Visiting New York: The Best Ways to Travel Around the City in December

Whether you’re on a family vacation or traveling solo, New York City is an exciting place to visit. There’s something to do for everyone, whether it’s visiting a museum or checking out a Broadway or off-Broadway show— there’s just so much to do! With that being said, you’ll need a way to travel around the city. New York is made up of five boroughs— Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens (you would visit East Elmhurst), the Bronx, and Staten Island— and although many of the most famous attractions are in Manhattan, the other five boroughs have something to offer as well. So what is the best way to get around in New York? Visiting New York is an exciting place to visit. Five boroughs have something to offer as well.So what is the best way to get around in NYC?

Visiting New York

On Foot

Even though New York has the largest population in the United States, it is not the largest city by land area. In fact, it’s not even in the top 20 of the largest U.S. cities by land area. This makes New York a great city to get to wherever you need on foot. You will, however, find that most New Yorker’s walk at a fast pace to get through the congestion of the city. Remember: the city itself is not the largest in the U.S., but the population is over 20 million, making it extremely congested at times.

Subways and Buses

MTA

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) runs New York’s public transportation system, and it serves all five boroughs so you can visit everything New York has to offer. You will, however, have to purchase a MetroCard when wanting to ride the subways and buses.

Subways

The subway is the quickest, most efficient, and most popular way to get around New York. If you don’t want to look like a tourist, then getting around using the subway is your best bet. Though the MTA serves all five boroughs, the subway itself does not go to Staten Island.

Buses

If you want to actually see the city as you travel, the bus is a great way to get around. The buses can even take you to Staten Island. The buses (and all transportation) run all day, every day, but it’s still important to check the routes.

By Car

Taxis

In many cities, taxis may be on the verge of becoming extinct due to rideshare services like Lyft and Uber, but the yellow cabs are still very popular in New York. Taxis are a great way to get around if you’ve been walking for a while and you decide to catch a ride the rest of your way. Taxi drivers are also required to take you anywhere in New York City, including all five boroughs.

Your Car/Rental Car

If you want to be able to come and go as you please, then driving a rental car will be best for you while enjoying your time in New York. If you’re flying in at the JFK International Airport, then you’ll be glad to know that you can easily find a rental car company nearby.

Conclusion

If you really want to experience New York like a native, then you can give all of these modes of transportation a try. Some may be more efficient than others at getting you to where you need to go. Just be sure that you know where you are going, no matter what type of transportation you use. Remember to check the subway and bus routes when using them, and to use your GPS when driving yourself.

Also, keep in mind that you may not be able to visit everything in New York in just one trip. The city is full of amazing places, and you may not have time to visit them all, depending on how long you plan to stay. But don’t worry, you can always plan another trip and visit the places you didn’t get around to the first time.
