Holland America’s Mariner Society loyalty program: Everything you need to know

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Among major cruise lines, Holland America has one of the most intriguing loyalty programs.

Like most cruise line loyalty programs, Holland America’s Mariner Society, as it’s called, lets you earn points and build up status by spending days at sea on its ships. However, it also lets you earn points and build up status by spending money on board its vessels.

That latter piece of the program is unusual in the cruise space, and it means that — if you’re a big onboard spender — you can reach high-level tiers of the program relatively quickly.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

Holland America’s loyalty program also offers a lot of great perks to higher-tier members. These include big discounts on specialty dining charges and drinks-related charges, as well as free passage for children sailing with you on select sailings.

In This Post

Ways to earn points

The Mariner Society point-earning system is relatively simple. In most cases, you will earn one “cruise day” credit for every night you’re on a ship.

The only exception is for passengers staying in top accommodations. Customers staying in a suite or penthouse on a Holland America ship will get double cruise day credits. One caveat here is that you must have paid the normal fare for the suite or penthouse to get the double credits.

You won’t get double credit if you’re staying in a suite or penthouse due to a complimentary cabin upgrade.

Note that you will get cruise day credits not just for nights that you spend on Holland America ships, but also for days you spend touring on land when on Holland America Cruisetours in Alaska. Holland America Cruisetours in Alaska typically combine a seven-night Alaska cruise with a few days touring the state by land in motorcoaches or by train.

Related: The 4 classes of Holland America ships, explained

In addition, as noted above, there is an unusual bonus way to earn Mariner Society cruise day credits. You can earn one additional cruise day credit for every $300 you spend onboard a ship for such things as shore excursions and shop purchases (with a limit of one extra cruise day credit for every day you sail).

The extra credit is calculated based on the combined folio charges for all passengers on a single booking, regardless of who signs each charge and who pays the bill. Only the first two passengers on a booking will receive the bonus credit.

Some purchases — future cruise deposits, cash advances and casino charges — are excluded from the onboard purchase bonus. But all other onboard purchases count — even the hotel service charges, beverage service charges and taxes that show up on final bills.

Program tiers and benefits

There are five tiers to the Mariner Society loyalty program:

Star Mariner (after one cruise).2-Star Mariner (30 to 74 cruise day credits).3-Star Mariner (75 to 199 cruise day credits).4-Star Mariner (200 to 499 cruise day credits).5-Star Mariner (500-plus cruise day credits).

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the first tier of the Mariner Society loyalty program (Star Mariner) doesn’t come with all that many valuable perks.

Star Mariners receive:

Up to $400 per cabin onboard spending credit when booking a cruise within 90 days of a new season launch .15% discount at shophollandamerica.com.A special welcome lunch. An onboard gift.A voucher for an onboard cocktail.50% off cruise fares for kids and extra guests in your cabin on select sailings.

In addition to all the above, the big add-on for 2-Star Mariners is discounts on Holland America-branded items. Loyal Holland America cruisers at the 2-Star level will get a 10% discount on select Holland America clothing sold on ships. They also receive a complimentary photo of their ship.

The 3-Star Mariner level adds a perk that we really love: A 25% discount on specialty restaurant surcharges and on specialty coffees in various venues, Sommelier Suites packages and all mini-bar purchases. This amounts to real money savings in your pocket.

The 3-Star Mariner level also brings discounts on select treatments from shipboard Greenhouse Spa & Salon venues.

Moving up through these first three tiers is relatively easy. As noted, reaching the initial Star Mariner tier requires completing just one cruise. Depending on how much money you spend on the ship your first few sailings (which will affect your bonus-credit haul), and whether you stay in a suite or not, you could reach the 2-Star Mariner level after just two to four seven-night cruises.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Holland America ship

Hitting the 3-Star Mariner level might take five to nine seven-night cruises, depending on your onboard spend and the type of cabins you book. However, if you sign up for one or two of Holland America’s longer voyages, you could reach 3-Star level far sooner.

The elite level that makes a difference

The sweet spot in Holland America’s program is the 4-Star Mariner status level. This is where you really start to see some great perks, including:

Complimentary cruise fare for kids and extra guests staying in your cabin on select sailings.A 50% discount on specialty restaurant surcharges and specialty coffees in dining venues, Sommelier Suites packages and all mini-bar purchases.Complimentary laundry and pressing services.Priority access to ship-to-shore tenders.Priority check-in.A complimentary James Suckling regional wine tasting.A 15% discount on select Holland America Line logo clothing sold in onboard shops (may exclude already discounted merchandise).A 25% discount off the $49-per-person surcharge in Rudi’s Sel De Mer eatery.

We love that Holland America will let kids sail free on select sailings at this tier. The line isn’t necessarily known as a family line. However, if you have kids and you’re a Holland America fan, this could save you a lot of money.

