Is the Amex Business Platinum worth the annual fee?

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

“This card has an annual fee of nearly $700” tends to cause many people to drop their jaws. The general reaction — from most people — is that there’s simply no way paying a high premium annual fee is worth it.

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express has an annual fee of $695 (see rates and fees), yet the card claims to offer more than double that in annual credits and perks.

Does that mean you should add the Amex Business Platinum Card to your wallet? It depends.

Here’s a look at what you get from the Amex Business Platinum Card each year so you can decide whether or not this credit card is a good fit for you.

According to TPG’s latest valuations, American Express Membership Rewards points are worth 2 cents apiece, making this bonus worth $3,000.

Hotel elite status

Cardmembers can register for automatic elite status with Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy. This benefit provides Gold status in both programs.

Hilton Gold status is a very valuable hotel status that provides benefits like bonus points on paid stays, complimentary bottled water, a fifth night free on award stays, room upgrades (though not to suites) and free continental breakfast or food and beverage credits. You should also receive a welcome gift at check-in, typically a snack or bonus points.

Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status is very valuable as well and provides benefits like late checkout, room upgrades (though not to suites), bonus points on paid stays, enhanced internet and a welcome gift of bonus points at check-in.

Car rental elite status

Cardmembers can enroll for complimentary elite status with Avis Preferred Plus, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards President’s Circle and National Emerald Club Executive. Enrollment in advance is required for these benefits.

Rental car elite status provides benefits like car upgrades, a free second driver and my favorite benefit: skipping the line and going straight to your car at the start of your rental. One of the best benefits of car rental elite status in any program is the ability to status match with other rental car programs, helping you gain status in numerous programs simultaneously.

Pay with Points rebate

When paying with points for a flight through Amex Travel, Business Platinum cardmembers can get 35% of their points back. This applies to two types of bookings: flights in any cabin with your preselected preferred airline or flights with any airline if the reservation is for business class or first class.

Cardmembers can enjoy up to one million points refunded through this benefit every year. Achieving this maximum rebate would require spending 2,857,143 points within a calendar year using the Pay with Points feature to book qualifying flights.

Bonus points for airfare and hotels

Business Platinum cardmembers can earn 5 points per dollar on airfare and prepaid hotel bookings made through Amex Travel. This earning rate includes bookings with Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, as well.

Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee reimbursement

Cardmembers can receive statement credits to reimburse their application fees for Global Entry ($100) or TSA PreCheck (up to $85). This benefit is available every four years for Global Entry or every 4.5 years for TSA PreCheck.

These programs allow approved travelers to move through airport security checkpoints faster, using PreCheck lanes at designated airports. Global Entry users have an additional benefit: being able to use designated lanes when entering the U.S. to move through passport control faster.

nnual Clear Plus membership rebate

Clear Plus is not a government security program but also helps approved users speed through security checkpoints at airports and select stadiums using biometrics.

Business Platinum cardmembers can receive reimbursement in statement credits of up to $189 per year for Clear Plus membership fees. No advance enrollment is required for this benefit; pay with your Business Platinum card to automatically receive a statement credit (subject to auto-renewal).

Up to $200 in annual airline credits

Traveling can sometimes come with costly fees that show up in the form of paying for checked bags or upgrading to a better seat on your flight.

Business Platinum cardmembers can choose one of the following airlines as their preferred airline: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines, Southwest Airlines or United Airlines. Choosing a preferred airline in advance is required before using this benefit, which can cover change and cancellation fees, seat selection fees, upgrade fees, checked bag fees and more.

I use this $200 annual credit on United and stock up on Travelbank credit, which essentially takes $200 off the cost of my ticket.

nnual spending credits

Business Platinum cardmembers can take advantage of lots of credits: up to $150 per year with Adobe, up to $120 per year on cellphone plans, up to $360 per year with Indeed and up to $400 per year with Dell.

The Adobe credits apply to prepaid business plans for Creative Cloud for teams or Acrobat Pro DC with e-sign for teams. The wireless services benefit is available as up to $10 per month in statement credits for wireless phone service plans paid for with your Business Platinum card. You can receive up to $90 of statement credits per quarter with Indeed. The Dell benefit provides up to $200 in statement credits semi-annually.

Enrollment is required in advance for some of these benefits. Maximizing these benefits provides $1,030 in statement credits each year. The Adobe, Dell and Indeed credits will end Dec. 31, 2024.

Other cardmember perks

Cardmembers can take advantage of several other benefits.

The first is that the Amex Business Platinum has no preset spending limit. Whereas traditional cards come with a predetermined limit of how much you can spend on your card, cards like the Business Platinum and Platinum Card from Amex don’t have these preset limits.

Instead, how much you can spend on the card changes; your payment history, banking relationship, creditworthiness and other factors determine this. This can be a great feature for businesses that spend a lot on their cards and can then pay it off quickly.

Speaking of paying bills quickly, the Business Platinum card is designed for cardmembers to pay the entire bill in full each month. If you aren’t able to pay the full amount, you may be able to carry a balance on some purchases by enrolling in the Pay Over Time feature.

Not all purchases will be eligible for Pay Over Time, and not paying your entire balance in full each month will likely result in paying interest. You also may be able to earn bonus points through offers to enroll in Pay Over Time — and you can earn those bonus points for enrolling even if you never carry a balance.

