Earn Hyatt points on travel

World of Hyatt rewards its members for each hotel stay across its global portfolio. You can earn points on all Hyatt hotel stays booked directly through Hyatt’s website, which includes Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties, the Thompson and Joie de Vivre brands added as part of the Two Roads Hospitality integration and more than 50 all-inclusive resorts.

Hyatt awards 5 points per dollar spent on Hyatt hotel stays and qualifying room charges (room service, bar tabs, spa services, etc.). This number is consistent across the board, so you’ll earn the same number of points at a Hyatt Regency that you would at a Hyatt Centric for the same price. Hyatt also partners with select MGM Rewards hotels and Lindblad Expeditions, where you’ll also earn 5 points per dollar spent.

Aside from hotels, you’ll earn 10 World of Hyatt points for every eligible dollar spent on FIND experiences. (Just note that Hyatt has still suspended all FIND experiences in light of COVID-19.) And unfortunately, you’ll no longer earn World of Hyatt points at Exhale spas and gyms.

Travelers with World of Hyatt elite status will earn bonus points on all hotel stays. Here’s how many extra points each tier earns:

Discoverist: 10% bonus (0.5 extra points per dollar spent).Explorist: 20% bonus (1 extra point per dollar spent).Globalist: 30% bonus (1.5 extra points per dollar spent).

So if you’re a World of Hyatt Globalist member staying at a Grand Hyatt hotel for three nights at $150 per night, you’d earn 2,925 points on your hotel stay. This haul is valued at nearly $50, based on TPG’s valuations.

$150 x 3 nights  5 points = 2,250 points.2,250 points x 30% bonus = 675 points.2,925 points earned total.

While this may seem small compared to Hilton Honors or IHG One Rewards, Hyatt has lower redemption rates than other chains. Awards start at just 3,500 World of Hyatt points per night on off-peak dates at Category 1 hotels.

Discoverist: Three meetings.Explorist: 10 meetings.Globalist: 20 meetings.

Earn Hyatt points with partners

If you don’t have any upcoming Hyatt stays and aren’t in the market for a new credit card, don’t worry. Hyatt has a couple of partners with which you can earn World of Hyatt points, including rental cars or transferring from Chase. Here’s a look at your options:

Transfer points to World of Hyatt

You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points from cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred Card to World of Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio. Best of all, the transfer should process instantly.

TPG currently values Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 2 cents each and World of Hyatt points at 1.7 cents each. However, in many cases, you can get more than 2 cents per point from your Hyatt awards, so we recommend the transfer if you have a specific redemption in mind.

Additionally, if you have Bilt Rewards, you can also instantly transfer Bilt Rewards points to World of Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio.

Earn on American flights

If you have elite status with the World of Hyatt program, you can earn Hyatt points when you fly on American Airlines. Thanks to the partnership, Hyatt elite members earn 1 Hyatt point per dollar spent on qualifying American Airlines flights.

This earning is in addition to the AAdvantage miles you’ll earn. All you need to do is link your Hyatt and AAdvantage accounts through this link.

Rent cars from Avis

Like most hotel chains, you can earn World of Hyatt points when renting a car. Rent with Avis and use the code K817700 to get 500 World of Hyatt points per rental. With the code, you’ll also receive 25% off base rates for each qualifying rental at participating Avis locations. You can learn more about this here.

Transfer points between family and friends

World of Hyatt members can transfer points between accounts free of charge. However, you can only send or receive points once every 30 days. And unfortunately, you can’t complete this transfer online. You must fill out this form (PDF link) and submit it via email. Both the member transferring the points and the recipient must sign the form before you submit it. Hyatt will complete the transfer once the form is received and reviewed.

The form notes that transfers are only permitted between accounts “to have a sufficient number of points to redeem a particular award” for the recipient. I’d avoid using this option as a way to merge two account balances.

Buy Hyatt points

The final method of earning Hyatt points is to purchase them directly. Generally speaking, you should rarely (if ever) purchase points or miles of any kind without a bonus or discount. Luckily, Hyatt runs somewhat frequent promotions for purchasing points. If you have a high-end redemption in mind and need to top off your account, buying Hyatt points is one option.

You can bookmark our permanent page for Hyatt buy-points promotions.