You’ll also save a lot of money with the 50%-off specialty restaurant perk at this level and the other 50%-off discount options.

Related: The best credit cards for booking cruises

We’re also thrilled about the complimentary laundry and pressing services at this tier level. A number of other lines offer complimentary laundry services as a loyalty plan perk, but often not until their top tier.

Reaching the 4-Star Mariner level may seem daunting, as it requires 200 cruise day credits. Keep in mind, however, that you’ll be earning credits for onboard spending, plus double credits if you stay in a suite. If you max out all the possibilities, you could reach the 4-Star Mariner level in just 10 seven-night cruises. If you take a few longer voyages, you could be sipping wine at a complimentary wine tasting on every voyage even sooner.

Best elite perk

If you cruise with family or friends, we think the best perk in Holland America’s program is the complimentary cruise fare for kids and extra guests staying in your cabin on select sailings. As noted above, this is a 4-Star Mariner perk that also carries over to 5-Star Mariners.

We should note that all Mariner Society members get discounts of some sort for the third- and fourth- passengers staying in their cabins. During the booking process, type in your Mariner ID to view your discount for this.

Note that at the 5-Star Mariner level, loyal fans of the line also get:

Up to a $30 credit toward an internet package. Two complimentary dinners in one of the following onboard restaurants: Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind or Canaletto (free surcharge only).A complimentary day pass to the Greenhouse Spa & Salon (one per cruise).

Note that, as is often the case with cruise line loyalty programs, Holland America customers do not have to requalify for status each year. Mariner Society members keep their points at the end of each year and continue to accrue points indefinitely. That means that someone who hits 5-Star Mariner status will remain at that top tier level forever (or until Holland America makes a change to the program).

Related: Our favorite steakhouses at sea include a Holland America venue

Such “forever status” is one of the great allures of cruise line frequent cruiser programs. Most airline frequent flyer programs, by contrast, require loyalty members to requalify for status each year.

Mariner Society lapel pins

Holland America has awarded its most loyal guests special lapel pin “medallions” in the past and continues that practice today. Sail 100 days and get a Bronze Medallion. Cruisers with 300 days at sea get a Silver Medallion and those with 500 days earn a Gold Medallion. The Platinum Medallion is reserved for cruisers who have enjoyed 700 or more nights at sea. For pin tiers, cruise days are the only thing that counts.

Bottom line

Holland America has a very solid loyalty program. Unlike Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line, it doesn’t offer its loyalty club members a free cruise after reaching the top tier of the program. Nor does it offer its members across-the-board discounts on shore excursions and beverage packages, such as Windstar Cruises does. However, some of its perks at higher levels offer a lot of value. We are particularly fond of the 50% discounts on specialty restaurant charges and some other drinks-related charges that comes  4-Star and 5-Star Mariner status.

Turks And Caicos To Lift Pre-Departure Testing And Proof Of Health Insurance

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

Turks And Caicos To Lift Pre-Departure Testing And Proof Of Health Insurance

As of May 1, the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board will no longer require pre-departure Covid19 testing for fully vaccinated travelers.

The move also implies that travelers will no longer be not compelled to present proof of health insurance or fill out a form on the TCI Assured Portal either.

From this day forward, travelers 18 years of age or older will only be required to present proof of vaccination (printed card or electronic) at the airport, both upon departure and arrival in the Turks and Caicos Islands. No other documents are required.

“We are delighted to make it easier for travelers to rediscover Turks and Caicos. Throughout 2021 and the first quarter of 2022, we saw strong visitor numbers from our largest source market, the United States and we believe the measures announced today will boost numbers further in 2022,” said Pamela Ewing, the director of tourism for the islands.

The easing of restrictions is a major step forward thanks to the ongoing vaccination campaign and security measures in Turks and Caicos.

Turks and Caicos

More than 80% of the adult population has been fully vaccinated to date. furthermore, a fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine is currently being distributed to residents throughout the country, with priority given to the elderly and immunocompromised.

In its most recent assessment, the CDC designated the Turks and Caicos Islands as a “Level 2” travel destination, indicating a “moderate” level of COVID -19 transmission in the community. At the same time, it recommends US visitors to have their coronavirus vaccinations up to date before visiting the islands.

While masks are no longer necessary indoors, wearing a KN95 or N95 mask is still recommended for self-protection and to protect others from pre- and asymptomatic Covid.

The islands have now joined a list of Caribbean destinations that have eased entry restrictions. These include St. Lucia, which has removed all pre-entry testing for vaccinated travelers, and Aruba and Grenada, which have removed all COVID -19-related entry restrictions.

Tips for getting through the airport quickly — and easily — with kids

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

When I think of depressingly long lines, several major U.S. airports are top of my travel list: those in Orlando, Las Vegas and Newark, New Jersey. I’ve seen lines there that can suck the magic out of your family’s travel day in a hurry.