SASUN BUGHDARYAN/GETTY IMAGES

Paying your monthly cellphone bill with your Business Platinum card will also provide cellphone protection to cover your phone against loss or damage. There is a maximum of $800 liability per claim, and each claim is subject to a $50 deductible. There’s also a limit of two claims per eligible account in a 12-month period.

Covered phones are restricted to cellphone lines listed on a mobile phone plan paid with the eligible card during the most recent billing period.* Combining this benefit with the monthly wireless credits covered above is a great way to invoke insurance benefits plus a discount on your monthly cellphone bill.

* Eligibility and benefit levels vary by card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for details. Policies are underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG Company.

Related: Your complete guide to shopping protections on American Express cards

Another benefit available to cardmembers is preferred access, which can mean tickets to exclusive events, going to the front of the line for ticket sales on other events and even getting access to hard-to-find dining reservations with Resy.

When making purchases, cardmembers will earn American Express Membership Rewards points, which TPG values at 2 cents per point. Cardmembers will earn 5 points per dollar on prepaid flights and hotels booked through Amex Travel.

JW MARRIOTT MASAI MARA LODGE

Additionally, cardmembers earn 1.5 points per dollar on purchases of $5,000 or more or purchases in the following categories within the U.S.: construction material and hardware suppliers, electronic goods retailers, software and cloud system providers and shipping providers.

Earning 1.5 points per dollar is limited to $2 million of purchases, then 1 point per dollar. All other purchases also earn 1 point per dollar.

Bottom line

There are numerous benefits included with the Amex Business Platinum card. Some are annual credits and others offer statement credits monthly or quarterly. Other benefits don’t have a tangible price tag, and how you value those benefits will vary from one person to another.

Suppose you can use benefits like lounge access, statement credits and other travel perks. In that case, you’ll easily be able to offset or overcome the Business Platinum card’s annual fee each year — making it “worth it” in your situation. However, for those who struggle to use the card’s credits or have many of its benefits through other credits in their wallets, it may be difficult to justify paying the $695 annual fee.

Mexico’s Beach Resorts Increase Staff To Fight Sargassum Ahead Of Summer 2024

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Mexico’s Beach Resorts Increase Staff To Fight Sargassum Ahead Of Summer 2024

Quintana Roo’s hoteliers and authorities work together to face a massive arrival of sargassum in the 2024 season.

“Some hotels have up to 300 employees ready to collect sargassum, depending on the resort’s size, because there are some with very large beach fronts. However, if sargacero vessels are put in operation, collection will be much easier. They have worked,” said Jesús Almaguer Salazar, President of the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres.

Resorts managers have also spoken to authorities regarding the ocean barriers to prevent the seaweed from washing ashore.

Source: Traveling Lifestyle – Playa del Carmen (April 29, 2024)

“We have been talking for months with the Naval Region Admiral, and thanks to that, anti-sargassum barriers are being placed from Puerto Morelos to Mahahual… These barriers significantly reduce the arrival to the beach Almaguer stated.

Some of the most popular beaches in Quintana Roo are installing up to 8,600 meters of anti-sargassum barriers. This reinforces the labor of 22 small boats, an ocean vessel, four beach sweepers, 11 algae collectors, and eight amphibious bands to control sargassum in 2024, according to REPORTUR.mx.

For its part, the Secretary of Navy (Semar) has 22 smaller vessels ready to support the “Natans” ship operations, according to El Heraldo.

Cancun Resorts Brace For Massive Sargassum Seaweed Influx

Hoteliers are also lobbying for the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) to rethink the type of population the state houses so the national government allocates more funds for the particular issues this region has, sargassum, for instance.

Meanwhile, due to low temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean, sargassum season in Quintana Roo started several weeks later than usual.

So far, the most affected beaches include Playa del Carmen, Sian Ka’an, Cozumel, Tulum, and some coasts between Cancun and Puerto Morelos.

But it doesn’t mean these beaches are dirty all day long. Authorities work unstoppably to clean them as soon as possible.

For the time being, tourism projections have been positive and hoteliers expect figures to continue growing during the rest of the year.

“We had a very good (Easter) season. That serves as a base for the rest of the year. It is very important to have passed Holy Week without serious incidents,. We all know that it is complicated because there is a lot of land tourism. But we are very happy. We are having good results and we hope to continue like this,” Almaguer stated.

You can still book these Mother’s Day hotel packages for a relaxing getaway

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Arguably, no one deserves to be spoiled more than Mom, and what’s more special than a weekend away with daughters, sons or multiple generations, or even a solo trip? This Mother’s Day, dozens of fabulous hotels and resorts in the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean are offering experiences and packages that go far beyond the typical Mother’s Day brunch (although many offer those, too!), from wine tastings to sunset yoga sessions. You might even be able to earn and burn some points while treating your mom, too.

Whether she loves breakfast in bed, luxurious baths or toasting with bubbly (or maybe all of the above), we’ve got a package and resort for moms of all kinds. Ahead, find the best last-minute hotel packages to book for a Mother’s Day to remember.