Related: Current promotions for buying points and miles

Bottom line

The World of Hyatt program is a favorite among award travelers. Despite a comparatively small (but growing) global footprint, the World of Hyatt program can offer a luxurious experience and a rewarding value proposition.

There aren’t a ton of different ways to earn Hyatt points, but if you combine credit card spending with a handful of paid stays, you’ll be well on your way to a free room for your next trip.

If you are planning a vacation to a sunny beach, whether for your family, friends, or colleagues, Manzanita beach is a hidden gem and one of the best options. This beautiful seven-mile beach is found in Manzanita, a small town on the North Oregon Coast. The beach resort dates back to the early 19s but has seen incredible developments to become a bustling coastal town. Manzanita‌ ‌is important for amazing mountain views, hiking trails, beautiful sunsets, fishing, and kayaking. That’s why I wanted to clarify some of the common questions that can pop up in your mind about rentals in Manzanita Beach, Oregon. I’ll let you know tips and practices in case you want to travel to this amazing side of Oregon.

Manzanita‌ ‌Rentals‌ ‌

Manzanita Beach, Oregon

This town in Tillamook County, 25 miles north or 23 miles south of Tillamook, is very charming and has very friendly people. One of the best things about this town is that you can visit any time of the year and enjoy an incredible experience with your group. The town is replete with amazing fun points for tourists, including the Manzanita Market where you can buy everything you need on vacation, and wonderful shops.

Having a great vacation experience is directly related to the quality and value of rentals, homes, or cars, available. Fortunately, there are Manzanita vacation rentals that offer high-quality rentals at great prices, hence you are poised to enjoy some of the services at very reasonable prices.

Vacation Homes in Manzanita

There are different kinds of rental homes on Manzanita beach, depending on the size of your group, budget, pets, etc.

Size

When getting a rental home for a Manzanita beach vacation, size is a key consideration. If you have a large family or group, then homes that can sleep up to 20 people are available for you. Oceanfront Historic Reed House sleeps up to 20 people, while Oceanfront Modern Lodge sleeps up to 14. The former has 7 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and a dining area for 14 while the latter has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and a dining area for 10. There are smaller homes that sleep between 2 and 8 people.

Booking

You can either book directly or through third parties, which usually attracts additional costs such as service and reservation fees.

What’s included?

The best Manzanita homes have all you need and more including well-stocked kitchens, toiletries, Wi-Fi, cable TV, etc. To avoid the problems associated with a key entry system, some homes have a keyless entry system.

Pet friendly

Manzanita has pet-friendly rental homes, hence you have no problem enjoying your vacation with your furry friends. Make sure the home you are renting is favorable for your pet.

Price

The most common prices of rental homes on Manzanita beach range from $150 to $800. This price is related to the number of people it can sleep, the quality of the home, and the technology on offer.

Car rentals in Manzanita

Moving around during your vacation period is made easy by the cheap rentals in Manzanita. With just $31, you can get a nice and comfortable car for 4 to 5 people. If you want greater luxury, you can get luxury cars at $86 per day for up to 5 people.

There are several car rental companies with excellent services. This competition helps to keep the process to tourists’ advantage. Several rental car suppliers list on car rental websites, enter your location to see a list of options. Compare the prices and select the most appropriate for you. Reserve in advance to guarantee the car is available to you.

Note:

Drop-offs and pick-ups at the airport usually attract more cost>Consider the car mileage ahead of time to help you prepare adequately and save money as much as you can.

Brand of cars available

Manzanita has diverse kinds of car brands, it depends on what you need, especially in light of the activities you plan to have on vacation in Manzanita.

ge requirement

The least age allowed to rent a car in Manzanita is 21 years, and people below 25 years may have to pay additional fees. Make sure you check the T&C of the supplier before booking.

 Insurance

All car rental companies require insurance. However, you can use your existing car insurance if you have one.

Fuel policy

This varies from supplier to supplier; full-to-full is the best option, requiring users to return the car at the same fuel level as when they got it. The unlimited miles option allows you to do extensive movement within Manzanita.

Things to check

Before finally driving off from the supplier, check the following:>Mark any dent or scratch down on your paperwork>Ensure the spare tire is inflated and necessary tools are available>Learn the peculiarities of the car, such as how to turn the wipers and lights on

Conclusion

Amazing mountain views, hiking trails, beautiful sunsets, fishing, kayaking, and many more are reasons to enjoy your vacation on Manzanita beach. Key rental details are discussed to ensure you have an amazing experience.