While some things about air travel – like delays and cancellations – are out of your control, there are many things you can do to avoid travel-day headaches when flying with kids.

Here are my tips to get through busy airports as quickly as possible when the family is along for the ride.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.

In This Post

Get PreCheck and Clear (and maybe Global Entry)

Clear kiosks at the airport
(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

First and foremost, if you don’t already have TSA PreCheck, please do yourself a favor and rectify that as soon as possible.

Getting through security gets so much easier when everyone in your family has access to PreCheck. The time it takes to secure five years of PreCheck will be worth it the second you see a long TSA security line that you can skip for the (usually) shorter and faster PreCheck line. Your kids can piggyback with you through PreCheck until they turn 13 years old, at which point they must have their own PreCheck approval.

Once you are approved for TSA PreCheck and have your Trusted Traveler number in hand, enter it with your other reservation information so you can get the invaluable PreCheck designation on your boarding pass.

If you are planning some international travel, you may want to opt for Global Entry over TSA PreCheck to expedite your time spent in immigration and customs upon re-entry to the U.S.

Every person in your family, regardless of age, will need to sign up for Global Entry (and pay the $100 application fee) to use the benefits. It’s money well spent as Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck, so you’ll reap the benefits of both programs.

Speaking of security and children, make sure you prepare your kids to answer a few questions such as their names, age and relationship to the adults in the traveling party.

(Photo by Zach Honig/The Points Guy)

Related: Top credit cards for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck

And then there is Clear, an expedited identity verification program that uses biometrics to get you through the airport even faster.

With Clear, children under 18 who are traveling with a Clear member can go through the Clear lane without needing to sign up for an account. If you are traveling with family members over 18, you can add them to your Clear account for a discounted annual rate (up to three family members total).

Related: 7 ways to get free or discounted TSA PreCheck, Global Entry and Clear

A very large number of rewards credit cards will reimburse your $85-$100 TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fees. Some examples of eligible cards include Chase Sapphire Reserve, The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

The Platinum Card from American Express, The Business Platinum Card from American Express and The Centurion Card from American Express offer reimbursement for the $179 annual Clear membership.

Don’t check bags

Flying with just carry-on bags will spare you potentially long lines to check your bag and avoids any lengthy wait at baggage claim when you land. The line to check a bag with some airlines, such as Southwest and Spirit, can be as long as 90 minutes at Orlando Airport on the busiest days.

That is not something you want to deal with before starting a long travel day home.

The bag check line in Orlando on a busy day in April 2021. (Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

It’s easier than you might think to be “Team Carry-On” when traveling with kids.

First, strollers, car seats and booster seats do not count against your carry-on baggage allotment on most airlines. Also remember that if you are traveling as a family of four, you can bring a carry-on for each person (even if they aren’t old enough to carry it themselves just yet).

I know it’s not always realistic to pack everything you need in carry-on bags, especially when traveling with multiple young children, but if you can pull it off, you will be glad you did.

If you have to check a bag, use automated kiosks or curbside check-in

If you absolutely must check a bag — and I get it, we’ve been there — check to see if your airport and airline has automated bag tag kiosks, as those lines can be much, much shorter.

Since checked bags are free with Southwest, that airline often has the longest bag check lines. Here is a list of Southwest airports that now have the self-tagging kiosks.

Another option we use frequently when we must check bags, especially during peak travel times, is to use the skycap service at curbside check-in. If you get dropped off at the curb, you can use curbside check-in and the skycap (it’s customary to tip them) will make sure you don’t have to deal with your bags for one extra step.

Not only that, but the lines for curbside check-in can be much lower than inside the airport. Again, the expectation here is that you will tip a few dollars, but that will likely be money very well spent.

Bring a travel-friendly stroller

You don’t want to be that parent holding up the security line because you can’t figure out how to fold your stroller and maneuver it through the X-ray machine. Depending on your child’s age and your destination, leaving the stroller behind may be out of the question, but some strollers are more travel friendly than others.

Travel-friendly strollers should be lightweight and easy to fold. Before heading to the airport, make sure you know how to fold it up securely and fit it through the security scanner.

Remember you’ll need to take all of your belongings (including your child) out of the stroller when it’s time to go through security.

Know your lounge access

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

Once you make it through airport check-in and security, hopefully the worst is behind you. But overly crowded gate areas are rarely pleasant with a family. Many of the same rewards credit cards that will cover the cost of your Global Entry or PreCheck application fees will also get you into a variety of airport lounges around the world.

The American Express Centurion lounges are among my favorite domestic lounges, especially when they have family rooms. Many rewards credit cards provide access to the Priority Pass Select network of lounges. The Capital One Lounge network, while still small, is another excellent option when you are at an eligible location.

The number of guests you are permitted for no additional charge with Priority Pass Select membership varies based on which rewards credit card is tied to the membership — with the Chase Sapphire Reserve, the number of guests is unlimited. This means your whole family can take a break from the busy terminal and enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks without waiting in a long Starbucks line.