For the green thumbs: The Newbury Boston in Boston

THE NEWBURY BOSTON/FACEBOOK

The Newbury Boston’s front yard is the Boston Public Garden, the first public botanical garden in the U.S., so it’s a particularly lovely place to stay in the spring when tulips, pansies and cherry trees are in full bloom. The hotel’s “Spring Escape” package treats mom to the most elegant of escapes. Not only do package guests get an overnight stay with breakfast for two at Contessa, The Newbury’s rooftop restaurant with a glass-enclosed terrace, mom will be presented with a seasonal bouquet from Winston Flowers — the family-run florist got its start on Newbury Street in the 1940s — and a Veuve Clicquot basket tote complete with a bottle of citrusy Yellow Label Veuve Clicquot to toast with. Art-loving moms should take time to peruse the hotel’s own on-site collection and visit the Museum of Fine Arts nearby.

Package rates begin at $975 per night.

Island time: The Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu

EQROY/SHUTTERSTOCK

Hawaii’s Pink Palace, The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Resort Collection property on Waikiki Beach, harks back to the glamorous 1920s. Originally opened in 1927, the hotel still offers a historic wing where guest rooms have dark wood furniture and fuschia and platinum accents, as well as a modern tower with more contemporary accommodations and private balconies (every room in the Mailani Tower has an ocean view).

The “Pampered in Pink” package, offered as an upgrade on stays from May 9 through 13, helps moms immerse themselves in everything the historic hotel offers. The package includes a pink pinstriped robe to keep, a cute tote bag and a toast for two at either the Mai Tai Bar or the Malulani Pool, lined with oversized pink deck umbrellas. A fragrant floral arrangement will help ease Mom into relaxation mode, but she can stay as busy as she likes, as Royal Hawaiian guests can participate in resort activities such as yoga, aqua Zumba and meditation.

Rooms start at $452 per night, with the package add-on for $300.

For the ultimate breakfast in bed: The Darcy in Washington, DC

While she sleeps in (or participates, if she’d like), other family members will get a gourmet cooking class and learn how to make perfect omelets, fluffy pancakes and layered yogurt parfaits that look as good as they taste. Once the breakfast is ready, the family will serve their mom in a stylish guest room with modern furniture and original artwork. Trust us, she will be grateful for the delicious gesture — and no mess to clean up after!

Package rates start at $369 per night. This also includes a $75 dining credit and a dozen roses. The stay must take place May 11-13.

For unforgettable views: The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad in New York City

The hotel’s new “Rose and Renewal” experience from Augustinus Bader, a skincare brand founded by an expert in regenerative medicine, includes a rose petal foot bath followed by an invigorating dry brushing session.

A package highlight, weekend high tea in Nubeluz for two is the chance to treat mom (and yourself) to the most decadent tea time with truffled grilled cheese, caviar selection and, of course, Champagne. Chef José Andrés’ special occasion-worthy rooftop bar and restaurant offers one of the best views of the city skyline.

Package rates start at $2,000 per night. Book using promotional code “FML”; valid May 10-12.

Little indulgences don’t stop there, though. Bath turndown service, including bath trays with salts and aromatherapy, as well as robes and slippers, is also included in the rate. Deserving moms can soak up some vitamin D at reserved patio seating and pool chairs at the rooftop pool, Lala’s. 6 Ways Travel Improves Your Overall Health and Wellness

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

6 Ways Travel Improves Your Overall Health and Wellness

In this article, we will share six ways that travel improves the overall health and wellness of many individuals.

Over the last decade, travel has become more accessible than it ever has been in the past. From road trips to international excursions, there are many ways that people can begin to experience the world around them from a new perspective.

Not only is traveling an exciting way to explore new places, but it also has many other benefits to the human body. In this article, we will share six ways that travel improves the overall health and wellness of many individuals.

Recommended Reading: If you’re looking for more useful information, check out 5 Simple Yet Impactful Tips to Have Healthy Travel

It Improves Mental Health

One common health benefit of traveling is that it has a positive impact on mental health. With the stress of everyday life, it can be hard to take time out to cultivate yourself and your relationships. This often leaves people feeling as though they are disconnected from others and their environment.

Traveling allows individuals the chance to break out of this path by experiencing new things and taking a break from the stresses they feel on an everyday basis. In addition, exposing your body to new bacteria and pathogens in different parts of the world can help improve overall health in the future. Although it sounds strange, it has been shown that when we encounter different viruses and diseases in our lives, our bodies learn how to fight them off naturally.

This is one reason why children who grow up in cities where they are constantly exposed to new people have a more well-rounded immune system when they get older.

Don’t forget to get travel insurance for your trip—get coverage for: • Medical emergencies • Stolen or lost goods • Canceled flights and more I’ve been using VISITORS COVERAGE for years and highly recommend it!

n Opportunity to Be Active

Many health care professionals recommend regular exercise as a way to improve health and wellness. This same advice can be applied to travel, as many travelers take an active role in transportation throughout their journey. Whether it is bicycling through Amsterdam or surfing the waves of Australia, traveling allows individuals to partake in physical activity no matter where they are.

In addition, it offers more time to exercise. If your routine is typically not conducive to fitness because you are on a tight schedule, a getaway allows you a chance to refresh your mind and body connection.

6 Ways Travel Improves Your Overall Health and Wellness
Whether it is bicycling through Amsterdam or surfing the waves of Australia, traveling allows individuals to partake in physical activity no matter where they are. llows a Chance for Social Connection

Arguably one of the biggest health struggles that people face involves loneliness and isolation. Although it is easier than ever to connect with others through technology, many individuals still feel separated from their friends and family.

Traveling offers a chance to reconnect with lost relationships in addition to making new ones along the way. It provides an opportunity for you to have quality time and deepen friendships with the people that you love.

