Capital One launches vacation rentals: Earn 5 miles per dollar plus a $50-$100 experience credit

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Hotels can be great — especially when you snag a great deal on points and can get perks like free breakfast thanks to your status with the brand.

But sometimes you’re traveling with your family or a group of friends, and a hotel just doesn’t cut it — you need a vacation rental.

Now, Capital One is giving eligible cardholders the option to earn bonus miles and enjoy premium benefits during those times. After joining the hotel program space in 2023 with its Premier and Lifestyle collections, Capital One has announced that it’s adding vacation rentals to both collections.

These vacation rentals have launched in more than 30 locations nationwide, including destinations like Sonoma, California; Hilton Head, South Carolina; Breckenridge, Colorado and Austin; it has plans to expand to more domestic and international locations.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Venture X Business cardholders can access both the Premier and Lifestyle collections, while Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Spark Miles for Business cardholders can only access the Lifestyle Collection.

Here’s everything you need to know about these vacation rentals and whether they’re worth booking.

Capital One vacation rental benefits

Eligible cardholders will earn 5 Capital One miles per dollar on vacation rentals in the Capital One Premier and Lifestyle collections. Cardholders can also redeem Capital One miles for bookings with these properties at a rate of 1 cent per mile.

Additionally, you’ll enjoy these benefits:

Experience credits: You’ll get an experience credit ($100 for Premier Collection stays, $50 for Lifestyle Collection stays) for amenities like in-home chef meals, prearrival groceries and mid-stay property cleanings. The specific experiences covered will vary based on the property you book.Destination experts and support: All vacation rental properties in these collections are professionally managed and offer local expertise and property support. Other benefits: You’ll also enjoy perks like complimentary Wi-Fi as well as early check-in and late checkout when available.

CAPITAL ONE

The experience credit has the potential to be the most exciting benefit on this list. For hotels, these typically include a credit toward the hotel restaurant or spa. So, the option to get credit toward things you want more when traveling with a group, like groceries and cleaning services, is a huge plus.

When meeting friends at a vacation rental after work on a Friday, the last thing I want to do is have to stop for groceries on my way. The option to have them delivered ahead of time would mean I can get to my destination (and weekend plans) even sooner, adding serious value to my stay.

How to book Capital One vacation rentals

To book, go to Capital One Travel and choose “Premium Stays” (not “Hotels”) and then “Vacation rentals.” Enter your destination, dates and number of guests.

You can filter by amenities.

Then, select a property and complete your booking.

If you’re a Venture X or Venture X Business cardholder and have any of your $300 annual travel credit available, you’ll see the option to apply some or all of your credit toward your booking.

CAPITAL ONE TRAVEL

Once you’ve booked, you can focus on planning the rest of your group getaway.

Is booking a Capital One vacation rental worth it?

If you regularly travel with family or a group, booking a vacation rental in the Premier or Lifestyle Collection can be a great way to earn 5 Capital One miles per dollar on your booking; this gets you a 9.25% return according to our valuation of 1.85 cents per mile.

Booking through one of these collections also allows you to take advantage of the premium benefits you usually sacrifice when opting for a vacation rental, such as an experience credit and early check-in or late checkout. Plus, Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders can apply their $300 travel credit to these bookings.

If you’re a Venture X or Venture X Business cardholder and booked the above dates for three nights at the Austin Melody by AvantStay, your cost would be $1,601. You would earn 5 miles per dollar on your booking, for a total of 8,005 miles, which we value at $148. You would also get a $50 experience credit and could apply your $300 annual travel credit to the booking, bringing your net cost down to just $1,103. This is a 31% saving — an impressive value for a long weekend in Austin for up to eight people.

Chicory Lifestyle Collection Properties in Coachella Valley, California

Conversely, you’ll get mediocre value from your Capital One miles if you redeem them to book a vacation rental in one of these collections. You’ll get 1 cent per mile, the same value you’ll get when you redeem them for a statement credit to cover general travel expenses (and well below our valuation of 1.85 cents per mile). As such, you’ll want to compare the prices of these vacation rentals against other booking sites.

Still, when comparing options, keep in mind the value of the bonus points and additional benefits you’ll get by booking through the Premier or Lifestyle Collection.

Related: How to maximize points and miles on vacation rentals

Bottom line

Capital One has added vacation rentals to its Premier and Lifestyle Collections. When you book one of these properties, you’ll get benefits like an experience credit and late checkout, as well as elevated earning rates. Still, you’ll want to compare the prices of these rentals to ones available on other sites to ensure you’re getting the most value available.

Why Travelers Are Flocking To This Lesser-Known Caribbean Island In Spring 2024

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Why Travelers Are Flocking To This Lesser-Known Caribbean Island In Spring 2024

Conveniently reachable by plane, the Caribbean island of St. Kitts is considered to be one of the hidden gems of the region. Given its breathtaking natural beauty, extensive history, and welcoming residents, it offers the perfect setting for travelers looking to immerse themselves in an authentic Caribbean adventure.

Luxury Resorts

St. Kitts boasts numerous luxury resorts, historic distilleries, and unspoiled beaches.

In the past year, St. Kitts received 133,000 stayover visitors, indicating that national tourism is approaching pre-pandemic levels, as noted by Tivanna Wharton, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism of St. Kitts.

“We reopened in 2022, so technically that has only been one year of us reopening our borders and allowing visitors to come and I think we have done extremely well in just one year to get those numbers up,” Wharton told Caribbean Journal reporters.

More Direct Flights From The U.S.