You can use the LoungeBuddy site to check which lounges are available in the airports you are transiting, or head straight to the Priority Pass Select site if you will be using that membership to escape the crowds. It not only provides access to airport lounges around the world, but has a growing number of airport restaurants you can eat at using your membership.

Related: Here’s what to do if your flight is canceled or delayed

If your flight is delayed or canceled, an agent in the lounge can typically help you get rebooked instead of you standing in a long line in the terminal. If you don’t have lounge access, purchasing a lounge day pass has saved the day for TPG reporter Sean Cudahy.

Be prepared to keep kids busy

A play area at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). (Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

Sometimes, even the best-laid plans go sideways. These tips are meant to get you through the airport quickly, but if you find yourself stuck due to cancellations or delays, you’ll need some tricks to pass the time.

Some airports have indoor play areas where your kids can let off steam before having to sit still for a flight.

These play areas are great ways to pass the time in the airport when you have younger kids. It doesn’t take much to make a toddler, preschooler, or even younger elementary kid happy in an airport as long as there is something to do.

If you are in an airport without a play area, pack a few card games, art supplies or toys (or all three). If you are lucky, you won’t even need them.

Bottom line

There’s no way around the fact that everything takes just a little bit longer when kids are involved, including getting through the airport.

Luckily, there are things you can do to speed up the process and get to your destination or back home as quickly and painlessly as possible.

It is one of the best countries to vacation, backpack, or drive around, depending on what you prefer. So, if you are looking to travel to Mexico, you are in the right place. Here are the family-friendly best things to do in Mexico with kids and on a budget.

How To Save Money

With so much to see and do, Mexico can get expensive. That is why you can implement a few tips to save your money and make the most out of your budget. It will help you explore more things.

Here are some of the top tips you can apply:

Indulge in street food: Mexican street food is the best in the world, and it is one of the best ways to understand the local cuisine while saving moneyTravel during the off-season: Traveling between May and early December is the best time as the rates are lowCommute through public transportation: The most affordable way to get around in Mexico is through The Metro, which is why you must skip taxis Take free walking tours: There are free walking tours in many cities. You can take one of those to explore the cities, but be sure to tip your guidesMove away from the coast: While the coasts are highly famous, you must venture inland for better pricing and less crowd

These are the top five tips you can apply to visit Mexico on a budget and make the most of your money. You can also find cheap accommodation options by finding people to host you or Couch surfing. All of this will help you travel to Mexico in the most affordable way.

Top Things to Do in Mexico

Mexico is a country that fuses together energetic cities, relaxing beaches, and unforgiving desserts; which ultimately harness a rich history of Mayan, Aztec, and indigenous civilizations. Visiting Mexico can guarantee an activity-filled holiday, in its attractions, cuisine, and simple exploration, even when seen on a budget.

If you can survive without some of the more lavish modes of luxury travel, it may mean you can see more of this exotic and diverse country, without having to spend a fortune. So here are a few things to do in Mexico to get started:

The Mayan Metropolis: Chichen Itza

One of the most visited archeological sites in Mexico is the famous landmarks like the Mayan City. When visiting the Mayan Metropolis, El Castillo must not be forgotten to be visited as it is known as the Pyramid of Kukulkan, the tallest structure on the site. The 1,000 years old observatory, Caracol is proof that the Mayans were much advanced then. In addition to these stopovers, numerous statues, structures, and temples add to the attraction of tourists.

Riviera Maya

The coastline along the Gulf of Mexico is famous for its destinations like restaurants, Playa del Carmen, the island of Cozumel, and the beaches. These places along the Gulf are famously known as the Riviera Maya. Over 5 million tourists are attracted annually to these beaches and the plethora of mesmerizing crystal-clear waters. Some important ‘To Do’ things here include swim with the dolphins and stingrays, snorkeling in the shallow reefs along with the tropical fish, scuba diving to the world’s largest underwater museum filled with sculptures at depths up to 8 meters, and visiting the Mayan Ruins nearby.

Puerto Vallarta

The Pacific Coastal city of Puerto Vallarta is considered a playground for the social elite of North Americans. The sunny and warmer climate of the city attracts a huge number of tourists for sunbath as well selecting the city as their second home. Old Cruise Ship rides, dolphin swims, and water sports like parasailing and jet skiing have become famous tourist activities.

Mexico’s Grand Canyon

The spectacular Copper Canyon is the most visited natural site located in Chihuahua. This Mexico’s Grand Canyon is factually much larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. The state offers rail trips, bike rides as well horseback rides in the area.

Guanajuato

As a foot explorer, Guanajuato is the best city for you to visit and to walk through winding and twisting narrow streets. The city’s main square Jardin de la Union, San Diego Church, and the majestic Juarez Theater can be explored on foot. The city is home to many galleries, museums, and cultural festivals.