15 of the most beautiful villages in Spain

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information.

For anyone planning a trip to Spain, it may be overwhelming to decide where to begin. Will it be Madrid’s art, Ibiza‘s beaches, Barcelona’s tapas or Seville’s flamenco?

While Spain‘s most remarkable cities are worth a visit, so is experiencing the delights of something smaller: un pueblo. Many of the Mediterranean country’s villages, or pueblos, are exceptionally beautiful. In fact, there are so many gorgeous Spanish villages, it was difficult to narrow down this list.

However, we’ve selected 15 of the most stunning villages in Spain ideal for a charming and relaxing vacation. Some are in the mountains, some close to the seaside and some just a quick trip from a city like Madrid, Seville or Barcelona. Although many of these destinations are accessible by public transport (buses and trains), it may be best to rent a car in order to visit these villages with more ease.

ltea, Comunidad Valenciana

Take a break from the all-inclusive beach-and-beers fun in Benidorm or the crowded sands of Alicante to visit the nearby sparkling seaside village of Altea.

This whitewashed hilltop village couldn’t be more different from the high-rises of its neighboring beach towns. Wander the rocky coastline, then walk up the steep steps to the old town for panoramic views. Stop and admire the Church of the Virgin Consuelo; its blue dome brightly juxtaposed against the whitewashed walls is reminiscent of the Greek islands.

lbarracín, Aragown

Perched at almost 4,000 feet, the medieval walled village of Albarracín is pending UNESCO World Heritage status. The castle, main square and cathedral are the hot spots to see, but meandering the cobblestone streets and getting a little lost may be the best way to enjoy the village.

Frequently referred to as the most beautiful village in Spain, Albarracín’s crumbling stone buildings and tiny alleyways don’t disappoint. Just come ready to climb and wear appropriate footwear.

Cadaqués, Catalonia

One of Costa Brava’s most picturesque gems, Cadaqués is inside the Parque Natural del Cap de Creus, a nature preserve rife with hilly hiking trails and panoramic viewpoints.

If the village looks vaguely familiar, it was used as a backdrop by artists such as Salvador Dalí (he was born and buried in the nearby village of Figures) and Joaquín Sorolla, known for his seascape artwork.

Strolling the village’s cobbled streets is a joy in itself. However, the best way to see Cadaqués is high above from varying viewpoints, so put on your hiking boots and start climbing for a memorable photo.

lcalá del Júcar, Castilla de la Mancha

Home to a medieval castle and fortress, Alcalá del Júcar overlooks the Júcar River and Gorge.

Besides soaking up the traditional Spanish village atmosphere, explore the Cuevas del Diablo, caves built into the side of the mountain rock. Even during the hottest of summer days, it’s a cool 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure to cross the famous Puente Romano, a bridge that actually wasn’t built by the Romans but is still a very special piece of historical architecture.

Tejada, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Take a break from Gran Canaria’s sunny beaches to head inland for a bit of village charm.

Weave along the winding mountain roads inland to Tejada, where the white-walled, red-roofed homes and buildings sit amid the greenery of the island’s mountainous interior. Once you’ve checked out the village’s hot spots like the Abraham Cardenas Sculpture Museum or the Medicinal Plants Centre, head to the surrounding area to hike around Roque Bentayga, a towering rock formation.

San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Rioja

Wine-lovers should head to San Vicente de la Sonsierra, surrounded by vineyards in Spain’s most famous wine region, La Rioja.

The 10th-century village features a few stone towers, a hilltop castle, a Plaza Mayor and modern touches like a few colorful murals. For a little more action, head to the slightly larger, nearby town of Haro, which features a wine museum. Don’t miss tours and tastings at neighboring wineries like Bodegas Riojanes and Bodegas Castillo de Mendoza.

Potes, Cantabria

Bathed in moss and surrounded by verdant countryside and mountains, the stone village of Potes is famous for its arches and the Deva River, which runs right through the village center.

After enjoying the picturesque old town, you’ll definitely want to explore the nearby outdoor landmarks, such as the nearby climbing spot and limestone peak Naranjo de Bulnes. Eating in the village is a must: Plan to sample Cantabrian specialties like chickpea pies and stews, as well as Cantabrian game.