To make things better, St. Kitts experienced a notable improvement towards the conclusion of 2023 with the commencement of regular nonstop flights by JetBlue Airways from New York to the island’s Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport.

All of these initiatives are part of the island’s broader endeavor to elevate its status as a high-end tourist destination while preserving its intimate atmosphere and attracting a greater number of visitors.

“We have actively engaged marketing companies, promoting the unique experiences that our destination has to offer. We’ve collaborated with airlines, we’ve collaborated with our travel partners and international organizations as a means of really ensuring and solidifying our position with them,” Wharton said.

Understandably, St. Kitts might not be the initial choice for travelers considering a Caribbean getaway. This is often due to its proximity to major destinations like Antigua, where travelers typically land before taking a short 20-minute flight to St. Kitts.

But there’s no need to worry. With a quick turnaround and the convenience of staying in your seat, there’s no hassle of changing flights or dealing with anything stressful.

Friendly Vibes And Unique Island’s Culture

Port Zante in Basseterre town, St. Kitts And Nevis

The renowned warmth of St. Kitts is another significant attraction. This is largely thanks to the friendly Kittitians, who are always eager to suggest their favorite dining spots and attractions to visitors.

Authenticity and the island’s charm are prevalent everywhere. Kickstart your day with a visit to one of the Saturday markets, where you can shop and savor some delectable street food.

Finally, wrap up your day with a visit to The Strip on South Frigate Bay. This cluster of outdoor restaurants and bars by the waterfront is undeniably the most sought-after destination for both locals and tourists, offering live local music and even street shows on weekends.

Here’s why you need both a personal and business Marriott Bonvoy credit card

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

One of the best perks of the Marriott Bonvoy family of credit cards is the complimentary elite night credits you receive each year — ranging from 15 to 25 nights, depending on which card you have. And if you hold both a personal and a business credit card, you earn up to 40 elite night credits annually from your cards alone. That’s quite the head start for elite status each year.

Today, we’ll review why you can get more value from having both a personal and small-business Marriott card.

Get 80% of the way to Platinum status and choice benefits

Since you can stack elite night credits, holding a personal and business Marriott card is worthwhile if you’re eligible. Most Marriott credit cards come with 15 elite nights annually — including the no-annual-fee Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card. However, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card offers 25 elite night credits per year.

You may wonder why this is relevant when several of the Marriott cards, along with The Platinum Card® from American Express, also offer Gold Elite status or the ability to earn higher status based on spending (enrollment is required). The big difference is that this automatic status doesn’t grant you the corresponding number of elite nights — so you still need to reach the normal qualification thresholds if you want to enjoy the program’s Choice Benefits or hit even higher status tiers.

Related: The complete guide to earning Marriott elite status with credit cards

If you frequently stay at Marriott properties, you can stack these 15-25 elite night credits on top of your own travel to upgrade to the next elite tier faster.

W Maldives overwater villa with pool and cabana
ETHAN STEINBERG/THE POINTS GUY

When you stack credits between a business card and a personal card that comes with 15 elite night credits — like the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card — you’ll have 30 elite night credits at the beginning of each year. Reaching Platinum Elite status requires 50 nights per year, meaning you’re already 60% of the way there. You would need to stay just 20 additional nights (or earn the nights through credit card spending on the Boundless card) to reach the next tier.

And once you’ve reached Platinum Elite status, the benefits can be incredibly valuable — including things like complimentary breakfast, lounge access and Nightly Upgrade Awards.

Those with the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant now receive complimentary Platinum Elite status each year as a perk of the card. This will entitle you to benefits like room upgrades and complimentary breakfast. However, you will not have the necessary credits (50 nights) to earn the annual choice benefit associated with Platinum status. This benefit allows you to choose from one of the following:

Five elite night creditsFive Nightly Upgrade Awards$1,000 off a mattress$100 charity donationGifting Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status to someone

That said, the 25 elite night credits you earn on the Bonvoy Brilliant can be stacked with the 15 elite nights you’ll get with the Bonvoy Business card, allowing you to start each year with 40 elite night credits. TPG director of content Nick Ewen utilizes this option and had only stayed four nights at Marriott properties in 2024 when this screenshot was taken.

Platinum Status Screenshot
MARRIOTT

That’s 80% of what you need to earn your first Choice Benefit selection (at 50 nights) and more than halfway to the 75 nights required for Titanium Elite status. Reaching Titanium unlocks another Choice Benefit along with added perks like the ability to be upgraded to standard suites at Ritz-Carlton properties.

nnual award nights

But why stop at two Marriott cards?

There are many reasons to have as many Marriott credit cards as you can get your hands on. This is because of the incredible value you can get from the anniversary award night certificates. Both the Bonvoy Boundless and Bonvoy Business cards offer an anniversary reward night worth up to 35,000 points. However, the premium Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express®  — with its $650 annual fee (see rates and fees) — now offers an annual award night worth up to 85,000 points per night. Certain hotels have resort fees.

TPG values Marriott points at 0.84 cents each, meaning 35,000 points are worth $294 — nearly triple the annual fee on those cards.

Still, depending on how you travel, you might be able to get an even higher return on these award nights. I’ve used mine at the Sheraton Grand Hyde Park in Sydney, where we were upgraded to a massive terrace suite during peak travel season, and at The St. Regis Beijing for a room that would have cost well over $300 per night.

With Marriott’s move to dynamic pricing, the ability to use these awards is less predictable than in the past. However, it’s still possible to redeem these awards for more than the cost of your credit card’s annual fee, meaning this one benefit alone can justify keeping your Marriott credit cards year after year.