The Ancient Fortress of Tulum

It is one of the most visited places in the Yucatan Peninsula due to the presence of well-preserved ruins of the town of Tulum, looking like a high-walled fortress, and easy access from the beaches of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel. The city dates back to the 13th century AD.

Tour The Markets

Mexico has one of the most diverse and busiest market scenes you will find. Touring the markets is one of the best ways to indulge in local food, get souvenirs, bargain for items, and find the best-hidden gems. The best way to find the markets is to talk to the locals or your tour guide.

They will let you know what markets you can find in your area and where you can wander. Once you do, you can spend the entire day in a market and not get bored. The traditional food is something you must not miss while you are in the markets.

Relax On The Beaches In Cancun

If you don’t visit one of the beaches in Mexico, you are not doing your trip right. Cancun is one of the best places to visit, where you will find beautiful beaches, relaxing spas, luxurious resorts, and much more. You can also visit the nearby villages and look at unique archaeological sites and the Mayan ruins. But there are many things to know before going to Cancun.

Cancun is a great place for people who love to party and for those who love to explore. There is always something or the other going on for the party people. However, for people who love to explore, they can venture into the local restaurant and market scene.

Take In Nature At The UNAM Botanical Garden

Are you tired of the fast life and need to get away from it for some downtime? If you do, you must visit the beautiful botanical garden at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The gardens there have a decorative and medicinal purpose, and it also emphasizes environmental education and conservation.

The garden is free for everyone, as you don’t need a ticket to enter. You will also find the most diverse cactus collection here, along with waterfalls, ponds, grottoes, and much more. If you love nature, the botanical garden must be on the top of your list.

Stroll Around In Chapultepec Park

Chapultepec Park is one of the biggest parks in the world. The park spans more than seven hundred hectares and is a beauty to witness. Here, you will find the Museum of Anthropology, La Feria amusement park, and the zoo.

If you want to make the most of your visit here, you can rent a paddleboat or rowboat to go into Chapultepec Lake. It is one of the best things to do if you are in the park with your significant other. You can stroll in the park, paddle on the lake, and watch a beautiful sunset from anywhere in the park.

Spend Some Time In Guadalajara

The second-largest city in Mexico is Guadalajara, and it is known for the mariachi and the best tequila. You will find everything in this city, from old colonial streets to modern nightlife venues that will energize you in no time. The best place to visit in Guadalajara is Cabanas, which is a unique UNESCO building that includes brilliant murals.

If you love architecture, history, and art, you will fall in love with Guadalajara in no time. There are endless museums you can visit. Besides that, you must visit the Guadalajara Cathedral to see the best gothic artwork from Murillo.

Witness The Aztec Pyramids At Teotihuacan

When in Mexico, you must not miss the mark of the Aztec empire. In Teotihuacan, you will find the Temple of the Moon, the Sun, and the Feathered Serpent. There is no shelter here, so be sure to get sunscreen and a hat.

The pyramids will inspire you and take your breath away. You can see the remains of the Aztec empire and dive into the past of this beautiful country.

Photograph the Historical Center of Mexico City

The capital city of Mexico is full of things to do, galleries, museums, and many popular travel destinations. Over 1,400 historical colonial buildings are present in the 15 square kilometer UNESCO World Heritage Site area. Other worth seeing places include the Constitution Square, National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Templo Mayor, over 5000 meters high Popocatepetl, and Iztaccihuatl volcanic mountains.

The main public plaza in Mexico City is known as Zocalo, which houses a rich history in its surrounding museums, cathedral, churches and most importantly, in its people. Walk amongst the street sellers, artists, musicians, outside the restaurants and cafes, photographing the spectacular presence of the Mexican culture, all for free.

Snorkel and Discover Mayan Ruins in Playa Del Carmen

Water activities needn’t be expensive. Don’t spend your savings on expensive scuba outings and travel down to Solomon Bay to discover the sea life underwater, for free instead. Grab your snorkels and head down to the sea for exploration in shallow waters; you’ll be surprised with what you find. Afterward, visit Playa Del Carmen and walk along with one of the many free beaches, whilst mingling with celebrities and locals alike. Then head towards the Playa Car Mayan Ruins, which are also free to walk around every day of the week. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the history of Mexico.

Glimpse Mexican Art and Artists Homes

The Dolores Olmedo museum houses a collection of pieces gathered by the businesswoman, including those from the artists Frieda Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera. For a mere £3 entry you can browse folk and contemporary art in Mexico’s City center. Alternatively, you can visit the home of Frieda Kahlo in the outskirts of Mexico City in Coyoacan. The house is a magnificent feat, displaying bright blue cobalt walls, which symbolize the strength of Frieda Kahlo’s feministic folk art and strong intellect. It is the most visited museum in Mexico City and has an entry fee of £5.