Combarro, Galicia

Combarro, Galicia.

It doesn’t get more traditional than Galicia’s fishing village of Combarro, located in the Rias Baixas area.

It features the customary Galician architecture hórreos, homes set upon stilts. There are more than 60 of them throughout the village, many of which are used as granaries or for food storage.

Keep an eye out for the cruceiros, special granite cross landmarks, as you lap the village and its surroundings. Eat as much seafood here as possible — shellfish and pulpo gallego (Galician-style octopus doused with paprika) are especially revered in the region.

Setenil de las Bodegas, Andalusia

It’s not easy to pick the most beautiful village in Andalusia — Arcos de la Frontera and Mijas are strong contenders, among others.

However, Setenil’s unique geography makes it one of the most impressive. Its focal point is a hilltop castle that was once an Arab fortress. The village’s white buildings are built directly into the cliffside rock, resulting in an original, cavelike structure.

Stop by one of the bars with outdoor tables set directly under the rock caves.

Hondarribia, Basque Country

One of the most colorful villages in Spain, Hondarribia spans the Spanish/French border.

Enter through the stone Santa María gate to admire the walled, vibrantly hued village center, then visit the sandy shores of Hondarribia Beach, which are just north.

Wine enthusiasts shouldn’t miss visiting the vineyards in the region which produce one of Spain’s most underrated wines, Txakoli. This is a very dry, slightly bubbly white wine with a low alcohol content — taste the variety and add on a tour at the nearby Hiruzta Winery.

One of northern Spain’s most delightful fishing villages, Cudillero is bright and compact, backed by green hills and close to beautiful sandy beaches.

Climb up to the Garita viewpoint to admire the village, lighthouse and the sea beyond. There isn’t much in the way of activities in Cudillero, but that’s all part of its charm. Sit outside with a glass of sidra (the region’s famed apple cider) paired with Asturian chorizo and cheese, chat with locals and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the village.

Deia, Mallorca

A short distance away from one of Mallorca‘s other incredibly gorgeous villages, Valldemossa, Deia is set high in the Tramuntana hills overlooking the glittering ocean.

Known for its thriving art and music community, Deia is more than just a historic village. It’s also a place for creatives to feel inspired by the elements: the mountains, the sea and the idyllic stone buildings stacked along the hill.

Despite its small size and population, there are a number of interesting art galleries and boutiques, plus a thriving Mediterranean dining scene.

Guadalupe, Extremadura

The highlight of the tiny village of Guadalupe is the monastery of the Virgin María de Guadalupe. The monastery features frescos from famous Spanish painters such as Zurbarán, and its museum showcases works from Goya and El Greco.

The monument’s exterior is just as impressive, featuring a mix of architectural styles like Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and Mudejar. Make sure to relax with a cold drink in the main plaza facing the famous Tres Chorros fountain.

Olite, Navarra

Spain is home to thousands of castles, so a small village with a castle is hardly a novelty in the country. However, Olite’s castle stands out from the rest.

Its many turrets and towers take you right back to the Middle Ages — adults will have just as much fun as kids exploring this extraordinary royal landmark. The castle was so iconic it even featured hanging gardens and a zoo with lions, giraffes and camels in its heyday (the 15th century). The castle overlooks vineyards, too, so enjoy a wine tasting while you’re there.

Buitrago de Lozoya, Comunidad de Madrid

Arrive at Buitrago de Lozoya, one of Madrid‘s most popular escapes, in under an hour from the capital. The village is surrounded by the Lozoya River, enclosed by Moorish walls. As you probably expect, Buitrago features a castle (a key feature of most Spanish villages) and a clock tower. There’s also a museum featuring works by Picasso. Hikers should head to the nearby Cuenca Alta del Manzanares Nature Reserve to trek or leisurely stroll through the wooded, mountainous scenery.

Bottom line

Spain teems with incredible beaches and lively cities — but don’t forget about the pueblos scattered throughout the country.

Spanish villages emit a very special kind of small-town charm perfect for a relaxing vacation — and most feature landmarks like castles, cathedrals and clock towers just waiting to be explored.

Delta is launching 4 exciting new routes, including Tahiti, Cape Town and Tel Aviv

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Delta Air Lines is adding some exciting new pins and lines to its route map.