It Sparks Inspiration

For many, travel sparks an internal spark of inspiration and creativity. Whether it is new scenery, different cultures, or just new experiences in general, traveling offers a refreshing way to stimulate the mind and find new ways to challenge yourself.

With many innovative new companies in the hospitality industry, it is easy to travel with minimal stresses. Storage companies make it easy to have a seamless travel experience because they offer convenience luggage storage in popular cities like Miami, New York, and Paris.

Essential Travel Resources

❗Don’t forget travel insurance

This company is the one I trust, it’s one of the most essential things for any trip. It has your back in case you get sick abroad, or have an accident.

🎒Pack smarter, not bulky

Check out this vacation packing list, including all the essentials you need to pack when traveling, from travel clothing to backpacks and more.

🏡Where to Stay – Here are Suggestions

This is my favorite place to look for accommodations, it offers different types, a ton of locations, and good price options.

🗺️Get Around Hassle-Free

This one is the perfect option to look for different transportation options between cities, from flights, buses, and taxis to minivans and more.

🛫Find Cheap Flights

Whenever I need to fly, I head to this website for low-cost flights.

Offers an Opportunity for Self-Care

With daily demands piling up and the majority of the workforce feeling overworked, travel offers a way for people to practice true self-care. While this can mean different things to different people, it typically involves exploring new places and feeling relaxed for a change. Taking time out from the daily grind is more important than ever in order to get back to your roots and remind yourself of what’s important. One way to truly practice self-care is by using your time off to check an item off your bucket list or see an old friend. When you have this time to getaway and recharge, you will enter back into your daily routine feeling rejuvenated. As you do so, however, make sure to provide yourself with quality protection by choosing the best trip insurance. That way, you’ll focus more on self-care without fearing for your safety and well-being.

Travel Provides New Experiences

In life, we have a tendency to rely on old routines in order to feel safe, but when you are constantly visiting the same lunch spot or hanging out with the same people, it can be hard to truly live life to the fullest. Traveling allows you to live in the moment and explore new places without being tied down by old habits. Passport expiring soon? Visit these countries within your 3-month renewal deadline

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

Have you looked at your passport’s expiration date recently? If you think you’re in the clear for summer travel because you have six months or less remaining until your renewal date, think again.

Even those with less than eight months of validity remaining on their passports may already find it’s too late for summer travel to many countries. This is because of the six-month validity rule that you’ll find applies to most European countries in the Schengen Area — including France, Italy and Spain — which all require your passport to be valid for a minimum of six months after entry.

Europe isn’t the only place you need to be careful: This six-month validity rule also applies to large portions of Africa, Asia and South America. Additionally, many other countries are even stricter and enforce three-month validity requirements for passports. This can further limit your travel options if your passport expiration date is looming.

Couple that with wait times for passport renewals — which range from two to three weeks for expedited service to six to eight weeks for regular processing — in the U.S. In the United Kingdom, wait times can last at least three weeks for regular processing, one week for expedited service or one day if you can travel to a passport office for the fast-track service. With wait times in mind, if you’re not diligent, you can quickly find yourself traveling nowhere soon.

Don’t despair, though. You can still travel internationally with just a month or two left on your passport before expiration. I learned this firsthand when researching vacation alternatives for my family. I had to cancel our spring break trip to Kenya (with a six-month passport validity requirement, plus a visa) after I discovered my son’s five-year passport would expire a month after our planned trip.

Wondering where you should head instead? Here are all the options where passports need to only be valid at the time of entry or for the duration of your stay. Note, though, that you will still need a blank passport page for an entry stamp unless otherwise noted below.

DARIO AMADE/GETTY IMAGES

The Bahamas and Bermuda

If you’re looking for Caribbean surf and sun, these two countries will welcome you as long as your passport is valid at the time of entry. Extra bonus: Both Bermuda and the Bahamas are included in U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s 15 international preclearance locations. The Bahamas also offers TSA PreCheck in Nassau, making your return to the U.S. almost as easy as a domestic trip.

Canada

Oh, Canada. Thank you for being a friend. The entire country — including summer favorites such as Victoria and Vancouver in the west and Francophile destinations like Montreal and Quebec, plus Toronto, in the east — only requires a passport to be valid at your entry date. Like Bermuda and the Bahamas, Canada also offers CBP’s preclearance program at locations in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta; Toronto; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Montreal; Ottawa, Ontario; Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia; and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

United Kingdom

England turned out to be my family’s spring break savior. London provided an easy getaway from the East Coast, and there was nonstop airfare available to book within a short time frame. If you choose this option, you can visit Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with the same passport as long as it’s valid for the duration of your stay. (Note, though, that you can’t combine a trip to the U.K. with European countries that have three- or six-month passport validity requirements.)

Ireland

The Emerald Isle is another easy-to-reach country from the U.S. (and another spot my family has visited for a surprisingly sunny spring break in the past). Ireland only requires your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay. Extra bonus: Customs preclearance is available at airports in Dublin and Shannon before you return home.

Mexico

Another easy destination to reach from much of the U.S. is Mexico, and it doesn’t require passports to be valid past the duration of your stay.

Seychelles

Long-haul travel is an option with a passport that has a short validity. Head directly to the Seychelles, a country comprising 115 sun-kissed islands off the eastern coast of southern Africa. You’ll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay (and plenty of sunscreen).