Visit Free and Inexpensive Museums in Mexico City

The Museo Palacio Cultural Banamex is a notable palace, built in the 18th century in a traditional baroque style, and it is just around the corner from the Zacola plaza in Mexico City. The building was originally built as a palace; however, it was also used as a convent during the 1600’s. Alternatively, the Franz Mayer museum houses the largest collection of Latin American arts from the 1500’s to the 1900’s, also displaying ceramics and silver. Entry to the Museo Palacio Cultural Banamex is only £1.70.

Conclusion

When you visit Mexico, you can comfortably take part in any of the above activities, without the need to stretch your wallet. Free and cheap exploration can most definitely be found if you are willing to research your destination and keep an eye out for last minute offers.

I am Jimmy, I left my career in the military to become a full-time traveler, documenting my memories along the way. Kicked off traveling in September 2017 with $4000 in my savings account and first started publishing my journey. Winc: Ordering wine is helping me earn airline elite status, but is it worth it?

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

There are more ways than ever to earn American Airlines elite status now with the introduction of Loyalty Points.

You can earn elite qualifying Loyalty Points on a wide range of everyday activities, including dining out, ordering flowers, staying at hotels and filling up your tank. But arguably one of the most lucrative methods is through the AAdvantage eShopping online shopping portal.

American’s shopping portal lets you earn bonus redeemable miles and Loyalty Points at hundreds of online retailers simply by starting at the portal and clicking through to the merchant’s website. Most retailers generally offer 1 to 5 bonus miles per dollar spent through the portal.

However, we often see outsized earnings offered by wine subscription services — sometimes 50 miles (or more) per dollar. These services typically participate in American’s SimplyMiles program, too, allowing you to double dip on your earnings.

Among these wine clubs is Winc. At the time of writing, the company is offering 1,500 miles for your first order through the shopping portal and 1,000 miles by activating the offer through SimplyMiles. That’s a sizable return given the service’s low price tag.

But is it actually worth it? How is the quality of the wine, and how difficult is it to cancel your subscription? Here’s what I learned after testing the service out.

Get the latest points, miles and travel news by signing up for TPG’s free daily newsletter.

In This Post

Cost

New members who sign up for Winc can currently get four bottles of wine for $29.95, including shipping but not tax. So, each bottle came out to around $8, which seemed like a good enough deal even before factoring in the miles.

Just note that after your first month, your subscription will automatically renew for $59.95 per month. However, there’s no long-term commitment, so you can cancel whenever you’d like (more on that later).

Value

As discussed, I earned 2,500 AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points on my order: 1,500 miles for placing my order through the eShopping portal and another 1,000 miles for activating a Winc offer through SimplyMiles and paying with a Mastercard.

Winc AA shopping portal
(Screenshot from aadvantageeshopping.com)

Considering the box cost about $30, I got a return of more than 80 miles per dollar spent, which is phenomenal and sure beats the return you get from flying.

Normally, you only earn between 5 and 11 miles per dollar spent on flights with American, depending on your status. In other words, as a general AAdvantage member, I would have needed to spend at least $500 on airfare (before factoring in taxes) in order to earn the same amount of miles.

Winc AA SimplyMiles
(Screenshot from simplymiles.com)

TPG values American Airlines miles at 1.77 cents each, so I effectively got $44 back in rewards and made a net gain of about $14. Alternatively, you could look at it as me buying American miles for a modest 1.2 cents apiece.

But that was just the cherry on top. The real reason I placed this order, after all, was to quickly earn Loyalty Points toward American elite status.

Let’s also not forget that I still got four bottles of wine. Each bottle retailed for $10 to $20, so I got good value there, too.

Testing the wine

Before even signing up for Winc, I was prompted to complete a short ″Palate Profile″ quiz so that the algorithm could attempt to learn my tastes. The questions ranged from what kinds of flavors I like to whether I’d rather eat Skittles or M&Ms — or both at the same time.

I was then matched with two red and two white wines with flavors of white peach and strawberry.

(Screenshot from winc.com)

However, they didn’t all jump out to me, so I decided to customize my box and swap out three of the four wines. I ended up ordering the following:

Far & Wide‌ Grenache, 2020‌ (recommended by the algorithm). If a Tree Falls Pinot Grigio, 2020.Lost Poet Red Blend, 2019.Summer Water Rosé, 2020.

Winc exclusively sells its own wines, so you’ll never see any big brand names. If you want to reorder any of the wines, you’d generally have to do so through Winc, though some brands may be available at local retailers.

Related: Drizly vs. Uber Eats: We put alcohol deliveries to the test

There was no way I could finish four bottles of wine alone, so I enlisted the help of a few friends to sample them with me. None of us are wine experts, but overall, the wines were better than expected. We wouldn’t go out of our way to buy them again, but none were particularly bad, and we still finished all the bottles.