The Atlanta-based airline unveiled four high-profile routes on Friday, including three new long-haul services that touch two brand-new destinations. Delta is also boosting its transcontinental network with a major expansion in Miami.

This is perhaps the most exciting network news from Delta since the pandemic began, so be sure to catch all the details below.

All the new flights will load to Delta’s schedule on Saturday, July 30. As such, fares and SkyMiles redemptions aren’t currently available, but we’ll follow up with that information when it’s available.

Los Angeles to Tahiti

Delta will become the second U.S.-based carrier to fly to Tahiti beginning later this year.

The airline will add the Faa’a International Airport (PPT) in Papeete, French Polynesia, to its route map on Dec. 17 with new three-times-weekly service from the Los Angeles (LAX) hub.

Delta will deploy a Boeing 767-300ER on the route, which will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It wasn’t immediately clear if the airline would fly one of the newly retrofitted 767-300s that feature a premium economy cabin, but we’ll update this post when we learn more.

Of all the new routes, this one is perhaps the most exciting. Of course, Tahiti is a dream destination for many travelers, and additional access from the U.S. gives travelers more options to get there.

United Airlines is currently the only U.S. carrier to serve Papeete from the U.S., with nonstop service from San Francisco (SFO). When United launched its route in October 2018, it began as three-times-weekly service. The airline has since upgraded the route to five weekly flights, citing strong demand.

Other than United, Air Tahiti Nui (the flag carrier of French Polynesia), Air France and French Bee (a French ultra-low-cost carrier) all serve Papeete from the U.S. mainland. The former two carriers fly from Los Angeles (LAX) and the latter flies from San Francisco (SFO).

Air France operates the LAX to PPT route as part of a journey from Paris. The plane flies from Paris to Los Angeles and then continues on to Tahiti — passengers can book either the first, second or entire journey on one ticket.

Interestingly, Delta and Air France are close partners. They are both founding members of the SkyTeam alliance and have a transatlantic joint venture partnership.

The two carriers will overlap with service to Tahiti on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, so there’ll be plenty of SkyTeam connectivity to the islands on those days.

Papeete is the main international gateway to French Polynesia. From there, passengers can continue on to other nearby destinations, including Moorea and Bora Bora, both just a few miles from PPT.

The only question now is how many SkyMiles will Delta charge for a business-class flight to Tahiti?

tlanta to Cape Town

This one should come as no surprise, but the airline is officially putting its new Cape Town flights on sale.

The airline will commence operations between Atlanta (ATL) and Cape Town (CPT) on Dec. 17 with three-times-weekly service. The carrier will deploy the Airbus A350 on the route, which will operate on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The A350 that Delta will deploy will feature 32 private Delta One Suites, 48 Premium Select recliners, 36 extra-legroom Comfort+ seats and 190 standard main cabin seats.

For Delta, adding Cape Town to its network has been a long time coming. Early in the pandemic, the carrier unveiled plans to connect the city with a triangle route that would tag onto the airline’s existing nonstop service to Johannesburg (JNB).

(Photo by Zach Griff/The Points Guy)

That way, the airline could efficiently use the Airbus A350 aircraft on the route without any restrictions on payload due to the high elevation of the JNB airport. The stop in Cape Town would’ve allowed for refueling at sea level before beginning the 8,130-mile trek back to the U.S.

In addition to Delta’s proposed triangle route, the airline also sought permission to launch a nonstop flight to Cape Town from Atlanta.

That plan faced competitive pressure from United, which had also filed for permission to launch a new three-times-weekly nonstop from its Washington/Dulles (IAD) hub. At the time, there were only four “slots” left to serve South Africa from the U.S. under the bilateral air service agreement between the two countries.

So, the Department of Transportation then needed to decide which carrier would win those four slots.

Ultimately, the DOT found a solution that worked for both airlines: it worked with the South African authorities to secure two additional slots, and now both Delta and United can launch their proposed nonstops to Cape Town.

tlanta to Tel Aviv

Delta Air Lines is going all-in on Israel, with a third route to the country launching next year. Delta will add three-times-weekly service from Atlanta (ATL) to Tel Aviv (TLV) on May 10, 2023.

The carrier will deploy its flagship Airbus A350 on the route, which features all four of Delta’s signature cabins. The airline will fly the route on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The new Atlanta flight will join the carrier’s existing service to Israel from New York-JFK, as well as a recently launched Boston (BOS) route.