Related: Ouch: It’s not just you; Marriott stays now cost more points

There are two exceptions here. The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card and Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card from Chase do not offer free night awards automatically each year. On both cards, you need to make $15,000 in purchases each year to receive a free night award worth up to 50,000 points. Certain hotels have mandatory resort charges.

The information for the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Category bonuses

Aside from annual award nights and elite night credits, having a personal and business Marriott card can help you earn more points across several spending categories. All four Marriott cards earn 2 points per dollar on everyday spending and 6 points per dollar at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program (with the exception of the no-annual-fee Bonvoy Bold; see details below).

Related: Which Marriott Bonvoy credit card is right for you?

But it’s the other bonus categories, most of which do not overlap, that can help you maximize your earnings:

Marriott Bonvoy Bevy American Express Card: Earn 4 points per dollar on the first $15,000 of combined purchases at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets each year (then 2 points per dollar).Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card: Earn 2 points per dollar spent on other travel purchases and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card: Earn 3 points per dollar on the first $6,000 spent in combined purchases each year at gas stations, grocery stores and dining.Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card: Earn 4 points per dollar on the first $15,000 in combined purchases on grocery stores and dining each year (then 2 points per dollar).Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card: Earn 3 points per dollar on dining at restaurants worldwide and on flights booked directly with airlines.Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card: Earn 4 points per dollar on purchases at restaurants worldwide, U.S. gas stations, wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers and U.S. shipping purchases.

So, if you’re a big Marriott fan and want to focus your earning strategy solely on Bonvoy points, you can have multiple cards and enjoy earning rates across several categories.

Related: Are you eligible for a new Marriott Bonvoy card? This chart tells you yes or no

Bottom line

Marriott has made it much easier to qualify for elite status by allowing customers with both personal and business credit cards to earn two sets of elite night credits each year. In fact, many TPG staffers kicked off 2024 with 40 elite night credits. When you add this to the annual award night certificates on these credit cards, it’s practically a no-brainer to hold both a personal and business card in your wallet.

These Are The 7 Most Beautiful Beaches In The Caribbean To Visit In 2024

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

These Are The 7 Most Beautiful Beaches In The Caribbean To Visit In 2024

It’s no secret that most travelers visit the Caribbean because of its stunning beaches, and idyllic postcard-like settings are not hard to find at all. There is an attractive stretch of sand everywhere you look.

However, when it comes to planning your getaway to this exotic paradise and picking the best destination, it might not be as easy.

To make outlining your itinerary as effortless as possible, we have rounded up the 7 most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean to visit this year. No matter what your preferences are, you can’t go wrong with any of our choices.

Grote Knip Beach, Curaçao

Curaçao boasts many splendid beaches. However, a lot of them are often quite busy and touristy. Not Grote Knip though. At this beach, you won’t find the western type of beach bars or fancy sun beds. Instead, you can emerge fully in the authentic Caribbean experience. Along with locals, who also often relax at Grote Knip.

Its water is bright blue, and the swimming conditions are just fantastic. You can also drift for snorkeling to the nearby coral reefs. What’s more, the beach is surrounded by rocky cliffs from which you can dive into the water. Of yours, only if you dare to (but be careful).

Even though Grote Knip is more secluded than other beaches and doesn’t feature many facilities, don’t worry that you will be left hungry. Local vendors often visit the beach and offer Curaçaoan treats and refreshing coconut water.

Eagle Beach, Aruba

Aruba is a charmer. Its beaches? Out of this world. Eagle Beach is simply a must. Not only because it’s often ranked among the best beaches in the world but it also has plenty of activities to offer to its visitors.

Apart from tanning by the iconic Divi Divi trees, chilling, and swimming, you can enjoy kayaking, sailing, and other watersports. Thanks to the clear water and rich marine life, it’s also perfect for snorkeling.

What’s more, Eagle Beach is a nesting and hatching point for sea turtles. Come at night and you might be a witness to this natural spectacle.

Surprisingly, even though it‘s a popular spot to visit, it doesn’t get as crowded as other beaches on the island. Therefore, it’s a go-to for those looking to spend their holiday in peace.

Bávaro Beach, Dominican Republic

If you’re looking for a truly indulging holiday destination where you can just relax and let anyone else take care of everything, Bávaro Beach is the spot.

It’s nestled in the famous Punta Cana and stretches over 30 miles of shore, which is lined with 5-star hotels and resorts.

Get lost in the powdery sand while strolling down the beach and forget about your everyday problems. If you like to spend your time a bit more actively, you can engage in snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, jet skiing, or take a boat tour.

Another thing you can do at Bávaro Beach is golfing. There are plenty of spectacular golf courses around Punta Cana with even better ocean views.

Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres

For those searching to enjoy the Yucatan Peninsula with fewer crowds and loud parties, consider visiting Isla Mujeres. This splendid island is set just off the shores of Cancun and offers amazing beaches.

Playa Norte is particularly renowned for its calm and shallow water, which makes it a perfect place with families with small children and inexperienced swimmers.

However, swimming isn’t the only thing you can do there. You can grab a drink at one of the bars, rent a sun lounger and relax, play beach volleyball, snorkel, kayak, or take a boat tour to Tortugranja – a cute turtle farm.

If you’re staying in Cancun, you can take a day trip there – it’s easily reachable by ferry. On the other hand, if you feel like spending more than a day on the island, there are various accommodation options right at Playa Norte.