Everyone’s favorite was the Summer Water Rosé. This is definitely one of Winc’s best-known wines and one that you might find in a local liquor store. It was refreshing and fruity, with notes of strawberry, grapefruit and watermelon. A friend said, “It lives up to its name — it’s perfect for a hot summer day.” It’s also quite popular on Vivino, with a 3.9 average rating.

(Photo by Benji Stawski/The Points Guy)

I also enjoyed the Far & Wide Grenache. It was well balanced with flavors of dark fruits and spice. Although Winc bottles all wine in California, it sources grapes from around the globe. In this case, they were from the Western Cape of South Africa.

(Photo by Benji Stawski/The Points Guy)

The Lost Poet Red Blend was palatable, too, though it was definitely on the oakier side. Meanwhile, we thought the If a Tree Falls Pinot Grigio would’ve been better off used for cooking. However, it seems popular on Vivino, with a 4.0 average rating.

Ease of use

From the ″Palate Profile″ quiz to canceling my membership, Winc’s platform was very straightforward and easy to use. The questionnaire was fun to complete, and I appreciated the option to customize the bottles in my box.

Winc flavor quiz
(Screenshot from winc.com)

One of the most important things for me when signing up for a recurring service like Winc is how easy it is to cancel. And luckily, it was in this case. Although there was no cancel button online, I was able to easily cancel my membership via text message. Alternatively, I could have called in or chatted with an agent online. My membership was canceled without hesitation, and there was no cancellation fee.

Unfortunately, Winc cannot ship to Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Utah. There are also some wines that can’t be shipped to Michigan.

Bottom line

Buying a box of Winc wine through the AAdvantage eShopping online shopping portal proved to be a phenomenal deal. For about $30, I earned the same amount of elite qualifying Loyalty Points I’d normally earn on a flight costing more than $500, plus about $44 worth of redeemable miles. Although I really only placed this order for the rewards, the wines themselves were better than expected and definitely drinkable.

You only earn miles on new subscriptions, so you can’t get this outsized return month after month. However, the subscription is easy to cancel, and there are other wine clubs on the portal that you can earn miles with.

10 Highlights of the Trans-Siberian Railway

TODAY'S ADVENTURE

10 Highlights of the Trans-Siberian Railway

If you’re lucky enough to take Trans-Siberian tours via a railway trip, you’re certainly in for a treat. From hip cultural spots to historic sights, there’s a lot to take in.

10 highlights of the Trans-Siberian Railway:

Vladivostok

Vladivostok serves as a strategic naval outpost and between World War II and the Cold War the outpost was closed to most of the world. Today, the city is thriving and if you get the chance to stop for a tour you will enjoy such sights as the vibrantly painted railway station as well as Our Lady Grieving Orthodox Church – the only church of its kind that was permitted to remain in the city when Stalin reigned. Other fascinating sighs include the Pacific Navy War Memorial as well as the Krasny Vympel steamboat. Eagle’s Nest is the perfect platform from which to observe the goings on in Vladivostok and a stroll through the historic naval cemetery is also a must-do.

Khabarovsk

The lively square in Khabarovsk is well worth a stroll as is a visit to the Natural History Museum next to the Amur River. You’ll get to look at numerous artefacts from the Gilyak and Goldi tribes too.

Siberia

Tran-Siberian rail tours typically take you through the rolling hills of the beautiful Siberian villages where you will see old-fashioned log houses and be able to take in the remote, wild countryside.

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Spend a morning in the Mongolian capital city of Ulaanbaatar and pay a visit to the National Museum where you can trace the history of none other than Genghis Khan. The Gorkhi-Terelj National Park isn’t too far from the museum and the park is great for taking in the stunning alpine scenery while visiting a felt tent and witnessing a Mongolian horseback riding demonstration.

Ulan Ude, Russia

Ulan Ude is the capital of the Buryat Republic which once served as a trading post between China and Irkutsk. The village of Old Believers is a must-visit. The Old Believers are a group that dates back to the 17th Century religious exiles and they offer a fascinating insight into their culture where very little has changed since the 17th century.

Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal is known as the sacred sea by locals and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The basin of the lake holds around 20 percent of the entire world’s unfrozen, fresh water. Typically a train ride will take you through 33 tunnels and past the rocky shores while you take in the incredible views. The village of Listvyanka is worth exploring and chances are a local family will invite you to their home for tea.

Irkutsk

This important Siberian outpost was originally established by the Cossacks way back in 1652. During the early 19th century, numerous Russian officers, nobles and artists were exiled to the outpost due to their involvement in the Decembrist revolt. There are a number of historic sites to visit in the city as well as delightful Siberian and Russian cottages to wonder through when you visit the Museum of Wooden Architecture.

Yekaterinburg

This is where Russia’s last tsar, Nicholas II, along with his family, was executed in 1918 by the Bolsheviks. You can visit the Romanov execution site which is now a church that has been dedicated to their memory.

