated that they were targeting the “upper-midscale” segment (competitors here include Hilton’s Hampton brand) with Hyatt Studios. Nassetta noted the new Hilton brand would park below Home2 Suites in the company’s overall brand food chain.

Extended-stay brands exploded in popularity during the pandemic, as they maintained a relatively high occupancy rate during lockdown due to these hotels attracting a mix of essential workers and guests who used long-stay rooms and suites as temporary housing.
While the hotels are generally more affordable for travelers, they make owners more money because they aren’t as expensive to run as a full-service hotel like a Hilton or even a Hilton Garden Inn. Extended-stay hotels don’t require as many workers and costly amenities like an on-site restaurant or spa.

Marriott’s Residence Inn extended-stay brand is widely viewed in the hotel industry as a cash cow for hotel owners for this very logic.
“We aim to serve any guest, anywhere in the world, for any travel need they may have, and this new brand represents a greater opportunity for us to grow our portfolio while providing the reliable and friendly service our customers expect from Hilton,” Nassetta said in a statement Tuesday.
He noted on the company’s investor call last month that economic uncertainty wasn’t the reason for launching the brand. Instead, he noted that it was because “customers want it” and “owners want to build it.” The new brand, which will feature only new-build hotels, likely won’t start opening hotels until later in 2024 or into 2025.
“We think customers are going to love this. It’s something different. It’s at a lower price point, but the margins are much higher than that,” Nassetta said. “We think that is a mega-brand opportunity for us.”
Hilton’s migration to budget travel
The new extended-stay brand isn’t Hilton’s only budget darling. The company announced Spark in January, and the first hotels for the premium economy brand are expected to open later this year.
There are more than 300 Spark deals in various stages of negotiation, Nassetta said last month. He previously indicated Spark will eventually be the company’s biggest brand by hotel count, as it is fueled by quickly converting existing hotels under different branding into the new Spark look.
It appears Hilton is having a ball dipping its toes in the waters of budget hospitality. Nassetta went a step further on the first-quarter earnings call by claiming Spark “is probably the most disruptive thing that we will have ever done.”
Laundry room of a Project H3 hotel. COURTESY OF HILTON
That’s a bold statement considering Hilton lays claim to such culinary disruptions as the brownie, the red velvet cake and the martini. Hilton was also early to the game in offering a wide-scale rollout of digital room keys. Apparently, Spark trumps all of that in the eyes of the Hilton executive floor.
Nassetta’s claim isn’t as outlandish as it first seems once you dig in. Spark adds a new entry point to the broader Hilton Honors loyalty program by introducing the brand to more cost-conscious travelers.
Spark and the new extended-stay brand can be a way for travelers to get an early taste of Hilton. Assuming they like what they experience, they may eventually branch out to more expensive brands like Conrad and Waldorf Astoria.
No signs of economic turmoil … yet
While there was plenty of chatter about economic uncertainty during Hilton’s earnings call, the company isn’t seeing a slowdown in booking data.
Business and group travel in the U.S. outperformed pre-pandemic levels for the second quarter in a row, and forward-looking group business bookings are 13% above 2019 levels. That’s a strong indicator that hotel rates aren’t going to come down anytime soon.
Nassetta wasn’t ignoring the idea of an economic slowdown and recognized there is a likely slowdown coming amid the push to bring inflation down in the U.S. But that doesn’t mean a collapse for hotels, either.
“Do I feel any different than I did a quarter ago? Yes,” Nassetta said last month. “The economy appears to be more resilient. Inflation is being tamed. I have a higher degree of confidence the Fed will land the plane reasonably well.”
