Cancun Hotels Filling Up Fast For The Summer Despite Early Hurricane Season

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Cancun Hotels Filling Up Fast For The Summer Despite Early Hurricane Season

Even with the threat of a more than active tropical weather season in the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun is hotter than ever with vacation travelers.

Tourist bookings for what is considered by many the slow season are coming on strong this year. This calls into question whether the popular tourist destinations of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum really have a slow season anymore.

Strong Summer Season

It may only be early July, but the resorts and hotels in Cancun are well over 60% full at this point and according to local officials, reservations are continuing to be strong.

“We must remember that many of the reservations, at least 50%, are made with less notice, which means that they are often last minute,” said Association of Hotels of Cancún, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres President Jesús Almaguer Salazar. “Which is why we believe we have a good pace prior to the start of the period.”

In fact, he mentioned that several popular resorts and hotels in the Mexican Caribbean are already full for the season.

According to the Mexico Ministry of Tourism, an estimated total of one million travelers are expected in the Mexican Caribbean during the summer travel season.

Cancun Remains Popular

The Mexico Ministry of Tourism recently reported that Cancun remains one of the top tourist destinations in the entire country with the highest level of hotel occupancy.

Of the 12 travel destinations surveyed by the ministry, Los Cabos and Cancun both topped the list during the first quarter of 2024.

Travel Budgets Going Up

Because of the strong demand for the summer travel season, the average nightly room rate is also up in the Mexican Caribbean, which is causing travelers to have to increase their budgets when traveling for a vacation getaway.

According to reports, travelers to the State of Quintana Roo, which includes Cancun, are budgeting around $1,000 per person. About 26% of that budget is also being used to travel to nearby cities.

Looking at resorts and hotels in Cancun for the end of this month, five-star hotels are $331 per night, four-star hotels are averaging $123 and three-star hotels are in the range of $55 per night. Google hotels rates these average room night rates as “typical”.

What Travelers Need to Know

If you are planning a vacation getaway to the sun, sand and surf of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum or other destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, now is the time to book your summer travel.

With some preferred resorts and hotels already full, the availability of the best rooms at the best prices are quickly becoming limited.

Tourists looking for the best deals for the summer will want to reserve their hotel rooms as quickly as possible. The overall occupancy level is well over 60 percent for the season which means room rates will be increasing as the demand increases.

Travelers are advised to be sure to secure cancellable reservations in the event of a tropical weather system vacation impact and to have travel insurance when visiting the Mexican Caribbean during the summer travel season.

The same advice is also recommended for booking flights as the airfare prices will also rise along with the increased summer demand for vacation getaways to Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean.