Playa Varadero, Cuba

With more than 13 miles of soft sand, turquoise water, and an idyllic tropical setting, visiting Varadero is simply to die for.

Bask in the sun, snorkel, dive, or swim with dolphins, there is plenty to do. On top of that, you will have a chance to meet and chat with locals – they love their tourists here and are very friendly.

But it’s not just the beach and its people that make this place special. Don’t skip a visit to the town itself. It boasts interesting museums, shops, dance shows, and a dolphinarium.

Vacationing at Playa Varadero is truly a magical experience. And if you’re planning to spend more than a day there, the shore is full of all-inclusive resorts to choose from.

They all have great facilities, including fine dining options, water sports rentals, and entertainment. And compared to other paradise-like destinations, they’re still relatively affordable.

Pinel Island, Saint Martin

Set just a stone’s throw away from the North shore of the French side of Saint Martin, Pinel Island is a true oasis on Earth.

It boasts white sand beaches, pristine water, and a secluded atmosphere. There is also lush natural beauty just waiting to be explored.

Several hiking trails will take you through it. Pinel isn’t very hilly, so the hikes are easy. Yet, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the ocean and the surrounding landscapes.

Then, you can wind down in one of the two island restaurants serving Caribbean specialties, freshly caught seafood, and fantastic drinks. Day drinking is allowed in this case.

Grace Bay Beach, Turks and Caicos

A list of the best beaches in the Caribbean wouldn’t be complete without Grace Bay Beach in Turks and Caicos. It offers everything you’d expect from a tropical beach destination, including pristine water, a wide stretch of powdery white sand, and exclusive resorts with panoramic views of the ocean. What makes it truly unique, though, is the exquisite coral reefs.

You can easily snorkel off to the Bight Reef, the most popular as well as accessible snorkeling spot in Grace Bay. It boasts vibrant corals, fish, turtles, stingrays, lobsters, and much more. Other reefs are worth exploring too, but as they sit a bit further from the shore, you need to take a cruise boat.

Grace Bay Beach is also renowned for breathtaking sunsets. The best spot to watch it is from a deck of one of the beach restaurants. You can also take a sunset cruise – it‘s actually one of the top things you can do there.

‘We’re almost there’: Opening date announced for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disney World

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

What is likely the most anticipated attraction opening at Disney World in 2024, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, now has an opening date … and it’s sooner than originally announced!

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, replacing the Splash Mountain attraction in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, will open in the summer of 2024. It was originally announced to open in late 2024, so this is months earlier than anticipated.

The log flume ride — and its five-story drop — will remain, but the theme, setting and story of the ride when it reopens in a few months will all be new. The ride’s new storyline takes place after “The Princess and the Frog” movie.

Disney shares that it will be set during Mardi Gras season and that guests can expect a bayou full of music, magic and new friends, including a raccoon, rabbit and beaver. There will also be popular characters from the film in the form of all-new animatronics that will be voiced by the stars that brought them to life, including Anika Noni Rose as Princess Tiana.

It is also confirmed that there will be all-new music and some hits from “The Princess and the Frog.”

A final fun detail Disney shared is that there will be a scent of frying beignets in the attraction’s queue, which seems only appropriate for the French Quarter setting.

The former Splash Mountain attraction at Disneyland in California is also currently closed and transforming into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure on the West Coast. Disney shares that the project’s opening timeline in Anaheim is “later in 2024.” That means those looking to step into Tiana’s world as soon as possible should target a trip to Disney World in Florida as we are “almost there” to summer 2024 when we can first float down the bayou.

7 Incredible Hidden Gems To Visit In Costa Rica In 2024

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

7 Incredible Hidden Gems To Visit In Costa Rica In 2024

Known for its incredible natural beauty, tropical beaches, safety, and positive and chilled lifestyle, Costa Rica is probably Central America’s most popular holiday destination. When you’re traveling there for the first time, it’s natural that you won’t want to miss the country’s top sights.

However, there is much more in Costa Rica than the famed Arenal Volcano National Park, Tamarindo Beach, and San Juan. If you’re an explorer at heart, you will surely also like to visit some places off the beaten path.

Read on to find the 7 hidden gems of Costa Rica to embrace the authentic Pura Vida.

Mal Pais

Set on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Mal Pais is a pretty unexplored fishing village. While the neighboring town – Santa Teresa – became a popular tourist spot, Mal Pais has managed to keep its rural charm and chilled vibe, and you still have a chance to experience it.

What’s more, it offers excellent surfing conditions, and plenty of snorkeling, diving, and fishing opportunities. Wanna rather stay on the ground? Take a day trip to Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve and engage in some bird watching.

Zarcero Church

Zarcero is a picturesque mountain town set in the Alajuela Province. It’s known for its quaint atmosphere, local artisan market, and the iconic Iglesia de San Rafael Arcángel, aka Zarcero Church.

It’s gorgeous both out and inside. It creates a stunning backdrop to the gaudí-style arches of the fairytale Evangelista Blanco Brenes Park, while its interiors are decorated with impressive pastel-color chalk paintings and colorful windows.

Los Campesinos Ecolodge (Only Accessible By Hanging Bridge Over Waterfall)

Tucked away in the lush nature of Quebrada Arroyo, about an hour’s drive from the beaches of Manuel Antonio, Los Campesinos Ecolodge is a sustainable rural complex that will captivate all outdoor aficionados.

It consists of several hiking trails, hanging bridges, natural pools, waterfalls, and various viewpoints. There is also a restaurant and cozy cabins to stay at. A night or two there will help you disconnect.