Kazan

It’s worth spending a day wandering around Kazan which is the capital of Tatarstan. You’ll find it perched on the banks of the Volga River. In the city you can tour the Kremlin which is a Qol Sharif Mosque. The Peter and Paul Cathedral is also a notable visit. Do take a trip to the Kazan Conservatory and if time permits hop aboard a private cruise around the walls of the Kremlin.

Moscow

A city tour of Moscow is not to be missed. You can take a guided stroll through the Red Square, have a meal in a local restaurant and explore Moscow’s legendary Kremlin. St Basil’s Cathedral is a fascinating visit and be sure to go and see the court regalia dating back to the Romanov dynasty in the Armoury Museum. Also take in the Conquerors of Space monument that stretches an amazing 360 feet up into the sky and visit the Memorial Museum of Astronautics to learn more about the history of space.

Quick points: Save on fuel surcharges by booking awards through partners

HOSTED BY: 1 AIR TRAVEL

Beginners in the points and miles space might assume that they should always transfer credit card points to the program of the airline they’re flying on. However, thanks to airline alliances and partnerships, there are plenty of times when you’d be better off transferring credit card points to a partner program and booking the flight you want there.

In this edition of Quick Points, we’re discussing how you can pay lower fuel surcharges by booking awards through partners. There are a number of programs like Air Canada Aeroplan, Avianca LifeMiles and United MileagePlus that don’t impose surcharges at all. But today we’ll focus specifically on long-haul British Airways awards and see how you might be better off transferring your points to and booking your flights through Cathay Pacific Asia Miles than British Airways Executive Club.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.

Background

In addition to already high U.K. Air Passenger Duty fees, British Airways tacks hefty fuel surcharges onto its transatlantic flights. These fees and surcharges are charged at a fixed rate based on the cabin in which you’re traveling. Business and first-class passengers pay higher fees than economy class passengers.

It’s not uncommon to see one-way premium cabin awards on flights originating from the U.K. with at least $700 in taxes, fees and surcharges. Of course, that’s in addition to all of the miles that you’re redeeming.

While there’s no way around the U.K. Air Passenger Duty fees, you can leverage the Asia Miles program to book premium British Airways awards and partially avoid British Airways’ fuel surcharges.

Let’s run through a round-trip example in each cabin and see whether you’re better off booking through Asia Miles or British Airways Avios.

Economy: O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Heathrow Airport (LHR)

British Airways Executive Club

Miles: 40,000 Avios. Taxes, fees and surcharges: $651.33.

Miles: 54,000 Asia Miles. Taxes, fees and surcharges: $626.

Verdict: Book with British Airways to save 14,000 points.

British Airways Executive Club

Miles: 80,000 Avios. Taxes, fees and surcharges: $984.57.

sia Miles

Miles: 86,000 Asia Miles. Taxes, fees and surcharges: $825.

Verdict: It depends. Book with Asia Miles to save $160, or book with British Airways to save 6,000 points.

Business class: San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to LHR

Miles: 150,000 Asia Miles. Taxes, fees and surcharges: $1,150.

Verdict: Definitely book with Asia Miles.

Verdict: Definitely book with Asia Miles.

Earning Asia Miles

You can transfer points to Asia Miles from American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One and Citi ThankYou Rewards. If you’re new to the points and miles world, you can quickly earn these types of rewards by picking up cards such as the following:

The Platinum Card® from American Express: Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 on purchases within the first six months of card membership. Earn 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly or on American Express Travel on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar; 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotel bookings with American Express Travel; 1 point per dollar on other eligible purchases. ($695 annual fee; see rates and fees.)American Express® Gold Card: Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards Points after you use your new card to make $4,000 in purchases in your first six months of card membership. Earn 4 points per dollar at restaurants, 4 points per dollar (on up to $25,000 per calendar year; then 1 per dollar) at U.S. supermarkets, 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with the airline or on American Express Travel and 1 point per dollar on other eligible purchases. ($250 annual fee; see rates and fees.)Citi Premier® Card: Earn 60,000 ThankYou bonus points after you spend $4,000 in purchases within the first three months of account opening. Earn 3 points per dollar on air travel, hotels and at restaurants, gas stations and supermarkets; and 1 point per dollar on other purchases. ($95 annual fee)Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. Earn 2 miles per dollar on all purchases. ($395 annual fee.)

Bottom line

While you might be better off booking British Airways economy flights with British Airways Avios, as we begin to move into more premium cabins, the Asia Miles program becomes a clear winner. Despite there being no way to fully avoid taxes and fees on British Airways-operated flights, Asia Miles can offer as much as $1,000 in savings on select flights.

Some of the Asia Miles bookings will require slightly more miles, but if your goal is to spend as little possible out of pocket, Asia Miles is your go-to for long-haul premium British Airways award flights.