US options

It’s worth noting that there are several U.S. territories and commonwealth islands where you won’t need a passport at all to visit, including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

These 3 Popular Countries Launched Digital Nomad Visa In April 2024

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

These 3 Popular Countries Launched Digital Nomad Visa In April 2024

Italy, Turkey and South Africa have embraced the digital nomad trend, offering visas tailored to this demographic.

According to these governments, digital nomads will bring entrepreneurial ideas to their countries, which will be valuable to technology and similar sectors.

Let’s review the specifics and requirements to get a digital nomad visa in these countries.

Italy

This Town In Italy Is Giving 3 Months Of Free Rent To Digital Nomads

Italy’s long-awaited digital nomad visa is finally available for non-EU citizens who carry out “a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely, both as a worker self-employed or as a collaborator or employee of a company even if not resident in Italy,” reads the decree.

Requirements:

Eligible candidates must earn €28,000 annually or more.Robust health insurance that covers you for your entire stay. Proof of accommodation for the time the visa is valid.Proof that you have been a digital nomad or remote worker for longer than six months.Criminal records.

The visa is valid for one year and it can be renewed if the applicant has the same conditions.

Digital nomads must be tax-compliant in Italy before applying for this visa. The Italian government will contact the taxation office in the applicant’s country of origin regarding taxes.

If interested, visit an Italian diplomatic-consular office to start the process.

Turkey

Turkey Joins The Hype And Launches Visa For Digital Nomads

The Republic of Türkiye is now offering a digital nomad visa for international remote workers.

The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry gazetted the requirements for those who are interested.

Requirements:

Candidates must be aged 21 to 55 years old.A university degree.Digital nomads must be employed, self-employed, or hold a business contract with an overseas company.Eligible candidates must earn $36,000 or more per year. A valid passport.

Successful applicants will obtain a Digital Nomad Identification Certificate. Then, they have to submit this certificate and the rest of the documents to a Turkey visa center or consulate to get the actual visa.

South Africa is the latest African country to offer a visa for “highly skilled workers” in the technology sector (some exceptions apply). Nomads will be allowed to live and work in this country for a set period.

Requirements:

Proof that you earn ZAR 1 million per year (around $53,000).The foreign company you work for, may need to register and comply with South Africa’s PAYE tax system.Proof of a rental contract, a lease or a hotel booking for the time you’ll be in the country.Health insurance tailored for digital nomads working abroad. An employment contract or any other document that proves you are self-employed.A valid passport.

According to a decree released in February, visas may be issued for up to three years.

Applicants who will only stay in South Africa for less than six months won’t be subjected to income tax.

Amex Business Green Card Review: Not Worth It

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Link: Apply now for the Amex Business Green Rewards Card

Amex has lots of great cards earning Membership Rewards points. While there’s not a “one size fits all” best card earning Amex points, I can tell you with certainty that the Amex Business Green Rewards Card is particularly unrewarding. I wanted to take a closer look at the card in this post, and explain why I generally wouldn’t recommend it.

mex Business Green Card Basics For April 2024

The credit card landscape is very competitive nowadays, and people will typically choose a credit card for any of a variety of reasons. Maybe it’s the rewards structure, maybe it’s the perks, or maybe it’s the overall value for money with the annual fee.

In the case of the Amex Business Green Rewards Card, I’d say the card is quite uncompetitive, both in comparison to other Amex cards, and in comparison to cards from other issuers. Let me explain.

mex Business Green Card Welcome Bonus

The Amex Business Green Card is offering a welcome bonus of 15,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $3,000 within the first three months. Personally I value Amex points at 1.7 cents each, so to me that bonus is worth $255, which isn’t great, especially in comparison to other welcome offers out there.

Amex’s general application rules apply, though it is worth being aware that this is a hybrid card and not a credit card, so this card doesn’t count toward Amex’s five credit card limit.

Redeem Amex points for some awesome travel rewards mex Business Green Card Annual Fee

The Amex Business Green Card has a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, and then it’s $95 per year after that. There’s no cost to add authorized users to the card.

mex Business Green Card Rewards Structure

The Amex Business Green Card has a pretty straightforward rewards structure, as you can earn:

2x Membership Rewards points per dollar spent with amextravel.com1x Membership Rewards points on all other purchases

A few more things to note:

The card has foreign transaction fees of 2.7%, so I wouldn’t recommend making purchases in foreign currencies with the cardThe card has no pre-set spending limit, so this could be a useful option when making big purchasesAmex Membership Rewards can be transferred to airline & hotel partners, so there are lots of ways to use these rewards

So many cards offer a great return on everyday spending or valuable bonus categories, so the rewards structure on this card is pretty lackluster.

Fly Singapore A380 Suites with Amex points

Is The Amex Business Green Card Worth It?

I have a really hard time getting excited about the Amex Business Green Rewards Card, given that the card essentially offers 1x points on a vast majority of purchases. I’d say the card would be perfectly fine if it didn’t have an annual fee, but it does have an annual fee after the first year.

Therefore I can’t really make sense of the value proposition of the card, especially compared to some other cards out there. Let me share some of the cards I’d consider in place of the Amex Business Green Card.