Interestingly, the airline last flew the 6,437-mile route from Atlanta between March 2006 and August 2011, before ending it and consolidating Tel Aviv flights to New York, according to Cirium schedules.

A Delta jet in Tel Aviv (Photo by Zach Griff/The Points Guy)

While the route technically marks a resumption for Delta, it comes as Israel has become a very competitive market for U.S. airlines. During the pandemic, American Airlines launched new flights there from New York-JFK and Miami. In fact, the route from South Florida will soon be upgraded to daily service.

United Airlines flies to Tel Aviv from four of its hubs (Chicago, Newark, San Francisco and Washington/Dulles), offering plenty of one-stop options for flyers headed to Israel from anywhere around the country.

Of course, Israel’s flag carrier, El Al, also serves various points across the U.S. with its latest Boeing 787 Dreamliners. El Al’s U.S. destinations include Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark and New York-JFK.

As such, Delta will face plenty of competition for flyers headed to Israel, but the airline is likely banking on the connectivity options from its mega-hub in Atlanta to help boost the route’s prospects of success.

Miami to Los Angeles

Even though it’s “just” a domestic route, Delta’s new Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX) service is an interesting one.

For one, it technically marks a resumption for the carrier, as the airline last operated the route in August 2018, according to Cirium schedules.

But, this time around, the carrier is boosting its offerings with twice-daily flights launching on Dec. 17. Back in 2018, the carrier flew a less-than-daily summer seasonal schedule.

The airline will deploy a Boeing 737-900ER on the new transcontinental route, which features 20 first-class recliners, 21 extra-legroom Comfort+ seats and 139 standard economy seats.

Perhaps more interestingly, the new flights will go head-to-head against American Airlines and JetBlue Airways, both of which already operate the route with multiple daily frequencies.

The difference, however, is that Delta won’t offer any premium lie-flat seats on the new transcon route, whereas each JetBlue flight offers a Mint business-class product and some American frequencies are operated by wide-body jets with lie-flats.

For Delta, growth in Miami has been teased for a while.

In September 2019, Delta took a 20% stake in LATAM, wooing the carrier away from the Oneworld alliance and its former partner, American Airlines. Delta then unveiled plans to create a pan-American partnership with LATAM a few months later by creating a new “gateway hub” in Miami.

Delta previously shared that it wanted to add at least 20 new U.S. domestic departures under its proposed joint venture with LATAM.

Now, the Department of Transportation tentatively cleared the proposed joint venture last month, paving the way for the deal to proceed. While we’re still waiting on more details on the execution of the tie-up, Delta is moving forward with growth in Miami.

Timetable of Delta’s new long-haul routes

LAX — PPT 11:10 a.m. — 6:10 p.m.

PPT — LAX 8:10 p.m. — 6:40 a.m. (+1)

ATL — CPT 8:50 p.m. — 6:15 p.m. (+1)

CPT — ATL 10:50 p.m. — 8:00 a.m. (+1)

ATL — TLV 2:00 p.m. — 9:15 a.m. (+1)

TLV — ATL 11:30 a.m. — 5:55 p.m.

Can I transfer points and miles between loyalty programs?

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

One of the most common questions among individuals new to points and miles is: “Can I transfer miles from one airline, credit card or hotel loyalty program to another?”

For example, can I transfer miles from Air France to Delta? Can I keep my miles in the same program but move them from myself to my spouse? Or, can I convert my American Express Membership Rewards points to Chase Ultimate Rewards?

The answer depends on the miles you have and how you want to transfer them. So, let’s take a closer look at which programs allow transfers, which don’t, and everything else you need to know about moving points and miles between accounts.

Transferring miles between loyalty programs

In some — but certainly not all — cases, you can transfer points from one program to another. Here’s a look at when this is and isn’t possible.

irline loyalty programs

In nearly all circumstances, transferring miles from one airline to another cannot be done, even if the airlines are alliance or codeshare partners.

Unfortunately, this means you can’t transfer your United Airlines miles to Air Canada Aeroplan or Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, even though both airlines are in Star Alliance. For nearly every airline and other mileage programs, once points are added to an account, they remain in that program and cannot be moved to another program. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule.

Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways all use the same mileage program: Avios. Each of the respective airlines’ websites offers slightly different results, taxes and fees when booking an award ticket. For example, I have found it easiest to look at Qatar Qsuite availability on Qatar’s search engine, American Airlines mileage availability on the British Airways website and cheap business-class travel to Spain with Iberia.

Unlike Air France and KLM’s Flying Blue, which combines points into one account that can be used on both Air France and KLM’s websites, Avios has separate accounts and frequent flyer numbers for each of its respective airlines. Despite the lack of synchronization, transferring points from one airline in Avios to another is quite easy.

In addition, you can transfer points from some hotel programs to airline partners. Marriott offers a 3:1 transfer ratio (3 Marriott points equal 1 airline point) with more than 40 airline transfer partners, including some airlines that do not have credit card transfer partners, such as Asiana and Korean Airlines.

Hotel loyalty programs

Likewise, Hyatt has more than 20 transfer partners at a 1250:500 ratio (1250 Hyatt points per 500 airline miles), with some exceptions. Hilton allows transfers from Virgin Atlantic to Hilton at a 1:1.5 ratio (1 Virgin point equals 1.5 Hilton points), and from Hilton to more than 20 airline partners, typically at a 10:1 ratio.

Transferring points from hotels to airlines is generally not recommended unless the airline does not have any other transfer partners (such as the Marriott partner airlines stated above) or if you are transferring only a small number of points to top off your airline account for a specific redemption. Typically, travelers lose the value of their points via a hotel-airline transfer.

So if you plan on transferring from a hotel to an airline loyalty program, I recommend calculating the value of points you are transferring from one program and the value of the points you receive in the other program using TPG’s points valuation guide. Of course, even if a transfer is a poor value on paper, it can still make sense if you have no better options.

Transferable points programs

Of course, transferable credit card points like Amex Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards all transfer to a handful of different partners. This is part of what makes these points currencies so powerful, since you have numerous options for booking award travel.

For example, Bilt Rewards points transfer to American AAdvantage, Air Canada Aeroplan and Flying Blue, among others. This gives you coverage across all the major airline alliances and access to various redemption sweet spots. In turn, you can leverage Flying Blue Promo Rewards, add a stopover with Aeroplan or book Qsuites with AAdvantage.

Redeeming airline miles on a partner airline

Speaking of sweet spots, you can use the respective mileage programs to redeem award travel on partner carriers.

At times, using airline A’s points to book tickets on airline B is significantly cheaper than directly redeeming airline B’s miles. For example, Flying Blue can be used to redeem business-class tickets to Europe as well as economy tickets within the United States and to South America at cheaper redemptions and fees than booking with Delta and Virgin Atlantic for flights on their own planes.

One of my favorite sweet spots is using Turkish Airlines miles to book domestic economy tickets in the United States for 7,500 miles, or in first class for 12,500 miles instead of United miles, which are often more expensive. If you’re looking to book international business-class tickets on American Airlines flights, redeeming Etihad Guest miles for international American Airlines flights is often less expensive than booking the same flights with the AAdvantage program.

Although you cannot transfer points from one mileage program to another, many programs allow members to transfer from one account to another. The points stay within the same system, but the individual that the points are attached to changes.

Among credit card programs, Chase and Citi allow you to move points from one individual’s account to another. Just note that Chase only lets you do this within a household, while you can transfer your Citi points to virtually anyone.

For airlines, JetBlue TrueBlue and Air Canada Aeroplan do not charge fees to pool together points into an account, while Hawaiian removes fees for Hawaiian Airlines credit card holders. AmericanAlaskaDelta, Southwest, and United charge fees for transferring points depending on the number of points transferred from one account to another. Rather than transferring points from individual A’s account to individual B’s account and incurring fees with these programs, the accountholder could simply book a ticket for the other person to avoid these fees.

Thankfully, hotel points can be transferred from one account to another at HiltonHyatt, and Marriott, with no fee. While Marriott’s point transfer must be done over the phone and not online, you can transfer points to anyone you’d like.

Related: Book award travel faster by pooling your points

Bottom line

While you typically cannot transfer miles from one airline program to another, you can transfer between hotels and airlines, although this is not recommended in most scenarios. Most airlines, credit cards, and hotels allow transfers from one account to another, although some airlines charge fees to transfer points.