Bahia Ballena (Whale Tail Shaped Peninsula)

Best Beaches in Costa Rica on Pacific Side + MAP

Bahia Ballena (translated as Whale Bay) is a beautiful stretch of sand in south Puntarenas. It’s named like that for two reasons. Firstly, it’s because of the whale tail shape of the coastline. And secondly, it’s a place where you have the opportunity to observe humpback whales giving birth.

They arrive at the coast typically between December to April and July to October. On the other hand, from June to September, Bahia Ballena offers the best waves for surfing.

Poas Volcano

When talking about the marvels made by Mother Nature, we simply must mention Poas Volcano. This active volcano is nestled in the forests of Poas Volcano National Park and is surrounded by amazing landscapes and pristine nature, that you can discover via numerous hiking trails. Furthermore, it features the second-largest crater in the world, which makes a visit to this place truly spectacular.

Hot Springs

Costa Rica is known for its geothermal activity, and a visit without a dip in one of its hot springs would be considered a crime. Luckily, there are dozens of them scattered around the country. So no matter where you’re vacationing, there is always at least one nearby.

Some of the most popular ones include Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, Baldi Hot Springs, and Ecotermales Hot Springs. Choose one or hit them all. You won’t regret it.

Tortuga Island

Renowned for exquisite white sand beaches, turquoise waters, fascinating nature, and great snorkeling and diving opportunities, Tortuga Island makes a fantastic day trip full of relaxation and fun.

You can either reach it on an organized tour from nearby coastal towns, such as Jacó, Montezuma, or Puntarenas. Another option is to take a scenic cruise. Unfortunately, spending a night there isn’t possible, but even just a day is worth it.

Even if you’re a smaller-budget business, this is likely an easy bonus to hit. Most small businesses will have no issue spending $3,000 over the course of 90 days.

BofA Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards benefits

As is typical with a no-annual-fee card, the Bank of America Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards doesn’t come with many perks or benefits. The card does come with a suite of online services to help you manage your business, including the ability to download your transactions into Quickbooks for easy organization come tax season.

10,000 HOURS/GETTY IMAGES

You’ll also have travel accident insurance, auto rental insurance, emergency ticket replacement and lost luggage assistance through the card. It’s unusual to see travel protections on a cash-back card, so this is a nice benefit.

Earning points on the BofA Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards

The Bank of America Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards card has a somewhat unique rewards structure that mirrors the personal version of the card. You’ll earn 3% back on the business-friendly category of your choice from the following list:

Gas stations and EV charging stationsOffice supply storesTravelTV/telecom and wireless servicesComputer servicesBusiness consulting services

You’ll also get 2% back on dining and 1% on everything else. However, there is a cap on bonus category spending. You’ll get 3% and 2% back on the first $50,000 in combined spending within those categories. After you meet the $50,000 limit, you’ll earn 1% on all purchases.

MASKOT/GETTY IMAGES

You can change your 3% category from month to month, which is an excellent benefit for businesses with changing needs throughout the year. For example, you may want 3% back on computer services when upgrading your software, but two months later, you might want to switch to business consulting services. This card gives you the flexibility to earn 3% where and when you need it.

This card becomes extremely valuable when your business qualifies for Bank of America Preferred Rewards. You get a bonus on all rewards earned if you have an average combined balance of at least $20,000 in eligible Bank of America business accounts.

Take a look at what this rewards structure becomes when you qualify for each of the three Preferred Rewards tiers:

Gold Platinum Platinum HonorsCombined account balance needed: $20,000 — $50,000$50,000 — $100,000$100,000+Chosen category spending:3.75%4.5%5.25%Dining spending:2.5%3%3.5%Non-bonus spending:1.25%1.5%1.75%

The Preferred Rewards program has the potential to turn this rewards structure into one of the most lucrative available, especially for a no-annual-fee business card. Platinum Honors members can make up to $2,625 in cash back each year in bonus spending.

Redeeming points on the BofA Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards

You can redeem your cash back as a deposit into an eligible Bank of America account, a statement credit on your credit card bill or a check sent by mail. Because rewards are worth a flat 1 cent each, you never have to worry about sub-par redemption options. No matter how you decide to redeem your rewards, you’re getting the same value.

Of course, this also means there isn’t a way to milk your rewards for more than their advertised value. Points and miles experts may not be a fan of cash-back business cards for this reason, but it will still make sense for some. TPG writer Ryan Wilcox, for example, enjoys the simplicity of the cash-back redemption process.

Which cards compete with the BofA Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards?

If you aren’t a member of the Preferred Rewards program through your business accounts, you may want to look at alternatives to the Bank of America® Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards. Here are some solid options:

If you want more general rewards: The Ink Business Cash Credit Card earns 5% back at office supply stores and on internet, cable and phone services, plus 2% at gas stations and restaurants. This card has a lower rewards cap of $25,000 in spending each account anniversary year, but you’ll be earning rewards across all categories simultaneously. For more information, read our full review of the Ink Business Cash.If you spend more on travel, shipping and advertising: The Ink Business Preferred Credit Card earns 3 points per dollar on up to $150,000 in spending each account anniversary year on travel, shipping purchases, internet, cable and phone services and advertising purchases with social media sites and search engines. For more information, read our full review of the Ink Business Preferred. If you don’t want any bonus categories: The Capital One Spark Miles for Business offers at least 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases with a $95 annual fee that’s waived for the first year (see rates and fees). You also have access to ample transfer partners through Capital One. For more information, read our full review of the Capital One Spark Miles card.

Is the BofA Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards worth it?