The information and associated card details on this page for the Amex Business Green Rewards Card has been collected independently by OMAAT and has not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Why You Should Get The Amex Blue Business Plus Instead

If you’re looking for a reasonably priced Amex card that earns Membership Rewards points, consider The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express (review) instead:

The card offers 2x Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 spent every calendar year (1x points thereafter)The card has no annual fee (Rates & Fees)

There’s simply no competition between the two cards — why would you get a card with an annual fee that’s less rewarding than a card without an annual fee?

Earn points at a faster pace with the Amex Blue Business Plus

The Chase Ink Business Preferred Is A Better Option

When it comes to $95 annual fee business cards you really can’t compete with the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (review). This incredible card offers a massive welcome bonus of 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $8,000 within three months.

The card also offers 3x points on the first $150,000 spent on combined purchases every cardmember year in the following categories:

TravelShipping purchasesInternet, cable, and phone servicesAdvertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines

You can also complement that with the other no annual fee cards earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points. On top of that, the card offers valuable perks like rental car coverage and cell phone protection.

Earn 3x points on travel with the Chase Ink Business Preferred

Bottom Line

The Amex Business Green Rewards Card is one of Amex’s business cards that earns Membership Rewards points. The card has a small welcome bonus and an annual fee that’s waived for the first year, though otherwise the card doesn’t have many redeeming qualities, as there are better options out there.

The information and associated card details on this page for the Amex Business Green Rewards Card has been collected independently by OMAAT and has not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Rather than getting the Amex Business Green Card, consider the:

Amex Blue Business Plus Card, which has no annual fee and offers 2x Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 spent every calendar yearChase Ink Business Preferred, which offers a massive welcome bonus, up to 3x points in certain spending categories, and great perks

Does anyone see value in the Amex Business Green Card?

The following links will direct you to the rates and fees for mentioned American Express Cards. These include: The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express (Rates & Fees).

Rechecking bags and clearing security could end for certain international connections in US

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Travelers arriving in the U.S. from certain overseas destinations may soon be able to skip one of the biggest pain points of international travel: rechecking a bag and reclearing security before connecting to another flight.

Delta Air Lines tells TPG it’s “working closely” with international and U.S. government authorities on a pilot program that would eliminate some security requirements for passengers arriving from an international flight.

Want more aviation news? Sign up for TPG’s free biweekly Aviation newsletter.

The pilot program would involve certain flights from Incheon International Airport (ICN) in Seoul, South Korea, TPG has learned.

Once rolled out, it would be a first-of-its-kind program following congressional authorization in recent years.

Congress approved pilot program

The Defense Reauthorization Act passed by Congress in late 2022 contained a provision allowing the Transportation Security Administration to implement pilot programs that would allow passengers from certain, set destinations to continue on to connecting flights without additional security screening — for them, or their luggage.

Capitol United States
ANDREY DENISYUK/GETTY IMAGES

The law authorized the TSA to launch pilot programs for travelers arriving from up to six international points of origin.

Any such program would be contingent on the U.S. government coordinating with foreign counterparts to ensure that country’s and airport’s security protocols are, at a minimum, on par with those in the U.S.

How it would work

There would be other rules for any such program, too.

Under the 2022 legislation, these passengers forgoing additional security would not be allowed to access their checked luggage until they arrive at baggage claim at their final destination.

They also wouldn’t be able to come into contact with passengers arriving from other international flights — which means any airport deploying such a pilot program would need to have the infrastructure for such a passenger flow in place to support these requirements.

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

And, the TSA would have to ensure there would be no reduction in security standards throughout the pilot program.

No specifics on first pilot program, yet

So far, details for the first seamless connection pilot are sparse; Delta told TPG it doesn’t have specifics on the program or its timing just yet but said it is working with federal and international authorities “to bring it to life.”

“We look forward to sharing more details later this year,” a spokesperson added.

delta at ATL
On the tarmac at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

Delta currently flies from Seoul to four of its U.S. hubs: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). It’s not clear how many of these airports might be involved in such a pilot program.

In a statement to TPG on Thursday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which oversees airport customs facilities, added it is likewise “currently working with the airline industry on baggage innovating efforts to help improve the passenger journey through the CBP process.”

Eliminating a travel pain point

For many frequent international travelers, rechecking a bag and clearing security a second time are among the biggest points of friction when making a connection following an international flight.

That’s particularly true for Global Entry members who often speed through passport control in a matter of seconds, in some cases.

Typically, passengers must wait for their bags after deplaning and proceeding through passport control, then replace a bag on the carousel before proceeding to their connection. They also have to go back through security. While some big airports have special “recheck” baggage and security lines, passengers at many airports end up just going through the regular TSA checkpoint — almost as if they’d just arrived at the airport as a local passenger. (The only exception is when passengers clear security abroad, at a U.S. preclearance facility — such as in Canada, Dublin and a handful of other locations.)

flags
SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

The U.S. Travel Association, a frequent advocate for more seamless travel experiences in the U.S., called these pilot programs “long overdue” in a statement to TPG.

The organization added it is “deeply supportive” of the one-stop security program, “given its ability to remove frictions and create a more seamless travel experience.”

common option in the future?

Could skipping baggage and security rescreening be a norm for more passengers flying from more origin cities — and on more airlines — in the future?

That will depend on how the pilot program(s) go, the way the law is written.

Within five years, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA and CBP, is tasked with reporting to Congress on the process’s benefits, challenges, effects on passengers, security implications … not to mention the feasibility of expanding it into a more permanent program.

7 Incredible Hidden Gems In Alabama To Visit In Summer 2024

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

7 Incredible Hidden Gems In Alabama To Visit In Summer 2024

While Alabama might not be known as a vacation destination like Florida or California, it boasts fantastic attractions that will make your stay a blast. However, you don’t have to stick around the most popular tourist spots. How about you visit something unique no other state offers?

On this list, you will find the 7 incredible hidden gems in Alabama to visit in 2024 that will make your friends and family want to vacation in the Cotton State too. Here they are.

labama’s Natural Bridge, Haleyville

Source: alabamawaterfalls.com

Natural Bridge in Winston County is another hidden natural wonder of Alabama. It’s 148 feet long and towers up to 60 feet, which makes it the largest natural bridge east of the Rockies.

To get there, you have to hike a 2-mile-long trail. But don’t worry, the terrain isn’t difficult. After you come back, you can buy souvenirs at a tiny gift shop and refuel at a picnic area. The site is open all year round and there is a small admission fee – so come prepared, you might need cash.

Rattlesnake Saloon, Tuscumbia

Source: Lee Stevenson (Google Maps)

Are you a fan of Western movies? In that case, you simply must visit Rattlesnake Saloon in northwest Alabama. This unique restaurant features old-timey saloon decor, fantastic dishes, horseback rides, and live music.

However, it’s not just the Western theme that makes this place so special. It’s nestled inside a natural cave, which will take your dining experience to a completely different level.

Tinglewood Carvings, Montevallo

With its Tinglewood Carvings, Orr Park is yet another nature preserve that has been kept secret for years. And you now have a chance to discover it. But why Orr in particular? The story goes like this: in 1993, some trees in the park were destroyed by a storm. But instead of taking them away, Mr. Tingle carved them into various fairytale-like creatures and made the trees live forever.

If you wanna get the most out of your visit, aim to arrive on the 7th of September when it hosts the famous Tinglewood Festival. You can look forward to a whittling contest, car show, tractor show, and plenty of delicious food.

ve Maria Grotto, Cullman

If you’re into art and history, put Ave Maria Grotto on your travel bucket list. This 4-acre park is set on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman and it features 125 miniature replicas of religious structures from around the world, such as Montserrat, the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, or the Tower of Pisa.

Apart from being pretty, it’s a shrine of great symbolism. All created by a Benedictine monk Brother Joseph Zoettl, it shows what years of faith, craft, and dedication can result in. So come to take a minute to reflect and soak in the meditative atmosphere. Who knows what else you will find here.

Dismals Canyon

Beautiful canyons can also be found outside of Arizona, and one of them is set in Alabama. It’s home to an array of geological formations, such as sandstone cliffs, natural bridges, and waterfalls. On the other hand, the lush vegetation provides the perfect conditions for various plant and animal species, some of which are even endangered.

If you can, stay overnight, as Dismals Canyon is home to bioluminescent worms called “glowworms”. They require a specific habitat and only live in a few parts of the world. Take a guided night tour to learn more about these fascinating creatures and see them up close. Cabin rentals are available.

Neversink Pit, Fackler

Image via @peterkbrandon

Neversink is a breathtaking 162-foot open-air pit located in Jackson County. You can admire it from the edges, while experienced climbers can bring their gear and descent to the bottom of it.

The hike to the pit is short but rather strenuous – not recommended for kids. However, it shouldn’t take you more than 40 minutes plus you can be pretty sure there will be no one else around – perfect to disconnect and enjoy the solitude of nature.

Note that a permit is necessary but can be required online here. Also, there is very poor phone coverage. We recommend you come with someone for your safety.

Bamahenge, Elberta

Southern Alabama isn’t just about the sunny seashore and its beaches. Not far from Josephine, you will find something you probably wouldn’t expect in such a setting – an American Stonehenge.

The replica of the English Stonehenge was created by an artist Mark Cline and offers much more than “just” a circle of megaliths. There are also huge fiberglass dinosaurs and other quirky sculptures that transform Bamahenge into an unconventional art installation.

Hyatt’s Mr & Mrs Smith partnership goes live with more than 700 boutique and luxury hotels

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Just when folks may have been wondering if Hyatt and its popular World of Hyatt loyalty program were losing some luster, the hotel giant’s Mr & Mrs Smith acquisition rollout shows this is no hotel loyalty underdog.

Hyatt bought Mr & Mrs Smith last year, but the luxury and boutique hotel booking platform’s hotels weren’t fully integrated into the World of Hyatt loyalty network. That changed today, as more than 700 Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are now bookable via Hyatt booking channels. The partnership comes amid Hilton snatching away the Small Luxury Hotels of the World partnership Hyatt held for years and after Marriott seized Hyatt’s MGM Resorts partnership.

But comparing the Mr & Mrs Smith partnership to what Hyatt had with SLH should leave World of Hyatt members feeling pretty happy with the new deal. Hyatt’s partnership with SLH included around 350 hotels, whereas the more than 700 Mr & Mrs Smith hotels included in this first batch is supposed to be just the beginning phase of more high-end properties joining World of Hyatt.

“Our members truly value World of Hyatt, and we’re always looking for new ways to engage guests, help them get the most out of their travels and reward them for experiencing what the world has to offer — from cozying up in a secluded treehouse in the Arctic Circle, reigning over an English country manor, glamping under starry desert skies or going wild in a jungle villa perched above Pacific waters,” Amy Weinberg, Hyatt’s senior vice president of brand, loyalty and data, said in a statement.