Existing Bank of America Preferred Rewards business customers should consider the Bank of America® Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards Mastercard® credit card. It offers a strong rewards structure and the flexibility to mold that rewards structure to your business needs. However, business owners who are not Bank of America Preferred Rewards members or have more consistent spending habits may prefer a different card.

Bottom line

While the welcome offer isn’t stellar, and you aren’t getting any luxury perks with this card, the Bank of America Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards card allows you to easily earn thousands of dollars in rewards each year without having to pay an annual fee.

There are certainly more lucrative business cards out there, but this is a strong contender for small and medium-sized businesses looking for a customizable credit card to fit spending needs.

This Latin Country Has The 2nd Best Digital Nomad Visa In The World

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

This Latin Country Has The 2nd Best Digital Nomad Visa In The World

According to a recent ranking, Argentina has the second-best digital nomad visa policy worldwide and the best in both North and South America.

Argentina’s digital nomad policy is the second most advantageous in the world for people who want to work abroad, according to the recently released VisaGuide.World Digital Nomad Index. To arrive at these results, the index took into account a number of factors, including living expenses, internet speed, required taxes, minimum income, and health score.

According to VisaGuide.World, the ranking highlights the popularity of Argentina’s Digital Nomad Visa, which was first made available to nomads on May 21, 2022. One reason for this popularity is that the visa allows nomads to live entirely tax-free for the duration of their stay in the nation.

Lum Kamishi, project manager at VisaGuide.World, notes that in the 1.5 years since the government introduced this visa, Argentina has proven its intention to use it by luring nomads with a variety of extremely enticing offers.

“Unlike some other countries, Argentina has taken seriously the capacity that a Digital Nomad Visa can have in boosting the economy. It has no tax policy for the entire stay, and its relatively low minimum income required, extra low living costs, and a high health score compared to other countries in this index, make Argentina extremely alluring and convenient for every Digital Nomad.” said Lum Kamishi, Project Manager at VisaGuide.World

He claims that two more factors that drive up the demand for this visa are Argentina’s popularity among tourists and its fast internet.

While there are Digital Nomad Visas available in four other South American countries, none of them are as desirable as Argentina. These nations are Uruguay, Ecuador, Brazil, and Colombia, in order of ranking.

Spain is another Hispanic nation that holds the top spot. The latter has become the most practical option for digital nomads looking to work overseas. Argentina is ranked number two, followed by Romania, the United Arab Emirates, Croatia, and the United States.

Indonesia Considers Visa-Free Access To Bali For Selectected Countries

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Indonesia Considers Visa-Free Access To Bali For Selectected Countries

The visa-free travel policy for citizens from 159 countries was formally ended by the Indonesian Immigration Department in June this year.

The Ministry replaced it with the visa-on-arrival program, which was nearly identical with the exception of one significant detail. Now, for a maximum of 30 days, visitors from 98 countries must pay IDR 500,000 per person for their visa.

Tourists from neighboring ASEAN states could still enter Indonesia for free for up to 30 days, despite the fact that the policy change eliminated visa-free travel for the majority of Bali’s visitors.

Travelers from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Myanmar, and the Philippines are able to enter and exit ASEAN countries without a visa thanks to a reciprocal agreement.

This week, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economies addressed the media regarding the possibility of restoring visa-free travel for the majority of foreign visitors to the nation.

Bali Aims To Reach This Record-Breaking Number Of Visitors By 2024

Minister Sandiaga Uno has officially stated that he and his teams are suggesting that visitors from twenty countries—as well as the ASEAN countries—be entitled to enter Indonesia without a visa.

“Earlier it was decided to propose which countries would be proposed for visa-free visits. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy proposed 20 countries with the highest number of foreign tourists outside of countries that have visa-free visits,” said Minister Uno.

“At the top are Australia, China, India, South Korea, the United States, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Russia, Taiwan, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, and five other additional countries are countries related to investment contributions and the economic impact on Indonesia, Middle Eastern countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and several other countries,” He continued.

Although the discussion is still ongoing, Minister Uno stated that the proposal will be completed by the end of the following month.

“In the next month it will be finalized and after that, we will receive direction from the president and the policy will be followed up with immigration. We will coordinate with Prof Yasonna and the Director General of Immigration, Mr Silmy,” Minster Uno added.

However, as of right now, travelers from 97 countries—including the 20 countries that Minister Uno mentioned—still have to pay for their visas in person at Bali Airport or online prior to their trip.

It is possible to apply for an e-visa on arrival at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport up to 48 hours prior to arrival.

The visa is applicable for 30 days and is suitable for tourism, certain business-related engagements, and family visits. It is extendable once for an extra 30 days, subject to an additional fee.

Bali is set to implement a new tourism tax on February 14, 2024.

All foreign arrivals must pay the mandatory IDR 150,000 fee, and the money raised by the new tax will be used to address the island’s waste management problems.

Silver Dollar City: Everything you need to know about a Midwest cave turned theme park

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

My first visit to Silver Dollar City was not, in fact, my first visit to Branson, Missouri. I had been to the Ozark town once before, but I spent most of my time staying in a woodsy cabin and exploring the area’s natural beauty. This was many years ago, and I obviously missed the memo that there is so much more to Branson than beautiful mountain views.

Not only is Branson the self-proclaimed “Live Entertainment Capital of the World” with nearly 50 theaters, but also it is home to one of the most surprisingly delightful theme parks I’ve ever visited — Silver Dollar City. The roller coasters are intense, the food is finger-licking good, the people are as friendly as you’d expect (and I say that as a Midwesterner myself), the theming feels natural and authentic, and the park has a fascinating history.