The launch adds more than 20 new countries to World of Hyatt’s global footprint. Reports indicate Hilton’s new partnership with SLH is starting out with just around 100 hotels, so Hyatt is more than picking up the slack left from the SLH partnership going away.

Hyatt’s new geography thanks to Mr & Mrs Smith

Hyatt now has a presence in countries like Namibia, Fiji and the British Virgin Islands thanks to the first batch of Mr & Mrs Smith hotels rolling out into the World of Hyatt network. The partnership features some remarkable vacation opportunities like Zannier Hotels Sonop (pictured above) in Namibia, a luxury campsite with just 10 tented suites on top of boulders in the Namibian desert.

Other opportunities include a luxe getaway within Finland’s portion of the Arctic Circle at Arctic Treehouse Hotel, which offers a mix of villas and suites overlooking a wintery paradise. Kisawa Sanctuary in Mozambique sprawls across nearly 750 acres on Benguerra Island off the coast of eastern Africa and features an arrival gift of a complimentary 60-minute massage and a personalized jet lag defeater treatment — oh, and each private residence here comes with a private stretch of beach, an infinity pool and butler service.

You’ll also have the opportunity to book a stay at Uxua Casa, a small luxury hotel of 10 private casas in the seaside village of Trancoso in Bahia, Brazil. The stylish getaway features bespoke designs and creations from local artisans near a picturesque stretch of shoreline.

“I’m not allowed to have favorites — because it’s like children: You’re not allowed to have a favorite child — but if I was to have a favorite, maybe this property would be it,” Tamara Lohan, Mr & Mrs Smith co-founder and CEO, said with a laugh regarding Uxua Casa.

While Hyatt declined to provide a full list of the first batch of Mr & Mrs Smith hotels rolling into World of Hyatt ahead of the launch, you can see those now by heading to the World of Hyatt explore hotels map and selecting “Mr & Mrs Smith” on the brand filter page.

Which Mr & Mrs Smith hotels will participate … and which won’t?

There is some brand and property shuffling taking place on various fronts amid the ongoing game of changing partnerships across the hotel industry.

More than 60 hotels Hyatt partnered with via SLH will re-join Hyatt via Mr & Mrs Smith on May 15, but a specific list of those properties was not included in time for publication.

The first batch of participating Mr & Mrs Smith hotels might include more than 700 properties, but a Hyatt spokesperson told TPG more hotels will be added quarterly. Mr & Mrs Smith adds more than 30 properties a month to its roster, and some — but not all — of those would also join World of Hyatt.

Mr & Mrs Smith hotels that won’t join World of Hyatt have a variety of reasons for doing so. Some are small, family-run hotels that likely don’t have the technology capabilities to link up to World of Hyatt. Others have brand conflicts: Several Six Senses hotels are on Mr & Mrs Smith, but the brand is part of IHG Hotels & Resorts and the IHG One Rewards loyalty program.

We’re curious if Mr & Mrs Smith eventually becomes a way to earn and redeem World of Hyatt points at some ultra-luxury brands like Aman, Belmond and Rosewood — all of which have a presence on the platform, but we didn’t get a clear response here from Hyatt.

“We expect to welcome more Mr & Mrs Smith hotels to World of Hyatt in the future, and it is possible that one of the hotels/brands mentioned … could decide to opt into participating in the future,” a spokesperson said via email.

World of Hyatt benefits at Mr & Mrs Smith

Participating Mr & Mrs Smith hotels will be considered a brand in terms of World of Hyatt’s Brand Explorer award redemptions, so a stay will go toward earning you a Category 1-4 free night award. World of Hyatt members will also enjoy other membership perks like earning 5 base points per dollar spent on the nightly rate at a Mr & Mrs Smith hotel.

While Mr & Mrs Smith hotels won’t participate in World of Hyatt’s award chart, any room at a participating Mr & Mrs Smith hotel available for a cash rate will also be available for World of Hyatt members to book with points.

Some examples of rate redemptions include a stay at the mountain retreat Life House, Berkshires, where award redemptions start at 8,750 World of Hyatt points per night. Award redemptions at the seaside No. 42 by Guesthouse, Margate, in the United Kingdom start at 16,250 points per night. An award stay at Hotel Aguas Claras in Costa Rica will start at a little more than 24,000 points per night.

Eligible nights at participating Mr & Mrs Smith hotels will go toward earning tier status and Milestone Rewards. Additionally, members at the Discoverist, Explorist and Globalist tiers will earn their respective bonus points following a stay.

Those who book with World of Hyatt points will have resort fees waived. World of Hyatt members booking a stay at a Mr & Mrs Smith property will also enjoy the signature “Smith Extra” included at each hotel, which often ranges from welcome cocktails to homemade cocktails and late checkout, depending on the location.

Elite tier benefits World of Hyatt Globalist members enjoy, like free breakfast, are not going to be standard offerings at participating Mr & Mrs Smith hotels. However, Globalists might receive an upgraded room upon arrival based on availability, and some Mr & Mrs Smith rates do include breakfast as a standard offering.

“We are continuing to evaluate ways to enhance guest experiences and member experiences, especially for our most valued elite members,” said Laurie Blair, Hyatt’s vice president of global marketing. “So, this is just the start of the of the relationship with Mr & Mrs Smith.”