Before you visit what is quickly becoming one of my favorite theme parks, here’s everything you need to know.

Silver Dollar City history

Inside a cave at Silver Dollar City
You can still visit Marvel Cave at Silver Dollar City. SILVER DOLLAR CITY

I wouldn’t usually dedicate this much space to a theme park’s history, but Silver Dollar City — perhaps more than any other theme park — is a direct product of its origins. The attractions, theming and spirit of Silver Dollar City are inextricably tied to the land where the park is built.

That “land” is the site of an 1880s frontier village called Marmaros, with a cave at the entrance, according to “The Story of Silver Dollar City” by Crystal Payton. Marble Cave, as it was then known, was being mined for guano (bat droppings), a popular ingredient in gunpowder. When the guano ran out, the town more or less emptied. William Henry Lynch bought the land and the cave in 1889.

Related: 11 regional theme parks that are closer to home but just as fun as the big names

Lynch’s plans for Marble Cave had nothing to do with bat droppings. His idea was to charge visitors to explore the cave. Lynch hired entertainers and tour guides and, at some point, changed the name to Marvel Cave. After a six-hour tour, the family served meals and offered lodging to visitors. Lynch died in 1927, but his family continued his successful cave tour operation until his children decided to retire in 1950.

The Lynch family turned the cave over to Hugo and Mary Herschend through a 99-year lease. The couple vacationed in the area and loved Marvel Cave. In April 1950, the Herschends and their two sons, Jack and Pete, took over the operations of Marvel Cave. Marvel Cave drew 8,000 visitors that summer, according to the Silver Dollar City website.

The Herschends immediately began making improvements and adding new offerings to draw in even more visitors. In 1954, when the Herschends learned of the area’s history as a frontier town, they decided to re-create the town as a tourist attraction. Thus, the idea for Silver Dollar City was born.

Silver Dollar City opened in 1960; the name was inspired by the Herschend family’s plan to give guests silver dollars as change. The park opened with a blacksmith shop, a general store, an ice cream parlor, a doll shop and two 1880s log structures — a homestead and a church they call Wilderness Church. Employees dressed as Silver Dollar City citizens entertained and interacted with guests.

As time passed, more attractions and artisans were added to the park’s offerings. Fast forward about 60 years, and Silver Dollar City is still owned and operated by Herschend Family Entertainment, with brothers Jack and Pete Herschend at the helm. If the Herschend name sounds familiar, it is because they own and operate parks and attractions all over the country, including Dollywood.

Nowadays, Silver Dollar City honors the area’s history and pioneering spirit while doing what it has done for more than a century: entertaining and thrilling guests from all over the world.

You can still step inside the McAffie’s Homestead, and services are held inside the Wilderness Church every Sunday.

Employees are referred to as “citizens,” and each of the park’s 11 “districts” reflects its surroundings. Midtown is essentially the town square where you’ll find many shops and artisans. Rivertown is home to the park’s water rides, and The Grand Exposition is fashioned after a World’s Fair.

The park employs dozens of artisans who both demonstrate their talents for visitors and make their wares available for purchase. You can see everything from coffee mugs to candy to bed frames being built; you can even take them home with you if you wish.

As for the cave that started it all? You can still tour Marvel Cave daily. Tours take about an hour (rather than the six it would have taken a century ago), and a cable train will bring you back to street level. It’s just one of the many things that make Silver Dollar City special.

Silver Dollar City tickets

Silver Dollar City offers one-, two- and three-day tickets. Pricing starts at $89 for a one-day ticket, $109 for two days and $119 for three. Kids ages 4-11 and adults ages 65 and up can save $10 per ticket. Kids ages 3 and under are free.

If you plan to visit more than three days a year, you can save with a season pass. Pricing starts at $149 for unlimited visits to Silver Dollar City during the operating season, plus discounts and other perks.

Preschoolers can get a free annual pass through Silver Dollar City’s Adventure Pass program.

Silver Dollar City rides and attractions

Roller coaster
Time Traveler Coaster at Silver Dollar City. SILVER DOLLAR CITY

I visited Silver Dollar City with my husband and three kids, and I can say with certainty that there is something for everyone. My husband and our 10-year-old loved the high-flying coasters, like the 68-mile-per-hour Outlaw Run. They also loved PowderKeg, which launches from 0 to 53 miles per hour in less than three seconds. It is named for the powder mills where bat guano from Marvel Cave once was turned into gunpowder.

Kids on ride

My younger sons loved The Fire District. This area has kid-friendly rides with a low minimum height requirement (most are 36 inches). Most of the rides in this area don’t require a parent to ride with a child, and it was fun getting to sit back and watch them.

Kids playing

There are also multiple indoor play areas in The Fire District. This includes a massive FireHouse Play Place where kids can practice their fire-fighting skills with foam balls that look like water droplets.

Fire in the Hole concept art. SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Come spring 2024, The Fire District will also be home to the all-new Fire in the Hole, a family-friendly indoor roller coaster. The original Fire in the Hole opened at Silver Dollar City in 1972. The ride told the (fictional) story of the day a group of vigilantes called the Baldknobbers tried to set fire to the real-life town of Marmaros that once stood where the theme park is now. The town banded together to battle the fire and save the town.

The new Fire in the Hole will likely tell a similar story but with an updated ride system and experience. It will be the park’s biggest investment in a single attraction when it opens this spring.

The Flooded Mine ride at Silver Dollar City. TARAH CHIEFFI/THE POINTS GUY

I’m always a sucker for the quirky attractions that make a park stand out from its competitors, and Silver Dollar City has plenty that fit that bill.

The Flooded Mine is a slow-moving boat ride where you shoot at interactive targets along the way. The best part of the ride is the nonsensical scoring system that somehow gave my five-year-old tens of thousands of more points than I earned.

The High-Low Silos at Silver Dollar City

I also loved working to pull myself to the top of The High-Low Silos, and seeing the park and surrounding area on the Frisco Silver Dollar Line Steam Train. Grandfather’s Mansion was another of my favorites. Each room has special effects like slanted floors and mirrored walls that made me feel like a kid again.

Things to know before visiting Silver Dollar City

The artisans and entertainers are their own attraction

woman making pottery

mugs hanging on a wall

I’ve already mentioned the artisans at Silver Dollar City, but it bears repeating that this is one of the things that makes the park so unique. We could pop into their shops, watch them at work and see the finished product. When my kids had questions for them, they were more than happy to impart their wisdom.

Dancers on stage
Silver Dollar Saloon. TARAH CHIEFFI/THE POINTS GUY

Seeing the Frontier Follies at the Silver Dollar Saloon was another highlight. Their singing and dancing were bolstered by their slapstick comedy, which kept my whole family entertained.

There’s also a water park

Silver Dollar City has an adjacent water park called White Water. The water park opens in late May and closes in early September. Tickets start at just $49 per person, with a discount for guests ages 4-11 or those 65 and older.

Visit during the park’s special events

Silver Dollar City hosts special events throughout the year, like a Bluegrass & BBQ Festival, a Halloween-time Harvest Festival and An Old Time Christmas.

Related: Not your average sleigh ride: 9 can’t-miss theme parks during the holidays

My family visited during what they call “An Old Time Christmas,” and the transformation was magical. The park was illuminated with more than 6.5 million lights, and there were stage productions of classic holiday stories like Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” There was also an eight-story-tall Christmas tree with dancing lights synchronized to music, a nightly parade, and specialty food and drink items.

Parking is free

I was shocked when I found out parking is free at Silver Dollar City, mostly because that is hard to come by at a theme park these days. You can pay a fee for preferred parking if you want a shorter walk, but it’s unnecessary. No matter where you park, you can access a tram or shuttle bus that will drop you off at the front gates.

You can use parent swap for rides

If you have kids who are too young (or too scared) for roller coasters, you can tell the greeter at the ride entrance that you want to use rider swap. One parent can wait with the child(ren) while the other rides; then, you can “swap,” so the other parent can ride.

Use TrailBlazer to skip the lines

TrailBlazer is Silver Dollar City’s version of a skip-the-line pass. You can purchase this as an add-on when you buy your tickets online or at the gate. Pricing starts at $49 per day for use at eight select rides in a day or $79 for unlimited uses. With TrailBlazer, you enter through a separate queue for a shorter wait on some of the park’s most popular attractions.

Download the Silver Dollar City app for ride times and more

Silver Dollar City has an official app to see wait times, get directions around the park, see show schedules and more. You will want to download the app before your visit so you can use it while you are in the park.

There are some foods you can only get at Silver Dollar City

Woman holding cinnamon bread
Silver Dollar City cinnamon bread. SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Silver Dollar City doesn’t skimp when it comes to its food offerings, and there are a few must-try dishes. One of these you will be able to smell from a mile away — Clara Belle’s Cinnamon Bread. This is the quintessential Silver Dollar City treat, and getting Starbucks coffee at Clara Belle’s is almost as sweet as the icing on top of the world-famous bread.

Related: 13 absolute best things to eat that you can only get in US theme parks

Silver Dollar City also has a homemade candy shop called Brown’s Candy Factory. They are probably best known for their fudge and peanut brittle (the latter has a highly guarded secret recipe), but they also make various flavored clusters and other confections. You can view daily candy-making demonstrations while you ponder which treats to purchase.

There are also a couple of spots where you can get tasty meals cooked in giant cast iron skillets. Buckshot’s Skillet Cookery serves a Family Feud Succotash skillet — a play on the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys.

Hotels near Silver Dollar City

Hotel exterior
Chateau on the Lake in Branson, Missouri. TARAH CHIEFFI/THE POINTS GUY

Silver Dollar City has no on-site hotels, but there is a campground that offers tent camping, RV sites and log cabins. If you stay at the campground, you can use the park’s complimentary shuttle service to get back and forth. There are plenty of nearby hotels, as well. Here are a few of my favorites:

Chateau on the Lake Resort, Spa and Convention Center: This lakeside property is farther from town, but the silver lining is the peace and quiet you get from being removed from the busier part of Branson.Big Cedar Lodge: Owned and operated by the founder of Bass Pro Shops, Big Cedar Lodge has various accommodation types and outdoor activities. The Ozarker Lodge: This modern motor lodge offers a boutique hotel experience less than 15 minutes from Silver Dollar City.Hilton Promenade at Branson Landing: This property is adjacent to Branson’s popular shopping and dining complex. Some rooms have a view of the daily fountain shows at Branson Landing.

Bottom line

I can have fun anywhere, especially at a theme park, so I knew I would have a good time at Silver Dollar City. However, I didn’t expect to be so thoroughly impressed by the authenticity, storytelling and history of the park — not to mention the thrilling rides and friendly “citizens.” Knowing what I know now, I’ll never make the mistake of going to Branson and skipping Silver Dollar City again.
